What is McCain's latest "senior moment", what does Obama need to do to win in November or whatever else is on your mind.
And please be excellent to one another. We do not accept name calling or any attacks on our commenters. Any objectionable comments will be deleted. Try to be civil.

Since when is being correct embarrassing? Why wasn't anyone embarrassed after they correctly guessed Joe Biden was the democratic VP nominee? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH OUR NATION!?!?!? I am infuriated with the rampant ignorance destroying the nation I love.
Olberman and Matthews only lost the anchor chair for the debates and election. They both will be there as analysts and therefore will be even more free to speak their minds ;)
Btw, Olberman will have Countdown before the debates and an extra hour following the debates - I love it!
I really dislike David Gregory and I hope tons of other people to too and will email MSNBC and tell them to get rid of David Gregory!
In a more rational and better written article, NYT's reports:
“Today’s necessary but likely very expensive action for taxpayers is the consequence of regulatory neglect and of a broader political system’s reluctance to take on what should have been clearly seen as festering problems,” said Lawrence H. Summers, who as Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton had warned of mounting problems at the companies.
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have fallen, and the SUCCESSFUL treasury secretary from the 90's is placing blame where it belongs. This is more than just placing blame though, because from his success, and his replacements failure, we can OBVIOUSLY see how government SHOULD be run.
**Hint, not by Republicans.
At the time, Mr. Paulson said he hoped never to use the authority. “If you’ve got a bazooka and people know you’ve got it, you may not have to take it out,” he told one Congressional panel.
I didn't realize the NRA was running our financial sector too. Outstanding... didn't work on finances or self protection. Will they ever learn?
This direct quote requires no comment:
Mr. Paulson responded that Freddie was nearing a crisis and that, in the eyes of the markets, the companies were joined at the hip. He would not treat them differently for fear that similar problems, over time, would engulf Fannie Mae, but that time closer to the election. Mr. Paulson told both companies that they had no choice.
President Bush returned from Camp David, the presidential retreat, on Saturday morning. The Treasury secretary told him that the companies had reluctantly agreed to the plan. Shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday, in a conference room across the hall from Mr. Paulson’s office, the Treasury secretary and Mr. Lockhart signed the documents that give each company access to up to $100 billion in taxpayer money to cover future losses — but also put Fannie and Freddie directly under government control.
peevish-I know. It's just so glaringly obvious, I wouldn't know how to add my halfpence, much less spare a dime. There's a piece in BBC on the parallels of the housing disaster in the UK.
peevish-I just heard about somione's rocket fuel blowing up in TX. I hope it didn't have anything to do with your research. ;)
suzi,
LOL, don't worry, I play with jet fuel... on the rare occasion I actually have time to work on it. We're also working to keep planes IN the air. ;)
I have a feeling it wouldn't have helped John McCain though.
It is time to focus on the issues and not Palin - USA Today/Gallup has McCain/Palin up by +10. This is just what the Republicans want us to do - that way they do not have to have any plans.
WOW! Here is an excellent article where women (of all ages - ranging from 23 to 60+) ALL said they were disappointed in McDoucbag's picking Palin as his running mate.
http://tiny.cc/ntmRs
suzi and Dave,
You know, I remember being called a pessimist so many times in the last 5 1/2 years. I have honestly been complaining about the stupid housing market and the ridiculous lending practice since the day I bought my house. I kept saying that the practices were ridiculous, and advising everyone I knew not to take the loans.
Everyone kept insisting that there was no problem! HOUSING PRICES ALWAYS GO UP! As long as their home was worth more, they could just sell it or refinance, so they would never have to worry about actually paying back their loans!
WHAT?!?!
Well I shot back that incomes were not rising anywhere near as quickly as housing prices, and that we had NEVER IN HISTORY spent such a high percentage of our income on a mortgage. At the astonishing rate of increase that was taking place, either prices would rise so high that people couldn't even afford the promotional rates, or some bank would just smarten up and decide to actually ensure the new borrower could afford the loan, causing them to not even give the loan.
The end result was a mixture of the two theories. As everyone here can testify, I'm not always right, however, when I am right... I'm almost always the minority opinion on the subject. "The Fool on the Hill" is my favorite song for a reason. ;)
Why aren't I ever right about good things, like John Kerry winning?

And here is a video regarding Palin...

mike in ga,
USA Today/Gallup have been all over the board since the election season started. Next week the polls will magically show a statistical tie. Few here put any stock in an individual poll, whether good or bad.
The continuing crisis in the housing industry SHOULD hurt McCain and his fellow Republicans. The Republican Treasury Secretary saying that he is bailing out the companies now to make sure he doesn't have to bail them out closer to the election should intensify this damage. Hopefully the talking heads will pick up on this.
New photo
I hope the baby gets my wife's nose, unfortunately that giant Italian monstrosity seems to be dominant. =/
AP - I understand the ups/downs of the polls, however, don't underestimate the McCain/Palin strategy that Rove is using against the Democrats. Americans want change but they also love to hate the MSM - they should focus on 3-4 major concerns with the "Lipstick Lady" and keep driving those points home (over and over and over again). Just like the bigots have done with the false accusations and slime they have thrown at Senator Obama. For 30+ years I watched the Republicans stay on message EVEN if they didn't have a message. It didn't matter if it was true or not - just as long as it would stick to thier opponent. When we raise a dozen issues against Palin - all we do is confuse the not so politically knowledgeable voters. I've tried many times to convince some of my older friends (60's/70's) to be open minded but still they believe this trash that has been out there against Senator Obama (Many of them believe what they want to hear more than facts).
Can anyone explain to me what's going on before I give up all hope?
We have Obama now stating that he believes that the Surge has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams (expectations)!
We have Obama now saying that he may not cancell the Bush Tax Credits because of the economy, but will let them expire anyway!
Then we have Biden saying that Rove is a Great American, that Palin is a skilled politician with a compelling biography.
Then we have Palin getting deafening cheers when she says her son is off to Iraq to help protect her and the American people, while Obama says he once considered joining the military.
And Palin is out there campaigning with one lie after another and never getting called on a single one, and not speaking to the media.
What the hell is happening? Is Obama and Biden trying to loose this election or do they know something I don't.
mike in ga,
I can agree with that. On the plus side, I'm pretty sure my Libertarian friend is voting Obama. =)
That's a big win in my book. He's very smart, but it is almost impossible to get most Libertarians off the idealistic dream world they would like.
Luckily, when Bush is the alternative, and we have 8 years of evidence to what that causes, it makes it much easier. It may not be exactly what they want, but it is MUCH closer.
bob,
I feel your pain. As mike in ga just pointed out, Republicans win by sticking to their message, regardless of truth. Eventually, they repeat it enough, and people actually believe it is truth.
Democrats are too often coming off of truth based on public outcry. If they just stuck with it, the people might accept it, but when they waver, it gives the Republicans amo to say it wasn't true in the first place.
Not good. It is my problem with MSNBC and their most recent moves. Claiming that their move to the left was terrible, while FOX has spent 10 years perched on the right. Even those who are liberal at MSNBC, which is not all of them, preach their theories based on TRUTH. This is biased, but it is a truth based bias.
FOX spews their garbage with complete fiction. Not even attempting to use facts, and continuing to use fiction after it has been debunked. They continue doing it, and people have just accepted it.
RIDICULOUS
GROW A BACKBONE AND TELL THE PEOPLE WHAT IS WHAT. IGNORE POLLS AND OPINIONS. IF YOU'RE RIGHT, THE POLLS AND OPINIONS WILL EVENTUALLY FOLLOW YOU.
Expecting an immediate swing just because you're right is the immediate gratification attitude that got us INTO all of these messes.

Obama said outright that he was well aware of how the Republicans would come out slinging shit, and he promised everyone, during the primaries, that he would fight back against the Republicans crap. Throughout the primaies Hillery was clearly the stronger candidate, but Obama was made the Democratic Candidate, in part, because of this assertion. She had no quams about negative advertising or screaming fowl.
Biden should get down to it. Call a spade a spade, and don't take that crap about Palin being a woman and attacking her is sexist. She's one real acid mouth, and she's got more gaul (balls) than Biden and Obama combined. How the hell is Biden going to stand up to her in any debate. She's been in a lot of cat fights, that we guys can't possibly match.
Bob said: "We have Obama now stating that he believes that the Surge has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams (expectations)!"
Bob-
Obama did say that but following that statement he said that the surge DID NOT accomplish the goal of getting the Iraqi government to take control and do what they were supposed to be doing. Obama was referring to the success at bring down the violence - not achieving the goals.
This is Sunday ... Saturday and Sunday are not good days to throw punches and get the news out in the media because not many people watch the news on the weekends. Look at what happens starting tomorrow and before next weekend.
Have faith - Obama knows what he is doing.

When Stephanopolous (spelling) asked Obama what he thought of Palin's joke about community organizers all he said was its curious or something like that. He should have jumped down Stephanopolous's throat, screaming that she had smeared every well intentioned group in America. How unamerican can that be. And that aint sexist.
And instead of reacting, Obama and Biden should be out there firing off one charge after another, true or untrue. Then the other side has to react. The National Enquirer is doing a way better job than our boys.
We have plenty of amunition. My God. Palin's husband for christ sake belongs to an organization with separist leanings. She bans books, over runs budgets, flip flops on bridges. It goes on and on and none of it is sexist.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it would appear to me that history is about to repeat itself.
Mike-in-ga, I'm right there with ya. My mother of all people, the devout "Christian" that she claims to be (65 years old) believes the crap that Obama is a Muslim.
She didn't want to vote for McCain because she doesn't like him (she still lives in AZ), but because Palin is 100% anti-choice, my mother fell right in line and thinks McCain is now "The One." I pointed out the story surrounding McCain's divorce (my mother didn't even know that his 1st wife was in a car accident and he left her after she had been permanently disabled), she doesn't care. Why? Because it happened 20+ years ago.
She's also in favor of McCain and Palin because of their staunch anti-gay stance, ironic huh? She doesn't wish for her child to pursue the same happiness that she has with her husband.
I called her out as a hypocrite because Obama is the epitome of what and more importantly HOW a "Christian" should live. I still find it amazing these people (including my mother) think that EQUAL rights is the same as "SPECIAL" rights.
Now I also understand that some believe that Separate but equal is inherently not equal. However, I disagree if ALL provisions afforded are equal.
leah in texas4obama:
true true. But did you hear Palin's speach today which got big coverage. She didn't mention the part about not achieving the goals.
The crowd went crazy with the charge that Obama has now acknowledged that the Surge worked, worked beyond out wildest expectations.
That is what the public will hear, not the part about not achieving goals.
Bob-
Everything that has happened in the past week will be forgotten two weeks from now.
Obama knows when to hit back and when not too.
We will see a lot of punches being thrown after Palin meets up with the press, etc.
Obama and Biden have to be a bit more careful the first week or so because America hasn't gotten to know Palin yet.. Obama and Biden can't come out too strong until the Palin newness wears off a bit .. then they can attack more without looking like two men trying to beat up a woman.
Relax it's only been a little over a week... things will fall into place.
Obama has done fine so far by taking the high road. Palin and McCain will keep up their insulting tactics and look like crap in the end.
And the reporters will help to bring Palin down with various issues: trooper-gate, her cult church, her airplane and chef lie, her flip-flops on ear-marks, her possible affair, etc., etc., etc.
Relax :)
Republican tactic: DENY DENY DENY
GOING INTO IRAQ WAS THE RIGHT THING! WE GOT RID OF THE TERRORISTS!
(it becomes apparent there was no terrorist problem in Iraq)
They change the message to freeing the Iraqis and spreading democracy.
IT WILL BE EASY AND CHEAP
(it is very hard and very expensive)
McCain claims he never said such a thing.
DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLE: Tell the truth and try to make things better.
Obama admits that the surge accomplish the goal of diminishing violence, but states it did not set up Iraq for US withdrawal, and they are now even more dependent on our troops.
Honestly, I want honest and intelligent leaders who can admit when they're wrong, and change tactics when they don't work. I don't blame Obama or Biden, I blame the dumb ass voters. They're the ones that respond to lies and complain about those that admit mistakes. They're the problem. Denying he had ever made a mistake, or refusing to compromise, or spreading filth and lies about the Republicans would make Obama as bad as the Republicans. Then what would be the point in getting him elected?
Education is the key.
Leah, Independant voter and Ed in Ga.
Here's another one. How many people actually believe that the Democrats, dissed the American Flag at the Denver Convention by dumping them in the garbage, once the TV cameras were shut down.
I bet a lot, even though the whole thing was probably theft with the intention of smearing the Democrats. It got big coverage.
Leah,
I tend to agree.
Bob, you are also demanding the immediate gratification I complained about earlier. It doesn't matter when it comes, as long as it does the trick before November 4th.
Timing these blows to get the best results will be important. Making sure they are true and will be perceived as such will be important. Being careful to not be labeled sexist, elitist, or a flip-flopper is a must, and these two candidates are being very cautious for very good reason about this issue. Give it time. Biden is a great debater, and will put Palin to shame.
Bob, remember what I said a couple of weeks ago. Much of it is a game of "peaking at the right time". McCain is just now coming out of their convention.
You have to remember, Obama is a VERY respectful candidate, that does not come along very often. McCain and Palin are bottom feeders. Unfortunately we have WAY too many bottom feeders in the general public that like their type of politics.
But the LA Times story that I posted earlier also addressed how women did NOT respond very well to Palin. The ONLY women who really responded well to her were the evangelicals like my mother.
This constant barage of crap works in converting the voter. You can't let it slide.
Sticking to the high road and not getting elected got us 8 years of Bush. Who remembers all of his lies. Had Ross Perot not run, we whould have had 8 years of Bush 43 as well.
Well, I'm willng (have no choice) to wait another month, but after that.........
Bob, I've watched the news all weekend (well almost all weekend), and I haven't seen the "flag" story air at all. I did see the article that Leah posted from HuffPo, but that's it.
I still hope that the DNC presses theft and charging the McCain campaign for knowingly receiving stolen goods.

*** Palin Gaffe Alert ***
Palin Confuses Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae and Government Role - First Gaffe
Sunday, September 07, 2008
Well, McCain campaign advisor Todd Harris said they didn't want Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to make a mistake early on, and that's exactly what happened today. Palin, commenting on the news that the Federal Goverment was going to take over the poortly performing loan organizations Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae, apparently did not know that the firms were privately owned and held. Palin said this, as written by the McClatchy Washington Bureau:
McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, speaking in Colorado Springs, Colo., said Fannie and Freddie had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." The companies, however, aren't taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization.
It's this basic lack of knoweldge of Federal Government operation that both Obama / Biden supporters and GOP backers who questioned McCain's logic in selecting Palin are concerned with. Palin has no experience in talking about, let alone working to solve, Federal Government problems and policy matters on a regular basis that many wondered if McCain would have to engage in "on the campaign trail" training.
It appears that's the case.
This comes a week before Palin's scheduled ABC interview.

Bastards!
Mike
I usually notice stories like this, but until this morning, I hadn't heard anything -- and it's 4-7 days old!
New details about plot to kill Obama
Of course, I only noticed this link on a blog I usually don't check out, Orcinus, which adds some contextual details to this story.
It looks like it's not being covered at all, outside of a local Colorado station. Has anyone else here heard about this story? I'm not particularly worried about Obama's safety, but a plot that appears to be at least somewhat credible should have gotten more general coverage.
Thanks.
Mike -- the voter-suppression/disqualification/disappearance story isn't just Virginia. It's happening widely, in states like Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Ohio and Nevada.
why is all this stuff not making it to the MSM? Palin's gaffes, Obama's death threats, the flag fiasco, etc?
I'd just as soon the death plan stuff doesn't make it to the MSM. Particularly the idiot MSM that includes how to details
What gets me beyond belief is how these people are turned loose. In the past, make a threat against a Presidential candidate or a President, go to jail forever. Of course, those candidates were White.
"Palin to give first television interview to national media"
CNN confirms that Palin will sit down with Charles Gibson of ABC News later this week; the exact date has yet to be announced.....UPDATE, 3:15 p.m.: CNN Correspondent Dana Bash has confirmed...the plan is for Gibson to have time with Palin over two days — Thursday and Friday of this coming week. The interview will be part sit-down, part walk-and-talk at various locations in Alaska.

At this rate, and with less than 8 weeks to go before the election, Palin may actually answer up to a dozon questions before folks head to the polls to vote. Geez.
It's the economy stupid!! It's not Palin. This is going to be my last post about Palin because I firmly believe we (bloggers) need to take the focus off of Palin and put it back on the issues where it belongs. Of course I say that and watch, she'll say something to piss me off during her 5 minute interview with Charlie.
I wish Tim Russert were still around to do a proper media vetting on MTP. RIP Tim, RIP.
Aunt Judy
the remark about President Clinton is not appreciated.I would appreciated if you would keep from making those nasty kind of comments. Would will have a darn good president in Obama if he's half as good as Clinton was!!AJ
Aunt Judy
one more thing I do believe that Obama will make a good president. AJ
Aunt Jean -- I'm sorry about that. It was an attempt at a joke that, in hind sight, I can see why you wouldn't think it was funny. In actuality, my hope is that the Clinton's get totally involved in backing Obama and trashing McCain-Palin. Again, I'm sorry....I'll go back and see if I can delete it.
Karen Anne
believe it or not I think if someone made a bonfided death threat against any presidental that they would go to prison. I don't think it would have anything to do if they are white, AA, or any other race. It gets tiresome when everyone makes this a race issue or tries. AJ
Trying this again:
I'd love to be a fly on the wall during this lunch:
"Obama, Bill Clinton to sit down for a private lunch"
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/08/obama-bill-clinton-to-sit-down-for-a-private-lunch-2/
Maybe Bill's going to offer to become VERY involved on the campaign trail. His speech at the convention was great and I, for one, would really like to see him build on it while's stumping for Obama.
:)
Aunt Judy
as far as the death threats I think it has to do more with him being a democrat than Obama being AA. AJ
Aunt Judy
thanks! I don't think that it's anything to ignore because we need Obama in there. All I'm saying is I think if Hillary had won the same thing would have happened. AJ
Aunt Judy
one more thing about Palin because I really don't like talking about her . It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I wonder how much she has to pay people to wave at her and say good morning or afternoon Sarah. Like she is the best it make me want to puke when I think about it. The bit## baracuda from hell!LOL AJ
Aunt Judy
by the way I like your name. AJ
does those 2 letters mean anything to you. I'm also an aunt and great aunt of 23 greats my last count but it might be more. I can't keep up with them.LOL AJ
I tell you, more than 1/2 a billion dollars of little peoples contibutions to the Obama campaign will be completely lost if this approach to campaigning keeps up.
Gallup now has a 3 point spread in favour of McCain. That is due to Palin, not McCain. I don't agree that we should be ignoring Palin. Yes people vote for the head of the ticket, but in htis case she is who the people are voting for.
Bob,
Matt has an item on the front page about convention bounces.
We're Democrats, we can do more than one thing at a time:-) Clobber McCain on issues and clobber Caribou Barbie on her lies and extreme rightwing positions.
Dave,
I'd love to have a chat with your mother.
1. Show her the MULTIPLE lies coming out of the Repubs (war-lie, Palin lies, etc.) and tell her to read Revelations 21:8 and Deuteronomy 5:20.
2. Show her this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdJUCU1UH2w
and tell her to read Matthew 5:9
3. Ask her how she would feel if someone called her an atheist. Tell her that she has done the same thing to Obama by calling him a Muslim. Tell her to read Deuteronomy 5:20 again.
Bob-
Criticizing Obama or making critical remarks regarding Obama for how he is handling the situation at the moment is not going to help anything.
"as far as the death threats I think it has to do more with him being a democrat than Obama being AA. AJ "
You really need to look at the ones coming from the KKK and other Supremacist groups against Obama. They are quite alarming.
We really need to pray for him because if anything happens to him, God help America and other countries too for that matter.
dangit, it's hard, but I trust the Obama campaign (OC) to come out with a full-court press here ... any minute now ...
leaving for the gym in 30 minutes, though!
Vicki - Love Seattle....reminds me of Austin, TX.
I agree about the need for a full-court media blitz. They need to do it AND soon! The election is his to loose if the DNC continues campaigning like they did for Gore and Kerry.
Tough times call for tough tactics.
Good article about the PUMA group and how it was stated by a McCain backer in an effort to capture the vote of previous Hillary supporters. It was written before Palin was on the ticket.

"Hey Hockey Mom -- Meet Therapy Mom"
By Cheryl Fries, Austin, TX
A famous essay about parenting a child with a disability compares the experience to planning a trip to Italy and ending up in Holland. Not what you planned but nice in its own way. I've always thought that essay was designed to make other people feel good. After living it for a decade, I think the experience is really more Holland-meets-Baghdad.
As those of us who've been on this road for some years now know, unless she contracts it out, Sarah Palin's status as a special-needs mom is about to force her to trade in her puck for a job requiring a lot less lipstick.
The truth is that a devoted special-needs mom won't be cheering from the stands at the hockey rink. She'll be driving to therapy sessions (physical therapy, occupational therapy, hippotherapy, aquatic therapy, music therapy--oh, there are therapies you've never even heard of), where she will pay a minimum of $100 an hour for essential intervention services to maximize her child's abilities. She'll sit for hours every week in clinic waiting rooms where the atmosphere is a lot less festive than the bleachers at the game. She won't be cheering when her boy makes a goal, but she will cry when he learns to hold a cup, or drink out of one, or call it by its name, even if he does so years after other kids his age.
She will probably have to give up her career so she can get to all the appointments, and then have time for all the home exercises the therapists and doctors assign. She'll forego new clothes and cars and vacations so she can afford the therapies, because they are not covered by insurance. In fact, if she isn't, say, a government employee, she'll discover that her family's monthly health insurance bill can dwarf their mortgage payment--if her family can get health insurance. And when he gets to school, she'll learn very fast that education dollars that could make a real difference for her child will be allocated to the hockey team.
I'm glad to hear Sarah Palin promise a voice for special-needs kids in Washington, DC. But I don't believe her. Her party has battled implementation of the Americans With Disabilities Act and chipped away at the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act until both are mostly just paper the non-disabled can feel good about. People with disabilities are the most discriminated against people in the USA, and the GOP record on civil rights does not bring me to Palin's playing field.
It might be different in a few years. When her son is older, and Governor Palin has spent some time here, maybe she'll redirect her invective toward the summer camps that refuse to admit her son and the schools that can't or won't teach him and the health insurance companies that refuse to insure him. Maybe after she's fought for his civil rights, she won't hate Democrats quite so much.
Governor, welcome to Holland.
Unfortunately, I don't think Palin will be doing any of that.
Anyone who'd dump a special needs baby on baby sitters obviously either doesn't have a clue or doesn't care.
I've probably said this before, but I've taken better care of chronically ill cats than that.
Just because someone has a bunch of kids does not mean that they are a good mother.
I read yesterday that after she had Piper (six years old now) that she went back to work the NEXT day. After she had the baby Trig she went to back in 3 days, on a Monday.
Something is wrong here. Normally new mothers want to take 'at least a week' off to stay home and bond with their new born. Something very bizarre seems to be going on.
I think that Palin is addicted to her job and to power.
There are alot of mothers out there that have babies and NEVER bond with them. I think we need to see her medical records and see if there is sometime of mental disorder in there.
Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/08/obama-campaign-calls-mccain-ad-a-lie/
.
Leah -- LMAO! That would be great but it's probably not going to happen. Look how long it took to get McCain to release his medical records....even then there was large portions blocked out.
Anyways, that mom is a friend of a friend here in Austin. She used to work full-time as a writer until she had her special needs child. I just thought it was a beautifully written piece and I wanted to share.
Aunt Judy -- Your post brings me to an email my mother sent to me a couple of days ago regarding Palin and raising a child with a disability. My mother raised three children, two of whom have severe and multiple disabilities. Both she and I have graduate degrees in special education with emphasis on multi-handicapped issues (though I'm an engineer now -- a long story). After reading this column, she wrote me this (I apologize for its length). I have not edited it in any way:
I just read the “Gov. Palin and Women’s Issues” blog - and printed it out for Dad. It's very well stated. But:
One other issue that was avoided in all this hoopla, about women who can do it all, is the added demands in parenting a child with a serious disability while trying to carry out a complex high level professional job -- especially in a family with numerous other children. The demand on the family is not just a matter of hiring a Nanny or Dad taking over the additional aspects of this type of parenting.
Disabilities is the third and , maybe even the hardest, barrier in this society. Like February’s Black History month, we do have the Annual Special Olympics focus, to make us all feel better. And all those kids with Down Syndrome are the S.O. poster children and adults, whom everyone lauds that week. The rest of the year and the rest of the persons with multiple challenges (especially with the recently widespread and costly increase of Autism) are sources of both conflict and downright fighting in educational and adult rights realms.
If you do a good job as the parent of such children, people call you some kind of saint. If you do not, they look away. They do not help move the constant barriers each family experiences, that mean long hard hours of constant pushing and advocating. It took MFOFC 11 years of continual family advocacy to get Flexible Family Funding as a MA budget line item, 3 years ago, just to help families bear the extra costs incurred in keeping a child with disabilities at home. That line item has only helped relatively few families and is so uneven as to be sadly laughable for some families. But it has helped, and every year we continue to lobby for an increase in that line item and in helping more families keep their child at home.
I know those parents and how tired they are. And I know their divorce rate is higher than the already high national average of 50%.
People in the U.S. society avoid discussing the fact that having children with significant disabilities takes more than average time, money and parenting investments, if you are to do a good job by that child. They avoid the fact that even the best investment of time, tears, money, dedication, education and hard work do not guarantee a good outcome. Or the fact that a lesser investment makes the odds of achieving any kind of good life for their child and the whole family significantly lower.
I'd have the same concern about the balance of job and family, if a man with this particular family situation were vying for VP ; this is not a sexist issue. I've personally seen the quadrupled difficulty for single parents (or even couples who jockey too much professional work) when they try to deal with the inevitable barriers they encounter in the life of their disabled child, not to mention the child’s personal human needs.
On the "Repugnant" Platform stage, the thought conveyed regarding the pretty ‘American Super Mom’ was, “Of course, she can do it! She can do anything. She’s a strong woman, and has been doing it all along. She’s a working parent, and we all have challenges as working parents, but we handle them and that makes her like the rest of us.” And, that teen pregnancy – we all face that, and aren’t they looking sweet, holding hands for all to see that this is just another piece of working family cake.
It all looked especially easy with that docile, sleepy baby-in-arms, so quiet and cozy. A far cry from the reality care that baby on the stage will need from both parents, even with the advantage of the public stage viewing. (I'm still interested in whether he has hearing loss or deafness! which sure will complicate his and their parental needs big time. )
The pressing underlying issues relating to the unspoken needs of families with children with significant disabilities as well as adults with disabilities remain as a huge social prejudicial ceiling. Sarah Palin hasn't begun to know what this is really about, and speaking directly to "parents of children with special needs," saying that that she will be their voice in the White House was simply facile and ignorant.
Those children grow up and, in this society, their entitlements die at 22, they are no longer poster positives, and the related family and personal issues don't go away and are overlooked or ignored.
I’ve been taught so much by you three kids and could never have learned what I’ve learned if I had taken a high power professional job while any of you were young. The first job I took was while you were in grammar school and M. was in preschool when I went to work for the Museum of Natural History to pay for a certified teacher-tutor for Gracia while I worked – thinking that that person would be better than I. What I found out was that she observed me with Gracia and spoke with me often, then stole all the strategies and wrote reports (which I later discovered) making it sound as though she had thought of the strategies herself. Live and learn. I’m just another parent trying to be part of the larger community of parents and advocates in this country. I’m not ‘Super Mom” and “Just Mom” will do fine. XOX.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Monday afternoon shows the two candidates tied at 48.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/08/campaign.w...
With only 4% undecided still 8 weeks out from the election , I'm not sure this poll is totally accurate, but it's much better than the just-released Gallup poll showing McLame(brain) with a 10 point lead.

Leah Texas4Obama:
I've been outside working for a couple of hours, and things look a little differently now. I've calmed down. So I agree Leah, my comments were really counter productive and things can change very rapidly.
I have a feeling more is in the works.
Many positive things happening today.
More polls are coming out showing that the poll with McCain up by ten is an outlier.
Hillary gave a couple good stump speeches today.
Obama camp has come out and called McCain's new ad a LIE.
Biden is on the campaign trail giving em' hell.
The news folks are starting to talk more now about Palin's flip-flops and mis-statements.
The media has started reporting on Palin first HUGE gaffe 'her thinking that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae' was a government program and not privately owned.
I feeeeeel good ;)
Oh .. and both Bush and Cheney have come out and said that they support Palin.
That will help the democrats ;)
The buzz on CNN today continue's to focus on Palin instead of McCaiin. Except that to say McCain's stump stops are finally drawing Obama-size crowds. Thus, they've scheduled a few more before she heads home to Alaska to do her one and only interview before the elections.
Also of note today, CNN is showing 2 YouTube video's of Palin speaking before her church talking about how the soldier's in Iraq are doing God's mission.
Speaking of YouTube:
Here's Palin and Stevens appearing together to talk about earmarks July 2008:

Palin Lied About Wedding - Eloped Because First Child Out Of Wedlock
http://sarahpalinexposed.com/
Excerpt:
On the campaign trail, Sarah Palin has repeatedly claimed she and her husband Todd eloped to spare her family the expense of a wedding - a touching tale that does not appear to be true.
At a campaign stop in Dayton, Ohio on August 29, Palin declared that she and her husband were celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Her first son Track was born on April 20, 1989, which is less than 8 months after their wedding.

Just saw this below. Tell me they didn't do this...is there no depth to which Repugs will not sink?
A visibly upset Keith Olbermann apologized to viewers Thursday night for the graphic 9/11 tribute played in the lead-up to John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.
Olbermann said of the video:
"If at this late date, any television network had, of its own accord, shown that much video tape and that much graphic video tape of 9/11...it, we, would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead,.

I got this from a long time friend, who said the author had sent it to him.
This is the kind of thing that I'd otherwise assume was an urban legend. I googled "my holiday with mccain" and didn't come up with anything.
I can't imagine why Cindy, who reportedly has a prenup keeping their finances separate, stays with him if this is accurate.
Here it is:
My Holiday with McCain
It was just before John McCain's last run at the presidential nomination in 2000 that my husband and I vacationed in Turtle Island in Fiji with John McCain, Cindy, and their children, including Bridget (their adopted Bangladeshi child).
It was not our intention, but it was our misfortune to be in close quarters with John McCain for almost a week since Turtle Island has a small number of bungalows and their focus on communal meals force all vacationers who are there at the same time to get to know each other intimately.
He arrived at our first group meal and started reading quotes from a pile of William Faulkner books with a forest of Post-Its sticking out of them. As an English Literature major myself, my first thought was "if he likes this so much, why hasn't he memorized any of this yet?" I soon realized that McCain actually thought we had come on vacation to be a volunteer audience for his "readings" which then became a regular part of each meal. Out of politeness, none of the vacationers initially protested at this intrusion into their blissful holiday, but people's buttons definitely got pushed as the readings continued day after day.
Unfortunately this was not his only contribution to our mealtime entertainment. He waxed on during one meal about how Indo-Chine women had the best figures and that our American corn-fed women just couldn't meet up to this standard. He also made it a point that all of us should stop Cindy from having dessert as her weight was too high and made a few comments to Amy, the 25 year old wife of the honeymooning couple from Nebraska that she should eat less as she needed to lose weight.
McCain's appreciation of the beauty of Asian women was so great that David the American economist had to move his Thai wife to the other side of the table from McCain as McCain kept aggressively flirting with and touching her.
Needless to say I was irritated at his large ego, and his rude behavior towards his wife and other women, but decided he must have some redeeming qualities as he had adopted a handicapped child from Bangladesh. I asked him about this one day and his response was shocking -"Oh, that was Cindy's idea - I didn't have anything to do with it. She just went and adopted this thing without even asking me. You can't imagine how people stare when I wheel this ugly, black thing around in a shopping cart in Arizona. No, it wasn't my idea at all."
I actively avoided McCain after that, but unfortunately one day he engaged me in a political discussion which soon got us on the topic of the active US bombing of Iraq at that time. I was shocked when he said "if I was in charge, I would nuke Iraq to teach them a lesson". Given McCain's personal experience with the horrors of war I had expected a more balanced point of view. I commented on the tragic consequences of the nuclear attacks on Japan during WWII - but no, he was not to be dissuaded. He went on to say that if it was up to him he would have dropped many more nuclear bombs on Japan. I rapidly extricated myself from this conversation as I could tell that his experience being tortured as a POW didn't seem to have mellowed out his perspective but rather had made him more aggressive, and vengeful towards the world.
My final encounter with McCain was on the morning that he was leaving Turtle Island. Amy and I were happily eating pancakes when McCain arrived and told Amy that she shouldn't be having pancakes because she needed to lose weight. Amy burst into tears at this abusive comment. I felt fiercely protective of Amy and immediately turned to McCain and told him to leave her alone. He became very angry and abusive towards me, and said "don't you know who I am" and I looked him in the face and said "yes, you are the biggest asshole I have ever met" and headed back to my cabin. I am happy to say that later that day when I arrived at lunch I was given a standing ovation by all the guests for having stood up to McCain's bullying.
Although I have shared my McCain story informally with friends, this is the first time I am making this public. I almost did so in 2000, when McCain first announced his bid for the Republican nomination but it soon became apparent that George Bush was the shoo-in candidate and so I did not act then. However, now that there is a very real possibility that McCain could be elected as our next president, I feel it is my duty as an American citizen to share this story. I can't imagine a more scary outcome for America than that this abusive, aggressive man should lead our nation. I have observed him in intimate surroundings as he really is, not how the media portrays him to be. If his attitudes toward women, and his treatment of his own family are even a small indicator of his real personality, then I shudder to think what will happen to America were he to be elected as our President.
Karen Anne-
Go to: http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/08/lies-nowhere/
and the counter is right there after the 4th paragraph in the article.
It says 19 lies now.
Let me know if you can't find it.
Karen Anne-
Yes, at the republican convention they said it was going to be a 'tribute to 9/11' but it was a video of propaganda that started out with clips of Iranians... and it was not a true tribute to the people that died or the people that volunteered... it was pure propaganda - the Repubs are now trying to link Iran to 9/11. The video is probably on YouTube.
It was pretty bad because no one was expecting it.
Karen Anne - two comments to your previous posts. First, I drank the "Republican Kool-Aid" for 30+ years until my wife and I switched to Senator Obama this year. The Republicans have no shame - they will use anything they can find whether it is true or false to win an election. The thing they do well, however, is to stay focused and repeat the same point (usually garbage) over and over and over again. The undecided and uninformed (lazy) electorate will believe anything they hear if they hear/see it multiple times. In addition to the issues, Senator Obama needs to pick 2-3 "factual character zingers" and stick to them every single day from now until the elections. It hurts the Democratic cause when people like Wolf Blitzer go public and rebut issues like the library issue and the huge number of small issues that are so hard to prove. People get turned off and end up blaming the MSM for "Picking" on the poor little "Lipstick Lady". If they are proven facts - it's much more difficult to deny/rebut. My second comment to your latest post - It was extremely enlightening, however, it needs the individual's name so it does not appear anonymous. Hopefully this individual and his wife will go public and be interviewed by the MSM. It would be a great "character buster".
Karen Ann - I've been to Fiji - the behavior of the tourists never fails to amaze them. McCain sounds like he was over-the-top. I can guarantee you, it wasn't just the other vacationers that were put off by his behavior.
Lying about eloping gets under my skin for personal reasons. The order of my relationship with Michael and me was engagement, pregnancy, wedding. I post this because I didn't know I was pregnant for 21/2 months. Once I did, we didn't elope. We still had our wedding when we planned on having it. This wasn't 20 yrs. ago, but we still didn't give the excuse of finances, even though I'm sure we had less than the Palin's did.
peevish-I'm giving myself the same kind of advice I gave you. I had to have a little house-cleaning at work. It was necessary, but it still didn't feel good. :(
suzi - sorry to hear about the work-housecleaning. it never feels good. but it is necessary to keep all the good eggs from leaving.
vicki-Exactly! The benefits are bare bones, so I try to keep the work environment positive. It was nice to hear one of my associates say he likes to see his manager do what I ask others to do, like sweeping. It's hard to stand straight by the time I'm home, but it's an honest day's labor.
tyler and aunt jean-I appreciated your posts today also. I've only had one family member with special needs, so I can't imagine how challenging and rewarding it is.
one is enough, suzi - special needs means that the whole family pitches in (ideally).
oh, and I was thinking that "housecleaning" was code for "letting some folks go", but actual housecleaning also needs to be done. I need to go buy a broom and dustpan tomorrow, plus maybe some paper towels. Washed the front windows the other day.
It's been a while as I have been in a catatonic state of utter disbelief at the level of cynical hypocrisy at work in our politics. So after just sitting back for a while here is what I think the problem is.
Republicans = focus and discipline
Democrats = disorganized, complete lack of discipline following every new republican herring onto the latest thing instead of sticking to the point.
It's maddening when you start looking at it.
The last two weeks the right has been on point and unmoving. The democrats keep attacking every new insult to the intelligence of normal people and never holding the line on anything.
We need political race leadership.
Pick a story, any story and stick with it. Pick Troopergate and don't let it go til the mainstream press get on it. Turn every question about any issue back to this. That's what the republicans do, all of them, and it's genius.
Please I'm begging, someone take control of the democratic party talking heads.
It's killing me. Really.
Suz
you wouldn't believe how many fights I got into at school protecting her. She is only 3 years younger than I am. I look back at things that happened when I was younger that always involved Kathy [that's her name] and it chaps my ass that Palin doesn't, won't, or whatever you want to call it raise her son. I guess in her case politics come before family.
Just goes to show what type of person she is.My Mother gave her life for her kids and even more of her life for Kathy. She stills lives with my mother. I go get her every Tuesday and Friday to give my mother alittle break. Even though she has never complained about always being with Kathy.
Everyone needs time for themselves. I guess Palin just needs everyday all day. If she didn't want to raise this child why didn't she use some form of birth control? I guess in her eyes it made her seem like more of a woman but in reality it just makes her look like an unfit mother. AJ
New Obama Commercial (I wish):
McCain says: I will change Washington. I will rid Washington of Corruption. I will rid Washington of its earmarks. I will rid washington of the influence that Lobyst Have.
McCain..... Fix your party on your own Dime
Keryl,
It's not just the Repig politicians who get on one point, and won't move. It's the Repig sycophants who are as bad or worse, but don't really have anything to back up their blatant blatherings.
For instance, over at pollster.com, there are several who are stating that Palin was ALWAYS against the Bridge to Nowhere. And one who asserted that Senator Obama voted against moving the funds from the bridge to go to Louisiana for Katrina relief. They base their post on a single Reich-wing newspaper article from the 'Chicago Daily Observer'. Checking the links, it turns out the bill, sponsored by Tom Coburn, affected 391 categories of legislation, including aborion, aeronautics, AIDS, alternative energy sources, archives and 386 other categories of legislation. It was NOT a single issue bill, but the Chicago rag and the pollster.com poster tried to make it out as such.
I hate the lazy researcher and the lazy, low information voter who listens only to the lazy researchers.
Mike
Don't have much time, but I just felt the need to say:

EDUCATION
EDUCATION
We need to recruit the best political science and history teachers possible. We need to find teachers who not only know the information, but inspire the kids to enjoy and take up the subject too. WE HAVE TO KNOW OUR HISTORY IN ORDER TO MAKE PROPER DECISIONS ON OUR FUTURE.
NOTE: Despite being a Democrat, I do not believe that ALL Republicans are retarded, and that there are not several great right leaning history teachers. My favorite history teacher was a Republican, and his class MADE me a Democrat. A good teacher doesn't mold students into copies of themselves, they open their eyes to the truth and ability to make good decisions.
I just wanted to point that out, because I DO NOT BELIEVE IN BUSH STYLE HIRING, and didn't want my post to be misinterpreted as such. My current history teacher is also a Republican, though he is voting for Obama. He gets rave reviews from former students, and seems to keep the class interested as well as teaching them. This is outstanding, regardless of the teacher's political leaning. Proper history has no party affiliation.
I see many post commenting on how this woman can leave her special needs kid for her work.
There are many attacks we can make against Palin. In fact I would try to pick a number like 10/1 (bad vs good) but I can not come up with one good (really I can not) and you can not divide by 0.
But attacking her for being a mom and trying to work any job probably cause more people to side with her then not. Why can't her husband stay home and raise the family. Really.
My wife and I made a decision that when we had our children we would keep working. But I made an early decision that I would quit work when our children hit the high school age. I felt that it is important to be with the child during early development, but also during the high school years. I love my children and feel it is just as much my responsibility then my wifes. Also, I am better at working with our children at this age then she is.
If we look at her family I can see these are really big problems for her too, but let that loafer of a husband do something and let her get back to running Alaska (and not get any further then that).
(Really this might be bad advice because after she fails here and all the stuff comes out about her, I doubt she will get re-elected. Then both will be out of a job with a teen-age pregnant daughter with a teen-age husband who was forced to marry her and has no job. With a juvenile delinquent son who will be comming back from Iraq in 2 years and raising hell. With a special needs kids needing special care..... They will be lucky that Obama and the Democrates will be runnings or they would be SOL!!!!!)
p'd ant - I agree with you to an extent. Unfortunately, and this is true of ANY history class - regardless of where it is being taught, the US, Russia, China, etc. - history is never taught from a truly historical perspective. It depends on who has written that history. It is all written in a perspective that THEY want the students to believe. That is why I get frustrated with history classes. Entirely TOO many people still believe that Columbus was the first person to "discover" North America, which most of us here know that is not to be the case. I'm sure the exception to that rule would be our village idiot ;)
kujo,
At least until the immigration procedures are done in the Netherlands, I will be the primary caregiver of my child as well. I am a man, and I will be the primary caregiver.
I, nor no one else here is implying that all men are incapable. We are not implying that all women are capable. We are implying that this man is incapable. They made this same argument when she ran for Governor, and they said then as they say now, that he would quit his job and take care of the kids.
What happened?
He didn't quit his jobs. He still competed in the grueling snowmobile races, worked on the very dangerous oil rigs, and worked in the very dangerous big boat fishing industry. He then decided to pile on more, and sit in and oversee her Governing duties.
No one watched the kids.
One kid got pregnant.
This man has NEVER tried being the primary caregiver of these children, and now there are 4 of them, one with special needs. Come December, there will be a 5th, and the daughter will be in High School, making him the primary caregiver of 2 infants, 2 teenagers, and 1 young child.
Dave,
Yes, history is written by the victors. This is very much true, but a good history teacher exposes students to MULTIPLE points of view. My teacher has the book we're assigned, which is a very good book. It is the "victor" story. He also highly recommends a second book, which is effectively the same book, but from the "loser" perspective.
The "victor" book still doesn't always make us look all that good. It talks negatively about Columbus, the British settlers, and tons of others. It just doesn't go into too much detail.
Again, the point is... a good teacher exposes the students to ALL reasonable perspectives and possibilities.
Breaking News !!!
Palin Billed Taxpayers For Nights At Home, Travel To NCAA Game, Sled Race
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/08/AR2008090803088.html?hpid=topnews
.
Kujo, I for one, don't have a problem with her being a "working mother". I do however have several problems that she will be holding the second most stressful and time consuming job in the country. Men, in general, I'm NOT saying all men, do not have the capacity to provide the "nurturing" of a child that a mother can provide. This is much of the reason that the courts have generally sided with the woman in custody battles.
Something within their "small town family values" has obviously broken down in their family. Had they not, their oldest son wouldn't be a criminal and their 17 year old daughter wouldn't be pregnant. This is not just the failure of the kids, but also that of the parents. Especially when one of those parents are a government official who runs based on the "small town family values" platform. Had the parents been fulfilling their parenting responsibilities, they may have been more successful as parents.
Again, I have no problem with her or any other woman being a working mother, but I do have a problem with someone who puts their job over their family responsibilities.
Leah Texas4Obama and Kujo
Me again. Your headline "Palin Billed Taxpayers For Nights At Home, Travel To NCAA Game, Sled Race."
The headline is the sound bite that is needed. That's all that has to be said. Don't try to expand or explain. Let them clairfy it on their own time.
And Kujo thanx for outlining how McCAin dumbs-it-down for the average voter who does no homework whatsoever. McCain says: I will change Washington. I will rid Washington of Corruption. I will rid Washington of its earmarks. I will rid washington of the influence that Lobyst Have. Now that is a fatastic sound bite. It takes our side a half a dozen interview to counter that kind of stuff. While we're doing that they move on and spout more rubish.
Obama goes on forever explaining the minutia of almost every point.
Today he had a great chance to call Palin a lier, but he used words like stretched the truth. Stretching the truth is good politics in the Republican play book and a misdeminer to the average voter. He has to call a lier a lier.
Leah - I wish I could be as optimistic as you about how these issues will stick to Palin, however, I believe this approach is backfiring on the Democrats. I can see the Republican's response tomorrow saying that she is the Governor and anyplace she goes (such as a sled race or NCAA game) is in her official capacity. In the past week I have heard so many rural people complain about the attacks on Palin - they feel the media and the Democratic operatives (I'm quoting them) are grasping at straws to take her down. They've said to me - the pundits are just "crying wolf." The real problem is that most of the people I've listened too were actually elderly life-time Democrats - but they can't stand the fact that Senator Obama is African-American. This may sound ridiculous to you and me - but they would actually go against thier principals rather than vote for him. I ask them - you have voted Democratic all you life - how can you now vote Republican when you know thier positions on the issues? I can see in thier eyes and body language that the real issue is race. It drives me crazy but no matter how much I try to convince them - it is hopeless - they can't look beyond race and will use everything else as an excuse.
I understand that her husband is not capable to our standards. The fact is she is not capable to our standards either. We got to live with that.
Just the notion though that she should not take this job because she is a mom who just gave birth by itself is not an arguement worth winning. As long as this issue is in the press, blogs ... then it will move some women voters over the the WRONG SIDE(hate to say Right side in this case). Most of these women probably never had a baby and don't have the clue of the responsibilities.
So I prefer to hit her in her other vulnerable areas. She is a moron, lier, cheater ....
Mike-in-GA
I disagree.
This will stick.
How many people in America get paid for staying in their own home to sleep?
I can hear it now....
Obama on the stump:
Obama to crowd: "Let's see a show of hands of the people that get re-reimbursed from the government to sleep in their own beds as Governor Palin does."
This is the kind of fraud that the average American HATES!
Excerpt:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.
The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Exactly. And that is all he has to say. I've thought of other ways. Then there is no come back of him being called a lier or a sexist.
Belive it or not 57 days (or less now) is a lot of time. In one week there could be anough doubt spread against either side to change the outcome of this election.
In national media, there needs to be a constant attack against McCain.
Right now we have 3 people campaining to there 1. (palin only introduces McCain while Obama is in Michigan, Biden is in Wisconsin, and Hillery is in Florida. Day in and Day out this has go to take its toll. If you can get Bill out there too that would be even better.
Right now Palin is getting much publicity because everyone wants to listen to her. This is new press story so they cover it every day (like in Blitzers "The Reputition Room") But it will get old and if they don't actually start talking about something, it will hurt in the long run. Remember, it has been less than a week since her first speech. And her speech really was not that good if you listen to the content.
I think it is wise that Obama gives these "Weekly" speeches on issues that are important to this election.
The Obama camp looks much more presidential. McCain looks like a dirty old man.
I don't see what the Republicans can come with next to promote there side, since there goal is not to say anything.
Wasilla Police Billed Sexual Assault Victims for Their Own Rape Kits
http://opedna.com/2008/09/08/wasilla-police-billed-sexual-assault-victims-for-rape-kits/
Excerpt:
While Sarah Palin was serving as the Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, the city charged victims of sexual assault between $300 and $1200 for their own rape kits.
Today I saw an interview with an 89year old woman who said - she can not vote for Obama because of his name - her excuse was - he is "muslim". The area I was raised in and the place I retired to are normally Democratic strong-holds where a Republican hasn't been elected in decades and where Democratic candidates win 70-80 percent of the vote. This year the polls show McCain leading by double digits. In the primaries, the results were similar to what you saw in Kentucky and West Virginia but these same people swear they are not bigots and racists. It brings back memories of when my wife and I moved to each of these two areas to live. I saw the same look in thier eyes and the same body language when they saw my wife was Filipino. In each case it took a long time for people to accept her even though she has been a U.S. Citizen for more than 30 years. Sometimes I believe these older people should be forced to watch how well thier grandchildren interact with each other regardless of thier race. They could learn alot from the kids.
Leah - I sincerely hope you are right. It will take something dramatic to convince these folks where I live to open thier eyes. Even the Union Members are supporting McCain while thier leadership has supported Senator Obama. I just don't understand how they can strongly support Hillary in the primaries and then they flop to McCain even though Barack and Hillary's positions on the issues are so very similar. It will take a miracle to get them to look beyond the color of one's skin.
I don't believe that McCain has very much union support. McCain is against the unions. And even Todd Palin's union told him and Sarah to STOP using the Steelworker's union as a political tool.
I'm off to bed. Goodnight everyone ;)
How do you think the dynamic would change if at every MP rally, one or two people held up signs that simply said:
Jesus was a
[gasp]
COMMUNITY
ORGANIZER!
Neatly hand made signs - not printed by a company - would indicate it was not an 'organized' protest. This also would mean that the official Obama campaign would not need to push that issue in any way, shape or form, but the message would still start to get across.
No chants or slogans, just silent holding up the signs.
Eventually someone in the press would focus a camera on the sign(s), maybe interview the sign holders (maybe the sign holders would refuse to discuss, thus create more buzz) and get the religious right to think (perhaps for the first time in their life?) about what the words 'community organizer' actually mean.
I would do it, but since Maryland is a safe blue state this cycle, I doubt if either M or P will show up near here, even for any kind of fundraiser.
Mike
Mike in Maryland - Sounds like it might work just like at the RNC when the guy held up the sign that said "McCain voted against vets". I still think Senators Obama and Biden need to be more focused in thier attack message (s). As much as I dislike James Carville - he is disciplined and focused. No sense trying to be an "attack dog" if you don't show your teeth.

I have been remiss on this compared to the primary season. Time to pony up for the campaign.
Hopefully the dramatic increase in donations to Obama after Palin appeared will also keep up.
m in md-Great idea! We are impressed with the signage because we realize the level of organization the Obama campaign has, but the Rep. base seems jealous. Wasn't there an advertiser on the front where you could order bumper stickers with logos you create? I'm gonna check it out.
"Jesus was a community organizer" will work about as well as "Jesus was a liberal". In other words, not very. They're both true statements, but to people who aren't liberals (and who don't understand community service) they'll simply look like "me too" signs.
As to Palin, she's a distraction. This campaign is is not about the VP, it's about us taking back our country. Attacking Palin (regardless of the veracity of the attacks) is not what the Obama Campaign is about. Nor should it be.
It's the economy, stupid.
I have been monitoring and enjoying this open thread since the primaries. I have rarely contributed but feel the need to express my personal reasons for supporting Obama. I continually ask myself what my life is like now compared to the BBY-BEFORE BUSH YEARS!!! Here is the answer…
• My husband lost his job of 15 years with Proctor and Gamble to NAFTA-they moved his division to Mexico to save money. They received government $$ to make the move. The displaced employees were given severance, ½ weeks pay for every year of employment…we received 7-1/2 weeks with 52% taken for taxes because it was a lump sum and taxed higher. They agreed to cover insurance for 1 year after dismissal-although they neglected to pay premiums 4 times in the year…we had to fight to get medical bills paid. We were promised 20,000.00 from a government fund set up for displaced NAFTA workers…when the time came to collect…the fund was dry. We were barely making it so my husband took a temp job for 3 weeks during the unemployment waiting period-you must wait the full 7-1/2 weeks of your severance…even though you only got 48% AFTER TAXES. Because of the temp job, we were denied unemployment-after 4 court battles with the FEDS-their decision stood. My husband was 52 and looking for work that would compare to our previous income…He worked for 6 months in a temp position to be let go because the temp contract had run out…he now has a job, but must drive 60 miles to get to it…WITH GAS PRICES SKYROCKETING!
• My other experience involves a son-in-law deployed as part of the longest consecutive service in Iraq…he was deployed for 23 months. They had 2 children, 15 and 6. When he was in Mississippi for training, their families got to visit for a weekend before they were sent to Iraq. While there my daughter became pregnant with their 3rd child. She faced a complicated pregnancy on her own, at 4 months pregnant she was told the baby, a boy, was physically challenged…as well as a tumor on the heart…we were told he would be put on a transplant list if he lived for 24 hours after birth. She went through grueling tests, ultrasounds weekly, EKG’s for the baby and genetics testing to try to pinpoint the breakdown in chromosomes that caused it. He was born 5 weeks early when my daughter started hemorrhaging and had to be flown 80 miles to the hospital in a helicopter. When I met her at the hospital, her bed was soaked in blood (needed 3 pints of blood) and she was rushed to surgery. He was born at 5 lbs, severe deformity in both legs/feet and left hand. His heart held his own and he made it. We contacted the red cross to see if they could intervene and bring my son in law home from Iraq early for his R&R leave that was supposed to start the next week…we were told no…it was not an emergency enough…my daughter asked what the criteria for coming home was and one of the things they said was if you were to win the lottery…he would get an unconditional release to help manage the funds…that one spouse would not be expected to take that on alone…WHAT?????? She was deemed competent enough to handle 3 children on her own, one with disabilities. His name is Ethan, he is 20 months and has had 379 doctor visit-6 serial castings, 5 surgeries, 13 weeks in a full body cast at the age of 3 months and is now in braces…hands and feet as well as now having casts put on and 2 more surgeries in the next month. My daughter is my hero, she held it all together with far greater strength and perseverance than I could ever imagine. My son-in-law has been home for a year now and they have another child, a girl 2 months old.
So, John Mc-needs a cane/Sarah Pale-in comparison, there a many more heroes in this country that go unrecognized for far greater sacrifices than you have made.
Minnesota for Obama,
simple words cannot say how I feel. Tell her to hold her head up high because the pain and heartache she must have gone thru without her husband was uncalled for. She should be so proud of herself.
I don't understand how this country has stooped so low that just human kindness to some is considered a fault. The service he was in is totally sorry to not have let him come home to help his wife carry a hugh burden.
I hope life treats them kind and by the way you didn't say if it was a boy or girl but no matter give them my beat and my love and also your daughter and son in law.AJ
Minnesota for Obama,
One more thing welcome to the thread. I hope that you keep posting and keep us updated about your grandchild. AJ
Bob in Vancouver I’m also alarmed by the hawkish turn coming but I think it’s smart to hold off attacking Palin right now. Obama and Biden should continue to respectfully raise expectations for Palin. Palin’s fifteen minutes are due to expire about thirty seconds into the VP debate, which is supposed to focus on “Domestic and foreign policies”.
If the debate was related to one of Palin’s strong suits (I don’t know what her strong suits are but despite her blind spots about the domestic economy or international realpolitik I’m sure she must be an expert on something or they never would have nominated her in the first place – would they?)
oh canada, her strong suits are that she is a religious nutjob (NO I'm NOT saying that all religious people are nutjobs.....this one however is - and btw, so is my mother). That's all these "Christian Extremists" need in order to vote for her.
Thank you, Minnesota.
Recently, we've seen several moving and profound statements on the open comments section of this blog that are probably read by (maybe) a dozen people, and that will disappear into the internet-ether in a week or so. Since blogs in general (and comment threads in particular) are NEVER picked up by Google or any search engine, it would be a shame to never be able to find them.
I would like to propose that we make a list of our favorite comments from this thread here, with the hope that Matt/Oreo can put a "best of" comments section on their page.
By right-clicking on the date/timestamp of the comment, you can select the comment "permalink", which will bring outsiders directly to that posting. If you're not sure of how to do this, just post the author/date-time stamp of the comment, and one of us will find it and add it.
With that in mind, here are two comments I would like to nominate for "best of" status. There are a lot of others, but these two from the past 24 hours stick out in my mind:
Aunt Judy, on 08-Sept-08
Minnesota for Obama, on 09-Sept-08
Please nominate other posts that you think we should attempt to preserve. Thanks.
Minnesota,
I am so sorry for what your family has gone thru, and glad your son is home safely. I send a hug to your little grandson. Please let us know how he is doing as time goes on.
When my Dad was in WWII, he got leave to come home when I was born. That was standard practice, I think.
As for preserving posts, and few people seeing them, let me suggest that these posts would make excellent letters to the editor for local newspapers, on the lines of why I am voting for Obama not for McCain. Another way to help stop this madness from continuing.
Minnesota for Obama,
You represent the America to which McSame cannot relate and Palin chooses to ignore. Both behaviors are shameful.
Yesterday, I was a shelter for women and met a 13 year old boy. He recalled when his grandmother had a home in New England but now she, her daughter, and her grandson are homeless - 3 generations.
Your story and this one is what keeps many of us in this fight to stop the Republicans from strip-mining the middle class.
Thanks everyone for your kind words...I am so sure the Repugs have no idea how we, (the ones who survive challenges day to day, living paycheck to paycheck) need hope to believe in a better America! That hope is Obama/Biden 2008
I don't argue with trolls, and normally I don't even read Stop's stuff, but maybe because it was the last post, I saw:
"Obama has the support of Unions, Blacks and Homosexuals!"
I have to say, that is a group I am proud to be associated with.
Everyone please read this article and spread the link to everyone you know.

Wake Up, America! -- The Morning After America's Blind Date with Sarah Palin
Has a huge portion of the American populace gone insane?
Periodically in American history, large numbers of people succumb to mass delusion. We are currently experiencing such a time.
After a Republican National Convention that culminated with one of the worst acceptance speeches in American history, John McCain has gotten a big bump in the polls.
Why? Almost entirely, it seems, because McCain chose as his running-mate someone about whom most Americans know almost nothing, whose views on most of the issues about which Americans care the most are opposite to those of a majority of Americans, whose experience to prepare her for the presidency is so inadequate that the Republican campaign is reduced to mentioning that she belonged to the PTA and that her state is close to Russia.
WTF?
According to a just-released USA Today-Gallup Poll, white women have moved from favoring Barack Obama by 8 points before John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate to backing John McCain by 12 points. Majorities of white women, this poll reports, say his choice of Palin increases their faith in McCain's decisions.
I repeat: WTF?
How far are the American people willing to go on a first, blind date?
Unless McCain has slipped Rohypnol into the drinks he served the electorate last week, newly infatuated and intoxicated voters ought have enough of their wits about them to know they don't want to give themselves up to a candidate with whom they completely disagree:
■ Most Americans want health insurance for everyone.
Sarah Palin opposes it.
■ Most Americans are not biblical literalists.
Sarah Palin is. In spades.
■ Most Americans favor a woman's right to choose in abortion.
Sarah Palin wants to outlaw ALL abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.
■ Most Americans favor environmental protections and understand that global warming is largely caused by human activity.
Sarah Palin doesn't.
■ Most Americans believe the findings of science.
Sarah Palin doesn't.
■ Most Americans do not think Tim LaHaye's "End Times" with millions of non-Christians drowning in rivers of blood while Jesus cheers are upon us.
Sarah Palin does.
■ Most Americans disagree with most of what has happened during the last eight years and with George W. Bush.
Sarah Palin is Bush's more-evil fraternal twin.
Americans need to get out of bed with this candidate, quickly, while their virtue is still intact.
The time has come for us to stop people we meet on the street and ask them, "Are you more likely to vote for the Republican ticket because John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running-mate?"
Every time someone answers, "yes" or "maybe," grab him or her by the shoulders and shake (gently), saying, "Wake up! Do you know anything about her?"
"Unless you are a member of the extreme "Christian" Right, you agree with Sarah Palin on almost nothing and you would be crazy to support her and McCain. (If you are a member of the extreme "Christian" Right, you are crazy, but, unlike most Americans, you are someone who logically should love Palin.)"
----
leah,
Doesn't that show how desparate people are?
Republicans want to stay with their party, even on a blind date.
What do you think will happen when they wake up with a serial killer?
As long as Obama makes sure that they find out before election it will be good.
It is going to be nasty.
jean
Jean - Well my therapy is over now.
Leah - Was thinking of you when I watched the latest storm track update. Looks like it has shifted north to somewhere between Corpus Christi and Houston. I hope it stays south. I wonder if M/P will run to Texas to take charge? The MSM is pondering whether McCain will be able to go solo if Palin goes back to Alaska. You can bet his crowds will go down when the only thing he has to offer them is his stump speech.
World wants Obama as president: poll
People across the world want Obama in the White House, a BBC poll said.
All 22 countries covered in the poll would prefer to see Senator Obama elected US president ahead of Republican John McCain.

Breaking with British convention, Prime Minister Brown announces his backing for Obama:
http://waugh.standard.co.uk/2008/09/brown-backs-oba.html
Excerpt:
-----------------------
Referring to the anxieties facing voters across the globe during the economic slowdown, he says: "Around the world, it is progressive politicians who are grappling with these challenges....In the electrifying US Presidential campaign, it is the Democrats who are generating the ideas to help people through more difficult times. To help prevent people from losing their home, Barack Obama has proposed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund to increase emergency pre-foreclosure counselling, and help families facing repossession."
--------------------------------
Too bad the US voters aren't as smart as the rest of the world. We wouldn't have been in a war that killed a million people including thousands of Americans if were were smarter.
mike-in-ga,
We have all done it and I agree, boy it feels good.
The visits are less and I am sure they are not thrilled with the e-mails.
jean
beryl,
Thanks for the post.
jean
Beryl - I totally agree! However, McCain believes that the American people actually want him to bully the rest of the world and if he does it will help his campaign. It will be nice to see the world work together as allies vs. the continual confrontation we face now.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/09/opinion/09herbert.html
Pat yourself on the back, then get back to work for Obama :-)
Mike-in-GA
Last I heard the storm has shifted and is not headed straight for Houston. I hope no one is hurt but I hope we get looks of rain out of it.
NO McCAIN - NO PALIN
No McGeezer - No Gidget Puppet
Vote - O and Joe '08
I just love it:
We get in first jab, they have to respond, and in doing so we get in another jab. And on top of that they have to waste time responding.
Biden questions GOP disability advocates on stem cell research.
McCain camp says Biden 'sunk to a new low'
Palin refuses to yield on her claim that she opposed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere earmark.
Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'
These folks are shameless.
The McCain campaign accused the Obama team of making misleading claims.
I want more like this but a lot more tougher.
Hi Beryl, it's nice that Gordon Brown is endorsing Obama but to be fair the Labour party just hit a 30 year low in UK opinion polls!

Tyler said...
"Jesus was a community organizer" will work about as well as "Jesus was a liberal". In other words, not very.
Based on what?
The idea is not to win them over that very instant, but to make them stop and think. It's like George Allen's 'Macacca' moment. That comment didn't change anyone's opinion that day, or even that week. When he made that comment, he was up in the polls by at least 20 points over Jim Webb.
However, word started to spread as to what 'Macacca' meant, and people then started to think. Over a period of about 6 weeks, the polls dramatically shifted, and Webb then was in a close race to the end, when he eventually won.
Why the six weeks? It took time for people to understand what Macacca meant. It took time for people to understand where and how Allen learned that word (it's Algerian, his mother's native country). It took time for people to learn that in Algeria, Macacca is the equivalent of the 'n' word in the US. It took time for people to realize the person it was directed at was of Indian ancestry (the country, not Native American). It took time for people to connect all the dots to understand the slur that had been made.
The advantage of the 'Jesus was a community organizer' is that people understand who Jesus is. It doesn't take long to explain what a community organizer is - the words are common every day words in the US.
It won't take much time to get them to understand the sign. Then they will start to have doubts about Palin - "If she is against Jesus, who is she for?" doubts. Once the doubts start, it is much easier to show them other things about Palin that they might not like, and the doubts grow.
If they don't want to vote for Obama (for rascist or other reasons), then they might just stay home. Every vote that McLame(brain) doesn't get is the equivalent of 1 vote that Obama doesn't have to get to win the election.
The sign is not a blunt force message, but a subtle one to get the people to think. If they see it over and over, it will eventually get them to ask "If Jesus was a community organizer, and Palin doesn't like community organizers, why am I thinking of voting for her?" and "If McLame(brain) picked her for his VP candidate, what does that say about him, and his religious views?" and "If he is anti-Christ, do I want to vote for him?" Once they begin to think in that manner, it makes defeating McLame(brain) a lot easier.
The subtle message is how the Repigs win a lot of battles - think 'death tax'. Think 'SOCIAL Security is the creeping edge of socialism'. Except in this case, the message won't take months or years to filter through. And it isn't, on it's face, a direct slur of the Repig candidates.
Mike
Hey Byrl:
Gordon Brown's comments are actually representive from around the world despite the fact that Brown's popularity is in the tank.
Political campaigns in various other countries are nothing like the US. In Canada, the campaings do revolve around the real issues. There is some mud slinging but well above the belt kind of stuff.
When you see people flock to Palin without knowing a thing about her, reminds me of how most Americans supported Bush's call for war against Iraq. The MSM were going at it 24/7. There were a few that actually stood up and objected. I recall quite clearly when our Priminister, Cretien at the time, travelled to the US to personally speak to Bush, about the fact that there was absolutely no evidence for Weapons of Mass Destruction, just prior to the start of the war. But Bush wasn't listenting.
So while Canada supports the war on Terrorism in Afgahnistan with troops (we have now lost 100 good men and women), we did not provide any support for the war on Iraq.
Bush was real mad at us about that.

Good Job Aunt Jean!
Hi Dave
I couldn't let my chance go by. LOL. How are you today? I just got home. Tomorrow I have a doc. appt. I do believe my gall bladder is acting up. the doc. wanted to remove it 5 years ago but I keep putting it off I guess I won't be able to put it off much longer. AJ
Leah
we are still in the cone plus when it hits land it's forcasted to go straight up. I'm praying that it will not hit here.
To who ever said that they were thinking about Leah and hurrican Ike we don't live but about 7 or 8 miles from each other. AJ
AJ, good luck with your Dr. appointment.
I'm doing well. School is going well so far.
You, Leah, and ALL others in the Gulf Coast region, STAY SAFE! Yes, this includes our resident ASSHOLE!
Just to be helpful, here is a something to help Sarah rock her newborn babe to sleep...
Rock-a-by Sarah, you think you're on top
You speak of a bridge that you claim you stopped
When the lies that you've woven start to unroll
Down go you and Johnny, poll after poll.
Aunt Jean - Didn't realize you were near Houston but I hope all of you end up just getting rain you need and not the hurricane damage or tornados.
Jean - It is funny how after my therapy I am able to bypass that crap and then PUFF -it is gone like magic and I don't have to read it again. The crew does do a great job:).
I have heard Senator Obama's surrogates say he will give a tax cut to 95% of all Americans. I would suggest like others on DCW have said the last few nights - say it short and sweet for those in the electorate that only listen to sound bites - IF YOU MAKE LESS THAN $250,000 - U WILL GET A TAX CUT. Another way would be to ask the question: "Do you make less than $250,000? If so, then YOU WILL GET A TAX BREAK and I will not increase your taxes."
just fyi, I looked at the latest RealClearPolitics poll, the one done in conjunction with the WSJ:
Obama +1
short bounce! I think people are waking up and smelling the coffee.
LOL AJ! Not anymore! Our clean-up crew came through and took out the trash.....LOL
Dave
oh what a relief it is fizz fizz. [on the troll] AJ LOL LOL LOL
HERE is a good explanation of what is going on with the polls.
Methodology......
I'd much rather have the troll gone and not have the chant at the top of the page ;)
One thing that I personally think Obama should pound home is that JM has stated that "He will follow Bin Laden to the 'gates of hell', and that he "knows how to win wars". Right?
Well keep pounding the fact that Bin Laden is still out and about, and roaming around. His line about not following Bin Laden to his cave was a great line. But at the same time he should also say that if JM knows how to win a war, then he needs to meet with GW to teach him how to win a war, because everyone knows that dubya AIN'T gettin' it done!
Wow! I just saw a touching story on Headline News. It is call "Honor Flights". The program takes WWII veterans who thought they would never see thier WWII Monument and flys them out to Washington at no cost. They have also started to take Korean and Vietnam vets who have terminal illnesses to see thier monuments. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the politics of the day that it is refreshing to see programs such as this one. I know that this is not directly related to politics - but sometimes it is nice to see that someone cares for our vets and others in need and that they are willing to do something exceptional for them. I'd be interested in hearing more about other programs and stories that help people in need. I've heard of Make A Wish, McDonald House, Soldier Support Program and many others. Maybe this sounds corny to some of you - but I enjoy seeing the good things we do in America and maybe it would give our politicians a chance to show how much they care. Wouldn't things like this be a good way to highlight things that Democrats are doing for its citizens? I'm even going to post this on Barack Obama's website and suggest that he institute or support something like this for himself and his fellow Democrats - When they have an empty seat - use it to help support "Honor Flights" or "Make a Wish". No better way to show the electorate that you care and are willing to do more than just talk like Senator McCain and the Republicans.
It was good to hear Rendell's comments against Palin.
Mike in Ga
That sounds like such a great idea!
AJ
Suz
I haven't heard what Rendell said where did you read it? I would really like to read it. AJ
AJ,here you go.
It was REALLY good!
AJ - Thanks for the comment! I just posted it to the BarackObama.com website blog and also sent it as a message to Michelle Obama. I've always believed that "Actions speak louder than words and also win more votes". Can you imagine the positive publicity it could generate for Senator Obama or Senator Biden with all the reporters on the plane. But most of all - it would help someone in need and promote a great cause. I also suggested that they have a section on his website that is called "Helping America Today" and post all the good things the Campaign and the Democrats do everyday.
Mike in Ga - that is a really great story. Instead of just putting it on Obama's blog, I would suggest e-mailing them directly via contact us. You will get an "automated" reply, but they do have people reading them.
Maybe Matt or Oreo could do something like that on DCW. It could be called "Helping America Today" and post all the good stories the Campaign and the Democrats do everyday. I know whenever I have seen interesting posts on here that I copy them and share them with friends and even skeptical friends to show them that liberals and moderates are not all bad and they have some great ideas.
AJ, it was absolutely correct and best thing that could happen. I think ALL Democratic governors should be coming out and echoing his statements about impeachment. This would include but NOT be limited to Sebelius, Napolitano, Bill Richardson, etc. I think Schwartzenegger might even be willing to go that far.
Mike In Ga.
you're welcome. AJ
Dave thanks so much for the link I really loved what Rendell said. I just hope people are listening and stop and think about all the lies that Palin has already told. AJ
i v dave-I have to say, I have understood some of Ahnuld's explanations of the decisions he's made in the past. What's your take on the recall effort?
Even though they are also citizens, I'm not too quick to jump on a celebrity's political bandwagon.
Check out THIS photograph.
Tell me what's wrong with the picture. - And THIS picture is taken directly from the ALASKA's website, from their gov.state.ak.us website. (just look at the address bar when you click on the link).
Dave
you are right about more govs. need to come out and tell the truth about Palins lies that she has told. I just don't get it though why people need to have it push in thei face. Why they can't see it for themselves.
Are people really that foolish. I guess they are they put Bush in there for 8 years. He didn't do crap the first 4 years what made them think that he would do something the next 4 years. Until my dying days I will never understand that.
I was talking to my brouther in law the other night and he still likes Bush. He also likes McLame/Palin. He honestly believes that if something happens to McLame that she would make a good President. He also said that Palin has a lot more experience that Hillary and Obama put together.Needless to say it pissed me off. I told him DON'Teven go there if you are foolish enough to vote for that lying bit## go ahead but everyones not that stupid.
Needless to say I left!! AJ
Good luck, Aunt Jean. The older I get, the more I see the value in sometimes postponing stuff doctors suggest :-) You got at least a five year reprieve.
I hope Ike is nothing. I was worried about hanna, but she turned out to be nothing.
i v dave-When was it taken?
aunt jean-Just think how cute your belly button will be, especially if you get it pierced after the surgery. ;) I'm the only female in my family who still has my gall bladder. People don't realize why I'm so careful about what I eat and when. I think it's made the difference so far. Good luck.
Dave - thanks for the suggestion - I just went back and did what you suggested.
I'm also going to tell you something that I'm not sure is appropriate here but here goes anyhow. I have watched your postings over the last 4-5 months and you have opened my eyes and helped me overcome a stereo-type that I had when I was a die-hard Republican. You made me realize that gays are ordinary people that have great ideas and thoughts on many more things than just gay rights. As little as a year ago - I would never have looked at it this way. I enjoy some of the stories you share about Bill and you and hope he is doing well. Thanks for being you!
Suzi,
As far as Arnold, he has done a "decent" job in relative terms. He is working with an out of control legislative branch (majority made up of Democrats.)
I was totally against the recall of Gray Davis simply because he had done nothing illegal. I firmly believe that recall campaigns should ONLY be left for illegal activity. Unfortunately Gray Davis was stuck with a lot of problems left by his Republican predecessor Pete Wilson.
If the recall campaign is successful against Arnold (and placed on the ballot) I would vote against it. We are facing a $15 Billion shortfall and neither party seems willing to budge - EXCEPT for Arnold. He has been willing to compromise, but the Republicans in the legislative branch have refused, and so have the Dems. So to me it is more the legislative branch that is screwing things up, NOT Arnold.
The only problem that I really have with Arnold is that he has cut the education budget here in CA, everything else, he's in favor of same-sex marriage, he's in favor of environmental protections, he's pro-choice, etc. The recall campaign is being led by the prison union (can't remember if it is the prison guard union or what). I don't think he is necessarily anti-union, I think he, like myself, simply believes that unions have pretty much run their course. Now granted there are some cases where unions are a good thing, but I also think that if we had some form of universal healthcare coverage, then the free market should be able to take care of the rest. (Does that last part make sense?)

I've been cut on so much out of need to. That I'm not looking forward to it. Not only that when they put me to sleep I don't breathe very well. Plus my blood pressure drops very very low. One time you might as well say I coded after surgery my blood pressure went to 30 over palpate. Needless to say when I woke up there was several nurses in the room with me. AJ
iv,
I give up:-) What am I suppose to be seeing?
1. A flat tummy at the wrong time?
2. Tasteless earrings with a parka?
3. A bored kid dragged along to some event?
AJ, yikes. The anesthesiologist has to know about all this, right, if you have anything else done...
Aunt Jean - you'll do fine. I had mine removed about 10 years ago and all they made was 3-4 small holes and it was over. Didn't take very long to complete. Much better than I remember when they had to do large cuts like in the past. Besides, from what I have watched for many months on this blog - you are a pretty tough lady.:) It would take more than that to keep you down.
mike in ga-I don't know who the person is that spoke this-
Each person has an ideal, a hope, a dream which represents the soul. We must give to it the warmth of love, the light of understanding and the essence of encouragement.

This has been a rewarding blog for me also. It seems like such a small world in middle TN. To have been able to reach out and exchange philosophies with people even when we don't agree has opened my mind more than I could have expected.

I have a weird body I don't know if it's because I'm a twin or what. My twin reacts the exact opposite of me. I had back surgery here in April 99 well they gave me celbrex in Feb.2002 by oct.of the same year they told me that if I didn't have a liver transplant like yesterday that I was going to die. My liver was only working at 5% needless to say I was along and sick as a dog. I could barely keep a sip of water down.
Come to find out I am one of the rare [second] case in US that celbrex affects their liver. I can't even take antibodies because they make me sick as a dog [any kind] and there is a lot more meds that make me sick. So needless to say I'm very careful about what I put in my mouth. AJ
