Suzi,

Well that was indeed a light way to start the day. Now I will have all day to figure out how to warp time and mess what's left of this world.

It's no wonder most PHD's suffer from bouts of depression.

Leah, Since your new "contest" is a bit vague, I would have to say WJC will make his next gaffe the next time he opens his mouth, but I'll go with the same day as the official announcement from the Obama transition team that Hillary is or isn't selected as SoS.

Leah,

I can't give a date, but he'll make a statement at the Senate confirmation hearings which will cause at least some head scratching. The confirmation hearings will most likely be held sometime between January 22 and January 30 (I don't see them extending into February).

After seeing this video (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2008/11/20/nr.sanchez.preacher.sign.cnn), I left a comment at the church's site, stating that the pastor is a sinner because he is bearing false witness.

The attitude of the 'minister' makes all Christians look bad, IMO.

Looks like congrats are in order, Clinton accepting the offer.

I feel we really need a change in our foriegn policy. I think the rest of the world will be receptive to this change. I hope HRC is up to the task, I feel she is.

As for all the Rebublicans who say that Obama change was a just a campaign slogan. I feel all the Obama's people will learn they have to follow his lead, not be on their own. Change will be felt like a chill down their spine. They will then use there experience but implimentation will be under Obama's Way.

I loved David Lettermans line last night:

Thanks, I'm working on the first paper, it's going slowly but it is coming along.

As far as the "gaffe" contest, I'm out.

Remember what Obama has ALWAYS said, he also wants people around him who are not always going to agree with him. Hillary is obviously, as we all know, not a "yes" person. Of course she will carry out his agenda, but that doesn't mean she isn't going to question and challenge him when she feels he is going off track. This is one reason I'm in favor of her in the SoS position.

---------

On a different subject, have I told you guys/gals lately how tired I am of all the damn drama queens in the LGBT community? They are raising a stink over Obama's pushing the repeal of DADT back a year.......wow a whole flippin' year.

He wants to make sure it is done CORRECTLY! He wants to meet with his Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Pentagon as well as members of Congress to draw up the best and most effective plan on not only the repeal but to end the discriminatory practices within the military. These damn drama queens expect everything to be done over night. UGH!!!!!!! I swear, it's so frickin' ridiculous, you would think he drafted the DADT legislation to begin with. They aren't even giving him a chance and he hasn't taken office yet. I'm to the point that I just want nothing to do with them right now, but I'm not going to discard them because I think it would be much easier to repeal DOMA than it will be DADT. Civil marriage (in my opinion) will be easier to deal with than military policy. What do you guys think?

I had all four wisdom teeth pulled at one sitting when I was 22.

The first three took 15 minutes each, total of 45 minutes. The fourth tooth took 45 minutes by itself! The roots on the fourth tooth were slightly hooked, and almost looked like a cork screw, that's why it took so long to get that tooth out.

I was given an IV through a vein in my arm, and was 'aware' throughout the entire operation, but didn't feel a thing. Only after the drugs wore off did I feel any pain (mild), but I was EXTREMELY tired for the next 3-4 days.

How many people donated.

Average amount per donation.

How many email addresses in the Obama campaign 'virtual rolodex'.

Number of people who signed up for text-messaging.

Discussion of the socnets involved in one way or another in the campaign.

And a long discussion of the technology team that was instrumental in allowing all the above to happen.

When you(Clinton, etc.) run for public office, you become everyone's employee. You also bear much criticism because of this. Kudos in the form of words are also given, but less frequently. Kudos in the form of remuneration are great. Public servants know this and accept this. Even Palin understands that. You need to give Clinton more credit than that.

I understand where you are coming from and I agree with you. Go back and look at everyone of the post on here. You will see no one saying really anything neg. about anyone else except the Clintons. This doesn't include the republicans that doesn't count because most of them are dipshits. Plus the dip that calls himself a demo but sided with McCain [ I don't consider him to be a demo].

Go back you might and that is a BIG word just maybe find some little bit of something about someone else. Now how many times has the BS been slung about the Clintons... Everybody on here thinks so much of Obama and how smart he is but when it comes to the Clintons they must think he's a dumbass. Why because if they didn't they would leave them alone.

BOTH Clinton's are smarter than anyone on here. If they were smarter they wouldn't be where they are today they would be where the Clinton's are. Please don't try and tell me that BS I wouldn't want to be where they are because I would have to say you are a liar!!!!!!!!!

You tell me to Chill out well when the people on here QUIT being so bias and RUDE against the Clinton's I WILL!!!AJ

Emit R Detsaw said...

A.J.

Please take your own advise. You get all upset when anyone says what you perceive as "rude" towards the Clintons, but then you constantly say rude things about Richardson and even people on this Forum.

As an American retired serviceman, that served while Bill Clinton was President, I feel I have the right to say anything I want to about him that is not a violation of the law. He was a good President on many fronts, but he was no saint.

And as far as folks saying negatives about others, there have been plenty of instances. I had one this week against Bush. Everyone is always hitting Palin. People gave it to Edwards when that story broke. You, for some reason, are just way too sensitive about it when someone says anything bad about the Clintons. Wish we could help you get over that, but having known you now for several months, you will never change.

So the best thing for you to do, is to realize, not everyone is typing to you when they type on this board. My comment about Clinton's next gaffe was to Leah, not you.

If you want me to say something negative about Bill Richardson, I could. But it would include Bill Clinton, so I haven't.

So say what you want, I will say what I want. That's why this is an Open forum. We are not attacking you when we make comments about the Clintons, we are stating our opinions about them. That is our right. You can not take that right away. Period.

Aunt Jean said...

Emit

I guess you didn't read all of my post. [that's obvious] But to inform you I said the republicans didn't count. As far as Edwards there was for a very short period of time there was some neg.things said about him.

Now for the Clintons if I feel that people are attacking them I will defend them if I want to I have that right and YOU OR NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO TAKE THAT RIGHT AWAY FROM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So tell me where people have said something [besides a little notation] neg. about someone else?

Some people on here kill me they think that they can say what they want to about the Clintons but when I say something neg. about someone I need to chill out.

Talk about 2 faced that is being 2 faced.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean about me being rude to other people on here but I got big news for you I'm only rude when they are rude to me. I suppose you are talking about what I said to Mike IN Maryland well let me tell you something and hear me well no SOB is going to correct me on my spelling like I'm a child I'm NOT a child I THINK that was very very very RUDE OF HIM.

I don't have any idea what the heck is wrong with some people on here that they think they can criticize me and expect me to sit here like a little meek mouse and take it well it's not going to happen.

I have never said that Bill was a saint! He did several thing wrong.

I realize that when people type they are not always talking to me well I'm not always talking to the person when I talk that makes a comment about what I'm saying.

Get off your high horse!!! AJ

You mention any name and there is someone who has something neg. to say about them with a few exceptions.

Just a funny coincidence. My word verification is unmett one let away from unmelt or chillout. LOL

It looks like Hillary will get SOS. Obama seems to be drawing a line in sand and saying not from this day forward will you or Bill benefit from money raised from foreign entities. So they are pardoned from past indiscretions.

Karen Anne said...

AJ,

People spent a lot of time in here being considerate of your request that they not say anything bad about the Clintons.

Meanwhile you were going on and on and on about Richardson, who as far as I am concerned is a decent guy who backed the candidate he thought was best. That gets very tiring.

You are entitled to your opposite opinion about Richardson, and can say what you want, but then you can hardly expect people to not do the same about the Clintons.

And I think possibly any number of people in here are smarter than either Clinton. As to where the Clintons are today, how many of us want to be politicians? Darn few, I expect.

As to Hillary being SoS, I am aware she worked hard for Obama and normally would have earned this. My concerns are her hard right views about Israel might cause the Palestinians to continue to suffer, and Bill's history of taking money from dubious sources seems to contaminate her objectivity. Plus he has had, at least during the campaign, a tendency to not be rational. That's a real potential source of embarrassment to the Obama administration.

I think I'm as smart as Hillary, maybe more so. I sure am smarter than Bill.

I don't want to be in the position either of them is in. I like my own life, and I have different values.

Bill: chasing a 21 year old when he was in his 50s and her parents had entrusted her well-being to the White House. Losing the last couple of years of his Presidency, when he could have been doing good things, because he was mired in scandal. Serial adulterer over decades. Taking millions from dubious entities. Living a wasteful, environmentally unsound life style. Losing control emotionally bigtime during the campaign. I am smarter than that.

Hillary; staying married to a serial adulterer. Lying multiple times when she got into trouble in her campaign. Taking credit for things she didn't do. Trashing the apparent Democratic nominee out of a lust for power, even though it endangered the party's chances at a critical time. Having friends with such dubious values, I wouldn't let them in my house - Lynn whatsis, Ferraro, etc. Playing the class and gender card. Whining. I'm smarter than that too.

AJ - I guess no matter what those of us who like you say - you are bound and determined to argue and cause hard feelings. I sincerely tried to politely tell you the other night that your continued attitude was turning people off and causing them to get irritated with you. You now have managed to have almost all of the people who were friends with you online apparently tell you the same thing. Karen Anne, vwis, Emit, Jean, Dave and ME are all saying the same thing. Can we all be wrong? It is time my friend that you look in the mirror and come to the realization that it is you that has caused all this frustration. No matter how considerate and polite we try to be toward your feelings - you remain hard-headed and irrational. I guess I will stop trying to be considerate of your feelings and just say it like it is when I want to discuss differing views for the potential Obama Team. My mind had become a little more tolerant of the Clintons because of the superb support they showed for President-Elect Obama - but the last week and a half have made me more hard against them again because it is always about the Clintons. I think Hillary enjoys the "drama queen" role. What type of a team player exhibits the behavior she has since it became apparent that President-Elect Obama wanted her to serve in his cabinet in the premier position of SOS. She is handling this decision like she did her campaign - very poorly. So for what it is worth, in my opinion, Bill Richardson would be a much better choice for SOS because he has the credentials and the temperment to do a better job. Finally, if you can not discuss pros and cons in a dignified way - then you will continue to make your friends uncomfortable and more of them will speak up against your devisive and beligerent attitude. Sorry it came to me having to say this to you - but I believe you are a "walking time bomb" when it comes to discussions about the Clintons and I just don't enjoy chatting with you when you persist in being this way. Hope you see the light - but I am afraid you are too damn stuborn to listen to people who sincerely care about your feelings. Mike

In respect to what he is going through with his health, we've all decided it would be inappropriate. Actually, I would extend that to all the Kennedys. Caroline I would never bash because she gave up her father to this country. A child should have a father. I may say that I don't agree on one issue, but that would be it. However, I can't think of one instance, she has steered clear of politics in the past.

On to a lighter subject, the current status of the race for Ohio 15. We have both good news and bad news to report from Thursday.

Good News -- The judge hearing the dispute about provisional ballots in Franklin County held that it was the duty of poll workers to have the forms properly completed not the duty of the voter which means more provisionals from Franklin will be counted.

Bad News -- Since counting of provisional ballots can't begin until all disputes about their validity are resolved, it may be several more days before counting starts in Franklin Couty while appeals are considered.

Good News -- We have final numbers from Union County.

Bad News -- Union County was the Republican's strongest County.

Good News -- Based on the numbers listed on the SoS web page, they counted approximately 88% of the provisional ballots and the Democrat did slightly better on the provisional ballots than on the previous ballots.

Bad News -- Slightly better is still being beat by slightly more than 2 to 1 (644 more votes for the Republican to 314 for the Democrat raising the margin in the district to 479).

Besides Franklin County (with 10-20,000 ballots in the 15th) which should favor the Democrat by 6-8%, we are waiting on 900 ballots in Madison County which should favor the Republican by slightly less than 2-1. (In other words, guestimating the results from Madison, we should need to win the outstanding ballots in Franklin by 750 to take the seat.)

I have to pick her up around 5 p.m. Those parents are going to wore out. I probably would have to throw out a few of the 10 or 11 yrs. old girls on the drive there. My son's playing at a neighbors house, a next-door neighbor that moved away is visiting with the other neighbor. I am sure I will have an easy evening.

vwis said...

Aunt J,

I'm sorry to disppoint you. I did participate, but tried to keep it respectful towards the Clintons. I felt I needed to point that out before someone else does, just to prove you wrong.

The difference between me and some of the others is that I tend to lift you up and others put you down. We can disagree to gain a different point of view, but still respect each others reason for their rational. Much of your view towards the Clintons is based on feelings. It's not based on today headlines. I wish I felt that strongly toward any politician. I like Obama he still will have to prove he is worth my respect. So far I'm impressed by him, I hope it will continue.

Emit R Detsaw said...

Well, A.J. mentioned the Clintons were smarter than the people that posted here, so my initial thought was wondering how smart the people on here really are. It's kind of humorous trying to picture the education level of some of the people based on their posts. ;o)

Anyway, since A.J. mentioned Smart, and not intelligence level, we really can't gauge the folks here or the Clintons on education honors. But makes one wonder. Other than Bill being presented a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford, I can't seem to find anything that states where they finished in their class. Whether they graduated with any kinds of Honors or GPA. I did see some articles that mentioned the Clintons have gone to great lengths to not disclose their GPAs. I know both Biden and Obama graduated with Honors so they were in the tops of their classes.

FYI.... mine was a 3.94 - graduated from college with Honors. But I would never want to subject my family to the media scrutiny of Public Office. Nothing to hide, but smart enough to know my wife wouldn't want that - and what she wants is important to me.

Doesn't make me smarter or dumber than the Clintons. Anyone can get an education, it's what you do with it. ;o)

vwis said...

Emit,

It has often been said that the scrutiny of the media has caused the best candidates not to enter office. I watch what the Obamas are going through since the election, living their lives through the lens of a fishbowl. I mostly think it is sad for the children. I'm sure they are going to be fine, but it's not an ordinary life. I hope the girls will grow-up to be the fine young women they are headed to be. They will definitely make the same mistakes other children make it part of growing up. I wish that people are willing to give them enough space to do so. An example of this was Halloween, just stand on one street and then get out of there and let Daddy and daughter have their moment. That's my perspective.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

It is amazing that a tiny comment by Karen Anne suggesting a gaffe pool started all of this childish behavior on this thread especially since I responded to Karen's original comment saying to AJ that we could start an Obama gaffe contest too. So my inclusion of Obama showed that we were not singling out Bill Clinton.

It has really gotten ridiculous here that anyone making a comment about the Clintons gets jumped on.

Everyone that is in the news makes gaffes. Biden will probably end up making more than anyone in the upcoming months.

I have held my tongue on this thread more than once when Richardson has been bashed. And I have many times not said something about Hillary or Bill when I wanted to because I knew it would upset AJ.

From now on I will say what I want to say and if someone doesn't like it then they are free to skip over my comments.

I don't want to "unsubscribe" from their sites and go back to "Unaffiliated" registration but I wish I could control the types of communication coming from the Dems. The begging for money and requests for help are counterproductive. All they need to do is post information on their websites and I'll seek them out when I want help them.

OK, that is my whining for the day. (I should probably send as an email to the Dems, Obama, and Clinton instead.)

Obama trivial gossip...

1) The Obamas will be sending the girls to Sidwell Friends school.

2) The D.C. churches are all furiously working hard to be the one that the Obama's will join.

3) The Obamas will not get the new puppy until a month or two AFTER they move into the White House.

4) The Obamas are NOT going to sell their Chicago home. Obama said that now is not the time to sell.

5) Obama got a corned beef sandwich and pie at Manny's in Chicago for lunch yesterday.

Seems like there isn't much that we don't hear about the Obamas lately ;)

I havn't done anything to you or Karen Anne I don't understand why you two are acting the way you are.

You didn't start the contest that's true Karen Anne did or at least suggested it. Instead of saying lets bet on who says the first Gaffe, it was when Bill Clinton made his first. If that isn't singling him out I don't know what is. I do know that you said that we could make one on Obama and that you personally wasn't singling out the Clintons but the others were.
All I've said today is one small thing about Richardson except there at the last because of what mike in ga said.

So if you want to start more trouble go ahead if that make you happy. I thought we had made peace but you people sure do turn tail coat real easy don't you. If things don't go your way OH my GOD there is some that will turn on you in a minute.

Oh yea Mike in Ga this is what you said:

:You now have managed to have almost all of the people who were friends with you online apparently tell you the same thing. Karen Anne, vwis, Emit, Jean, Dave and ME are all saying the same thing.

Jean, Dave,Suzi, and Vwis don't treat me like some people on here they have to much class to treat people like yesterdays garbage.I'm not saying that we always agree but they sure in the heck don't treat me like trash because I don't think like them. So speak for yourself only and the ones that will let you speak for them but I don't think the ones I mentioned would want you talking for them.

One more thing:

What Karen Anne

said about the Clintons she should be ashamed of herself. So Obama must be pretty stupid in her eyes if he wants someone like that even close to the white house.AJ

Leah Texas4Obama said...

I do not want Hillary Clinton to be the SoS. And I don't want Bill Clinton any where near the White House. If Obama nominates her then I will respect his decision. Leah Texas4Obama said...

AJ-

I do appreciate some of the things that the Clintons have done in the past and the good works that the Clinton foundation does currently.

But there are things that Hillary did during the primaries that were just plain wrong and reflected upon her badly here at home and abroad. Such as her 'Shame on you' comment to Obama. And her comment about getting shot at - which caused a stir overseas with that government. Things like that and others are things that statesmen should not do. The whole world was watching and it was an embarrassment.

I believe Hillary should stay in the senate were she can do good works, but be out of the eye of the world media.

Emit R Detsaw said...

Ok, AJ, you of all people know the rules here about personal attacks. You do not know if I have a lick of common sense or not. But good sense is far better.

Now, I feel the need to respond to your comment:

"you and a few others on here are the most unappreciated people I've ever had the misfortune to post with. It's such a shame that there is people in this world that just doesn't appreciate anything that any one does. AJ"

Under those guidelines, you of all should appreciate Bill Richardson for what he tried to do for Bill Clinton. It's one of the things I actually hold against Richardson. When Richardson was Clinton's UN Ambassador he tried to hire Monica so they could get her out of the White House and away from Bill. Unfortunately Monica turned the job down, and the rest is history.

Mike-in-GA said...

AJ - Just to clear the air! I don't think you are ignorant or yesterdays trash! My comment about "ignorant stubborn pride" was probably too strong - I probably should have stopped at "stubborn pride". I also don't want to imply that I am speaking for others on the site. They are well capable of speaking for themselves. Unfortunately many of them have spoken and my point was to try and get you to see what they were saying. Finally, I accept your apology in the first post but don't know what to think about the later post. For more than two days this site has been consumed by this discussion. I'm too damned old to bite my tongue - I've tried to be conistent with my comments regardless of who was going overboard in my opinion. With the exception of "S.O.N." and maybe "AF&O' the others seem to understand what I was saying. It is not the person I chose to attack but the behavior on the site. I still feel you have a soft heart somewhere inside you and are not a bad person - but call it what you may - passion or stubborn pride or whatever - you just don't know how to stop once you get started. Some people like to get you upset, I am not one of those people! I don't know about you - but I personally do not like to waste so much time with this "tit-for-tat" that has happened for the past 2-3 days. I just wish you could learn to pull back a little and see that the majority of people on DCW do not want to attack you personally. They just want to enjoy a civil discussion with varying points of view that do not always agree with each other. Nothing wrong with disagreements, if, as others on here have said, they agree to disagree. I've learned alot by listening to other points of view rather than my own. For what it's worth to you again - I accept your apology - and offer you mine if I have offended you by being straight forward in my criticism of you. I am an equal opportunity critic if people are destroying the enjoyment I have had from this site and I will continue to be critical of ANYONE who goes overboard and to extremes! We went through this during the primaries and I'd really like it to end so we can talk about how we make things better in the future. I would have responded earlier but I took a 4 hour nap to get away from it for awhile. Like usual this is long winded but I don't know how else to say it.

CNN has a 'quick vote' it's home page:

What do you think Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin should do with her future?

The vote so far, from lowest to highest totals:

Write a book - 4% - 5020
Host a TV show - 10% - 12920
Run for president - 11% - 14561
Stick to Alaska - 76% - 100923

Looks to me that the people of the lower 48 don't want her down here any more.

Also, if she writes a book and I were by some miracle (or damnation) selected to be the editor, I would demand double or triple regular pay for that, since (based on the lack of ability to speak extemporaneously she exhibited during the campaign)
the rough draft she would provide would almost certainly be a REAL rough draft!

Hello There:

What's up?

I did not post here for a long time. Too much work, too little time!

I heard P-E Obama talking about 2 million jobs by Jan 2011! I was underwhelmed by his plan. Most people would know that about 2 million new entrants come into the labor pool per YEAR looking for job. By planning to create only 2 million in two years, the new Administration is aiming for only half-loaf. Too bad. They are not working hard enough!

WBush created about 10 million jobs in 8 years, which people thought was not enough.

It was the very poor economy that put Obama at the top - nothing else: not the big media push, not the 700 million dollar campaign, not the outpouring of young voters, nothing! It was the worst economic meltdown and poor job creation, and only jobs that punished the incumbent Party.
(Did you notice there were only about a million voters more in 2008 GE than 2004 GE, when the eligible voters increased by about 12 million in 4 years?)

I would expect Obama administration create at least 8 million jobs in 4 years (By comparison, Clinton created 22 million jobs in 8 years, the best record in recent memory).

If the economy is not turned around in 2 years, Democrats WILL lose the Mid Term Election in 2010, and possibly the White House in 4 years. That would be a shame.

Democrats will have a very short honeymoon period, I am afraid.

And, did you notice Obama is decidedly moving to the Center following mostly the foot prints of the Clintons? That's good for me - as I am a moderate, a centrist.

This will keep the HuffingtonPost Crowd very angry. Who cares, any way?

For Obama to be a successful two term President, he must be a pragmatist like the Clintons, and NOT a liberal ideologue of the FAR LEFT.

Cheers.

What????????????

The unemployed millions won't care whether jobs are created by the "New Industry" or the "Old Industry - retooling and rehiring".

They need jobs with decent salary and benefits, period.

2 million jobs per year is a bare minimum that the country needs.

Stop the liberal blather. Create jobs. That's the only solution that the country expects from the New Administration. Not Talks.
--------------------------
P-E Obama has a challenge short term: whether to bail out Detroit as is, or help them to become a VIABLE Industry. I say ASK them to go to bankruptcy, reorganize and come back as a mean and lean Industry to increase the market share world wide.

Don't throw good money after a bad bloated dying Industry in Detroit.

This will surely infuriate the labor unions. But, Who cares?

I don't think P-E Obama cares about Labor Unions any more! They can't go to the Right. They are stuck with the Left no matter what!

Obama is very smart and prudent. A pragmatist so far:

SoS to Hillary is a brilliant move for him. But, is it a good thing for Hillary? Maybe not! Oh, she is a true Public Servant - she will take the job to give credibility and visibility to the New Administration. A real personal sacrifice for the sake of the New Administration.

I wish Obama and Hillary well. Let their association prove to be really good for the country.

I hope Obama will protect her back from any backstabbers! Read Tom F's article in NYTimes a few days ago.

Cheers.

"And I don't want Bill Clinton any where near the White House. If Obama nominates her then I will respect his decision."

The key thing is What P-E Obama wants!

From Day One, after the Election, Obama has moved distinctly towards the Center - following the footprints of the Clintons!!

Now, it appears more than half of the new appointments are former Clinton loyalists.

Obama Administration NEEDs Hillary to gain credibility and visibility in the world.

If SoS is offered she WILL take up the job. And, most newspapers including NYTimes say the Job is Offered. Matter closed.

Obama knows who delivered the 42% of the White Votes to him!

Obama is a wise man. He has become a Centrist, leaving the FAR Left Liberal crowd behind several weeks ago.

Survival is very important in Washington Politics.

Even he chose Sidwell for his daughters' school following Chelsy Clinton! lol.

Still, I am waiting to see what he meant by "Bottom Up Change" during the campaign????

Cheers.

I'd like to help, but I've already chipped in for the campaign until I can see the bottom of my cupboard.

As to AJ, this is counterproductive. I value you, so I am just going to not read that stuff for awhile, any more than I read stop/yak's, but from now on I will say what I think about the Clintons or anyone else.

One thing that I find puzzling is why so many older feminists (Steinem, etc.) are so tied up in Hillary to the point of what seems to me to be unreasonableness. I have as much cred as anybody in this area, having been in engineering/science since the 60s.

Unfortunately, fairness doctrine does not apply to cable networks only broadcast networks. It also doesn't apply to individual shows, just stations as a whole.

Thus, for example, if a radio station wants to continue broadcasting Rush, they may have to go with Rachel Maddow as well to balance out their programming.

Can see my siblings now, five seconds after Rush ends, Rachel comes on and they get their daily exercise running to turn the radio off before they can be exposed to a different point of view.

Have lived in large cities such as Dallas and Houston. And have traveled Italy extensively in the past few years.

I've tried a couple of times to finish the 72 ounce steak at the Big Texan and the 48 ounce prime rib at Cattlemans but just wasn't man enough to complete the mission. That was when I was much younger and assigned Kingsville, TX in the early 70's. Some day I would like to at least try in one more time - but I doubt if my wife would let me because of my diabetes. All I can say is those are definitely two "huge dinners". I handled the meat but could not finish all the sides, salads, bread and beverages that went along with it as a mandatory part of the "eat it in one hour and get it free" contest. I think I read somewhere this year that a guy actually finished the meal in a record time of under 9 minutes. There was also an 11 year old boy and a 69 year old grandmother that accomplished the feat. I guess I'm just a wimp. Well off to bed - just thinking of it made me full so I should be able to sleep well now.

I knew that that I had heard that before it just slipped my mind.

This is what I think you might not feel the same way but that's ok. To begin with if there is cults like that I hope Obama abolishes them.

I wouldn't doubt that there is a club cult or whatever you want to call it that past presidents was asked to join.

Now where they got involved with it is story.

Can you really see Carter doing something like that? I can't. As far as the rest maybe to a certain degree. Do they carry it as far as they did many many moons ago I doubt it.

Now the one person that I think that would is Bush [yea the one in office] but I can't see his daddy doing it even though I disliked him also. I didn't like Reagan but I can't see him doing it either. Now for Bill I could see him checking it out to see what the hoop la was about but I can't see him either. Presidents are so busy I just don't see them getting to involved with it except Bush Jr.

Even though I think it's wrong It's hard for me to believe that the horrible things that used to go on still do.

I could be wrong and way off base. But I would rather not take any chances and have Obama get rid of both of them.

Obama promised a more open gov. I guess we'll have to wait and see. AJ

do you think that one day they will eliminate the Electoral College. I think it would best serve the people if they would just go by the popular vote. But you do have corrupt politicians out there so they would really have to keep a check on voting. AJ

Mike-in-GA said...

AJ - I hope that never happens. Popular vote sounds good, but there is a reason they elected to use the Electoral College. If you used only the popular vote - a small state would never be able to have much of a say in what happens. A handful of large states could band together and thier total vote count would dominate an election. At least the Electoral College gives every small state some say into what the outcome will be. These are my thoughts on the subject.

Aunt Jean said...

Mike In Ga

but couldn't they work it some way that big states can't do that. Aj

Emit R Detsaw said...

Morning Aunt Jean

I think the Electoral College needs to be changed a bit, but not done away with. Quick example is like how Nebraska does their Electorals. They have 3 distinct districts that give 1 Electoral vote to the big city voice, one to small town mid America, and one to the folks in the country area.

How the Electoral votes are broken out is left up to the States so they could figure out the best way for their state, but I would envision the best way, that would be somewhat aligned to the popular vote to a degree would look something like: (Numbers for Example only)

Say a State has 50 million voters and gets 5 Electoral votes. That State has 2 large population centers with 10 million voters each. They would each get 1 EV. The rest of the State would be divided into 3 each 10 million voter sections (geographically as best possible).

If the above example was Missouri, then Obama would receive 2 EVs (St. Louis and KC) and McCain would receive 3 EVs for the rest of the State, instead of McCain winning all 5 EVs.

It would be similar to how the Dems do the Primary selection.

I think that more fairly represents the voice of the people, yet still let's smaller states have a voice.

tmess2 said...

Putting aside the arguments pro and con for abolishing the electoral college, I just don't see any chance that it could happen.

We currently have 435 representatives in Congress. That means that the average state has 8.7 representatives. Because every state has two Senators, the electoral college (by adding two to each state's number of representatives to get the electoral vote) gives more weight to states below that average and less weight to states above that average.

How much additional weight depends on how many representatives you have. Those with one representative (many of whom have less population than the average representative in other states) get their weight tripled. Those with two representatives get their weight doubled. Those with three representatives increase their weight by 67%.

Because it takes 3/4 of the states to amend the Constitution, it only takes 13 states to block an amendment. Seven states have one representative -- Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, and Vermont. Five states have two representatives -- Hawaii, Idaho, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. Four states have three representatives -- Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Nebraska. While these numbers will change somewhat after the 2010 census (3 may move out of this group and one may join), to amend the Constitution, all of the states not in this group need to approve the amendment and you need at least three of these states to approve the amendment. Pragmatically, I don't see how you convince the peole of Alaska and Hawaii to eliminate the possibility that their votes could make the difference.

My opinion? They're all politicians. On top of that, a lot of people go into the voting booth with their emotions, not their minds. There were a few things I would've discussed during the campaign, but not on a public forum. Let's face it, there were a lot of eyes on this site. I was coming from the mindset that we didn't need to hand out any ammo. McCain's campaign tried to make anything stick and make up most of it. I DO like how my Ravens looked today after that ridiculous loss to the Giants last week.

Rookie coach
Rookie QB
Lots of rookies on the offensive line

Lots of people were saying the Ravens would be lucky to win six games this year. They've already won seven.

Rough stretch of games coming up, but the birds are only 1 game out of first, and leading the pack in the wild card race (actually tied for first playoff spot with New England, but ahead on tie-breaker).

Upcoming games:
at Bengals
Redskins at home
Steelers at home
at Cowboys
Jaguars at home

The Ravens should win at least three (@ Bengals, Redskins, Steelers), probably four (Jaguars), with only the Cowboys game I would consider a question mark - it's a Saturday night game, and at Dallas.

If the Ravens defense keeps playing like it is now, the other teams could be in for some long days in a losing effort!

Although I was very critical about BHO during the Primary, I became a Obama lover once I knew he would love Clontonites, and the Centrists and Moderates of the Party.

Indeed, from Day One President Elect (P-E) Obama has moved decisively to the Center as shown by the very first appointments he made: Emanuel and Podesta who cut their teeth under the tutelage of Bill Clinton.

So far P-E Obama has shown me and other moderates that Campaigning and Electioneering on one thing, and Governance is totally another matter. Good for him.

Today's introduction of Geithner, Summers (both Clinton loyalists) and others and the Q & E were very good. I liked it very much.

But, still the Market is down from the Nov 4th level: It has gone down from 1000 (SP500 Index) to about 850 today. This is a sign that the Main Street and Wall Street are under extreme pain and sorrow. Obama understands the pain, as he showed this morning.

As long as Obama governs from the Center he will have the help and prayers of most of the Americans.

Wait and See.

------------------
Our resident Gays are still wounded that Obama did not help them in CA to defeat the Yes vote for Prop 8. I believe the Yes vote was correct, as articulated by Obama. Job well done, BHO. I love it.

"He's already up there with the Clintons' when it comes to strategy."

True.

Bill and Hillary have worked tirelessly for Barack.

He would very much like to follow Bill Clinton's legacy as the President:

Clinton's policies created a vibrant economy which produced about 22 million jobs in 8 years. A record hard to beat.

Naturally, he wants to follow the footprints of the Clintons.

If Hillary accepts the offer of SoS, Obama Administration will get instant recognition and credibility in the world arena - a MUST for USA.

(Of course, the Clinton-haters in the Party will not like this at all!!)

Obama is an ambitious high octane workaholic who earnestly wants to beat Bill Clinton's record, although he narrowly missed the EV count in 2008 (365 Vs 370 that Clinton got in 1992).

Maybe, in 2012 he MAY beat him!

I wish him well and pray for his success.

Cheers.

Today's News Conference gave a good glimpse of what President O will do: he has already 'triangulated' - he wants a 'Smart Govt' and not the "Small Govt or Big Govt". Very good.

I am sure he will not raise tax for at least another 2 years, amidst a cruel recession. He will just allow W's tax rate just expire in 2010: this will reset the top marginal personal tax rate to 39.5%. A guess that's what a politically astute President will do. A classic Clintonomics.

One mistake from yesterday's News Conference: Summers was not the architect of Clintonomics - he joined Clinton only at the very end. The real architect was Robert Rubin and his immediate boss Lloyd Benson of TX. Just a clarification to the News writers like Gibbs and Axelrod!

More news out of Ohio of the good news-bad news sort concering Ohio 15.

Good news is that Madison County reported today. Out of 914 possible provisional and absentee votes, the Republican gained 373 and the Democrat 258 (approximately the same proportion as the previously counted ballots) leaving us down by only 594 votes with Franklin County still to be counted. If the results in Franklin County mirror previous results from that county (an 8% margin), we only need 8-9,000 votes to be counted. (It's good news because there are probably more than 15,000 ballots to be counted and I was expecting to be further down before these votes were counted.)

Bad news is that the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals overruled last week's decision on provisional ballots (holding that it should not be in federal court) and sent the matter to the Ohio Supreme Court (controlled by the Republicans) which may result in 1,000 provisional ballots not being counted. As the Ohio Supreme Court has given the parties until Monday to file their written arguments, we will not have any final numbers from Franklin County until probably the second week of December.

Karen Anne said...

What's with provisional ballots so often not being counted?

tmess2 said...

The deal with provisional ballots not being counted is that many states only allow provisional ballots to the extent that they are required to by federal law.

Before a provisional ballot even comes into play, something is grossly screwed up in the process. One of three things is true -- 1) the voter registerd late and doesn't realize they missed the deadline; 2) the voter is in the wrong-place and nobody can get through to the election authority to find the right place; or 3) while properly registerd, the election authority either improperly removed them from the rolls or failed to get them put on the rolls in time.

To the extent that provisional voters fall into category one, no state counts them. The real problem is when voters fall into a combination of category two (or a combination of two and three). Many states will not count a provisional ballot if the voter is at the wrong precinct. This problem is much bigger in cities than in rural counties (which only have a handful of precincts and tend to be more courteous about telling voters the right precinct thereby avoiding the need for a provisional ballot in the first place).

Karen Anne said...

I thought some provisional ballots were tossed for stuff like the voter using an initial instead of a first name or signing on the line for printing, etc.

Plus it can't be rocket science in this day and age for each precinct to have a way to map an address onto the correct precinct. One computer with Internet access and they're good to go. Or some big printout showing address ranges (not every address.)
bruc

Mike in Maryland said...

Another scenario for provisionals, especially in Indiana and Georgia, and also for first-time voters:

A. The person didn't bring 'proper' identification to the poll, or

B. The ID(s) they brought to the poll didn't 'meet the requirement' according to the election officials.

B is more likely in a Repug area with a voter registered as a Democrat.

I'm not sure what the ID requirements are in Ohio, but I don't think they are the most lenient.

Mike

tmess2 said...

It's not rocket science to have a pda or computer at each polling place with accurate correlation between address and precinct. (We do it in my county of 33,000 people.)

It's just that some jurisdictions opt to be less helpful or don't have the funding for it. (Can you say vote suppression.)

Likewise, some jurisdictions are ticky-tacky on whether or not the required affidavit was properly completed and will find any reason to reject a provisional ballot. Others take a "we want people to vote" approach and excuse technical flaws that do not prevent verification of the eligibility of the voter.

tmess2 said...

Sorry Mike, I forgot about the ID thing being in a state that has resisted them on state constitutional grounds.

Most of those states do allow the voter to bring proper ID to the election authority within a certain range of time after the election but again you get some states that will use minor flaws in the affidavit process to reject those who do validate ID later and others that just want the ID verified.

Hello There:

Another News Conference today by P-E Obama: a third one in just ONE week! Is it not a bit too much?

It appears now that he has created a Pool of Masters of Economic Ideas:

Volcker: As Chair of Special Economic Advisory Panel

Summers: As Director of National Economic Council

Romer: Head of Economic Advisers.

Perhaps, these Egomaniacs would help P-E O during this time of economic crisis and financial meltdown. On the other hand, they may confuse him all the more, because most economists have two faces: They will say "On the one hand...go this way, but one the other hand...go the opposite way". Really, P-E O will be a lonely man taking the hard final decision!

I am afraid Too Many Cooks will Spoil the Broth!!

The broad stock market - the SP500 Index - is still languishing around 850, nearly 15% down from Nov 4th 2008, the day of P-E O's Election to the Power.

People need Jobs... more Jobs.

Cheers.

Great blog post, Dave.

"Several U.S.-based Muslim organizations immediately held press conferences or issued statements to strongly criticize al-Zawahiri and his manipulation of the words of the late Malcolm X. Conversely, these conferences and statements of response have not gone over well within the jihadi community, with some Arabic-speaking commentators issuing angry rants about the apparent treachery of American Muslims, including specifically the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)."

Did they really think AA Muslims would abandon African-American heritage for their crap? Not happening. Most AAs regardless of their faiths have family members who have fought in American wars since the American Revolution. Obama's election has only strengthened their allegiance to the USA.

Pulease. Al-Zawahiri made a big mistake with those comments. You'll see a surge of AAs willing to join up and kick Al-Qaida butt.

Something I was thinking about earlier. Here is a list of Democratic Senators who are up for reelection in 2010......

Bayh, Evan- (D - IN)
Boxer, Barbara- (D- CA)
Dodd, Christopher J.- (D - CT)
Dorgan, Byron L.- (D - ND)
Feingold, Russell D.- (D - WI)
Inouye, Daniel K.- (D - HI)
Leahy, Patrick J.- (D - VT)
Lincoln, Blanche L.- (D - AR)
Mikulski, Barbara A.- (D - MD)
Murray, Patty- (D - WA)
(OPEN)- (D - IL)
Reid, Harry- (D - NV)
Salazar, Ken- (D - CO)
Schumer, Charles E.- (D - NY)
Wyden, Ron- (D - OR)

....I know I know, who cares at this point right? Well, I have the feeling that most of them will have an easy reelection bid (provided they don't get caught up in any type of corruption.) However there are about 5 that I think will have a harder time being reelected:

Dorgan, Byron L.- (D - ND)
Lincoln, Blanche L.- (D - AR)
Reid, Harry- (D - NV)
Bayh, Evan- (D - IN)
Salazar, Ken- (D - CO)

I think that Salazar is safer than Bayh. Bayh's difficulty will be the fact that IN barely went blue this year. But what I was thinking about is the National Review. They ALWAYS list their most "liberal" to most "conservative" senators every year. And they usually label the most "liberal" as someone who their either a)the seat could be taken or b)threatens the Republican Party (hence Obama being named 2007's most liberal senator). The reason I put Dorgan and Lincoln on the list of those who could be ousted is because they are in VERY red states. My guess is that they probably feel their best chance of picking up a seat in 2010 would be to label Blanche Lincoln as the most liberal Senator for either 2008 or 2009.

What do you think?

Karen Anne said...

I wouldn't mind seeing a Democrat win over Harry Reid in the primary. Time for some backbone.

Great slideshow, Leah, esp. those little kids in the school.

Mike in Maryland said...

Dave,

Re: Evan Bayh

I don't think he's in much, if any, trouble. He's very centrist, so the 'liberal' tag won't be easy to hang on him.

Add in he's a VERY known politician in Indiana.

He was elected as Indiana Secretary of State in 1986 with more than 53% of the vote. He then was elected as Governor in 1988, again with more than 53% of the vote. When he ran for reelection in 1992, he received almost 68% of the vote, one of the highest vote totals in modern Indiana state-wide election history.

In his 1998 run for the Senate, he won almost 64% of the vote against the very popular mayor of Fort Wayne, Paul Helmke (who was heavily backed by the national GOP). In his reelection bid in 2004, he won with almost 62% of the vote. In that same 2004 election, Shrub received 59.94% of the vote in Indiana.

All in all, Bayh should have one of the safer Democratic seats in the 2010 election cycle, barring some major faux pas on his part.

Barbara Walters' Special on P-E Obama and Michelle was good.

Obama looked relaxed and was smiling a lot!

He handled the "Change" vs "Experience" issue well.

Clearly, he has moved towards the Center from Day One of his Election, because he knows pretty well that Gravity of America runs through the Center: Most Americans are moderates and centrists (although Meachum of Newsweek contends that America is a Center Right Country) and the self-proclaimed Liberals are only 22% (there are about 33% of Conservatives and the rest 45% are either Independents or Centrists or moderates in America today).

I am quite happy with a Centrist at the White House from Jan 20, 2009.
