AP - There are significant differences between prepubescent and postpubescent human beings which go far beyond the strength and speed you cite. As an educator, I have a lot of experience viewing these changes, which include changes in the ability to process emotions, evaluate risks, and appreciate the consequences of their actions. These changes are traced in scientific literature to specific changes in brain structure and brain chemistry which usually occur between the ages of 14 and 16.

Ultimately, I do not think it is appropriate to subject prepubescent girls to the pressures and strains of Olympic competition; nor, anticipating your objections, do I think they have the judgment and maturity to make the decision for themselves. Nor do their parents or countries, who far too often have financial and political interests in their children's performance, have the impartiality to make that decision for them.

apissedant said...

rich,
You anticipated the wrong objection. I am not arguing that children are mature... I'm arguing they are doing the exact same thing anyways, and that we have never prevented them from competing before.

These same kids are on national tours competing in the exact same events. We have 4 year olds competing in beauty pageants. We have the Little League World Series, which is 11 and 12 year olds.

I find the place where we have drawn the line trivial and pointless. We're allowing these same kids to compete in the exact same events everywhere except for the one place they want to compete most.

We're allowing other kids to compete on a national and often international stage at much younger ages. What's the difference?

Just to jump in real quick on the "age requirements" again. Rich, the 16 year old age limit is not across the board. The current age requirement for diving is 14 years of age (http://www.nbcolympics.com/diving/insidethissport/qualifications/newsid=103331.html#qualifying) by December 31, 2008. So a 13 year old may dive in the Olympics as long as they turn 14 by the end of the year. This is another reason the divers from China are so much better than our (well besides the fact they are taken from their homes at the age of 4 and sent to a concentration camp to do nothing but train.)

My pick is Chet Edwards at 3:00 PM today.

apissedant said...

Dave,
Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. I didn't look that hard, but I couldn't find information one way or the other on age requirements with the exception of gymnastics. I only new the soccer stuff because that's the only olympic event I actually follow.

Richard said...

AP - First of all, I reject your "everybody's doing it anyway" argument and will not dignify it with a reference to the Brooklyn Bridge. Secondly, there is a qualitative difference between the pressures of the World Championship and Olympics and other gymnastic competitions. Thirdly, while the IOC can't make people stop exploiting their children, they can remove one small element of the motivation to do so. I think that is worthwhile.

tmess2 said...

On the age requirement thing, that is not an IOC rule. That is a rule of the governing sports federation.

For soccer/football, there is no age rule for women because FIFA thinks having the full national team at the Olympics is needed to promote the sport. They have the age limit for men because they want the World Cup to be the main title for national teams in men's soccer. (The olympic age limit is higher than the age limit for the two main junior championships -- 17 and 21 respectively).

Richard said...

I apologize; I was incorrect. Each sport's governing body is allowed to set its own age requirements. Since this is so, the IFG gets to decide. I still support their decision for the reasons I gave above.

apissedant said...

rich,
Everyone is doing it anyway, and no harm has come of it for the past 2000+ years. It isn't like we're lining the kids up to snort coke. Why is diving less strenuous on the emotions of the children than gymnastics?

Do you really believe there is less stress placed on the baseball playing children than on the gymnasts? Where is the most money to be made? How much does the highest paid gymnast make verses the highest paid baseball player?

That isn't even comparable. To say that the Little League World Championship is less stressful than the olympics is laughable at best.

Everyone is all pissed because America lost and China won. All the Americans that have been caught using steroids in the olympics didn't gain this much attention.

I will not dignify your, "the rules are the rules because they're the rules" argument with a reference to slavery or segregation.

I think that not one, but several VP candidates, will ALL travel to Illinois tomorrow, and then the presentation will wind up being a display of unity with, several almost-ran's smiling and looking on.

LEAH: go ahead and change mine to "overnight tonight", whatever timeframe that winds up being. Say, 3 am Saturday. Because that makes it more of a surprise. No point announcing it to us all today, and then flying everyone to Illinois to throw everyone into a tizzy, unless you are delaying the "first" announcement till morning. And you know that CNN will report that announcement as soon as their text messages come in.

it's like Christmas.

Richard said...

I would like to add that I object to putting prepubescent girls' bodies on display for our viewing pleasure. True, I have problems with putting women's bodies on display for our viewing pleasure regardless of age, especially when it is carried out in the name of sport. Personally, I would prefer that women's gymnastics be modified to bring its requirements more in line with those of men's gymnastics. Be that as it may, I think a minimum age of 16, however arbitrary, is a minimum gesture toward protecting young women from exploitation.

I will no longer be responding to anything you say on this topic, AP, but feel free to respond if you want. I am satisfied that I have had my say and have no desire to continue what seems to me at this point to me a pointless argument in this forum.

Vicki in Seattle said...

and then it would be a "3 am phone call"

apissedant said...

I find beauty pageants much more objectionable than gymnastics. Showing athletic prowess is not objectifying women, but slapping on three inches of makeup on a 4 year old, and then having them parade down a stage in a two piece bikini is despicable.

On that note, what respectable sport has a skirt in the uniform requirements? Maybe we should take a look at women's field hockey.

apissedant said...

vicki,
Flying a large number of candidates is the only way I could see a Saturday notification. I don't know how the media would respond to that though. It might be viewed as a giant and useless publicity stunt and get negative media attention.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Hahahaha!

CNN has two live streams running - one for the outside of Biden's house and one at Bayh's house - the Bayh stream is just the camera focusing on the bottom of the garage door waiting for it to open!

This is getting pretty ridiculous! :)

Richard said...

Leah, I honestly don't know. AP's points about transportation logistics are good, especially with reporters camped out in front of every short-lister's house. But there is one situation in which this would not matter: if Obama is going to choose someone not thought to be on the short-short list and who will travel in secrecy, perhaps on a chartered flight. Therefore, I will say: 30 minutes before the scheduled start of Saturday's rally.

UUbuntu said...

Looks like my time passed too, and since I hadn't given 2nd/3rd choices, I'll give them now.

The 3:00 AM phone call line is cute (but it might not be so cute at 3AM).

I pick Chet Edwards mainly because nobody else here has.

As far as picks I would like, I go with Gore (who has no shot) or Clark (who is a long shot).

As far as picks I think are likely, I like Biden more than the others, but they all are good. Even Clinton.

Heck, I'll vote for Obama in November no matter whom he picks as VP, though if he picks Dick Cheney, I may have to think twice before pulling the lever.

So, a revised selection is

Chet Edwards (Gore/Clark/Biden), sometime today. 5:00 PM perhaps?

Richard said...

Well, AP, I will offer one possible scenario: Sam Nunn, overseas on a junket, boards a red-eye for Chicago overnight. Obama sends a car to pick him up at O'Hare and spirit him to a hotel room rented by Obama staffers. He breakfasts in his room, then takes another private car to Springfield and arrives 15 minutes before the rally.

The same could probably work for Chet Edwards and maybe even Bill Richardson, substituting a chartered flight to avoid ticketing leaks.

One final possibility: Obama's staffers erect a backdrop that will double as a projection screen and Obama's running mate appears via satellite or even pre-recorded message.

Leah, it's my understanding that Springfield's airport only has regular service to Chicago O'Hare and St. Luis. There are two United Express flights from O'Hare tomorrow morning, but I don't think any candidate is going to be able to make a connecting flight without a layover in Chicago.

Of course, if it's a chartered flight...

Richard said...

Jean, I liked the comment. So if I understand you, the equipment one would need to do an outdoor sattelite appearance would have to have been arranged well in advance, but you have no knowledge that it was?

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Well it will probably be a charted flight and also the secret service will be with the VP pick immediately following the announcement.

Richard said...

If it's a chartered flight, then there is no reason it couldn't fly directly into SPI, of course. But if Obama wants to keep it secret until just before the rally it would not make much sense to have the nominee fly directly into Springfield, which will undoubtedly be staked-out.

In any case, that doesn't change my belief that all but the most-watched candidates might be able to travel to Springfield in secrecy.

Anyone watch McCain's new ad?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHoUUEkQjTk

It opens with - I kid you not - "Celebrities don't have to worry about family budgets, but we do."

I have a video counter ad --

Take the first 13 seconds of the ad, and then point out that some people who worry about family budgets are the ones whose family needed food stamps to eat, not the ones who don't know how many houses they own.

Somehow the irony of that commercial would be funny if this election weren't so close.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

I'll be glad when the Olympics are over and MSNBC gets back to normal. I have Fox on and they are fixin' to have Hillary supporters on that say they are 'ready to pounce' if Hillary is not the VP!

Mug said...

Hey everyone, I took a break for awhile but I'm back. I did have something to comment about the age restriction on women's gymnastics. The main reason for it is that women's gymnastics training can be very damaging to the bodies of these young women and for a gymnast to peek at age 13, they must begin training at about age eight. Before the age restriction, gold medals were going to mostly 13 or 14 year old girls such as Nadia Comaneci. The gymnastics careers of those young ladies ended at around age 15 or 16 as a direct result of training at a very young age. The age restriction is designed to protect the physical wellbeing of the gymnasts themselves. Some countries however, don't really care about their own people as much as they care about Olympic gold.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Please don't get it twisted. PUMA was started by a McCain supporter, not a HRC supporter. They are being USED by the Repugnican Party.

If Obama wins, we still have the Repugnicans to blame. Their greedy corporatist base is working their devious plan:

1. Appeal to the HRC supporters.

2. Appeal to the racists in denial.

3. Appeal to the evangelicals who only care about 2 issues -- abortion and homosexuality.

I'm hoping that the Clintons really make a difference by appealing to #1 & #2 next week.

Well, not meaning to play devil's advocate but Obama is in favor of bringing back the draft. He said so one year before he announce he was running for president. However, he would not do so during a war. "You fix the roof when the sun is shining, not during a storm." I agree with him 100% because he said that if there was a draft, the common people would pay much closer attention to what those in Washington DC do. If there had been a draft six years ago, we would not be in Iraq right now.

At this point 80 minutes until the start of the evening news and 170 minutes until the start of prime time.

I could see Obama announcing right at the start of the evening news or right at the start of prime time. With the Olympic coverage being playing tape for the first hour of prime time, NBC wouldn't miss any major coverage if they had to do a special report at the start of prime time. Once you get past that, my hunch is that it will be right before the Springfield event.

LOL Vicki. So how is Biden going to sneak out? Do you think he has a way out the back?

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Well if is Biden - Obama picked someone that really does have experience. Looks like Obama does have good judgment.

If it is Biden, and this is the plane that is picking him up... then I think it is a mistake. The text should have gone out before the plane.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Maybe the plane is just going to go around and pick up a bunch of people and take them to the rally tomorrow... wonder if any other planes have been dispatched.

Mike in Maryland said...

It is a private jet.

How many corporations are HQed in the northern part of Delaware? Corporations big enough, with top officers rich enough, to charter a jet? How many would have research projects going on to require rapid travel? How many of these corporations would have people who would have a need or want to charter a jet to Chicago, New York, the West Coast?

The speculation is getting crazier and crazier by the minute. For all we know, it could be a jet that is part of the federal witness protection program. Not likely, but it could be.

AP says Kaine is out, Obama VP text to come Saturday morning
Posted: 09:23 PM ET

The Associated Press reported Friday, sourcing a Democratic official, that Virginia Gov. Kaine says he will not be Barack Obama's running mate.

AP also reported late Friday that officials said the text message announcing Obama's VP would be distributed Saturday morning, a few hours before a scheduled rally at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, where the Democratic ticket would appear for the first time.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

I still think false leaks are coming out.

I won't believe anything until we hear it from Obama.

Richard said...

AP - I agree. The way they were building it up and promising to tell us first, I didn't expect to read it first here. He should have sent it out this afternoon at the latest.

On the other hand, it is possible that they didn't really have much choice and that, whenever they did it, the Secret Service was going to know first and it was bound to get out.

How soon after they were informed do you think Dick Cheney knew?

Independent Voter said...

p'd ant - you have to remember that it has been pure speculation on the media's part ever since the Georgia/Russia fiasco. It's was nothing the campaign did. The campaign did a great job of keeping it under wraps. But Andrea Mitchell started all this crap last week, especially since the Georgian President called and requested Biden to go meet with other foreign leaders.

Like I said before "GET OVER IT!"

rich - Dick Cheney knew immediately! Because the Secret Service is triggered by the executive branch. And well you know Bush is always on vacation (well that's not true, he just does less damage when he's on vacation.)

Independent Voter said...

AJ, I think that most of us can agree that CNN sucks, but almost all of the cable "news" companies are garbage. This is primarily due to the deregulation of the media and allowed corporate consolidation to take place.

In the mean time he can not do anything. No running, playing, getting angry, excited, or anything else. He's an active little boy. It's going to be very hard on his mother more so because she also has 3 other boys 3, 5 and a 10 year old. AJ

Yes, the campaign kept the secret, but they should have found a way to prevent the secret service from busting up the news. I think the 47 reporters outside would have protected him just fine until the secret service showed up. ;)

Didn't John McCain refuse Secret Service for quite awhile?

I just don't think he needed protection from the minute it was/is announced.

I still say if he had announced it in the middle of one of his events this week it would have been fine. Everyone was trained on him, everyone inside was probably on the text list... you'd here a giant mass churp/vibration and he'd tell everyone to check their phones. =)

I wonder if the news crews have staked out the train staion in Wilmington. It is one of the busier stations on Antrak's NorthEast Corridor.

Wilmington is 6 miles from the New Castle County Airport. There are several northbound and southbound trains that stop at that station every hour. It wouldn't be that difficult for someone to hop on the train in DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, Boston, etc., and get off in Wilmington.

I say this IF the charter jet is in Delaware to take the VP candidate from New Castle to Illinois. Be a good way to throw all the reporters completely off.

apissedant said...

By the way Mike, I believe I may finally be done with Maryland's Comptroller on Monday. It took a year, but I think they're finally going to stop trying to charge me 3200 dollars in extra taxes. I spent 8 months sending them documents and got it down to 350, and then the last 4 getting rid of that.

The latest dispute involved rental losses on my Virginia home while I was in Maryland. The woman on the phone actually asked me to prove that I didn't rent out the home while I lived in Virginia... in the home, otherwise she couldn't attribute the losses to Maryland income because I could have incurred them while renting the home while I resided in Virginia.

I lost my cool. I yelled at her for a few minutes, explained that I had sent her all the rental paperwork, and there was absolutely no way for me to show documentation that I DIDN'T rent out the home. It is not possible to prove a negative. She called back two hours later and said she would attribute the loss to Maryland and get back to me on Monday.

I hate your state.

P.S. - If you meant Boobie, he's a Club for Growth-type Repig, and if Senator Obama even thought of choosing him, I'd seriously consider NOT voting for Obama in November. I'd place him in the same category as Agnew, Quayle and Cheney.

The McCain campaign was quick to ridicule the choice. "There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden," said his spokesman, Ben Borritt. "Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing -- that Barack Obama is not ready to be president."

As everyone here knows, the McLame(brain) campaign has been pushing the 'John McCain is not an arugula-eating, pointy-headed-professor type' meme, as if someone who eats arugula is a [horrors!] Commie.

The Washington Post has an article on arugula. If Senator Obama wants to play this card, he could incorporate eating arugula into a discussion of healthy eating.

He also could play up McLame(brain) slurring Italians. After all, eruca sativa is an ingredient in a lot of Mediterranean dishes.

From that article:

Republican campaign strategist Mike Murphy wrote in Time magazine that working-class voters are suspicious of Obama, whom they see as one of the over-educated executive-types who are constantly downsizing the workforce: "Deep down, they think he'd rather hit the executive gym for a cardio workout during lunch hour than share a cheesesteak and beer with the hourly workforce." In this formulation, simply being health-conscious separates a candidate from the common citizen.

Why do people confuse education with wealth?
Why does it refer to professors as a bad thing?
