John McCain is not the man I once thought he was. At least I realize this now.
Good night y'all! until the morrow.
The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night's sleep. ~E. Joseph Cossman
I'd like to think Obama would appreciate that sentiment also.
Oh, I volunteer phone banked for a very short period of time today.... For some reason they had me calling rednecknowheresville.... it was terrible. I called in support of Senator Obama and Governor Warner. A dude responded, "that muslim!?!?!?!"
"He's not muslim sir."
"Oh, he's not?!?!"
"No, he's a Christian sir."
"Oh, well he IS a f*in' piece of s***!!!"
"I'm sorry you feel that way, I have nice night sir."
apissedant-You actually made my husband laugh with that rednecksville post. That probably wasn't too far from where we live.
Apissedant - That video is difficult to watch. Wow. And I don't mean that in a good way. It should required viewing on the way into the voting booth in November.
soft,
LOL, no offense intended! I have several friends, and have had several coworkers from the middle of no where, and many of them are wonderful people. Unfortunately, there is also a large collection of close minded ignorant people too. I've never lived in a small town, so I don't know why that is. Maybe you can explain that to me. ;)
Aunt Judy,
I love that video for that reason. It doesn't hold anything back. I literally got choked up the first time I saw it.
SS - I had the same reaction reading the rednecknowheresville post. I figured that was a call to Yams' house in Houston....probably in the outskirts of the city, toward Magnolia, Conroe or maybe as far as Vidor.
goodnight ss
Dave,
That is a daunting summer schedule. I only have 14 credit hours left, so I'm bored out of my mind this summer. I'm doing some research, some volunteer work, and fixing a few things around the house... but it just isn't enough. I had two classes, but I already finished them.
Good luck with that class load, and if you have too many scholarships... pass a few this way. ;)
On the plus side, my adviser approved me to teach two labs next semester! WOOHOO!! I got to teach two labs for one week last semester because one of the grad students had a death in the family. It was terrible for her, but I loved teaching the second lab. When I only teach the class once, I don't get to learn from my mistakes as well and improve my teaching skills. The second lab I taught was 10 times more smooth than the first one. Practice makes perfect... well it makes better at least.
Oh, it also means twice the money, which is always good too. :)
One other undergrad is also approved to do a grad student job and teach labs too. She has a 4.0, won every single Chemistry award possible, and guess what her chosen profession is?
Teaching high school! It is actually really cool that such a smart and accomplished person wants to and is willing to do this. Lots of people are trying to convince her to go to graduate school and teach college instead, but she won't hear it. She wants to mold young minds. I find that really admirable.
Dave,
HAHA!! Yes, I had to hold back so much from responding. The UT thing, and the bastardization of polls, and the use of public opinion polls to decide policy when it suits one's own interest was a bit annoying. Now I guess I technically responded, but it is to you and not them, so maybe that makes it ok.
I will see what I can do on sending the scholarships your way p'd ant. ;)
Congrats on being approved for teaching the two lab sections. And yes, practice makes better.
As far as the student that wants to teach high school students....that is VERY admirable. Kudos to her for not following the "traditional" path and doing what will bring HER desires to fruition. Unlike the selfish dolts on this thread who insinuate that teaching is not an honorable profession.
AP,
Make that same call to most phones in Martinsville, Indiana, and you probably would get the same type of response. In fact, large swaths of southern Indiana would give that same type of response. If you didn't check the phone number, you might think you were calling certain parts of Alabama or Mississippi.
Fortunately, there are areas in Indiana where there are progressives, and also some almost conservatives who actually think, and would find the attitude displayed by the respondent to your call to be evilly repugnant.
Mike
p'd ant, what do you think about http://tiny.cc/yVjkX ?
It's about John McCain going to Colombia to push for the free trade deal.
StopO/Yam,
Daily offer that you haven’t acknowledged yet…
I will take Obama in the general election and you can have the field. I will cover any bet amount you would like. Put your money where your mouth is... unless even you don’t believe what you say.
________
Does anyone think StopO/Yam will respond this time? Did he grow a set?
Stay tuned.
Last week I downloaded Firefox v3.0 and started to explore it.
Once you get past the idiosyncrasies of what Mozilla calls 'the Awesome Bar', it a good browser.
One thing I really like:
When a post at DCW (and other sites) has a link, it displays the entire link, even it it goes two, three or more lines. When you highlight and copy it, it copies the entire link without hard breaks, so you don't have to copy/paste, then return for more copy/paste.
It seems quite a bit faster than Firefox v2.0, and certainly faster than Microsuck's IE.
Mozilla claims it has fixed the memory-leak problem that plagued v2.0 which was a problem for many.
Built-in spell checker, and an extensive library of add-ons makes it my browser of choice.
Anyone else try it yet, and your experience with it? If anyone wants info on changing the way the 'Awesome Bar' works, I'll post a link.
Mike
Mike,
I did get one very nice caller as well, and I talked about Mark Warner and John Warner. I realized I was calling a Republican area, so I didn't press on Barack Obama. I basically explained that John Warner may be a Republican, but I myself, and many other Democrats actually like and support him. He is a common sense, intelligent, and caring Republican. We have the same goals, but we often disagree on how to achieve those goals.
With his retirement, Mark Warner seems like a great replacement. He enjoyed nearly 80% approval ratings when he left office. He took a 6 billion dollar debt and created a surplus. He achieved bipartisan agreements and received support from Republicans and Democrats alike.
I don't know if she'll actually vote for him, but just the fact that she was open to listening and taking on new information was a nice change of pace.
I have said before on this post that Republican does not mean evil, and Democrat does not mean wonderful. I support the candidate who I believe to be intelligent, honorable, and caring. It just so happens that I typically find that person to be the Democrat. I watched John Warner on CSPAN as a teenager and a twenty something young adult, and I was always impressed.
You know, realizing what I just said, it is amazing I still got any action in the bedroom. What kind of teenager watches CSPAN!??!!
ROFLMAO p'd ant!
Dave,
She will get to accomplish her goals and enjoy her life, it just so happens that her goals and happiness are not based exclusively on how much money is in her bank account or what type of car she is driving.
I decided we need to be like the Republicans and rename their programs to fit what we like. My proposed name is "fair trade" to replace "free trade." The idea of fair trade is to equal the playing field. The European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom, and a few other nations have all import taxes removed. Countries like Mexico and China either keep them or have new ones imposed. Fair trade revolves around a few basic principles: 1)Environmental protection- Industries must operate comparably clean plants in order to qualify. They must at the very least meet US standards.
2)Worker Safety- The workers must be as protected as American workers. There must be something comparable to workers compensation for on the job injuries, and the ability to sue the company (or otherwise gain restitution) if they are proven to be operating negligently.
3)Child labor laws- Too obvious to describe.
4)Pay- Pay must be comparable. It does not have to be comparable in dollar amounts, but it must be comparable in what those dollars buy. Health care, food, shelter, education, and the like must all be affordable with a reasonable work week.
The idea that we are going to sell our thousand dollar computers to Colombian workers making 25 cents an hour is laughable. It has proven very misguided, and ineffective. My home state of Michigan and all those surround it are ghost towns. From my graduating class of 225 students, I know of 5 of us living in Virginia now. There are 48 states that others may have moved to. The great exodus is not good for Michigan or any other state in this country.
Apissedant
I finally read this post of yours where you stated that you tutor: Nursing students, business majors, medical students, chemistry majors, and biochemistry majors have all asked me for help and tutoring .
Outrageous. Impossible. You seen not to know the difference between premed students and medical students. Premed students are undergraduates aspiring to get to a medical school. Medical students are graduate students who already have an undergraduate degree. Organic Chemistry is not taught in medical schools except as a one week refresher of what you should have learned as an undergraduate.
Unless things are different now, there was no such thing as biochemistry major. You can study Biochem as a grad student, but it is not called a major. Major is lingo only for undergrad. Wow. For undergrads, biochem is only a course within the Chemistry department, not a combination of Biology and Chemistry.
There is no way that nursing students take Organic Chemistry. They may get a Cliff not version. Apissedant, Organic Chemistry is at least second year chemistry and requires inorganic chemistry as a prerequisite. Nursing students spend 2 years altogether earning the RN certificate (unless the student is pursuing a BS, RN which is a 4 year degree with limited exposure to the hard-core sciences).
Do you even know what Organic Chemistry is? Give me examples of C6H12O6 compounds. What is the difference between an alkane and an alkene and an alkyne. I took Organic Chemistry over 30 years ago and I still remember this.
Sad for you to pretend to be what you are not. Whom do you intend to impress?
mike,
Keep reading. I mentioned that I teach a DIFFERENT CLASS ALTOGETHER NOW. I was ASSISTING in Organic Chemistry. I now TEACH Chemistry 101 and 102. This is general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry for nursing students. I did not include this in the "tutoring Organic Chemistry portion," just the tutoring portion. I am not going to get involved in irrelevant insults and arguments over non-issues. I assure you all I have told you is true, and that I honestly believe every policy and governmental idea I have proposed. I have in no way lied, or intentionally twisted anything to meet my needs, or to make myself appear more qualified or more intelligent than I actually am.
If I wanted to do this, it seems like a lowly student would be a poor choice, don't you think?
Agreed, unfortunately Republicans are not in favor of fair trade, they are only interested in free trade that lines their buddies pockets.
Anheuser-Busch is even getting in on the action of outsourcing.
Mike,
As to the medical student part, that was obviously a mistake in typing. I had previously referred to them as premed students in every other post. This is what I quite obviously meant, but I also obviously mispoke. I have never tutored a medical student you are correct. Organic Chemistry is quite obviously a 200 or 300 level class (depending on University) that med students take in undergraduate coursework. I have obviously had no reason for interaction with medical students.
Mike,
Attempting to not get negative, it takes restraint, so give me a second.....
Inorganic Chemistry is a senior level class that is most definitely not a requirement for Organic Chemistry. General Chemistry is a prerequisite for Organic Chemistry, which I fulfilled with my AP score from 2000. I will not answer silly questions about alkynes, alkanes, and alkenes, because it is such a simple question that general education students could answer it, and there are wikipedia articles explaining all in detail. Also, it is just simple, again, if I wanted to lie myself up, student would be a dumb choice. You think you would ask a question about Markovnikov's rule, or something that actually had a little more to do with O-chem.
Mike,
There is a Biochemistry major program for Undergraduates.
UCSD - Offers it as Biochemistry and Cell Biology B.S.
Some other Biochem programs
http://www.biochem.arizona.edu/dept/undergrads.html
http://chemistry.asu.edu/undergrad/programIntro.asp#BSBiochem
There are hundreds of other Biochem programs.
Apissedant,
Sorry, I don’t buy a mistype. No one in academics would ever confuse Premed with medical student. You have done this several times. I seem to recall that that fact stuck in my craw before, but I chose not to challenge you on it. A premed cannot be confused for a medical student except by someone who does not know what he is talking about. You, as an undergrad instructor, would never meet a medical student. You are quite simply a liar.
Apissedant,
Yes, the difference between them is trivial, but I bet that you cannot answer it inspite of being able to Google it. Go ahead and google it, then answer the question.
Mike,
Believe what you will... with the exception of that, my only reference (to my knowledge) of medical students was talking of several premed students who have already been accepted to medical school. I said myself that I have no interactions with medical students, so what you're attempting to debate I am not sure. Did you google Markovnikov's rule yet oh great doctor?
Apissedant,
How about the C6H12O6? You have been exposed.
Mike,
How many letters are in the word four, for, and fort? Come on... answer it. I won't believe you can count unless you answer it.
Alkyne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alkynes are hydrocarbons that have at least one triple bond between two carbon atoms, with the formula CnH2n-2.
(Yes I did not answer the other two. In fact, I didn't even answer this one, I nearly copied and pasted to show what a trivial and silly question it was. This is why when I asked Stop a question (who claims to be a nuclear engineer) about nuclear power (energy required for a fast neutron to cause fission in Uranium-235 atom upon collision), I first attempted to google the answer, and when I was unable to find it, I then asked the question. He of course did not actually answer the question.)
Really? That's your test? I didn't have to type anything, just literally copy and paste? What does that prove? I could be an 8 year old that knows how to type based on that. Do you still claim to not insult me or be negative? Seriously, done with this conversation. I have refrained from insulting you out of respect to this site and the people posting on it as well as reading it. I will now ignore you out of disrespect to you.
"Sad for you to pretend to be what you are not. Whom do you intend to impress?"
Truly interesting question! Students at this Site should answer to themselves!
I am enjoying this thread more now!!
I get the feeling these Students are exaggerating a little bit on their Majors, GPA etc. Maybe, I am wrong. Well, I should not doubt their words - may be they are all sincere people!
Anyway, who cares!

Aunt Judy:
Yamaka said he is living closer to TMC, Houston. Is it near Conroe? On the outskirts? You are a Texan. You should be knowing Houston well.
On the map, TMC is very close to the Downtown!! What a bigoted thinking! Senatorial District 13 to which he was an Elected Delegate covers a portion of SW Houston, TMC and TX Southern University! Ya, for you it is a rural area at the outskirt of Houston!!
Stay tuned. See you tomorrow!!
Dave,
You still there? I'm done with childish conversations. You can answer Mike's questions if you want, if you took high school Chemistry or have google it should be easy, and prove that the questions are stupid.
As to the IUPAC name for whatever formula he listed, it can be found for searching SDBS on Google. The first link will be a database of spectra from Japan. Type in any formula and it will not only tell you the name of most of the possible compounds, but also give IR, NMR, and several other results of those compounds when tested.
p'd ant, ya I'm still here. The only issue I was addressing with him was that there ARE in fact Biochemistry Undergrad programs throughout the United States when he claimed "Unless things are different now, there was no such thing as biochemistry major." And indeed things ARE different now.
All I can say is that I'm really glad he is not my physician.
Stop,
Your idea is that those of us who claim to be students are attempting to lie up our positions to seem more important, but those of you claiming to be doctors and nuclear engineers are not? Wouldn't doctor or nuclear engineer be a better lie? Also may I ask, why have you failed to respond to my question on a fast neutron?
You answer this, and I will show you an edited transcript removing personal information. Apparently not tonight though, I forgot leoonline is down for service from 12-6 every night.
Apissedant,
A chemistry teacher would simply give me a one sentence answer, but you instead pasted something from a website. I shall leave you alone and not further embarrass you. For future reference, stop being so belligerent. The fact that I never before took you on does not mean that you can continue to try to bully posters. Every time a poster posts something that does not correspond to your communist world view, you go in an immediate warpath. I hope you have learned something in the last 24 hours.
Dave,
LOL, I didn't even notice that part of his post. Yeah, biochemistry is huge. We have more biochemists at my school than we do chemists.
"How about the C6H12O6?"
Is this not a sweet question!?
Can hexose produces 32 net ATPs? Or What?
Oh, learned 40 years ago!
Can hexose produce 32 ATPs?
p'd ant, ya I know. Biochem has been huge all around the country for at least a decade now. For a "physician" who is supposed to be up on all the latest should have known this already. Perhaps he is like John McCain - um, OLD?
Mike,
You proved nothing. EVERYONE on this thread can answer your questions. Why would I answer a question that proves nothing? Why have you failed to answer Markovnikov's rule or the number of letters in four? You actually proved your own lack of knowledge, and possibly your own lies. You failed to realize biochemists exist, and stated that inorganic chemistry is a prerequisite for organic. You claim to have majored in chemistry, you think you'd know better.
http://uc.odu.edu/advising/docs/curriculumsheets/2006-2008/SC-CHEMISTRY.pdf
ATP is biochemistry and biology, not chemistry. Get your subjects straight.
ok p'd ant - I'm done for the night. Daily Show is on and I just really need a good laugh tonight.
I was wrong earlier - it appears as though two villages in TX are missing their idiots.
stop,
I informed you how to find the answer to that question. I refer you to SDBS. Which makes it not a sweet question, because another search, or even a google search can give the answer. I asked you a question that to my knowledge cannot be answered by google, and you have avoided the question for a week.
Ok, seriously, enough with both of you. You have shown a complete lack of knowledge and asked questions that were either terribly simple, or not in even involving the correct subject. I will not again regress in an immature "whose manhood is bigger? You better prove it," competition with two men who claim to be well educated adults over the age of 50.
Dave,
LOL!!! Well if you're out I'm out. I should probably sleep so I can.... crap, research got canceled tomorrow. I guess I'll finally put in the ceiling fan that has been sitting next to my bed for a month. ;)
Stop
I shall break my rule this time. Your answer obviously demonstrated deep knowledge about the compound. Notice how you got ATP involved. That is the kind of answer that would convince someone that there is some knowledge beyond googling something. Wanna bet Apis has no clue what any of these mean?
Apissedant,
“ATP is biochemistry and biology, not chemistry. Get your subjects straight.”
Stop disgracing yourself. ATP can be involved in some types with that formula. You are simply a student at some community college and you want to pretend to be some hot-shot professor.
Hey Mike,
You claim to be a physician?
- What is an endothelial keratoplasty (EK)?
- When is an EK recommended?
- What are two of the most common reasons for an EK?
- How long does it take to recover from an EK?
- Who developed the first form of EK, and when? (Hint - the EK was not developed in the US.)
Ancillary question 1 - where does that person practice medicine?
Ancillary question 2 - who are some of the leading practitioners of EK in the US, and where do they practice - specific doctors only, please. (Hint - there are several, so I'll take any four or five of the ten or so most noted.)
Let's see your credentials by a response to those questions. Unless you are a doctor and can quickly reference a med text book, you'll be scratching your head about some of those questions. And if you are a doctor, but you are NOT up to date, you'll get the wrong answer from the med text books.

Simple. Do you know that not all physicians are ophthalmoloigsts? Do you know what is an ophthalmologist? I am an Ob/Gyn.
You have already posted that you have EK. One thing I have is a great memory. I also remember that your husband died of AIDS.
Mike in MD
You just demonstrated a total lack of knowledge about the medical field. You don’t understand that there are specialists. I know nothing about ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, etc beyond what I learned in medical school and as a rotating intern 30 or so year ago. But, for Ob/Gyn, fire away. Ask me anything you like.
Mike said...
You have already posted that you have EK.
??? I do not have EK. I have FECD.
I also remember that your husband died of AIDS.
Incorrect.
You just demonstrated a total lack of knowledge about the medical field.
You have demonstrated all day a total lack of knowledge about what people know outside of their 'specialty'. Maybe you don't know anything inside or outside your 'specialty', thus giving you a lot of time to spend on this forum?
One thing I have is a great memory.
Better get that memory checked.
I will need either an EK or a PK sometime in the future, and I will need one on each eye.
I live in Maryland, have never been a resident of Massachusetts nor California, traveled one time to Canada more than 35 years ago, so I could not have been married to my life partner.
And I posted that he died of lung cancer, not AIDS. Neither of us ever tested positive for AIDS.
As I said, better get that 'great memory' tested, as just about everything you posted in reference to me within the last hour was incorrect.
Mike
BTW Mike,
What is an 'ophthalmoloigst' I know what an ophthalmologist is, but I've never heard of an 'ophthalmoloigst'.

Husband is a lose term, but the point is about a man needing a husband. For someone with your lifestyle you don’t know much. The test is not for AIDs. It is for HIV.
You seem to have forgotten that I posted that I no longer need to work. I can post whenever I please.
I am waiting for a question in Ob/Gyn. I understand that the subject is alien to you, but if you have a female acquaintance perhaps she can hint on a question for you.
Mike in MD
You are being silly. Last time you attacked me at this site, I let it go. Not this time.
I have never attacked you, but you seem to be riled by my comments. I understand that you share similar lifestyle with Apissedant.
Mike in MD
OK, your boyfriend died of lung cancer (you object to husband). Exactly what was the tissue diagnosis? Was it primary or secondary lung cancer? Are you sure he did not have pneumocystis pneumonia?
Mike in MD
“As I said, better get that 'great memory' tested, as just about everything you posted in reference to me within the last hour was incorrect.”
You are right. My memory is failing me. I don’t remember ever aiming any post at you in the last hour except now that I am responding to your attacks.
Non-small cell carcinoma.
As to the use of 'husband' in reference to our relationship, I respect the legal aspects of marriage, and will not use such terms until the civil rights of gays and lesbians are respected by the civil authorities. That respect will be demonstrated by allowing people in love to marry, without regard to the sex, or sexual identity, of the partners.
As to your comment I posted that I no longer need to work.
No longer need to work? Retired by choice? Or driven out of work because of inattention to your duties (part of which is keeping up on latest practices), and can't find work any more?
And every time you use a term, such as 'commie', 'effete liberal', or any other derogatory Lush Rimbaugh-type term to describe the political beliefs of most of the people who post here, you have aimed that post at me also, and you show what a low-life scum you really are.

Roach:
You ARE a man of short fuse, indeed.
Are you not moving to CA or MA?
That would cool your nerves! lol
I pity you, Roach. You are being kicked on all sides! lol. You invited it this time.
I must admit you ARE a good speller!!lol
Good Day. Talk to you in the evening.
"That respect will be demonstrated by allowing people in love to marry, without regard to the sex, or sexual identity, of the partners."
Roach:
I don't think most Americans would allow you to use the word "marriage" if two males or females are united.
You call it civil union. But don't ever call it "marriage" which is solely reserved for a man and a woman, who can together in love procreate and perpetuate the human race, IMO.
Partners in civil union may be given whatever rights the States decide to provide them with. Fed should not get involved.
I have a question to you and others: In 2008, will you call yourself openly Gay/Lesbian w/o any reservation, assume there is no scorn from the Society whatsoever?
My sense is many of you don't feel comfortable to use that term yourself. If others use, then you call them homophobes etc. There seems to be an inner demon in many of you who tells you that there is something inappropriate in your behavior/personality. Am I wrong, or what?
Forgive me, if I hurt your feelings.
I just want to understand the people of alternate life style. That's it.
I never had any contact with a Gay or Lesbian in my 59 years (in Dallas).
Apissedant,
Thanks for posting that video. It is over 1 year old and it was my first time viewing it. I agree with Judy that it was very difficult watching.
The video only highlighted what McCain actually joked about. Has he ever apologized for making that statement? If Obama had said something like that, his candidacy would be dead!
Mike-not-in-Maryland
just for the record, I nearly majored in Biochem for my undergrad degree in 1978. the degree spanned the bio dept and the chem dept, there were requirements beyond just "biochemistry" and there was a thesis requirement.
I opted for the biology degree. But it was entirely possible to major in Biochem.
also, nursing is a four year degree (for an RN), and yes, nursing students can and do take a full year of organic chemistry.
have a nice day.
I haven't seen any references on DCW yet to this story (which surprises me, since this is the FIRST place I'd expect to hear it):
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/06/26/democrats_no_fried_food.html
Interesting how the author of the piece frames it as "alienating Southerners".
26...,
That's a silly article. Eating healthy food is now a giant swipe at southern people? If they deep fried chocolate they would all the sudden start winning southern states?
beryl,
The video is definitely worth the watch. I'm rather surprised someone like moveon.org hasn't stolen the video.
An honest article on the economy:

Thanks for your response and considerations.
The problem I have with certain types of liberals is that they don’t understand that there are consequences to their actions and lifestyle choices. They totally lack the personal responsibility gene. For example, I have previously discussed with you about supply and demand. You talked about how there is only a handful of doctors in the country who understand your particular medical condition. That you are lucky to live in Maryland where there are two doctors who do. Ophthalmologists are legion in Maryland, but only 2 of them can treat you. Yet you expect a non-ophthalmologist to know everything that is current about your eye condition. That is the degree of unrealistic expectations many Americans have.
Take the case of your boyfriend. Why did you try to obscure the diagnosis and state non-small cell carcinoma? Yes, you are technically correct, but I suspect that it was specifically squamous cell ca. Everybody would probably immediately recognize that this is a cancer caused by lifestyle choices – hence your attempt to obscure the fact.
Hillary is speaking on MSNBC. Obama is next to her.
Of course we won't be serving fried foods at the convention. Denver is 30 minutes from one of the health capitals of the US: Boulder. We don't fry anything in Boulder except our brains -- on MJ. That is the ONLY smoking allowed in our state.
apissedant,
Promise you will?
Even if you get real real mad.
Or REAL REAL REAL REAL MAD.

This guy must have acquired his sense of humor in the prison camp. I can't believe he is polling as well as he is with these terribly offensive jokes.
Jean,
I will attempt REAL REAL REAL REAL REAL hard not to reply to the bigoted, homophobic, ignoramuses that have polluted this thread with the fake credentials, who post fake information over and over and over again in the hope that it will become 'truth' from all the repetition, and insult every person with a political viewpoint to the left of the troglodyte reactionary facism of their own political philosophy.
It will be difficult, as I am of the belief that you confront falsehoods and lies, otherwise they will fester and spawn. However I will attempt to not reply to the non-thinking, selfish and ignorant trolls.
But please be easy on me if/when I slip!

One more word on the trolls:
When I was in college, the freshmen in the dorm I lived in were called Rines. The definition of a Rine was "lower than white whale s*** at the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean."
I consider some of the trolls on these pages to be lower than Rines.

mike in maryland,
I understand your viewpoint and I appreciate your effort.
Just to think about.
You have confronted and the result has been the other individuals are,to put it simply, stupid. They have some knowledge but choose not use it properly.
Take away the fuel "air" they will stop or dissapate.
Your effort is appreciated.
It is getting to the point everyone is tired of these yahoos;)
beryl,
You make a very good point. It is still hard to imagine that people are that ignorant and stupid.
Mike in Md,
You did very well at ignoring at least one comment that I found ridiculously offensive and completely out of line. I have to give you kudos for that.
NEW SUBJECT!
In reference to the polling.
I do not know why everyone is surprised.
Many, many, many people do not like change and it actually scares them.
That is the danger of the knee jerk reaction to fight it. Even if it is better.
The way to conversion has to be delicate.
jean
Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. This will be my final response to stop, because he has asked a couple valid questions and has made a couple of very STUPID, HOMOPHOBIC statements to Mike in Maryland and against gays in general. And when MY family, as do most people, is attacked, I WILL fight to the death to defend it.
"I don't think most Americans would allow you to use the word "marriage" if two males or females are united.
You call it civil union. But don't ever call it "marriage" which is solely reserved for a man and a woman, who can together in love procreate and perpetuate the human race, IMO.
Partners in civil union may be given whatever rights the States decide to provide them with. Fed should not get involved."
Oh so stupid one, that is why we have the courts, to protect the minority from the majority. If the courts were not used for this reason we would still have JANE clinics. Without them we would very possibly still have segregated schools.
Most of us don't care what it is called, Marriage or Civil Union, as long as ALL the EXACT SAME rights are extended to OUR families as our heterosexual counterparts on EVERY LEVEL of government.
The federal government should NOT be involved in marriage between heterosexual couples (ie tax breaks) either unless they are going to extend those same tax breaks to EVERY TAX PAYER in the nation, or not to anyone. Bill and I are tired of subsidizing with OUR tax dollars for people like you, who should be taken out of the gene pool, to have kids.
"I have a question to you and others: In 2008, will you call yourself openly Gay/Lesbian w/o any reservation, assume there is no scorn from the Society whatsoever?
My sense is many of you don't feel comfortable to use that term yourself. If others use, then you call them homophobes etc. There seems to be an inner demon in many of you who tells you that there is something inappropriate in your behavior/personality. Am I wrong, or what?"
To answer your question, I will take the 'or what' answer. You are a PATHETIC DOLT! I have been OPENLY GAY since 1992 and have been very vocal and proud. Much of that is because you cannot tell by just physically looking at me unless I'm with my partner which we are usually holding hands, no matter where we are.
Sorry to burst your bubble dolt, but I have NO inner demons. You seem to be the one with the inner demons. And your claim to have never to have come in contact with any gays in Dallas is likely to be VERY UNTRUE. You just didn't know of the ones that you have come in contact with. Dallas has a HUGE gay community, with gay bars and everything.
Many gays are not out in 2008 because of the ridicule they KNOW they will endure because of moronic, homophobic, pathetic dolts such as yourself who show hostility to those who are not "like" you.
Ok, I'm done responding to this guy - he is a serious whole ass. He's not just an asshole, he's the whole thing.
Just caught the end of the interview on MSNBC of the 'idiot' from PUMA (the anti-Obama website).
She is a real idiot saying that she endorsed Hillary and that she can't endorse Obama and that she will probably vote for McCain.
I think there are some of those folks out there with their own agenda but I think their numbers will dwindle as time goes on.
Obama '08
Leah,
thank you for the definition of PUMA.
I didn't want to sound stupid,
Don't go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but I had no idea what that meant.
When I go to an hateful site I just leave.
Leah,
ITA. She also said that she would not vote for Obama even if HRC was named #2.
Therefore, we should never try to win over these PUMA nuts by bowing and scraping for the Clintons. The same PUMA nuts may vote for a man who laughed when asked "what are you going to do about the Bitch". They are going to vote for a man who called his wife the "C" word in public.
PUMAs are crazy and should be ignored.
Dave,
lol, very appropriate final message. Dallas was almost the first major city in the country to have an openly gay mayor. He lost by 16 percent, which considering people like Stop, isn't all that bad really.
beryl,
Honestly, look at what you just wrote.
Without full support for Obama he will say what he wants to do but will not be able to accomplish it.
Do you want REAL change or want to stand on your high condemning horse
and say it should of been.
The big picture is very important.
Obama is trying to move forward.
Are you?
jean
PUMA's website is
http://blog.pumapac.org/
PUMA actually stands for:
Party Unity My A$$
A bunch of Hillary supporters went over there when Obama clinched the nomination. They are raising money to run ads against the 'democratic party'.
They are a bunch of VERY angry people that want revenge on the party and the DNC and the RBC (rules and bylaw committee).
At this point I don't think anyone could do anything to appease them.
They truly are a bunch of NUTS!
Also another pro-Hillary website www.Hillaryis44.com has gone crazy. They are another group that is angry and out to bash Obama.
I think Hillary is going to need to reach out to those websites/groups and try to get the anger level down or tell them that she rejects and denounces them :)
jean,
Beryl was referring to the PUMA people who say they will no vote for Obama under any circumstance. This person that was on MSNBC said she wouldn't even vote for Obama if Clinton was on the ticket. Therefore it once again proves that they were solely voting based on gender and not the policies of the candidates.
Beryl was saying that they are undermining themselves if they vote for a man who refers to women as "B's and C's" and makes jokes about wife beating.
Leah - I think Hillary is going to need to reach out to those websites/groups and try to get the anger level down or tell them that she rejects and denounces them :)
Now THAT would be classic - rejecting them. I wonder if they would be offended if she rejected and denounced them. Or if they would simply say "oh she had to say that".
Dave,
When you said "to protect the minority from the majority", you left out three very important words.
It should read "to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority".
We have some trolls on here who think they exemplify the majority, and if so, they are examples of why the courts are needed to protect us from their tyranny.
Mike
Independent Voter, try to ignore the "Homphobics". They are battling have their own internal issues. I am absolutely convinced that people who are the hardest on homosexuals have the same desires. Like the line in Hamlet, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."
I am a born-again Christian heterosexual and my beliefs coincide with those of Obama (as I've read them). It chaps my butt when people have problems with one behavior they think is morally or biblically wrong but wink at others. So you consider homosexuality a sin. What about adultery, fornication, coveting, lying, and PRIDE (the latter is listed in the Bible as an abomination)? Who has not done at least one of these? If you deny having done one of the above, you've just LIED.
We all are doing or have done something that someone considers a sin. God will sort it all out in the end because it is HIS job, and no one else's. Our job is to love in word and deed and treat people as you'd want to be treated.
Finally, sexual preference is none of anyone else's business. Those who want to be "out" should come "out". Others should stay "in". Regardless, everyone should have the same HUMAN rights.
OK, I'm done preaching for today.
Of course they are undermining themselves if they vote for McCain.
But for beryl to use the word NEVER?
I am sure HRC will address this fully.
She has started.
It is another beginning and people are still pissed off.
Just think how would you feel if Obama lost. It hasn't happened but you think you know how you would feel.
You really do not know how you would react.
I also do not think all these people are hillbilly's from West Virginia.
To have BOTH sides say never is not good.
The chances of Universal Health Care passing is going to be HARD.
Alot is going to be hard.
I know you do not like HRC but she is good, real good, at what she does.
Obama needs her.

Exactly what I was saying. The PUMA people are biting their own noses off to spite their faces.
Mike in MD, you are correct, thank you for the correction.
Hello Chemistry Professor who cannot recognize a simple monosaccharide even after another poster hinted about SWEET question and even mentioned its family: hexose. You did not even understand his reference to citric acid cycle when he dropped the ATP hint about disaccharides. I would have thought that you would be too embarrassed to post here ever again. You sit here and pontificate out of your ass knowing nothing about anything. Exactly what is your psychological malfunction?
beryl,
I think we posted at the same time.
Obama and HRC have been talking alot.
If the walls are not broke down there will be nothing.
The win in November will be great, but if people don't TRY to work together there will be no fruit from this labor.
There is no doubt that half the PUMA will change if directed by HRC AND given a open hand.

Honestly, I may have felt the same but I doubt I'd vote for someone who does not embrace my beliefs on the issues.
I find it ironic how this PUMA person was convinced by HRC that experience is so important in a candidate. Experience was not important to the Clintons 16 years ago when Bill had LESS experience and was younger than Barack.
IMO, the PUMA people are completely brainwashed and it is sad.
Jean, I understand about the semantics of the words always and never, all, etc. But I think what Beryl was getting at is that Obama shouldn't spend a lot of resources on trying to win these people over. Not necessarily "never".
I thought about it similar to some of the comments throughout the primary that were blown out of proportion, kind of like bitter-gate, etc. Meaning we shouldn't be looking too deep into parsing every word (unless of course we are talking about the opposition...LOL)
I do not believe in stereo-typing but this is kinda how it is out there right now...
I think that some of the Hillary supporters can be put into two different groups:
The first group are the folks that are disappointed but can STILL think rationally. They are the ones that truly love Hillary and wanted her to win because of how she stands on the issues or because of her gender or both. These folks are the ones that realize that Obama's platform is very close to Obama's and they know that McCain is the complete opposite and would be BAD for America. They will either vote Obama or stay home on election day.
The second group are the irrational fanatics. Like Harriet Christian. These folks are VERY angry and nothing will appease them other than Hillary being the nominee. Many of the pro-Hillary anti-Obama groups online are truly hoping that Obama will lose and that Hillary will run and win in 2012. Even on Hillary's own website - some of the PUMA members - have been posting to Hillary that they will NEVER vote for Obama and that they are backing McCain this year and that they are waiting for her in 2012.
I think the second group of Hillary supporters is not that big and it will dwindle out over time.
jean,
I feel you, but I don't know if you actually went to PUMA's website. They are still spreading terribly hate filled statements and lies, and promising to undermine the party and our country. We as Democrats all know what is like to be screwed out of an election. All of us remember 2000 and I'm willing to bet most if not all of us were upset about that fiasco. We still went to our jobs, we still did what was right, we at no point worked against our own country and our own interests out of spite. That is what these people are advocating. That is wholly inappropriate.
Dave and Leah,
Homosexuality effects no one but the two involved in it.
Murder, theft, vandalism, and many other things are considered morally reprehensible and are subject to legal penalties for doing these things. The reason for this is not just that most consider them morally wrong, but because other people are negatively effected by the act. These acts take advantage of someone else, and for that reason, we are able to project society's morality on others.
Many consider homosexuality morally wrong, but since it does not effect them, so what. Same with masturbation, promiscuity, smoking, eating pork, or a million other silly things that people for one reason or another decided were immoral. We should not impose our morality on any person unless there is a severe negative effect on others due to that person's actions. Being grossed out or feeling icky is not a severe negative effect.
LOL thanks p'd ant.....That isn't bad at all for an openly gay man in Dallas.
Independant,
There is no doubt that Obama will win in November.
The timing is right.
When HRC tried to get Universal Health Care through things were on the fat side with the economy.
Now things are slim for most.
There is enough Republicans still there and will be there to stop it.
Really simple, need these people.
jean
Mike,
A) I am not a Chemistry Professor, I am a Chemistry student.
B) CHEMISTRY, not BIOCHEMISTRY. They are two different subjects, and one formula does not only represent one thing. I suggest you go back to school troll.
C) You are officially on ignore. Have a nice life.
Beryl,
I will take issue with one phrase you used, and that is "sexual preference". The phrase should be 'sexual identity.'
I, and all gays and lesbians that I know, did not make a conscious decision to be homosexual. We all came to the realization of what our sexual identity is, some at a younger age than others. Saying "sexual preference" implies it was a conscience decision and a choice.
Other than that, on behalf of the gays and lesbians of the world, I say "Thank You!" for the kindness and thoughtfulness of your opinion.
(I would bet that the trolls who infest these discussions are wondering how we can have a civil discourse about a disagreement or misunderstanding. I blame it on their pre-reptilian brain. The only brain that they possess.)
Mike
Leah,
I agree. We need to focus on those who are not closed-minded. There are too many independent and Repub voters who are ready and willing to come aboard and help change the world.
HRC can help to move all of her supporters into the right direction and that is her job over the next few months. Her actions will help women to reach higher places in politics overall. She should not need to feed into the stereotype that we cannot fight, lose, and not be sore-losers.
A list of 18 different compounds with the previous formula.... I am sure there are more. All but 4 are compounds used in biochemistry, not chemistry. A person that claims to have majored in Chemistry should understand the difference between the two subjects.
Grrr.. Chris Matthews makes me mad sometimes when he says Obama has to 'start' doing this and that -- and these are things Obama has always done! Obama has spent a day working with a home heath giver doing her job, a day with a nurse, etc. He has given town halls in women centers, retirement homes, etc. and the older folks 'loved' him.
I just hate it when the talking heads on TV don't know what they are talking about because they haven't watched all of Obama's town halls and speeches!
The talking heads need to 'start' to do some research before they start yakking ;)
Roach:
I know you are very angry. Still I don't know why your nerves get crushed so much if I ask you a few simple questions.
You ask others plenty of questions! That's fine.
You want to get educated! That's good.

I am very surprised that you got rattled so much by such innocuous questions!
Although, I AM a fiscal conservative, I am socially a liberal.
I have NEVER said anything derogatory of Gays or Lesbians anytime. Show me a line that I offended you or MinM for your personal life style! I have been supportive of you Gays, if at all any.
Yes, I am dead against the FAR LEFT Liberal Ideologues who want Tax and Spend Big Govt.
In this site there is a Silent Majority, who visit often, but don't get involved. They know well that there is a Vocal Minority here who usurp the space and time and thrust their view on others so brutally.
IndiGay, maybe Dallas or Houston has "Gay Community", I AM not aware of it! They ARE not in my orbit. It doesn't mean anything!
Your virulent anger says that there IS a demon in you and MinM.
My question is WHY?
As long as you get angry and quickly defensive, people like me will think there is a BIOLOGICAL reason for your behavior!
Maybe you GAYS have hormonal imbalance in you. That can be medically assisted.
Maybe, you get angry because you can't propagate your gene pool, which is a biological reason for any species to exist in this planet!
On tax issues, I AM with you. As a "Civil Union" you should be given all benefits and privileges, IMO.
Be cool. You look very timid and weak.
Mike in Maryland,
Thank you for your correction. I'll use the phrase "sexual identity" going forward!
http://riodb01.ibase.aist.go.jp/sdbs/cgi-bin/direct_frame_top.cgi
Leah, I agree with you on your "stereotyping" post. I believe that Aunt Jean is in that first category. She is rational and will more than likely vote for Obama or stay home, she seems to have come around on that.
p'd ant - in your last post about homosexuality - I do have to correct one thing in that you said it only affects the two involved - this is provided it is consensual....which is true for both heterosexuals and homosexuals.
ok leah, Dave, Mike in Md, and beryl, sorry, really really done engaging insanity. Though I do find it odd that Stop and Mike showed up at the same time.
I know everyone has had fun talking about chemistry the past few days.. but can we try to keep the thread on topic now? :)
It's more interesting for us out here that don't know or care about chemistry to talk and read about politics ;)
UGH! LEAH!?!?!?!?!?!
I'm biting my tongue. I went back on my promise to you once and don't want to do it again.....grrrrrrrr!
Leah,
Done I promise! And again, it wasn't even Chemistry, it was Biochemistry, an entirely different major and area of study.

Bill, Hillary Clinton Contribute Maximum Amount to Obama
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/06/27/bill-hillary-clinton-contribute-maximum-amount-to-obama/
Every Democrat with the exception of the one in the hospital voted for it. 22 Republicans voted against it, McCain spoke out against it, and refused to show up for the vote. Both Hillary and Barack flew back to vote for it.
Some of the newest state polls are awesome!
Obama
New Jersey +16
Minnesota +17
California +28
Wisconsin +13
McCain has only a +5 point lead in Texas down from +16 in May -- I think in a couple more weeks Texas will be leaning Obama!
Leah,
I would like to follow your wishful thinking, but I'm afraid Texas will eventually drift back the other way a bit.
leah, what a dirtbag McCain is. It will be interesting to see if MSM picks up on it.
The one cool thing about the recent polls, is that many of them were REPUBLICAN POLLS, meaning they cannot claim a liberal bias. You'd think they would have burned the poll results and refused to release them.
I took a look at the Republicans up for re-election this year, and how they voted for or against the GI Bill.
Three voted 'Nay':
Sessions (AL)
McConnell (KY)
Cochran (MS)
All three have large leads in the polls against the Democratic Party challenger.
Ten voted 'Yea'
Stevens (AK)
Roberts (KS)
Collins (ME)
Coleman (MN)
Wicker (MS)
Sununu (NH)
Dole (NC)
Inhofe (OK)
Smith (OR)
Cornyn (TX)
Roberts is not in a tight race, and Cornyn's race doesn't appear to be that close right now (but I think will get tighter). There are a lot of military bases and veterans in their states, however.
All the other Republicans are in relatively tight to VERY tight races right now.
I wonder. Is there some correlation of how they voted on this bill to the polls on their reelection chances?
Mike
Isn't Smith the one advertising his alignment and bipartisan work with Senator Obama?
When did the Washington Post become a Republican rag? Why are they printing a terribly retarded and out of context article that is also printed verbatim in dozens of other periodicals and written by a contributor to the National Review? If the article was at least exclusive, I could almost understand it, but when they are just blatantly reprinting garbage? Not cool.

You got it.
His ad shows the Obama for President web site where his (Smith's) support for the higher fuel mileage requirement is acknowledged and documented by Senator Obama.
The latest Pollster.com running average of the polls shows the Oregon Senatorial race has Smith at 43.2%, Merkley at 39.6% and Frohnmyer at 11%. The Pollster.com running average of polls in Oregon for President shows Senator Obama at 47.6%, McSame at 40.5%.
Any wonder why Smith is trying to cozy up to Senator Obama?
Mike
Mike in Md,
I just wish we could get rid of the actual nut jobs in Senate, instead of continually taking out the moderate Republicans. We took out George Allen in 2006, but most of our wins were over moderates like Dewine and Chafee, Republicans that were actually decent legislators.
"These folks are the ones that realize that Obama's platform is very close to Obama's"
I believe you meant "Obama's platform is very close to Hillary's"!
If it is, then I disagree, because
1. Saving SS Fund by lifting the income cap is NOT Hillary's.
2. She knows what it takes to bring Universal Health Care - only when ALL are included in the pool to bring down the risk, as a consequence of it to bring down the cost. Obama does NOT understand this very basic mechanics of managing the risk and cost. By allowing healthcare as "voluntary", HE is going to sit in the back pockets of Insurance Co and Hospitals.
3. He thinks Big Govt is the solution. She does NOT think that way. She wants to bring "small efficient transparent Govt" similar to the one of Bill Clinton. For her fiscal sanity and responsibility is the hallmark of governing. Bill and Hillary follow "Triangulation Philosophy" in policies: don't go to the Far Left, nor to the Far Right - a moderate centrist approach, because that's where most of the American voters are. These voters hire a CEO cum Commander-In-Chief to run the Country.
Saying that Obama and Hillary are one and the same is just ignoring the fundamental philosophy of their public policies and orientations.
Obama is Far Left and Hillary is a Centrist, as I have been writing for a long time.
He can move to the Center, and get elected as in 1992 and 1996. Or he can remain in the Far Left and get rejected as in 1980, 1984, 1988, 2004!
You make the choice.
Stay tuned.
p'd ant - agreed 100%. I really liked Chafee.
In the summer of 2007, Chafee officially left the Republican Party, changing his affiliation to independent. He said that he did so because of the Republicans' increasing conservatism, and particularly cited spending cuts in programs which assisted the middle- and low-income people, such as Pell Grants and Head Start.[18] In February 2008 he said he was considering voting for Barack Obama in the Democratic presidential primary.[19] On February 14, with the Rhode Island Democratic primary approaching in three weeks, Chafee officially endorsed Obama.[20]
p'd ant - I was advocating for him to at least be on Obama's short list of VEEPS earlier in the season.
As of today, Gallup poll shows a strong TIE at 44% to both McCain and Obama.
But, 84% Americans said that they want the Candidates improve the economy, and NOT redistributing the wealth.
Who is interested in redistribution of wealth?
Far Left Obama, who wants to use the powerful hands of Govt to do the income/wealth redistribution.
This shows up in the AOL Straw Poll! McCain gets 61%! No wonder to me.
If McCain maintains a strong TIE against the MegaMoney of BHO by July 4th, then he is going to be just fine in Nov.
Centrist Candidate will prevail, because that's where most of Americans are!
Stay tuned.

Dave,
Yeah, I remember that, and I really like him too. I still think he should have a slightly more seasoned VP though. I definitely wouldn't mind him back in politics somehow though. They're saying he might run for Governor in 2010.
Of course, daily national tracking polls don't mean squat in late June, nor in early November.
The important polls are those taken in each of the 50 states and in DC on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
The tracking polls in EACH state give an indication of how the Electoral College will shake out, and the polls indicate that Senator Obama has a considerable lead in that count at this time.
Mike
New CNN poll...
(CNN) — Barack Obama holds a 5-point lead over John McCain in the latest CNN "Poll of Polls"
Some Random Thought on the WEEK:
1. North Korea blew up its Nuclear Facility. Good for Dubya and Rice.
2. Economy and the Capital Markets are melting. Oil hit $140 per bl.
Interestingly, McCain is on the whole, leading in my poll of polls!
When Dubya is 26%, Pelosi/Reid is 12%.
Americans say Republicans are at fault, and NOT McCain, he is NOT McSame, NOT McBush!!
3. Bill Gates resigned from MS as the Real Chief. What a life! He and Steve Jobs revolutionized the entire world economy. Good for America. He is going to be the Chairman of his Mega Charity with 50 Billion Dollars! This is the First in the World, again.
What would be the Next Big Thing from America to the World?
Yes, Google, EBay.
But, we need something MUCH MUCH Bigger.
We THINK and ACT Bigger than Life for the betterment of the entire World.
We MUST lead the world, as always.
McCain = WAR = Bad Economy = Bush = 4 more years of the same = BAD for America!!!

I have to feel that way because there always has to be hope.
The comments on being gay is, I don't know how to describe it.
I grew up with a bestfriend whose parents were lesbians and they adopted. Yes I will say that was 30years ago.
One of my best friends, who was gay, when I got married got frustrated and said to give my credit card to him so he could plan it correctly. Lot's of born agains on Husband's side and mine and it worked out wonderfully.
There is a chance they knew that inappropriate behavior on the family part would not be tolerated.
Everyone had a great time.
My husband has been in the entertainment business for over 30 years and yes we know a lot of people that are gay.So.
Great partys:)
I am just amazed at such ignorance and the homophobics on this site.

Why in the heck are they on this site.

the expressed purpose of propagating the species
That would mean that post-menopausal women can't get remarried?
the expressed purpose of propagating the species
I guess some parties to the conversation wouldn't mind if a person stood up in church and objected to the marriage if the couple hasn't definitively proven that they can conceive?
the expressed purpose of propagating the species
Sounds like a facetious argument to make it appear that only gay and lesbian marriages are the only ones that cannot produce progeny.
Mike
I respect HRC for not worrying about getting reimbursed for the money SHE lent to the campaign. That was a very good move.
Something just occurred to me. HRC debt to her vendors would be paid off if every one of her 18 million supporters donates $1 to her campaign. They should do this because they encouraged and even pushed her to go into debt in the first place.

McCain calls Carter a 'lousy president'
---
Shame on you John McCain!
America must do everything we can to prevent McCain from getting into the White House. McCain should know better than disrespecting a former president of the United States of America.
Also Carter was a navy man and navy folks are not supposed to bash each other!
SHAME ON YOU JOHN McCain!!!

I am not a perfect person. I do slip every now and again ;)
Latest poll in Indiana (a state the Shrub won by 13% in 2000, and almost 21% in 2004):
SurveyUSA (6/21-23/08) (and coincidentally Pollster.com poll of polls result):
McSame - 47%
Senator Obama - 48%
Pollster.com poll of polls for North Carolina (a state the Shrub won by 13% in 2000, and more than 12% in 2004):
McSame - 44.6
Senator Obama - 41.4
As I've said before, the only poll that matters is when the ballots are cast in November, and it's the 51 distinct and separate polls that matter. But if McSame has to defend states where Shrub didn't even have to make a campaign appearance to win, he's in TROUBLE.
Mike
I agree, Leah.
Carter's behavior once out of the WH demonstrated that he cares more about the people he served than the power he held as the Commander in Chief.
He should be respected on many levels.
"Carter's behavior once out of the WH demonstrated that he cares more about the people"
Very interesting, and very telling.
Yes, his "behavior once out of the WH" was exemplary. But Jewish people will disagree even with that Statement because of his Book "Apartheid in the Occupied Land".
The key point here is what did he do when he was "in the WH"?
Most Americans felt he was a disaster!
Now, BHO wants to emulate Carter.
Hence, his Carter II, IMO.
McCain wants to paste a label of Carter on BHO's forehead. A Good Ploy.

Human Cloning and Lesbian Marriage:
If human cloning is legal, then there may come a point that Lesbians can bear their own children. By my definition, they can be "married" legally and logically.
For the novice, this is the Human Cloning Procedure (after Dolly, the Sheep):
1. Women Partners need to decide whose "clone" they prefer, first.
Say Partner A wants her clone. She will be the donor of the "Nucleus".
From her breast, cells can be removed and cultured, and her intact nucleus can be safely but gently removed.
2. Partner B provides her Egg and the uterus. Her egg can be removed and its nucleus removed and discarded. But the remaining cell is kept alive and active.
3. To this nucleus-less cell, Partner A's nucleus is injected. Now this cell has the cytoplasm from Partner B and nucleus from Partner A. This would give chromosomal 2n (46 chromosomes). Now the cell will be "activated" and implanted in the uterus of Partner B. When the activation is good, the cell will divide and the embryo will grow in the uterus of the Partner B.
4. If everything goes well, a healthy female clone of Partner A will be born in about 9 months.
Voila.. Lesbian couple can have one of their clones done.
5. The roles can be reversed, and Partner B can be cloned the same way.
Voila.. Lesbian couple can have their clone daughters.
It is doable and biologically possible. Technology needs to be perfected by the R&D of Fertility Clinics in US or elsewhere.
What would be the behavioral attributes of the clones?
I believe it would be nearly identical of the donor of nucleus.
I will vote for Human Cloning, and Lesbian Marriage.
Just a thought.
Stay tuned.
There was nothing Carter could have done. That was one of the worst times to be President in history. He did not do well in the WH, but who could have? Here are two articles about Jimmy Carter. The first one also bashes McCain for being late to the table, and two faced with his statements.

ap,
It's hard to know what Chafee should do. RI politics is so incredibly corrupt. The Democratic party, as you may know, overwhelmingly controls the legislature, and there is hardly an honest person in there.
Taxpayers are being ruined because the partnership of the crooked legislators and union types have set up stuff like very early retirement and incredibly generous retirement benefits for state workers. And there are many state workers, something like 1 in 5 or 6 jobs in the state.
I say all this as a Democrat. So, currently there is a Repub Governor, but his opposition to stuff just gets overridden, and he has some traditional Repub values that are not great.
I think it would be a waste of Chafee to have him as Governor.
What we really need to do is clean house with the legislature, but the bums keep getting re-elected. The only hope I see is that some of them actually are winding up in jail.
Would that we had a citizens initiative petition right, but we don't.
karen anne,
I'm not that aware of RI state politics, but I've seen a decent amount of state legislators in Michigan and Virginia. I don't see many of either that are worth a hill of crap. No one goes out to vote for these people, or really knows anything about them for the election. Here in Virginia, it is only a 2 month job that pays 20k, so it is rather hard to get anyone to actually want the job in the first place. My local delegate is an alcoholic that Tim Kaine's transportation town hall meeting half an hour later, griping and complaining very loudly, with all the local TV cameras surrounding the Governor and trying to listen to what he said.
As much as people complain about our federal government and the inefficiency and stupidity of it, local and state governments seem way worse.
"I might pay to see that!"

A Proposition to Ban is coming to the ballot in CA.

By hindsight 20/20 on Carter:
1. Carter should have sensed the coming of the Islamic Revolution in Iran well in advance.
2. He should not have been that close and friendly with the brutal Shah of Iran.
3. He should have appointed Volcker early on to curb the domestic inflation.
4. He spent more time in micromanaging the WH rather than seeing the bigger picture of his
Presidency.
He was a terrible lousy President. But he realized it soon after his exit, and started building a name outside the WH.
Egypt & Israel Peace was his lasting achievement, though. (Clinton worked his level best to achieve one between Palestinians and Israel. But it just didn't happen.) Carter was just lucky!
Obama Abroad
June 27, 2008 9:40 PM
ABC News has learned that in mid-July, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, will travel to Iraq, Afghanistan, the UK, France and Germany.
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee visited Iraq once before, in 2006. He will be visiting Iraq and Afghanistan along with a congressional delegation.
He will follow the trip to those two war-torn countries with a separate European sojourn.

SS,
It was Congress that had to act. Wonder if some of Bush's aides (or rather Darth Cheney himself) recommended that the bill be vetoed?
Interesting that 10 years ago, when Nelson Mandela was President of South Africa, Congress couldn't bring itself to pass such a resolution.
Oh yeah, Congress was controlled by the Reptilians at the time. No wonder the resolution wasn't passed then.

There's some good info in one of the first comments about McCain's civil rights record especially in regard to women-

This is one of many issues besides the obvious for me, cheating on his first wife and calling Ms. Cindy a couple of choice names. My husband has too much respect for himself and me to speak that way to me.(if he knows what's good for him)

Non-political question- since you put it on our profile. Your favorite movie- "Angels in the Outfield" Is that the 1950's version or 1990's version?
Re ANC: It was just last month I heard about two people who were on terrorist watch lists 1) Nelson Mandela because of ANC and 2) Some sky marshal who had some unfortunate name mix-up so he couldn't board to protect the passengers!!
Here we have another example of why the phrase 'military intelligence' is oxymoronic:

Leah posted
"Obama asked for ID at gym"
I loved the woman's final comment. I'd love to have seen the look on Obama's face before and after she made the “Sorry, Mr. Future President!” comment.
I am amazed at the arguments made by people who don't understand our system of government. "Carter should have appointed Volker earlier."
The Chair of the Federal Reserve Board serves a four year term by statute. While the Chair is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, it is considered to be an independent position rather than part of the executive branch. In other words, the new President does not get to appoint a new chair until the old chair's term expires. As such, Carter did not have the authority to appoint Volker until the previous chair's term expired.
Blaming Carter for the ineptitude of the chair appointed by Ford is like blaming the life guard at the beach for the tide rising.
ss - sorry that should have read "it wasn't a videotaped interview...."
mike in md,
Well most of my service was post 9/11, and the job I had was known for people not liking it and trying to get out anyway possible. Many people who were not gay attempted to violate don't ask don't tell in order to get kicked out. Some got their spouses refer them as alcoholics to the command, and then fail the 28 day program. If all of these attempts failed, a few went UA for 30 days or more, did drugs, or attempted suicide.
The gay one is easiest because the discharge is typically honorable, and no civilian company can refuse to hire you for homosexuality. The alcohol one is honorable as long as you don't get in any trouble, but then your DD-214 says that you're an alcoholic on it. Rather annoying for future job interviews. The others may very well end in OTH discharges, so it is best to avoid those ones.
i v-no problemo
p'd ant - as a general rule however is that they require 'proof' as to ones "gayness". What I found funny in the video that mike posted is he and his partner were kissing pretty intensely and that apparently wasn't evidence enough 2 years ago during their initial investigation, but now it is?
Well rumor had it on my ship, that a man actually drove to Vermont to get "married" (enter into a civil union) to another man in order to prove he was gay. He wasn't. You would be surprised how much some of the people hate the military and their jobs.
(It is a rumor because the guy was from my department, but he got discharged about 3 months before I showed up on the ship, so I never met him.)
Prior to DADT military wording:
Homosexuality is incompatible with military service. The presence in the military environment of persons who engage in homosexual conduct or who, by their statements, demonstrate a propensity to engage in homosexual conduct, seriously impairs the accomplishment of the military mission. The presence of such members adversely affects the ability of the armed forces to maintain discipline, good order, and morale; to foster mutual trust and confidence among service members; to insure the integrity of the system of rank and command; to facilitate assignment and worldwide deployment of service members who frequently must live and work in close conditions affording minimal privacy; to recruit and retain members of the armed forces; to maintain the public acceptability of military service; and to prevent breaches of security.
What does, "prevent breaches of security" mean?
Can gays not hold up to interrogation or something? The rest are ridiculous and silly, but I can see the twisted logic. I don't even think they faked logic with that part.
apissedant said...

Sorry to say, but in one half the states is IS legal to not hire, or to fire, a person because they are a homosexual. In only 25 states (plus DC) are there laws on the books prohibiting a company from firing a person because they are gay or lesbian. For employment by an agency of the state government, 32 states have protections, but usually those are executive orders signed by the governor, and can be changed at any time when a new governor is sworn in.
Lambda Legal has the details for each state at:

What does, "prevent breaches of security" mean?
In the twisted minds of the military brass who wrote those regulations, a homosexual member of the armed forces would be more susceptible to being blackmailed for being gay than any other member for just about any other reason. If they were susceptible to being blackmailed, then they could be turned into a spy very easily, or at least 'forced' into giving information to 'the enemy' (think Soviet Russia).
Again, 'military intelligence' is very oxymoronic.
Mike
m in md-Are you sure these 25 states plus DC aren't just expanding on the basic federal anti-discrimination laws?
soft,
That's what I would have thought, but not according to the weblink he provided. Very disturbing, worse than I thought. It is always a sad day when I learn my nation is more bigoted than I actually thought, considering my initial perception was not too great to begin with.
http://www.lawmemo.com/101/2006/02/discrimination_1.html
Another link stipulating that homosexuals are essentially considered inferior and open to discrimination in our nation.
Can you tell me something positive about my country and or state too?
There is a rule in education classes, that when you tell a student something bad, you must first open with a positive.
