$110k for Palin's Stylists

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Move over wardrobe! In a move to add a little economic stimulus to the styling and cosmetics industry, the McCain campaign also spent more than six figures on Sarah Palin's makeup during the final months of the election cycle. That's about 10 grand a week.

Amy Strozzi (pictured at left), the McCain campaign's Czar for Style and Fashion, also serves as the make-up artist for the TV show "Dancing with the Stars." Which means she works in Hollywood. Which means she's from California.

Hmm...how do you think she voted on Prop. 8?

Monday, 1 December 2008: Part 1

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Today we will all spend some time today trying to sort out in our minds what happened in Mumbai (Bombay) last week, who did what, and what happens next?

But a few other things will be going on today also:

Last spring, Edward "Uncle Teddy" Kennedy was supposed to receive a honourary degree at Harvard last spring, and deliver the commencement address. Illness prevented that, but today, he will receive the award.

The honor is in recognition of Kennedy’s lifelong commitment to public service and his tireless efforts as a champion for a range of social issues including health care, civil rights, labor, employment, the environment, and education.
Vice President-elect Joe Biden will attend.

Spunky is in Georgia today, stumping for Saxby Chambliss. Even her home town newspaper is not impressed.

The Big Three return to DC today. Of course, the question will be they're supposed to be bringing a plan to save them: will they bring something worthwhile? The fun question is: how will they get there?

Seriously, the Big Three will have divergent paths today. If you read that NY Times link, it mentions that Chrysler may need a new partner. What the Times doesn't mention is that Cerberus, which bought a controlling interest (80%) in Chrysler in 2007, wants its money back. Cerberus claims that it was misled by Daimler-Chrysler. Let me repeat: Cerberus wants ALL its money back: that's over $7.2 billion. (USA Today, 28 November 2008, page 4B.)

Over in Illinois, Governor Rod Blagojevich is still looking for someone to replace President-elect Obama in the Senate. He spoke with Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who turned him down. According to Gutierrez: Governor Blagojevich shared with me today that he was very interested in me as a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat, but that his preference is to appoint someone who will run for a full term in 2010.

But there's more. Richard M. Daley is up for re-election as Chicago's mayor in 2011. Gutierrez may be looking to run against him. To do so, he needs to solidify support amoungst the city aldermen sooner rather than later, and staying in the House would provide a better opportunity to do so.

Thank You Sarah Palin!

No... seriously. Thank you!

Should we give money to Republicans like this that want to keep The Turkey Pardoner Sarah Palin in the spotlight more than most Democrats do?

Palin's crazy press conference from today's Republican Governor Association meeting

By golly you betcha!

And don't complain that I'm Republican bashing:
The GOP governors spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity.

One called it awkward: “I’m sure you could see it on some of our faces.”

Another Republican governor eyeing a presidential run in 2012 told CNN the event was “odd” and “weird,” and said it “unfortunately sent a message that she was the de facto leader of the party."
$100 that it was Pawlenty that said it was odd and weird.

Geography and Sarah Palin: The Leak Speaks

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Martin Eisenstadt has identified himself as the source of the leak relating to Spunky's lack of knowledge about the continent of Africa. Here's his information.

And before you read it, all things considered, I don't think NOT knowing the difference between the Sunnis and the Shia kept ANYONE off the GOP ticket. Thanks, I feel better now.

By now you’ve all heard the Fox News report last week that “unnamed” former McCain advisers leaked that Sarah Palin was confused about whether Africa was a continent, and which countries were in NAFTA. I was perfectly happy staying under the radar as an anonymous source for Fox News‘ Carl Cameron, but now that Palin has accused her accusers of being “unprofessional…jerks…cowards… taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news” and begun to cast doubt on the Fox News report, maybe she’s right to a certain extent. For those of us on the McCain campaign who thought that she acted like a rogue diva and lost John the election, maybe we DO have a responsibility to come out in public. But Sarah… careful what you ask for: some of us may have more to reveal.

So yes, to be clear, last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources (and going through the wringer ala Judith Miller or Matt Cooper) on something like this.

As you know, I was one of the foreign policy advisers on the McCain campaign who worked with Randy Scheunemann to help prep Sarah on her debate with Joe Biden. Did we outright give her a geography quiz when we started the prep? No, of course not. But yes, in the context of the prep, it slowly became apparent that her grasp of basic geo-political knowledge had major gaps. Could she have passed a multiple choice test about South Africa or NAFTA. Probably. But it was clear that she simply didn’t have the ease of knowledge that we come to expect from a major party political candidate. Other slights came up, too: Not knowing the difference between Hezbollah and Hamas. Or the difference between the Shiites and Suni. Or when it came to international terrorist organizations, knowing that the IRA was in Northern Ireland, and ETA in Spain.

The real thing we had to constantly remind her was to never, ever compare herself in any way to Hillary Clinton, as she had at her announcement speech. We had it on good authority that Biden was prepping to unleash the inevitable line, “I know Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is a friend of mine. And Sarah, you’re no Hillary Clinton.” Alas, Biden would have been right.

UPDATE: HuffPost is reporting that Eisenstadt is a fake. Apologies, I was taken in.

Just When You Thought There Was Downtime...

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

While the GOP is fighting for its own soul in terms of which direction the party should go, center or right, certain individual Republicans are already headed to Iowa to start stumping for the 2012 GOP primary season. (Yes, I know that Iowa is a caucus state.)

Mike Huckabee will make two sites in Iowa later this month to hawk his new book, and then on to multiple stops in South Carolina.

Bobby Jindal will be headlining a statewide dinner for Iowa evangelicals.

In addition, the Republican Governor's Meeting starts this Wednesday, in Miami.

People to watch: Charlie Crist, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, John Thune, and of course, Spunky.

I have my eye on these folks, and will keep you updated. And yes, I have files on these folks, and will be sharing them as time goes on. If you have anything you'd like me to add to my files, just drop a note.

And for those of you who question why we start this now:

Knowledge is power.
Facts beat innuendo.
Pro-action beats re-action.

Better safe than sorry.

The Future of Sarah Palin

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

I originally drafted this post earlier in the week to address the five reasons why Sarah Palin is not the future of the GOP. I then held off because of the onslaught of attacks she has since received from within her own Party.

Granted, Palin didn't belong on a national ticket - but she didn't put herself there. T'was the Powers That Be who did that. Ultimately, the blame for her position and actions on the ticket falls squarely at the feet of those who put her there. As I mentioned earlier this week in this post, I do think that Palin was part of the reason that the ticket lost - but she was not the sole reason for the loss.

Since then, there have been numerous reports of GOP insiders pinning the loss on her, "throwing her under the bus" as the phrase goes. Even Fox News got in on the action. A recent post on ABC News goes into detail about the problems with Palin and the McCain campaign. Remember the cries of sexism the Republicans said about Democrats and the treatment of Hillary Clinton during the nomination period? All of that pales in comparison to what's going on now.

This onslaught is bass ackwards (as the phrase goes). Ultimately it was the Party that failed - not the runningmate.

Because the surest way to keep a runningmate from "going rogue" or going on shopping sprees is to put staff around the people who will manage them appropriately. Even if the candidate has a tendency to deviate from the message or the objectives, a strong managerial staff can bring that person back. Presidential campaigns are not about the running mates - they are about the nominee. This was a failure on the part of McCain's leadership team. Scapegoating Palin only makes the advisors look even worse.

As for Palin's future...

The slow death of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens' career could also be the slow revival of Sarah Palin's. Because though he may pull out a win in the still-to-be-determined US Senate race there, his recent felony convictions could cause Stevens to get booted from the chamber much in the same way Bob Packwood was forced to resign in 1995. This would create a vacancy in the Senate in which Palin could run and likely win.

Palin's faults are well known, she's shown a penchant to be naive and boasts an intellectual capacity that only rivals that of George W. Bush.

The thing that Palin has going for her the most is that she is likeable. She's a much better face for the right wing than the likes of Ann Coulter. The main difference is that, even though her conservative positions are outdated and wrong for America, it's hard to argue against the notion that Palin is actually a nice person.

She's also most most popular export to come from that state since Jewel and the Alaska Pipeline. So while naitonal Republicans are in a tizzy blaming her for the lousy campaign they ran this year, they aren't likely to lift a finger to help her win any potential run for the Senate. But, being the maverick and Alaskan favorite daughter that she is - she may not need it.

Her name recognition is high back home, and she's brought a lot of attention to the state. Clearly she's popular there and it's likely the voters of that state are going to want to keep her around a bit. And if Democrats couldn't beat a politically-dead Stevens, then there probably isn't a candidate who can mount a credible challenge to Palin in a special election to the Senate (the better prize for Dems in that state may be the Governor's office anyway).

There could also be a future for Palin in broadcasting, or even as a two-term Governor of Alaska. But let's get real: she will not be the standard-bearer for the GOP's presidential ticket in 2012.

Ultimately, Sarah Palin is clearly not the future of the Republican Party. Yet she is likeable enough - and ambitious enough - to get past the GOP's attacks and pave a successful future of some kind.

Geography Again

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

I know that NONE of you think it's important to know the names of all the state capitals.

Do you think someone should know the names of the countries in NAFTA?

How about whether Africa is a country, or a continent?

Do you STILL think I'm being difficult if the "someone" is running for Vice President of the United States?

And amazingly, this isn't from Comedy Central. It's from Fox.

PalinAsPresident.com knocks it out of the park

A Few Things About Alaska

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

First, the accurate facts as known. Because here at DCW, we prize accuracy.

Newsweek is reporting that Spunky spent far more than reported on clothes. She was told to buy 3 suits. She blew WAAAAAY past there, and even shocked the donor who had offered to pay. John McCain was not privy to the information, because everyone felt it would have offended him. It will all come out in the audit. Here's the quote:

"Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast."
Next, something I cannot source. Therefore, I cannot vouch for the completeness of the accuracy to the level we strive for here at DCW. However, it passes the smell test.

While at the phone bank, we had a volunteer from Alaska. He was here in Pennsylvania because his mom lives here, and she was one of our volunteers. He and I had a conversation one night wherein he was explaining to me why, before he came down to work, he absentee voted for Obama, Young, and Stevens. Further, why he didn't care about the potential conviction. (When I spoke to him, the verdict had not yet been announced.)

He explained that Alaska is not like the rest of the country. The state does not get the same amount of shared funds that other states do, and that things are really expensive, due to the distance involved.

He further pointed out that the only way Alaska gets funding for the infrastructure projects they need is via earmarks, and Ted always brought them dollars. Then, the state would reallocate to the areas of greatest need. The monies would go for things like hospitals, roads, bridges, schools, and other legitimate uses. While there was some graft, without the earmarks, the state could not be self-supporting, as the tax base couldn't expand much more. Therefore, Ted is generally beloved.

A lot of the people he knows believe that electing Begich would not put him anywhere near the power position Stevens holds. Similar feelings and information about Young's position.

Further, he said that the graft related to Stevens had been a poorly-kept secret for decades. Ditto for Bill Allen of VECO fame. Here's the kicker: he claims that the reason that Ted was brought down NOW instead of a few years ago, or instead of never, is because it was one of the Palins' pet projects. I'm sourcing this, and will report with more certainty when I can prove the allegations.

Just thought you'd like to know what I'm working on in my spare time.

Question of the Day

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

With the election only days away, we're filling out our sample ballots now (ah heck, we knew who we were votin' for months ago). Though there is one race in which non-Democrats out west may seek some advice.

Who to vote for in the Alaska U.S. Senate race?

Change-oriented voters (which there seem to be a lot of these days) are gravitating towards Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, while there is dwindling support for Republican and (recently convicted) U.S. Senator Republican Ted Stevens.

So, Governor Palin - who ya votin' for?

Socialism and Redistribution

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Just for the record, ALL taxes redistribute money from one place to another. Sometimes, like under the GOP, from the poor to the rich, and from all of us to a shameless invasion of a sovereign state and the incarceration of innocents in Puerto Rico. Sometimes, from all of us to those little things we take for granted like roads, street lights, schools, police and fire departments, water treatment plants, etc., not to mention putting a man on the moon.

Oh, and then there's Alaska....

The Wardrobe

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Yesterday, the RNC said that the McCain campaign ordered the Spunky wardrobe. The McCain campaign contended that no, it was the RNC.

Fair is fair, and from following the discussion, it has become obvious that the clothes were picked FOR her, and that Spunky never set foot in any of the stores.

The politically interesting thing here is that there are different tax and expenditure laws governing who actually bought the clothes. But that's for the FEC and the IRS to figure out later.

The other thing is that the picture is from June of 2008, in an Alaska supermarket. Guess who's on the right?

Spunky and TV, Redux

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Yesterday, I wrote about the possibility of Spunky on TV. Seems that might not pass muster with current Alaska law.

Not that THAT has stopped her before.

And while we're on the topic of law, there may be some
problems with the Alaska pipeline deal.

Wait, a
REPUBLICAN in cahoots with an oil company AND a lobbyist?

The Future of Spunky

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Over at 236, they're thinking "Reality Show"

I'd have posted their "Name that Show" choices, but we don't use those words here at DCW.

Snark aside, assuming that we work our plan, and that plan is successful (take NOTHING for granted), what will John and Spunky be doing after November 4th?

John has said he'd go back to Arizona, but sadly, his term doesn't end until 2010. Although there is precedent for retiring early.

Spunky is facing legal problems, censure problems, childcare concerns, and the full slew of legal cases has not begun yet. (Which begs the question: if being Governor of Alaska is so important, how have they been faring without her? I mean, when John Lindsay attempted a run for President in 1972, the newspapers ran headlines saying "Come Back, Little Sheba", and he was "only" mayor of New York. Oh, wait, by all measures, NYC in 1972 was bigger and more complex than Alaska is now. ) Will she stay Governor? Will she give it all up for Hollywood?

Most seriously about Spunky, within a month of the election will be the Republican Governor's summit, and the RNC meeting. Both sessions will be setting tone as the minority party, and electing their leaders. Just something to ponder, I'll have details after the election.

Reality Check

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

From the Chicago Tribune:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin insisted in an interview with the Tribune on Thursday that she did not accept $150,000 worth of designer clothes from the Republican Party and "that is not who we are."

"That whole thing is just, bad!" she said. "Oh, if people only knew how frugal we are.

"It's kind of painful to be criticized for something when all the facts are not out there and are not reported," said Palin, saying the clothes are not
worth $150,000 and were bought for the Republican National Convention. (emphasis mine)
Now, I agree that clothes may not be WORTH what you pay for them, but the sticker is still the sticker. As in: I cannot imagine any pair of blue jeans being worth $400, but if you BUY that pair of jeans, they have still cost that much.

Thus the difference between what Spunky says the clothes are worth, and what someone actually signed a charge slip for.

GOP Women/GOP Values

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

There’s been a lot of chat about the $150,000 wardrobe redo Sarah Palin received. Also it turns out that there was a lot of money spent on make-up and a voice coach. Along with many others, I questioned the decision to spend money on clothes in lieu of a tutor. Some Republicans want their money back over the expenditures.

The McCain/GOP answer has been that we should be focusing on something other than clothing. And I agree. There is a much better story here. One that will resonate and affect the GOP after the election. Because it truly speaks to what that party has become, and whether it survives intact much beyond this election cycle. 2008 is transformational not only for the Democrats. Remember, the GOP schismed in 1964, and didn’t really recover until 1980, when they found a new voice in Reagan.

So how do clothes relate to the GOP in its entirety? It has to do with the base values of the party.

John McCain won the primary. After the election, people will look at the part of the GOP vote that was split by Mitt and Mike, the problems with Rudy and Fred’s campaigns, why people like Tom Tancredo never had a shot, but the bottom line is: John won. Definitively. It was not like the Democratic primary race where there were no fundamental policy differences between the candidates: ALL the Dems in contention agree with the platform.

Platforms define parties. In the GOP platform discussion, they spend a lot of time on stem cells, abortion, gay marriage and “family values”. Their tent is small, and yet internally divisive.

The GOP electorate selected a candidate to lead the ticket who was, supposedly, a “maverick”, someone not necessarily to the evangelical base of the party, nor the “whaddaya mean we can’t donate as much as we want to campaigns?” rich-right. He had some appeal to the Rockefeller base in that he’s always been anti-regulation. He had appeal to the part of the evangelical base that actually knew he shared their “values”.

He wanted to choose TLB Joe as his running mate, but rumour has it that it was nixed by Karl Rove. From my first post after her selection:

Next, and I HATE HATE HATE saying this: look at her clothes. While I tend to be oblivious to such things, most people, especially low-information voters, are not.

Finally, look at how she is treated by the Republicans. McCain had women choices: Kay Bailey Hutchison, Liddy Dole, Olympia Snowe, Christy Todd Whitman, Susan Collins, Jodi Rell, Linda Lingell, Jane Hull -- all Republican Senators or Governors with experience and portfolio. You might not know all of them, but they have stature. Will Sarah Palin be treated as a member of the club, or as a neophyte?

A few weeks later, I wrote about the evangelical question related to the relationship of men and women within the hard line churches. That is, that women must be subservient to men in terms of the roles they are allowed to have. They are not, for example, to be active leaders in the churches.

Had McCain picked any of the GOP women I listed in my first post, they would not have needed a wardrobe equal to more than three times the median income. While certainly women are held to a higher standard of dress than men, they have enough gravitas that “regular” suits would have done it.

Had she had the ability to intelligently articulate her positions, she wouldn’t be out on the stump saying things like “Someone once called me a redneck woman, and I said ‘thank you’” (I heard that on TV).

But most importantly in all this is the view of women IN the Republican Party BY the members of the Republican Party. After the election, will the party value in their women standard bearers good looking women over smart women? If the McShame-Spunky ticket wins, does the GOP become an effectual religious party, ruled by evangelicals? If so, would Spunky be relegated to a “Barbie” role in the administration? If they lose, will the evangelical base/financial base be unable to co-exist in the same party? If they lose, McCain will be blamed, and a vacuum for control will evolve: will the Mike Huckabee “make the Constitution subservient to the Bible” fringe win the internal battle? Will the Mittens economic sector? Will the GOP be forced to become more centrist as the minority party?

But above all, win or lose, after the election, will there be a female voice in the party? Strong and proud, or relegated to vacuously looking good?

And in answer to the question “Why do we care, we’re Democrats?” I say this: until we become a multi-party system, they are our counterpart. If we win, especially if we win a legitimate mandate, and we don’t find a way to work WITH them, we could lose big in two years. Remember what happened in 1994. And we need to know with whom we need to work.

Clothes Make the Man, or Woman?

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Politico is reporting that the RNC has spent more than $150,000 on clothes for Sarah Palin and crew. You can read the article, and view the slide show for the details, but as the female member of the DCW team, I have a few comments my cohorts here might not consider.

First, the bill at Barney's was $789.72. I doubt this, because about the only clothing you can buy at Barney's for that little money are the cheap jeans, and she's been wearing dresses and suits. Unless, of course, you buy from the co-op collection, but I viewed the slide show, and I'm doubting that.

The RNC spent close to $9500 at Macy's, and over five grand at Bloomingdale's. While I've never done it personally, I know it actually is easy to drop five grand at Bloomies in a brief period of time because I've watched people do it. But close to ten grand at Macy's? HHHMMM, I'm thinking it's a different Macy's from the one we have here where the "Everyday Value Long-Sleeve Crew Neck Tee" is $12.98. Honest, EVERY DAY. I know this because I own three of them.

In the interest of full disclosure, I prefer to spend as much time in jeans and Crocs as is humanly possible, because I value comfort over fashion. I do, however, clean up nicely when necessary, and yes, clothes cost. Good clothes usually need to be altered: a dart here, a tuck there. An initial fitting, the work, and the second try-on to make sure everything worked right.

So the thing that perplexes me is this: when you go for the fitting, you need to stand very still as you're attacked by a woman with a mouth full of straight pins channeling my grandmother (don't ask, it's a long story). Is there some reason that while Spunky was standing frozen to avoid getting pin pricked, her RNC handler couldn't have held up flash cards teaching her names of newspapers and Supreme Court decisions?

And the Hits Just Keep on Coming

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Yup, she was on SNL, you betcha'.

But this isn't going to be a good week for Spunky. You may remember that she was found guilty in the Alaskan Legislature's "Troopergate" probe. But what you may not know is that while that investigation was going on, Spunky and Todd requested that the Alaska Personnel Board do their own investigation.

The Palins claimed that thee Legislature's probe was politically driven, so they asked the board, which is under the auspices of the Governor's Office to do a parallel probe. The board hired Timothy Petumenos to undertake the probe as an independent council. This week, Todd and Spunky will be interviewed. The two investigations were going to be separate, but no more.

And just to make this more fun:
Timothy Petumenos was appointed as the independent investigator for the Personnel Board. The buzz around town is that he’s a good guy, a competent and aggressive trial lawyer, a straight-shooter, and will do his job well. Then came the awful revelation…Timothy Petumenos is…..a Democrat. (loud ominous chord plays on the Mudflats organ) And not only a Democrat, but one who had contributed to Tony Knowles 2006 gubernatorial campaign when he was running against Palin!(loud, slightly higher on the scale chord plays on the Mudflats organ)

Palin plays both sides of baseball fence

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

In NH yesterday:

“Red Sox fans know how to turn an underdog into a victor,” a timely applause line given that the Sox trail the Tampa Bay Rays three-games-to-one in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
In FL last week:

“How about those Tampa Bay Rays?” Ms. Palin said after the Rays defeated the Chicago White Sox.

“You know what that tells me? It tells me that the people in this area know a little something about turning an underdog into a victor.” -NY Times
