Green Sunday at Red Rocks

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Green Sunday at Red Rocks was an event held by the Host Committee to bring awareness to Global Warming.

I posted about the first half of the show last night here.

After Sheryl Crow finished Van Jones and Senator Salazar spoke. We were also treated to a great speech on the environment from George (Will Ferrell) Bush.

Sugarland played a great set... and I don't normally like country music.

Before Dave Matthews came out with Tim Reynolds, William McDonough, Governor Ritter, Robert Kennedy Jr, and Governor Kaine spoke.

Kaine introduced fellow Virginian Dave Matthews who was absolutely amazing.

I might get used to this press pass thing!

Delegate Kick Off Party Pictures

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

The delegate kick off party at the Colorado Convention Center honored those providing relief and help to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event was fun. Good food, music and beverages. Texas delegates had difficulty getting into the event... the DNCC had not delivered passes in time for many delegates. I have also posted some protester pictures on my blog at http://jstrater.blogspot.com/2008/08/protesters.html

League of Conservation Voters announces their "Concert for Clean Energy"

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

This is a show I'm looking forward to seeing on Tuesday night. You can sign up for free tickets here.

Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, announced it will be co-sponsoring the Concert for a Cooler Planet presented by Frontier Hosts. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26 in Denver, Colorado. Model and actress Amber Valletta will host the concert, a premier event during the Democratic National Convention, featuring a special acoustic performance by Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie and a performance by singer-songwriter Graham Colton. The concert will be held at the Sherman Center, 1770 Sherman St., at 9:30pm.

“This concert will be the second hottest ticket in Denver,” Navin Nayak, LCV Director of Global Warming said, making an allowance for Senator Obama’s acceptance speech. “Some of today’s best and most original musical performers have joined us to fight for a clean energy future that will create millions of jobs, protect our planet, and end our addiction to foreign oil.”

Death Cab for Cutie’s most recent album, Narrow Stairs, reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and they will be featured on the upcoming cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

“We knew we really wanted to be a part of this event,” Chris Walla said. “It’s going to great to not only be in Denver during such an historic week, but to also help focus the world’s attention on the promise of clean energy.”

Graham Colton is a singer-songwriter from Oklahoma City, OK most widely known for his hit song, "Best Days", featured on Fox's 'American Idol'. He has toured with John Mayer, Counting Crows, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews Band, and Kelly Clarkson, and appeared on NBC's 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno', CBS's 'Late Show with David Letterman', NBC's Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and ABC's Live with Regis and Kelly.

Amber Valletta is a model and actress known for appearing in magazine ads for Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, and Versace, as well as hosting MTV’s House of Style. She has appeared in several movies including What Lies Beneath, The Family Man, Raising Helen, and Premonition.
This and many other events have been added to the DemConWatch Convention Calendar. We're adding new events every day so check back often.

Rock the Vote among many to have mobile tour vehicle

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

If you'll be at the convention next week it may be difficult to be somewhere that doesn't have a mobile tour type vehicle. For starters, Howard Dean will be arriving in Denver at noon in the Register for Change bus. Lifetime will roll in with it's Every Woman Counts bus on August 25th. Project Vote Smart will have a bus as well as CSPAN, CNN and probably countless others.

The latest to announce is Rock the Vote.

The RtV Mobile Election Vehicle, launching in partnership with AT&T, will be stationed at Youth HQ right outside the convention center. Vehicle features include:

  • A PSA Recording Booth where visitors record their very own PSA/Rock the Vote message to share with friends online or via video text messaging (MMS)
  • Two Voter Registration Bays with computer stations where young people can register to vote
  • A Mobile Music Bay where concert-goers can download RTV-related content to their mobile device and sign up for an AT&T RTV text message short-code, RTVOTE (788683), to automatically receive voter registration and Election Day reminders, polls, political quizzes, celebrity messages, and mobilization alerts
  • A Framerz Bay where guests can use a tethered camera phone to take photos with an RTV celebrity, presidential candidate or political icon
  • A Convention Karaoke contest where political pundits and politicians are paired with Rock stars to sing (potentially bad) karaoke to urge young people to get out and vote.

Additionally, student journalists participating in RtV’s Rock the Trail program will also be on site at the conventions to discuss their reporting on youth vote and the RtV program in general.

This is the DemConWatch Convention Calendar. We will add times and events as we find out about them. If you know of an event that's not yet listed please add it as a comment and we'll post it to the calendar. This is the most comprehensive Democratic National Convention Events Calendar on the Internet.

You can switch from Agenda View to Month or Week but I find Agenda view is the best. Also note that you can click on Map within each event to see where it is taking place as well as adding comments about the event. And if you have a GMail account you can add the events to your personal calendar and setup reminder notifications.

Green Frontier Fest and New Energy Station

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

On August 24, the Sculpture Park at the Denver Performing Arts Complex will be transformed into Green Frontier Fest and New Energy Station, full of outdoor festivities. In addition to more than 100 green living exhibits, eco-carnival games and full-sized solar energy home, special guests will include Daryl Hannah, Governor Bill Ritter, Mayor John Hickenlooper and Van Jones. The special presentations, which will take place on a solar powered stage, are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. - cont'd

Daryl Hannah, an environmentalist and actress who has appeared in more than 60 films and television series, has received several awards recognizing her contributions to protecting the environment, including an Artivist Award for Environmental Preservation, a Water Quality Award for Environmental Activism and the Environmental Media's Ongoing Commitment Award, among others. A part-time Telluride, CO resident, Hannah also has a sustainability blog (www.dhlovelife.com), drives a biodiesel car and owns a solar-powered home built from green materials.

Also on hand at the event will be Van Jones, the founder and president of Green For All, whose mission is to build an inclusive, green economy strong enough to lift millions of people out of poverty. Jones is an advocate for "green-collar jobs and opportunities" for disadvantaged people and is committed to the fight against climate change. In 2007, Van Jones worked successfully with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as several others, to pass the Green Jobs Act of 2007. This legislation authorized funding to train 35,000 people a year in "green-collar jobs."

"This is a great opportunity for Denver and Colorado to showcase our green accomplishments and innovations, and we are delighted to add such dynamic speakers to the Green Frontier Fest lineup," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "An enduring legacy project for our community and visitors, this event will create public awareness that lasts well beyond the Convention week."

Booth spaces for exhibitors sold out in less than six weeks, reaffirming the excitement and spirit of moving towards a green and sustainable future. The fun, educational event will provide knowledge that will not only facilitate a cleaner environment, but also provide guests with tips to ultimately save money and resources. The full-sized solar energy home, which will be open for tours, will demonstrate how new energy-saving technology can be incorporated in everyday life.

The Green Frontier Fest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is free to the public, will also include a concert with U.S. Pipe and other live bands and musicians. Guests can also try delicious local and sustainable foods, wine and beer.

NEW ENERGY STATION
Taking place in tandem with the Green Frontier Fest on Sunday, then continuing throughout the Democratic National Convention, the New Energy Station will showcase Denver and Colorado's new energy innovations through a number of displays and applications in Sculpture Park that highlight environmentally-responsible energy technologies and practices. Also located at Sculpture Park with free admission, New Energy Station will be open to the public Aug. 24 - 28, 10a.m. to 6p.m. (Green Frontier Fest is a single day event on Aug. 24.)

Showcasing a wide array of clean energy solutions, the New Energy Station reaffirms Colorado's place as one of the leaders in the New Energy future for the nation and world.

"The New Energy Station and Green Frontier Fest are just two examples of our commitment to make this convention the greenest possible," Mayor Hickenlooper stated. "We're fortunate to have so many great new energy organizations willing to come together to enlighten the public about the technology, products, and services available for greener living. The technologies being displayed at New Energy Station are integral parts in the future economic development of Denver, Colorado and the nation."

Highlights of the New Energy Station include the Solar Decathlon House that demonstrates the latest in residential efficiency and solar technology, a 140-foot long wind turbine blade, a bike station that will be powered by a mobile solar unit and the new Xcel Smart Grid application display - an innovation found in Boulder, CO - the first city in the U.S. to deploy this Smart Grid system.

Denver is a serious place to hold a convention

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Now that we're done with the Libertarian Convention, Denver is ready to move back to some hard-hitting serious convention action.

Yes... it's the 66th Annual World Science Fiction Convention which will be held at Denver's Colorado Convention Center. If you haven't been to the Colorado Convention Center, the most interesting thing about it is the 3-story tall bear standing outside of the building.

No... I wasn't making it up! Back to the seriousness.

One of my favorite books ever is Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". If you haven't read it I highly suggest that you pick it up. This is where "Denvention" gets cool.

Ghost of Honor
Robert A. Heinlein
Robert A. Heinlein

I told you this was serious... they managed to get Heinlein (who died in 1988) to come and speak at the convention as a ghostly apparition.

OK... so I kid with the Sci-Fi fans but only because I'm one of them (even though I've never heard of any of their convention's guest speakers). If I haven't sold you on paying the $225 to attend this extravaganza... maybe this man can:

Convention party planner very busy

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

The important stuff, you know, the party planning, is full-speed ahead:

Jenny Anderson may be the biggest party girl in Denver.

As event director for the Denver Convention Host Committee, Anderson is charged with making arrangements for the 10,000-guest media mob party at Elitch Gardens on Aug. 23, as well as coordinating 24 party places for 8,000 members of state delegations on Aug. 24 during the Democratic National Convention.

All welcome receptions for the delegations will happen the same night in 24 different places."We're spreading them out throughout the Denver metro area," Anderson said. "Wings Over the Rockies, Belmar Center, Wildlife Experience and some in downtown locations. They're all venues, not restaurants or hotels." - RMN.

College Democrats also coming to Denver

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

The College Democrats of America have their convention every 4 years in the DNCC host city just before the big show, and this time is no exception:

With the youth vote surging this year, we are expecting a very large attendance at the annual College Democrats of America Convention. So if you want to go to Denver, start planning now! Here are the details: The CDA Convention begins Friday, August 22nd. Most of the CDA portion of the programming will be over by Sunday, August 24th but lots of events will continue through the Democratic National Convention. Both events will officially end on Thursday, August 28th.

Everyone is encouraged to stay for the College Democrats of America Convention (which will have most of its events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and for the Democratic National Convention (which begins Monday and ends on Thursday). For those who were at our 2004 CDA Convention which overlapped the Democratic Convention in Boston, this year will be exactly the same. During the Democratic National Convention we will host all sorts of panels, parties, and events.

Registration is limited and housing is even more limited. If you have housing options available to you in Denver, secure them now. Know a friends couch you can stay on? Great. Otherwise CDA has dorms that will be available for students from Friday, August 22 to Thursday, August 28th. Prices and registration will be up on on www.collegedems.com shortly.
And an invitation from CDA President and Superdelegate Lauren Wolfe:
