Hey Independent Voter? Guess what I have? Palin's email screen grabs. I think the link should still work. When I first heard about it, I googled it, then saved the link to my favorites. Let's see if it still works.

WOW! Now THIS is funny. Fox News is now referring to the McCain/Palin ticket as McPalin.

Somebody help me understand this campaign financing laws.

Obama has not accepted public funding, so he can raise what he wants.

But what is the limitations for McCain?

He took public financing. This means he takes in 84 million, can not take private funding, and can only put in 50,000 of his own money. (I believe). But then in reading more, it says the gov will match up to 250 from a donor. This is all very confusing to me.

Now if I look at some of these sights that shows where the money is, it shows McCain has raised about 180,000,000 and has cash on hand of about 30,000,000.

So does he have limitations on how much he can raise? How much of this cash on hand is already given to him by the Gov?

Bottom Line: Is there a max on how much McCain can raise, where is he at now.....

He has been really hitting the airwaves trying to get Obama to have weekly town-halls. I.E. no cost publicity. I would like to track poll movements vs his financials.

Kujo, He was given $84 Million at the conclusion of the Republican Convention. He has that money to spend between the conclusion of the convention to November 3rd.

ANY money he raised before and during the convention had to be spent prior to the conclusion.

ANY money he raised from the conclusion MUST go to either down ticket candidates OR directly to the RNC, RCCC, or other outside groups.

He is however allowed to raise money FOR his campaign, however that money MUST be set aside and cannot be used for campaign expenses EXCEPT for legal expenses. So the attorneys that are working on sweeping the Palin stuff under the rug in Alaska can be taken out of that "legal expense" account.

And btw Kujo, Obama is allowed to collect as much as he wants/can, HOWEVER he is still limited to maximum donations of $2300.

Kujo said...

Ok more on McCain finances.

He can keep what he raised before the convention. So can I assume he raised 180 (ish) before the convention and he has 33 + 84 left to spend? or Does he only have 33 left to spend. I believe it would be 33 + 84 because when I look at the

My source is:

www.opensecrets.org

(Of course the RNC can spend as well as the Swiftboaters).

It does read that his campaign is returning checks and asking them to resubmit to a fund to pay for legal and accounting expenses nessessary to comply with the public financing system (I don't think this means Palins problems)

So it begs me to wonder when I read that McCain raised so much money since Palin and her Convention speach.

Kujo said...

Also,

I don't understand how Obama raised 11 million at a dinner if people could only donate 2,300.

lets see
10 people 23,000
100 people 230,000
1000 people 2,300,000
5000 people 11,500,000

I guess that is doable... but it said that it was 28,300 (around) per plate. Hmmm That would be 2,300 donation:
1,000 food
24,000 one hell of a bottle of wine

Is there something about the campaign finance law that says you can give more then 2,300 if in return you get food?

tmess2 said...

Kujo, for FEC financing, there are two phases.

Phase 1 is the Primary. During the primary, a candidate can choose to accept "matching funds." A candidate becomes eligible to receive matching funds when he/she has received a certain level of eligible contributions (up to $250 per donor). Accepting matching funds limits a candidate to a certain level of spending (excluding fundraising and compliance costs).

If you do not accept matching funds, you can raise and spend any amount of money for the primary election (which ends when you accept the nomination).

Phase 2 is the general election. If you accept government funding, it is a full $84 million (at least for the two major parties) and you can only raise funds to cover compliance costs. If you accept government funding, you can't use any funds raised for the primary after you accept your party's nomination.(As noted in an earlier post, a candidate accepting public funding does not place limits on the national committee of his/her party.)

tmess2 said...

If it was $28,000 a plate (big if), that would be the maximum donation to Obama plus the maximum donation to the DNC.

Kujo said...

tmess2,

yes but what if I donated to McCain

scratch that

spit
spit
spit

What if I donated to some candidate during the primary and I donated 4,600 at that time. 2,300 for Primary and 2,300 for GE.

Then the candidate decides for public financing.

Can this candidate use the money previously collected for the GE

I think this would be McCains 180,000 with 33,000 remaining. I also think the numbers I am looking at must be July numbers because Aug numbers are not yet (or just past).

So if McCain could take donated money up until he accepts the nomination, then he would have 180 + aug + a little of sept + 84

(What did he raise in Aug... around 44?)

I would really like to know what is his spending potential compared to Obama's

Kujo said...

28,500 per plate

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/17/obama-raises-11-million-in-hollywood/?iref=werecommend

if 28,000 is the total of the 2, 500 must been for the food and drinks

So if you already gave a to Obama's campaign, you were not invited :(

Kujo said...

I also read that McCain raised 4 million a few nights before in Miami

must been all to the RNC

tmess2 said...

Kujo, most of the answers could be easily found at the FEC web site.

You can give a candidate (whether for President or Congress) $4,600. If you do, that candidate has to segregate the second %2,300 to a separate account for the general. If they lose the primary or (for president) accept public financing, they have to return the second $2,300 to you.

tmess2 said...

Spending potential for both candidates is unlimited since it is only mid-september and you have the $84 million for McCain plus what the RNC has on hand plus what right to life, nra, chamber of commerce, associated industries, and all the 527s have to spend plus what they can raise in the next 40 days against whatever Obama and the DNC has on hand and what Obama can raise.

Kujo said...

tmess2,

Thanks. I did not know the part of them having to return it to me. That makes sense. I do realize that they can still raise money into these other organizations, but many ordinary people will be looking to "Give to the Candidate" and not be as excited to an organization.

Also, I would Assume that McCain was not spending GE money before the Convention. So I see it this way:

180,000,000 donations
30,000,000 cash on hand

he spend 150,000,000. Since these sites do not split the primary money with the GE money, I would bet McCain received a fair amount of 4,600 donations. If he had more then 30,000,000 GE, then he would have to remove some of the 84,000,000 to pay this money.

Example:

raises 180
Primary 110
GE 70
Cash Remaining 30
Spent 150
Public Financing 84

Here he would spend 40 more then he earned for the Primary. So he would have to return 70 and be 40 in dept. When he receive his public financing, he would only have 44 million.

So it would be interesting to see the numbers.

Mike in Maryland said...

Kujo,

Your scenario could happen, IF the candidate wants to risk an investigation by the FEC.

When the funds are collected, the (major party) campaign is required to segregate the money for the primaries from the money given for the general election. The (major party) candidate cannot legally touch the money for the general election until after he/she accepts the party's nomination.

At the time they accept the party's nomination, any money left over from the primary cannot be used in the general election campaign. That money can be given to another candidate's political campaign, or given to a political action committee, or to a party's National Committee, or to a party's Congressional Campaign Committee, or to a party's Senatorial Campaign Committee. If the funds were not from the federal government, then the candidate can keep the funds for another campaign for the same office.

If a candidate runs a deficit in the Primary, then they can either make arrangements with the people to whom they owe money to forgive the debt (although that means the forgiven debt counts as a campaign donation, with the $2300 cap), and/or raise funds (sometimes for years, ala John Glenn) to repay the debt. No candidate can use General Election funds to pay off Primary Election debts, unless they want to undergo an FEC probe.

I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler
by Tom Paxton

Oh the price of gold is rising out of sight
And the dollar is in sorry shape tonight
What the dollar used to get us
Now won't buy a head of lettuce
No the economic forecast isn't right
But amidst the clouds I spot a shining ray

I can even glimpse a new and better way
And I've demised a plan of action
Worked it down to the last fraction
And I'm going into action here today

CHORUS:
I am changing my name to Chrysler
I am going down to Washington D.C.
I will tell some power broker [guy from Treasury]
What they did for Iacocca [Fan and Freddie]
Will be perfectly acceptable to me
I am changing my name to Chrysler
I am headed for that great receiving line
So when they hand a million grand out
I'll be standing with my hand out
Yes sire I'll get mine

When my creditors are screaming for their dough
I'll be proud to tell them all where they can all go
They won't have to scream and holler
They'll be paid to the last dollar
Where the endless streams of money seem to flow
I'll be glad to tell them what they can do
It's a matter of a simple form or two
It's not just renumeration it's a liberal education
Ain't you kind of glad that I'm in debt to you

CHORUS

Since the first amphibians crawled out of the slime
We've been struggling in an unrelenting climb
We were hardly up and walking before money started talking
And it's sad that failure is an awful crime
Well it's been that way for a millenium or two
But now it seems that there's a different point of view
If you're a corporate titanic and your failure is gigantic
Down to congress there's a safety net for you

McPalin forgets where Spain is.

Here's the link and transcript.

http://cdn.libsyn.com/americablog/mccainspainenglish.mp3?nvb=20080918

QUESTION: Senator, finally, let's talk about Spain. If you're elected president, would you be willing to invite President Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero to the White House to meet with you?

MCCAIN: I would be willing meet, uh, with those leaders who our friends [sic] and want to work with us in a cooperative fashion, and by the way, President Calderon of Mexico is fighting a very very tough fight against the drug cartels. I'm glad we are now working in cooperation with the Mexican government on the Merida plan. I intend to move forward with relations, and invite as many of them as I can, those leaders, to the White House.

QUESTION: Would that invitation be extended to the Zapatero government, to the president itself?

MCCAIN: I don't, you know, honestly I have to look at relations and the situations and the priorities, but I can assure you I will establish closer relations with our friends and I will stand up to those who want to do harm to the United States of America.

QUESTION: So you have to wait and see if he's willing to meet with you, or you'll be able to do it in the White House?

MCCAIN: Well again I don't, all I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere that are
friends with us, and standing up to those who are not, and that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America, and the entire region.

QUESTION: Okay... what about you, I'm talking about the President of Spain?

MCCAIN: What about me what?

QUESTION: Okay... are you willing to meet with him if you are elected president?

MCCAIN: I am willing to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for human rights,
democracy and freedom, and I will stand up to those that do not.

Hey Jean, I think James Carville is right: September 15 will go down as the day that MconomyIsSound lost the election and at the end it won't be that close. If the economy stays the #1 issue the gap between the two campaigns will grow in the Dems favor. Can you see the debate questions to McCain about regulation/deregulation? There is just no way to finesse his record.

Plus, if the Dems will just start talking about "A New Deal for America...." I saw some responses to a CNN question that were referring to the New Deal of the 30s, so there are definitely people out there thinking about it.

You know, I think about the impact of those New Deal programs in the South (Tennessee Valley Authority, rural electrification, etc.) and I think there would be a real boost for Obama in some of those states by recalling those times and promising to make a new "New Deal".

Bad news / good news at Pollster.com:

Bad news is that the site is now predicting that McLame(brain) has 208 EC votes and Senator Obama has 202. They also are stating that the polls indicate that Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Colorado are toss-ups.

Good news is that they also state that New Mexico is now for Obama, but also classify Indiana, West Virginia, Virginia, Montana and Nevada as toss-ups.

I don't think McLame(brain) will be able to win in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota or Wisonsin. The site also has Florida as a McLame(brain) state, but the latest polls I've seen show it to be within the margin of error, so it should be a toss-up.

Also, one of the most conservative papers in the state of Indiana (Indianapolis Star) released a poll yesterday showing Senator Obama has a three point lead in Indiana. Since Indiana has not voted for the Dem candidate since 1964, that is GREAT news that it is not safely in the Rep column at this late date.

The pollster.com site averages up to the latest 8 polls in each state. Since the state polls lag the national daily tracking polls, and with the daily polls showing McLame(brain) trending down while Senator Obama is holding steady or trending slightly up, I don't put a lot of trust in Pollster.com's predictive ability right now.

Jean,

Yes, according to pollster.com, West Virginia is a toss-up state. The site says that McLame(brain) has a 3.6% polling lead in West Virginia.

http://pollster.com

BUT, there seems to be very little rhyme or reason to the way pollster.com decides which states are leaning one way or the other, or is a toss-up state.

For instance, it shows Wisconsin as toss-up with the polls showing Obama up by 4.6%, and shows Florida as McLame(brain)-lean with a 4.1% lead. IMO, if a 4.6% lead means 'toss-up', then a 4.1% lead should also be a 'toss-up'.

McCains = Bush = McSame = McSpain

McCain camp today has come out defending McCains latest Spain flap as saying McCain new what he was saying and stands by his remarks.

After thinking about, I agree. He really did mean what he was saying.

Spain, an ally, went throug a leadership change. The people had been upset with the war in Iraq and that the previous leader supported G. W. Bush.

McCain when asked if he would invite the current Spanish leader for a visit to the White House, deflected the answer and said it he will speak with friends and will not speak with the enemy. He did this repeatedly, even when it was explained who the reporter was speaking of.

McCain = Bush

This is the exact policy of Bush. If you don't do exactly what I say, you are now an enemy to us. He can not even come to grips with the fact that some of our Ally's might have different view points then us.

We in a world that is closing in on us. More countries are turning there head away from the US. We are losing our economic powers, we are losing our ally's.

We have put the blame to much on Bush for all these problems we have. Yes you heard me right. It was the American people who voted him in, not once but twice. Lets not do it a third time.

Mike in Maryland said...

Jean,

I did some more research and reading at pollster. The University of Wisconsin-Madison released a series of polls of the 'Big Ten states' (MN, WI, IA, IL, IN, MI, OH and PA). The poll for Illinois is Obama 53, McCain 37 (believable, but maybe a little low for Obama), but it also shows Iowa: tied at 45; Indiana: McCain 47, Obama 43; Michigan: Obama 48, McCain 44; Minnesota: Obama 47, McCain 45; Ohio: Obama 46, McCain 45; Pennsylvania; Obama 45, McCain 45; and Wisconsin: Obama 45, McCain 44.

Except, the UofW pollsters got something wrong: In all states, they oversampled men, undersampled women, and undersampled AAs according to 2004 exit polls. In most states, they also undersampled voters aged 18-29, and they oversampled Repigs in almost all states.

An example:
In Wisconsin, the poll shows:
50% men / 50% women
18-29: 12%
African-Americans: 3%

2004 WI exit poll:

47% men / 53% women
18-29: 20%
African-Americans: 5%

Change the internals to much closer reflect the 2004 exit polls (which are suspect for this year), and you get a 2-4 point bump for Obama in each state. As for the 'suspect' I spoke of, who thinks that the per cent of AAs will be down this year? IMO, that per cent will be up significantly.

Who thinks the per cent of 18-29 YOs will be down this year? IMO, that per cent will be up significantly.

Who thinks there will be a dramatic shift in the gender of the voting electorate this year? Not me.

You got that right, Jean. They didn't take into account ANY data that was pertinent, such as the ratio of gender in the voting; historical per cent of AAs voting; ignoring the historical per cent of 18-29s; not reflecting the per cent of registered Repigs and Dems in the various states; etc.

When you overrepresent men (who favor McLame(brain) by a small margin); underrepresent women (who favor Senator Obama by a small margin); and underrepresent AAs (who overwhelmingly favor Senator Obama), where do you think the results will end up?

So it was not a mistake that McCain aluded to Latin American countries as his example of what he would do to friendly countries.

This is my biggest reason of Supporting Obama over McCain. Foriegn policy. McCain has no tack when it comes to personal relationships with foriegn leaders. We see him lose is temper in the Senate constantly. Anyone who has a different opinion them him is an idiot.

Sometimes people hate how Obama hesitates when he speaks. I love it. It shows me that he is thinking and won't get us into another war without good reason. McCain was right when he said that Obama "chooses his words carefully". That is admirable, IMO. Neither McCain nor Palin has demonstrated this capacity.

McCain is not just wrong for America, he is DANGEROUS.

Vicki in Seattle said...

Do you really think he writes his own speeches?

The comment to the Spanish journalist was off the cuff but the other comments came from speech writers, IMO. He has an incompetent staff of "good ole boys".

Over on HuffPo, They have the story about Palin saying "Biden was elected when I was like, in second grade" (or something to that affect - yes the word "like" was in there.)

Anyway, someone posted a comment that stated Hahaha. Palin, you're running mate even has a single digit soc. security number. This is getting more hilarious, keep 'em coming Palin so we'll keep laughing at you.

Independent Voter said...

Vicki, one thing that really pissed me off earlier is that David Gregory (Race for the White House) and Chris Matthews (Hardball) BOTH said that McCain would fire the SEC Chairman and let McCain's people RUN with that claim. I sent an e-mail to MSNBC, KO and Rachel Maddow to ask them to correct the record that the president wouldn't have the authority to fire the chairman of ANY independent regulatory agency.

I did notice that KO and Rachel DID set the record straight. Hopefully DG and CM will correct THEIR mistakes tomorrow.

I am kinda of looking forward to the debates and also not. Not because I really don't think the formats for the debates really provide the public with any value.

Also, after the debates are over the experts usually don't add any value.

Also, the spin doctors that will bin on for the next 4 days will not add any value......

I think if we had a debate like the mini one we had about a month ago (each took questions at different times, Obama first, McCain second after hearing all the questions) was a really good format. This time though I would pic a moderator that actually knows the subjects that are crucial for this election with detail knowledge of where the candidate really stand on these issues so if they lie, it would be stopped at that point.

Kujo, I agree with you on the debates. I just can't wait for Obama to clean McShrub's clock!

Something that I think should be determined ahead of time is that if a candidate raises an issue that revolves around the topic at hand that may raise further questions (like a McShrub LIE) then the moderators should ask further questions immediately, and NOT just let the LIE go unchallenged.

In addition, I don't like the whole 60 second 30 second rule (or whatever they have). If a question takes longer than 60 seconds to answer then the candidate should be given as much time as necessary. Rebuttals should be granted at least a minute, and the candidates should be able to ask questions of the other during that time rebuttal period.

If a candidate tries to interrupt the other while they are speaking, their mic is cut immediately and they are penalized 30 seconds. hehehehehe (that is specifically aimed at McShrub because we ALL know the man would blow a gasket.

I truely think this McSpain comment is the type of subject matter that should be debated. The problem is that we don't want to distract the subject of the economy right now.

Like in the movie, a Few Good Men, I think this is an issue the McSpain would explode on and not realize how he would come across.

Here is a potential McSpain Quote:

Ms., we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna invite Prime Minister Zapatero to the White House? You? You, your just a reporter! I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Zapatero because he can not come to the White House; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Zapater not coming to the White House while tragic, probably saved lives and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, it saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. I use words like honor, code, loyalty. I use them as the backbone of a life trying to defend Oil Companies. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a woman who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then the question Why can't Prim Minister Zapatero come to dinner at the White House. I would rather you just said "thank you," and let Prime Minister Zapatero go eat in France.

Vicki,

Being a man I am not sure how that would play out during the VP debates.

But regardless, from what I can see I don't think Palin has the ability to feel anyway (see notes).

note 1: Doesn't seem to take care of her family. Son is on crack, vandalizes and has friends steal for him. Daughter out getting pregnant, Yelling at her telling her to leave the house (I can see her saying "Look what you've done to my career").

note 2: Shoots moose for the fun of it. Opened up hunting on wolves on false pretense.

note 3: Lets not forget about the Polabears. (As long as there are two we don't have to worry)

note 4: After breaking her water, waits the rest of the day, gives a long speech, and flies back to Alaska to give birth. While anyone knows that you don't fly in the 3rd trimester, nor move after your water is broken.

Bob in Vancouver said...

Independant Voter from a distant observer.

Yes you are right, last week I overreacted. It's an enormous relief though to see the polls return to what they were, and to see Obama on the offensive.

You see when the press were going wild about Palin just after the convention, I nearly shit a brick, because we up here in Canada have no say whatsoever, and we are totally dependant on the American pulic comming to their senses. It started to look like the masses were going to be fooled once again.

I have now seen a McCain/Palin Town Hall Meeting from end to end, but is it just me or does Palin's nattering and screaching, get on your nerves as they do mine?

The other observation is that her warm up sounds so amaturish, almost high school level hype when the home team is going off to a basketball competition. Lots of slurs, lies and inuendos with a grin. But as William Shakespear said "grin grin grin, but still a cad is he."

Bottom line is I have lost my bet. I figured McCain would have to drop her from the ticket because she was such a disaster. My opinion now is that the longer she's in the public eye with all her baggage, the better it is for the Democrats.

Independent Voter said...

Bob, no worries.

It still isn't over. I know that it is bad for me to say (what I'm about to say about the stock market) and in a way I don't really mean this, but in another way I do.

Remember a few years back when Enron execs were saying "burn baby burn" when we were having all those wildfires here in CA - I think it was 2000 & 2001 when we had all the rolling blackouts and Enron was price gouging us? Well I'm saying the same thing about the stock market. (Sorry Jean, NO OFFENSE!)

The longer Palin stays in the public eye....I agree with you the better it is for the Democrats. I also believe that the longer the stock markets remain in turmoil the better it is for the Democrats. I just don't want it to drop so much that it really hurts ordinary citizens like Jean, etc. I could care less if it hurts people like Donald Trump (the asshole that he is).

Bob in Vancouver said...

I understand that in the US the media has a bit of responsibility for providing tit-for-tat in their news stories when it comes to political campaigns. For example if there is a story of one candidate broadcasting a negative add, then they are pretty much obliged to point out the the other side is doing more-or-less the same.

But I am really wondering about these polls. Is it in the medias interest continually report that the contests, both nationally and state wise, are essentially neck and neck. Beause the way I see it there are several polls out there, even on each state, that can be reported, any way you want to the results to sound.

Bob in Vancouver said...

Independant Voter:

Thanx for the kind words. I agree that the financial down turn could very well be a game changer for the Democrats, provided it last for a few more weeks. But don't worry, it will rebound. Just leave your money where it is. You only crystalize a loss if you sell now.

And all the electricity shortages in California which forced the price of energy through the roof, was all Enron's manipulation. There was no true shortage at all. They shut down power plants and held the state at randsom, and would only turn them back on when the state agreed to their prices.

Bob in Vancouver said...

One last thought before I go to bed.

Now that McCain has gone negative with his ads, depite his original promise not to; and now that he has gone further, and resorted to lies in his advertising; and further, now that he has actually gone to perversion in one ad, concerning sex education in primary schools, where does he go from here.

The way I see it, his next approach has got to be racist. I hope that the Obama campaign is ready for that one.

Independent Voter said...

Bob, we pulled out of the stock market a little over a year ago now and put everything in cd's. We sold at a really good time. One of our cd's is maturing next week so we will probably be buying some stocks that are relatively stable but have somewhat declined over the past couple weeks (obviously it depends on how low they go).

Independent Voter said...

Bob, I don't necessarily think the ads will be blatant racist, but I definitely see McShrub putting out ads with racist undertones. I can see ads depicting Obama as "uppity", or pulling Rev. Wright back into the picture etc.

I have the feeling that the Keating 5 will be making appearances soon throughout the news coverage. I noticed that Paul Begala, (can't remember if it was Keith Olberman or Chris Matthews) who brought it up today, but I can see the ads coming now.

Good night all - still keeping Leah, AJ, and our other Southern State allies in my thoughts.

tmess2 said...

think Begala was on Rachel who also put up a list of Republicans who have declined to come on her show (afraid of having to answer questions perhaps).

The media will spin the polls to make the race seem closer as needs to be done. (I am getting very tired of CNN's attempts to appear fair and neutral. There is a difference between blurring the tenses on McCain's staff -- not noting that they are technically not currently lobbying while working for the campaign though they have lobbied in the past -- and repeating things that are 100% untrue like claiming that Governor Palin never asked for earmarks or that Obama has no foreign policy experience (ignoring that he serves on the foreign relations committee).

Joshua said...

Let’s face it; we are pathetic for a nation. It amazes me that we have remained the world superpower. The rest of the world must be bungling idiots. Case in point: McCain is competitive with Obama. Obama has demonstrated superior judgment before and during this campaign. Yet there is no guarantee that he will win. And he is up against McCain who thinks that Iran (Persia) is in bed with Al Quaeda (Arab). McCain does not know the difference between Shia and Sunni. McCain thinks that Iraq and Pakistan share a common border. McCain announced that “we are all Georgians” simply because Georgia has him bought and paid for. His running mate wants to invade Russia if they don’t cooperate with us. McCain thinks that Spain is next to Mexico (they both speak Spanish, who cares about geography. After all when you graduate 595th out of 599 who cares about books).

And foreign policy is his strong suit.

Yesterday he thinks that the president can fire the SEC chairman. Today he confuses the FEC with the SEC. Where is Lieberman to put more words into his mouth; because this man is demonstrating that he is not just out of touch, he is senile and has dementia. Yet there are at least 46% of Americans who will vote for him.

On my way into work, I heard my first McCain-Palin (or is that Palin-McCain according to the Governor)/RNC ad.

It talked about McCain as the change candidate using the issue of stem cells and talking about how McCain and his "congressional allies" will expand stem cell research.

Aside from wanting to buy air time for this ad on all the Christian Radio stations, what ticked me off is the use of "congressional allies" instead of Democrats because he has almost no Republican allies on this issue.

Simpler solution, for folks who want to increase stem cell research is vote the Democratic ticket with McCain as the Republican Senator making the proposal bi-partisan.

Doug said...

What the???? Just saw part of a MSNBC interview of Bill Clinton commenting favorably about Palin. Is Bill smitten?

Ruby in Kansas said...

Thanks Doug. I was really scratching my head on this, because the idea of an African American holding a sign that had KKK on it was mind boggling to me. So I did a little research and came across this comment:

"The political parties today have not always represented the ideals that they represent today. For example, the Republicans in Lincoln's time were the anti-slavery party. So...back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the Democratic party controlled most of the South.

Fastforward to the 1960's. The Democrats became the party of inclusion and civil rights with the forward thinking initiatives of the Kennedy/Johnson administrations. LBJ's Voting Rights Act of 1965 which attempted to give African Americans their fair share in the political process drove most of the racist Southern politicians to the Republican party. Which welcomed them with open arms, by the way."

So now I see the light a little bit.
My next beef is this. I wonder, by some chance, were they paid and planted at that rally by a particular politcal party that opposes the Democrat party? Makes you wonder.

Doug said...

Ruby, it does make you wonder. I am sure there is a story to be told there. As an antidote, I can offer you this youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al_y3g77ZsA

The video is an indictment of the Republican convention and its "exclusiveness". It covers the territory from Joe Leiberman to Cindy to John to Sarah. The last 45 seconds of it is fantastic, and I won't spoil it by describing it.

Cheers

Independent Voter said...

LOL Vicki!

My mother tried saying the same thing. (About it being easy to donate online to McCain). I DID have the heart to tell her we've been donating for months.

Of course, my mother is a SINGLE-issue voter. No matter what, if a candidate is pro-choice, she is against them. She use to work/volunteer for a hotline that talked women out of having abortions. She claimed to have stopped hundreds of women from going through with it. My question was to her, "how many of those women did you follow-up with AFTER they had the baby? How many of them did you help take care of the baby after it was born? How many did you find a safe stable home once it was born? How many of those children did you take in because they couldn't afford to keep it?"

EVERY answer was I didn't. My response was, how do you know those kids have had a quality life? How do you know the kids haven't been abused? How do you know they found homes? How do you know anything about these kids? Same response, I don't.

I tried explaining to her that we NEED comprehensive sex education and not this nonsense abstinence-only education and she said that wouldn't stop abortions, I said NO it wouldn't eliminate them, but as statistics have proven, it does reduce the number of them. In addition, banning them altogether wouldn't stop the practice either, women would just go underground and continue to have them, but under those circumstances they are much more dangerous. Her response? So, if they die they deserve it. HYPOCRITES ALL of them I'm telling you.

Vicki in Seattle said...

Take it from me she is very much like Sarah Palin. Good looking and very pushy.

Yes, I'm sorry to say my daughter is a real vindictive bitch, and I would hate to be one of her employees. She holds a grudge longer than Mathusela, and I'm sure she stays up at night thinking of ways to screw anyone who crosses her.

I don't think she is that happy a person, since it is always this person or that person, who she is after.

I don't know how she got like she is and I don't see her frequently, but when I do, I stay on very neutral territory in any conversation. She is very fast in a quick and cutting comeback. She's very opinionated, and can be a very nasty person.

She would be perfect for Joe Biden to use in a practice debate.

I'm sure that most everyone has come across someone very similar, and at the risk of being sexist, I think women can relate more to this kind of experience than do men.

Oh yes! I can just immagine what her fellow employees (subordinates) must have thought.

To everyone and anyone:

Does anybody know what Alaskans now think of their Governor. She was supposed to have had an 80% approval rating when first elected, but had dropped somewhat by the time she was picked as a VP running mate. But does anyone know what her approval rating is in Alaska now?

Thanks,Jean.
I'm thrilled to see HRC in the campaign.

All,
If you have access to a homeless shelter, please consider going there to register the folks there. Our local Dem HQ encouraged me to it when I go there to volunteer. It is a wonderful idea. You can use the shelter as their "permanent address". Just learn about the laws in your state about those who have had criminal backgrounds. For example, in CO any ex-felon can vote as long as they are not on parole. Probation is OK though.

Registering homeless people can be a HUGE success because the process will give them dignity. You might need to work with your local Dems to get them to the polls though.

Welcome back, Aunt Jean! The only time I went through an extended period without electricity was when tornadoes went through Indiana (and several other Midwestern states) Palm Sunday, 1965. We were without power for about two weeks - at least one tornado hit the high tension main lines bringing power in, taking down several of the towers, plus all kinds of other damage to the grid system.

We were all VERY glad when the power came back on, except it then meant we had to go back to school - VBG.

On another note:

From the Bob Barr campaign, a press release:

"Bob Barr Files Suit in Texas to Remove McCain, Obama from Ballot"

http://www.bobbarr2008.com/press/press-releases/133/bob-barr-files-suit-in-texas-to-remove-mccain-obama-from-ballot

If one is off the ballot, both are. If they try to kick Obama off, but try to leave McCain on, it will be one heck of a fight!

The major question I have, if the suit succeeds in kicking both off the ballot, is who has the better ground game in Texas for the write-in vote? Obama or McCain?

Well Bob, according to the reports in Alaska:

"A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson, even did an online chat with the Washington Post, in which he revealed that Palin’s approval rating in the state was not the much-touted 80%, but 65% and sinking — and that among journalists who followed her it might be in the “teens.”"

Emit R Detsaw said...

And Bob, and actual reliable poll found:

"However, since she joined the national Republican ticket, 51% of Alaska voters say that Palin is doing an Excellent job as governor. That’s up from 35% in July."

(From Rasmussen)

I think it's funny that she was down to 35% (from 80 or 90 percent) in only one year, but got a bounce to 51% when voters in Alaska thought they could dump her on the National stage like Texas did with Bush 8 years ago.

With the grassroots effort, I think Obama would have the edge in a write-in effort. McCain's camp would simple ask their supports to write-in for them. Obama's staff would pass out exactly how to put the name on the ballot. They have to match. I.E. John McCain and John S McCain would be votes for two different people and would not be counted together.

If, and I say if for a reason, that Texas would have gone to McCain with everyone on the ballot, then having Barr win the State would be a win for Obama. Basically anything that prevents McCain from picking up Texas's Electoral Votes pretty much locks up the election so McCain can't win.

Goodmorning everyone!!!!

oh what a beautiful day. Had my HOT bath forgotten how great it felt. LOL Walking thru my families yard I have about 100 [ain't no lie] ant bites nasty little creatures. I kept trying to use my flashlight and oil lamp last night. It's funny how people don't really appreciate something until they have to do without it for awhile. I can't really remember who's mother was north of Houston {I believe] have you"ll heard how they did? AJ

Bob, this is for you. It's an editorial in Anchorage newspaper about how Alaskans are starting to feel about Governor Palin and Senator McCain.

aunt jean-We're so glad to hear you're okay. I just had the standard crazy busy kind of week of just having to deal with working overtime, car breaking down, and getting to "hear" my daughter in the band the other night, which now means of course I've got a soar throat from cheering and being out in the night air. It's still nothing compared to what you and leah are recovering from. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

morning, all! on NPR this morning, they said that John McCain has to not blow up, and not make any gaffes during the debate on Friday.

Vicki,

Talk about lowering expectations. For McCain to have a good debate he just has to not blow up? LOL Too bad I think he is going to blow up. I really hope the moderators actually ask him some tough questions like privatizing social security. Then this quote would be fun to bring up. "Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation."

Vicki in Seattle said...

sorry, that's not the bar for a "good" debate for him - it's the standard he must meet unless he wants to lose votes. a lot of votes.

Dilbuck said...

Ah sorry for the misunderstanding. I hope the debate really focuses on the economy. If it does, I think we will see Obama get a huge jump in the polls.

Emit R Detsaw said...

This coming Friday's debate should actually favor McCain. It's supposed to be the debate on Foreign policy. Though I think Obama will mop the floor with him.

The 3rd Presidential debate is on the economy, health care, etc.

Vicki in Seattle said...

holy potatos! McCain DID suggest that the financial market model be used to reform health care!

You're BACK!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!! We've missed you! I'm SOOOOOOOO glad to hear everything is ok! Hopefully you are able to clean up pretty quickly.

Sorry I haven't posted before now but I forgot to take aspirin last night.......ya, we went out, UGH! Bill's hand is doing better. He went back to work in much more of a supervisory role (moreso than he was doing before.....he's always been in the supervisory role but has always like to get in there and do the job also).

Bob, I have known quite a few women like your daughter. My stepmother is one of them. That is one of the nice things about being gay, you can see through the bullshit and dismiss it as if they are simply being over-zealous. When dealing with my stepmother, well lets just say, I DON'T. I ignore her on the very RARE occasions that I see her and my....I want to puke when I say this.....my dad (aka my sperm donor).

----

On a brighter note Gallup today has:
Obama - 50%
McShrub - 44%
-----
Obama +6

Real Clear Politics (poll of polls)
Obama - 47.4
McShrub - 45.3
----
Obama +2.1

I don't think the Bob Barr suit in Texas is going to go anywhere (at least not anywhere significant). I do not think the lawyer who filed it necessarily understands Texas election law.

The essence of the theory of the case is that the deadline in Texas was before Obama and McCain were nominated by the national parties. However, under Texas election law -- as under the law of most states -- it doesn't matter who the national party nominates. What matters is who the state party chooses to put on their ballot. In theory, a rogue state party could have put Hillary and Kucinich as their ticket.

From what I understand, both parties put in the papers for a ticket and a slate of electors. The only issue is whether they are able to replace the original ticket with the real ticket after the deadline for filing. (My quick glance at the statute says no.) However, even if they are forced to have an Obama-C. Edwards ticket and a McCain-Pawlenty ticket, the electors are not bound to vote for the ticket. Thus, there would not be a need for a write-in vote, just a good message to tell voters to vote for the party ticket.

OMG! I'm watching MSNBC and they have a woman talking about the government putting $700 Billion into the buying up "bad mortgages". She went on to say that the government is hoping to "profit" off of those "bad mortgages" once the market becomes stable again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of driving the deficit and national debt down, but since when did our government (not its employees) become a "for profit" organization?

jean said...

Indy ,
The AIG thing is at 11% which is 8%above lending.
The reason they are in the position is because that there were no funds to lend.
This should not be for free because you and I pay for it.

AJ is back. Just Happy.

Two Aleve and 2 glasses of water.
You are old enough now to remember
LOL and no I am not being catty;)

Independent Voter said...

Jean - LOL, I know I know, I just completely forgot to take it last night. Feeling MUCH better now. ;)

Independent Voter said...

"This should not be for free", I agree with that statement, however do we directly benefit from the "profit"? Or would they simply throw that money at subsidizing the oil industry too? That's the problem I have with it. The government should not be a "for profit" organization. I would hope that they would put the "profits" toward paying down the debt, but if the Repukes are still in charge I think we ALL know where those "profits" would be applied, and it ain't the taxpayer.

jean said...

Indy,
There is a "chance" to be for profit.
I have no problem with that.
Look at the lending rates for corporate. They are higher because of higher risk. You also have the chance of higher returns.
Many of these problems is because of the unavailable funds to lend.
Lenders caused most of these problems and there was a run on the market.
There will will a Dem Senate and a Dem House. If there is a surplus hopefully we will have Social Security that is stable.
We will also have a Dem President,
Obama.
There is a chance, I say lets go for it.
This money lent is not for charity or those less fortunate.
It is business.

LOL! Good for you. Can I hire one of them? A son that cooks that is?

Vicki in Seattle said...

I want to hire a son that cooks, too! but I'm not fussy, it could be a daughter.

when I was 12, I ran across a recipe for homemade yeast bread in one of my mom's cookbooks, and she let me try it. I was popular after that!

anyway, no son or daughter here, I have to go buy chicken for dinner. It's the first drizzly day of fall, and I intend to use the oven to bake stuff tonight.

Independent Voter said...

Vicki, since fall doesn't officially start until Monday, does that mean that today is the last drizzly day of summer?

jean said...

Indy and Vicki,
Looking for a 3 day break anytime for either kid LOL.
I will also go with 1 or 2days.
I made it a major point that both kids need to know how to cook and that is every summer (no homework).
They pick the recipe, make a list and walk to the grocery store to buy it. This equals to 20 phone calls in 15 minutes especially when they are in the produce section:)
I go through the recipe the first time and help then we decide to keep the recipe or not. The next time they are on their own.
The house has not burned down so I am good.
They will not be helpless when they go to college and start real life.
Most of their friends have no clue.
I have no idea what the parents are doing.
The kids are going to leave the house one day. Right now I think that is only in my prayers.
I am not big on fastfood.

Indy, What did you do last night?
jean

Independent Voter said...

Jean - we started out at a small party at one of our neighbors houses. We had margaritas there. Then we walked down to a piano bar (The Caliph) had a few drinks with some other friends of ours, and then walked a little further down to a "neighborhood" bar (The Loft) and had a few more there until we finally stumbled back home around 1.
