One of the contributor's on CNN announced that Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer will endorse the winner of the Montana primary. It's a conditional endorsement, and there's no direct quote, but it might be something to watch out for in the coming days.

Miranda said...

From PolitickerMD.com

"ANNAPOLIS-- Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Towson) told PolitickerMD.com today that "it's possible" he could endorse a presidential candidate by Wednesday, one-day after the final nominating contests in South Dakota and Montana.

Appearing at the District 30 Democratic Club Cookout and Fundraiser in Annapolis, Sarbanes would not say which candidate he would endorse. The representative from Maryland's 3rd Congressional District has long pledged to remain uncommitted until the process is finalized on Tuesday.

"I'm certainly not going to make a decision before Tuesday," Sarbanes said. "We're coming to the end of the process and I'll think you'll see a fair amount of closure taking hold."

As for his view on the role of a superdelegate, Sarbanes said, "Superdelegates were created to exercise some measure of independence, but they take their cue from various surrounding factions."

I think that most likely we won't see much until Tuesday and then we will see the flood at the time that the polls close, allowing Obama to make the pledged delegates as they come in what puts him over the top and puts a quick end to things, while making it seem the the voters and not the SDs decided it.

Steve said...

At the top of the Superdelegate Endorsements page the text reads "(Note: Florida, Michigan and Democrats Abroad superdelegates get 1/2 vote each, so there are actually 800 superdelegates casting 823.5 votes)", but I think you actually mean to say there are 855 superdelegates castin 823.5 votes since otherwise someone's getting more than 1.0 votes!

Remember Kevin Rodriguez, the super from Virgin Island?
We were worried about him. Angry islanders (Obama: 90% of vote) couldn't find him after he re-switched his endorsment back to Hillary. Some thought he might be jet-skiing somewhere, others feared for his well-being. No need to worry! Kevin is just fine. He is following Hillary around on her jet as a living proof that every superdelegate can change their mind.
Take good care of him, Hillary. Barack has got a bigger jet.

i agree Miranda. Jim Clyburn has said he'll endorse Tuesday at 11:00am. This could get the ball rolling, but if the 30 or so can endorse by the time the polls close, and before Barack speaks in St. Paul, it can be the voters of Montana and South Dakota that put him over the top.

tmess2 said...

I think Obama would like to get the 32 unpledged delegates that he needs before 9 pm EDT on Tuesday (when the polls close in the west part of South Dakota), so that he is clearly in range to be put over by the pledged delegates from Montana.

I also think a lot of the unpledged would prefer to wait until Wednesday morning.

This could be the struggle over the next 48 hours as Obama's staff tries to convince the unpledged of the importance of beating the Wednesday morning stampede.

Regardless of speeches, I think the unpledged can do the math -- 17 from Montana and South Dakota + 17 add-ons + 2 from Iowa + 5 from Edwards in Florida+ 4 from Pelosi Club only leaves him one short (with way too many places to pick up the 1 without needing other unpledged delegates).

They can wait back and let others get on board first (maybe extending the contest until the 15th) or they can endorse Monday or Tuesday.

lompe,

I wonder if Kevin Rodriguez has given any thought to how he is going to get home :-)

Unknown said...

tmess2,

i liked your post, tho 2 questions: 1) Matt and Oreo have 6 in the Pelosi club, but you say only 4? 2) i'm curious about the 17 add-ons that you refer to, in the context of helping Barack reach the magic number by Tuesday night. All the remaining add-ons aren't scheduled to be identfied until well after Tuesday. am I missing something?

lompe said...

The rumour is that Obama has got more promises from supers than he needs, and that he has told Hillary this. The supers will be coming out in large numbers this week and everyone hopes that Hillary will concede graciously.

Trudy
I'm not sure if Mr. Rodgiquez wants to go home in the near future ;)

Unknown said...

I am so confused. Many SuperDelegates are clearly planning to support Obama AFTER the primaries. But there is so much more value to the party and the campaign if 30 of the SuperDelegates do it before so the VOTERS put Obama over the top, not party elders. Why don't they come out now? Their chairman has asked them to. Maybe Carter can't come out, but the lower profile ones would benefit themselves and the party and put them in the position of having done a favor for the future president.
I don't get it. Can some one help me?

Bull Schmitt said...

Graham -

You're spot-on.. but for everyone that underestimates Sen. Obama's political skills, there's someone that ends us being surprised.

I'm sure Axelrod and others are making the case behind the scenes that people who declare before Tuesday night will be remembered.. the ones who speak up *after he hits 2117, not so much. It's just common-sense politics.

I'm not counting him out just yet ;)

tmess2 said...

My reason for 4 is that I am not sure that all 6 will endorse. I can easily see Cantwell not switching and Pelosi and Van Hollen not endorsing while it is still contested. So I used four to be safe.

The 17 add-ons is again being on the cautious side, there are 20 add-ons left from "Obama" states but I can see the possibility of split delegations or local politics trumping national. In my own state, Clinton probably had the majority at our State Committee meeting (going by my memory of the size of the caucuses for PLEOs) but we still went with out two state elected officials even though one was uncommitted and the other an Obama supporter.

Tomorrow will be a very busy day!! Looks like the Pelosi club may finally be ready!!

"There has been no pressure on me from Obamaland," writes Christine Pelosi, an uncommitted from California who has vowed to back the pledged delegate winner, almost assuredly Obama, once the primaries are over. "I'm not sure who's doing what before the polls close. My sense is that once the votes are in, the supers like me will speak out."

Bob Mulholland, a senior adviser to the California Democratic Party and an uncommitted superdelegate, says he too has been confronted with silence from the Obama folks. "They haven't called in a week," he told The Huffington Post.

Another superdelegate, who asked not to be identified, said he had talked with four other superdelegates none of whom had been contacted by the Illinois Democrat. "I haven't gotten anything from him," he said. "I had another superdelegate call me and say he heard I was going to come out for Obama on Tuesday but that wasn't the case. I think he was playing us off each other."

Is this cause for concern? Mulholland doesn't think so. "They already have got two or three dozen or so lined up," he said. "Of course they do. I'm sure they do, including a lot of members of Congress. So, I think that is already over... Assume he wins one or two states you let that happen and then Wednesday morning you let the others come out."

Unknown said...

I would love a victory dance tom orrow night in St Paul... A masterstroke of the Obama campaign to wrap up the nom on the same stage as the RNC... I make BO's chances over JMc in November 80/20... What do you think?

Miranda said...

I believe that just in picking the place he picked he has been very telling on having them lined up. Why pick there if you aren't going there, not being in Montana or South Dakota for a reason? We have learned from our current fearless leader, you fight them on their turf before letting them bring it to yours...no matter how unlikely it is that they will win...or even attack you for that matter?? Tomorrow is the final (or finally) Super Tuesday.

Plus, he doesn't need to call them, he knows he has them, we all have for months and he doesn't want too many to endorse anyway. It will just raise the anger level of Clinton fans and those he can get would be lost if the supers and that decision clinches it. I figure we will see enough for him to have a good buffer between 9am EST and when the first numbers start rolling in. Most right after the polls close. Will be a busy night tomorrow.

I do hope that Byrd is okay.

Unknown said...

Keep in mind that Obama if he wins MT- has at least 2 supers who will endorse based on the winner- Margaret Campbell and Governor Schweitzer, with the 6 in the Pelosi club, and 16 that Obama should get in pledged delegates tomorrow + 2 pledged that have switched, Obama only needs 14 additional supers tomorrow...

Jaya said...

Well - here's some Twin Cities speculation:

1- It is the host of the GOP convention

2- It is the home of Tim Kaine (Harvard law; wife a judge who went to Princeton; 3 teenagers, brings along a new state -VA) He certainly wouldn't outshine or out-elder BO.

3- Will be campaigning for Al Franken(well I had to throw that in)

4- A swing state - which BO took

5- Minnesota has been a model of good government for years - so he has his pick of issues to showcase

It's a good question - Why Minnesota?

Unknown said...

Why Minnesota? How would you feel if McCain clinched the Rep nom in Denver at the Pepsi Center on a night that there was no primary in CO? Great move by BO... Transition (they have been calling it a "pivot") into the general election campaign makes sense...

Unknown said...

& btw, MN is not a swing state... Firmly BO (Dem) territory IMHO... That's the motivation!

tmess2 said...

It's the last time he will get full national media attention until he picks his VP. Doing it at the site of the Republican Conveniton allows him to include lines like "In 3 months John McCain is going to be speaking on this stage and he is going to tell the American people x (something like we need to stay the course). But we know that this country can't afford 4 more years of that bankrupt policy. We don't need a third term of George Bush. We need a new direction."

Unknown said...

IMHO : Obama does NOT have the delegates lined up! Does Obama's campaign have a history of lying?
***
David Plouffe, the manager of the Obama campaign, said. “We’d like them to come out publicly as soon as we can get them.”

It remained unclear, Mr. Plouffe said, if Mr. Obama could secure enough of the endorsements before Tuesday evening.
****
Let's not be part of setting false expectations!

Why would Obama hold them back?

Obama wants this over yesterday and if he had had 50+ yesterday he would have had them come out.
Also look at the pattern it doesn't indicate a back log that he is bringing out every two hours or so.
It's chaotic drips and spurts.

Supers can come out without talking to Obama, they just have to to a press release or stick up a lawn sign.

I personally wish the Dems were being smarter and braver.

I think he will get it by tomorrow, maybe, but if you want Obama to win do what you can! Take nothing for granted. Call a Super, Call South Dakota (He is down in the polls), Call Montana... it is close!
Democracy is not a spectator sport!
Obama 08!

That could set the stage for a "Live from New York" video feed of Bill and Hillary (both supers) announcing they are switching to Obama. She could go a long way toward vindicating herself in one brief dramatic and climactic moment. Maybe she could even lead it off by introducing the Virgin Island super to switch one more time so she could be the second switch to put him over the top. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.

The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City. She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.

Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge her plans.

And I gotta give Dawson some real credit for showing guts: he now has the distinction of being the only NY super to endorse Obama. He's gonna catch hell at home for that one!

That just leaves Rahm Emmanuel (the only undelcared IL super)...

One interesting thing about endorsements today and yesterday is that several MI-supers have endorsed Obama. He now how a clear lead there against Clinton. Taking MI to cred-comitte would be even more difficult when Obama clearly have more support from important people in MI.

"The fact is the Obama people already know they have my vote when the polls close tonight," Carter told The Associated Press after speaking at the Georgia World Congress Center Tuesday afternoon.

Carter, a superdelegate, has remained officially neutral in the race but has offered high praise to Obama. Carter has noted that his children, grandchildren and their spouses back the Illinois senator.

Obama Announces Support from Edwards Pledged Delegates

By Sam Graham-Felsen - Jun 3rd, 2008 at 5:12 pm EDT

CHICAGO, IL—The Obama Campaign today announced that the following delegates pledged to former Senator John Edwards have committed to vote for Senator Obama at the Democratic National Convention. With today’s announcement, every delegate pledged to Senator Edwards in Iowa (four delegates), New Hampshire (four delegates) and South Carolina (eight delegates) will be voting for Senator Obama at the National Convention. In addition, 10 of the 13 Edwards delegates from Florida will be voting for Senator Obama at the National Convention.

The updated roster adds ten delegates today to Obama’s delegate total, raising it to 2,099.5 and leaving the campaign only 18.5 delegates away from clinching the nomination at 2,118.

California and DC Superdelegate for Obama; Delegate Countdown - 16.5 To Go
by Sam Graham-FelsenTuesday, June 03, 2008 at 05:17 PM
California DNC member Kamil Hasan released the following statement today endorsing Barack Obama for President:

I am endorsing Senator Obama as Democratic Party’s nominee not only because he has clearly won more pledged delegates, but I sincerely believe that he can provide the necessary leadership in taking this country in a new direction at this critical juncture in our history. Fortunately, we have had two excellent candidates. I have great admiration for Senator Clinton and the way she has run a spirited, high energy, issues based campaign. I am looking forward to continue to energize the Indo-American and the South-Asian communities in ensuring that Senator Obama becomes the next President of the United States. His election as the President of the United States will not only help unite a very divided nation, but elevate the image of the United States in the world to a level not seen since John Kennedy was the President.
District of Columbia superdelegate and DNC member Ben Johnson also endorsed Barack Obama.

Johnson said...

It’s time to close ranks behind Barack Obama, who has run an outstanding campaign and made many of us proud. This is no way diminishes my respect and admiration for Senator Clinton, who is a fine public servant who I have known for many years. But it is clear that Senator Obama has the momentum needed to help us win in November and I am proud to endorse him today.

elaware Secretary of State Harriet Windsor, Delaware Democratic Chair John Daniello, and DNC Member Rhett Ruggerio also announced today that they will vote for Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer. The three superdelegates released the following statements today.

“As a superdelegate from Delaware, I am representing the people of my state, where Barack Obama won in our primary. Senator Obama is an outstanding candidate who will unify the Democratic Party and be a strong candidate to beat Senator McCain in the November election,” Secretary of State Harriet Windsor said.

“Senator Obama has inspired Democrats across the country over the course of this primary, and we saw here in Delaware that his appeal will help our candidates up and down the ballot. As a state party chairman, I know how valuable this contest has been in energizing the grassroots, and I wanted every state to be able to participate and reap the benefits of this historic race. Now that all of the primaries and caucuses are behind us, I believe it’s time for Democrats to unite in taking on John McCain, and I'm pleased to be joined by Rhett Ruggerio and Secretary Windsor in endorsing Barack Obama for president,” Delaware Democratic Party Chairman John Daniello said.

“The Democratic Party has been blessed with two incredibly strong and extremely capable candidates. Its time though, that we as a Party, unite behind our nominee and begin to focus all of our energy on the general election. Senator Obama has proven that he has the vision, the fortitude and the character to effect real change and lead us to victory in November,” DNC Member Rhett Ruggerio said.

I've done a thorough search of the delegate lists based on the Green Papers, and have come up with the following pledged delegate count:

DemConWatch (Current):
Obama - 1742
Edwards - 12 (1 in NH, 1 in SC, 5 in IA, 5 in FL)

With All Edwards switches listed above:
Obama - 1751.5
Edwards - 2.5 (0 in NH, 0 in SC, 1 in IA*, 1.5 in FL)

*GP estimated add-on from future state convention, this not-yet pledged delegate will be reallocated to either Clinton or Obama at the state convention.
