Obama Veep Pick To Come Friday

CBS News has confirmed that Barack Obama's campaign now plans to announce Obama's vice presidential choice to supporters via email and text message on Friday afternoon. (This plan could change, of course.)

He will then appear with his running mate at noon the next day in Springfield, Illinois, CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports.

Rachel Maddow Replacing Dan Abrams On MSNBC Effective Immediately

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/19/rachel-maddow-replacing-d_n_119929.html

Just in time for the closing rush of the presidential election, MSNBC is shaking up its prime-time programming lineup, removing the long-time host -- and one-time general manager of the network -- Dan Abrams from his 9 p.m. program and replacing him with Rachel Maddow, who has emerged as a favored political commentator for the all-news cable channel.

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

Dave,

Re: 'Verdict' - I got OVER Abrams when he kept bringing that GOP tool and fool Brad Blakeman on show after show. I must have sent at least 5 emails to Verdict that they didn't need a Goebbels'-type Republican hack, but an honest person on the show to present a conservative viewpoint.

Blakeman's problem was that he twisted EVERYTHING in such a way that it was good for the GOP.

Political infighting in the Democratic Party? "Shows the Democrats have fractured, suppresses divergent viewpoints, and certain parts of the party will vote for the GOP nominee."

Political infighting in the Republican Party? "Shows the Republican Party is the 'big tent', and tolerates divergent viewpoints."

Abrams must have had SOME reason to keep letting him appear on the show - college roommate? The family of one was friends with someone in the other family?

About two weeks ago, though, some scuttle-butt about Blakeman and lobbying scandals came up (I think in connection with Abramhoff?), and suddenly the idiot has not been on the show since. Coincidence?

I'm very glad to see "happy face Dan's" will not be following Keith in two weeks.

Dave,

At least Buchanan will sometimes acknowledge when there is something in the news that is detrimental to the GOP or any of it's candidates. Not so with Blakeman.

As I said, an honest analyst will be able to find the good in the bad, but also be able to admit when something happens that reflects bad on their party and/or candidate. Not so with Blakeman.

And since Abrams kept allowing Blakeman to appear time after time, my opinion of Abrams kept dipping lower and lower.

I will admit at one time I thought Blakeman was on the show at times to present the lunatic fringe GOP viewpoint, but he was given too much 'respect' and consideration. I soon discarded that idea as Blakeman got weirder and weirder.

Obama Describes his Ideal VP
by Bonney Kapp

Barack Obama let slip a small detail about his yet-to-be-named running mate at his Raleigh town hall today when he referred to the veep as a “he.”

The candidate and his staff have not given any hints as to who he will name - or even who he is considering and the timing of the announcement, which many believe will occur in the coming days. So when Obama said “he” instead of the less revealing “he or she,” eyebrows rose in the press file as reporters wondered what that comment meant for Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and former rival Senator Hillary Clinton’s chances to fill the bottom of the ticket.

“By the way, my VP also will be a member of the Executive Branch — he won’t be one of these 4th branches of government where he thinks he’s above the law,” Obama said after saying he would not hand over policy to the veep.

The tight-lipped campaign wouldn’t confirm or deny that Obama’s choice is male.

Beryl said...

It may seem sexist but it is still grammatically correct to use "he" meaning "he or she".

I don't think we should read a lot into that.

Biden Source Downplays VP Denial

How big a deal is today's veepstakes comment from Sen. Joe Biden that "I'm not the guy"?

A figure familiar with Biden's thinking says the remark is hardly consequential.

"That is a comment that he typically gives for people who ask about [the vice presidency]," the source said, adding that it has been the senator's stock answer to the question for weeks now.

In other words, let the speculation continue.

This on Keith tonight:

The McCain campaign is rumored to be asking the state Republican party orgs in every state to make sure that a candidate registered as a Democrat can run on the Republican ticket in their state.

I think this is a ruse. It's either a rumor put out by the McCain campaign to throw everyone off, or by another party to stir up the GOP base, but I'm not sure which.

Why do I think it's a ruse:

1. LIEberman is NOT registered as a Democrat, but as an Independent.

2. The one-issue voter GOP base will sit out the election with LIEberman on the ballot.

3. Even if McCain is doing this only as a trial balloon, the one-issue voter GOP base has already clearly let it be known that they will not tolerate a pro-choice candidate on the GOP ticket.

The danger to McCain (and if he doesn't realize it, it validates his fifth-from-the-bottom class ranking at Annapolis) - Just putting this out, even as a trial balloon with no intention of having LIEberman on the ticket, could cause the one-issue voter GOP base to say 'To hell with McCain' anyway, and no matter who he chooses (even the Huckster), will sit out the election.

I assume that by "registered" they would be referring to Joe Lieberman's party affiliation on his Connecticut voter registration. Although I can't find it online, I would bet that Sen. Lieberman is still registered as a Democrat; registering as "unaffiliated" would mean that he could not vote in any primary election.

Incidentally, Joe Lieberman did not run as an independent, as most people think. He ran as the candidate of the Connecticut for Lieberman party.

Leah,
This is all I could find from Marc, and it is from early this afternoon.

http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/08/obama_to_appear_with_vp_in_spr.php

It sounds like he is making an educated guess like everyone else.

All that is [possibly] confirmed is that the VP choice will make an appearance in Illinois with Obama on Saturday. That does not prevent him from announcing as early as..... now.

Kaine isn't on the speaking list. Obama will be in Virginia on Wednesday. He is Catholic and has 14 years experience in elected office. He came out in support of Obama VERY early, and has been championing an almost identical message. I think it is a great fit. My only problem is that Kaine is young enough where he might get ideas about a 2016 presidential run, and I DO NOT want that. That could change, maybe he'll grow into something I like more by 2016.

apissedant said...

I posted several days ago that the Bradley effect is bupkus anyways.

Tennessee Democrat Harold Ford Jr. is most definitely a black man. He was polling an average of 6% behind his white, Republican opponent. He ended up losing by 3%. This is the exact opposite of the Bradley effect. This was a silly theory dreamed up by a racist Republican.

I have met a few Democrats that are voting an almost straight Democratic ticket... with the exception of the Presidential race. They may not say it is because of race, but they have no problem saying they won't vote for Obama.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

apissedant-

I posted the CBS link that said Friday afternoon.

Well, I don't think it will be before Friday. I think the campaign wants everyone to talk about it until Friday then they will announce Friday afternoon so the pundits will talk all evening then Obama and the VP will be on stage Saturday in Illinois. So the Obama camp should dominate the media from now until the convention that starts Monday and then they will dominate all week with the convention.

Richard said...

In case we needed any more proof of Rebecca Curtis' racism, a quick google search uncovers this "story" published in Esquire. Gah.

For someone who wants us to believe she isn't a bigot, AJ chooses strange pundits to praise.

apissedant said...

The main thing is this:

How many black men (or women) have run for public office in this country?

LOTS. Not a ridiculous amount, but no small number.

Out of all those races, they found 4 where the polls showed the black man or woman up much more than it turned out they actually were.

In less than four minutes, I was able to come up with one that showed the opposite trend. If I did even an hour of research, I could easily find another 3, and even more where the polls were about spot on.

In that same hour, I could easily find dozens of white men who polled much higher than they actually ended up doing. We had this problem in 2000 with Gore, 1948 with Dewey, 2004 with Kerry.... this list goes on. Polling is unreliable, but not inherently racist.

This is later than the Atlantic article by Marc.

apissedant said...

rich,
I would still be more inclined to call her huffpost article as ignorant and incorrect. I don't like jumping straight to the racist card. Stupidity, ignorance, and bad fact checking can also be the culprit. Or just really wanting a headline and pandering with false facts.

She leaves out NC, Iowa, SC, and many other states, where Obama did MUCH better than he polled. The differential between polls and actual in these states were 17.3, 6.2, and 6.7. Bad fact checking and ignorant writing. Possibly racist, but I cannot confirm that so I will not claim that. More likely a manipulative white woman trying to get what she wants (HRC VP) and get some publicity to increase her own stature.

Mike in Maryland said...

The BIG strike against Kaine is that the Virginia state government is facing a large budget deficit next year, and it looks like one of the only options will be to raise taxes. The GOP would love to have that to sling against an Obama/Kaine ticket.

Most of the reason for the budget deficit is that Virginia didn't pay attention to roads for decades. Also, Virginia doesn't have much ability to direct development to or from certain areas.

Some of the worst traffic in the nation is in Northern Virginia. The reason? Development went helter-skelter everywhere, and too fast for the transportation system to keep up (if any was built). Now that new systems need to be built, there is no money, and it will be extremely expensive to build them through areas that have been developed.

Add to that, there is no way to encourage development to be done in a sane manner. An example - Tysons Corner has one of the ten largest shopping centers in the US, and has more office space than Center City, Philadelphia, yet the population in that area is about 20,000. Even if you live in Tysons, you almost have to drive, as there is no easy pedestrian-friendly manner to get from place to place in Tysons.

This situation is typical of a lot of Virginia - massive need for transportation projects, but little money to pay for them. Most of the problem can be laid at the feet of the 'don't let the government regulate' crowd, the crowd that the GOP has under it's control, and can't be easily educated on this subject. Yet they are the ones who scream very loud about government not helping solve the problems.

Mike,
True enough... but Biden has more negatives... and more substantive negatives at that, against him. There are negatives against everyone.

Warner raised taxes and came out smelling like roses. Virginia has still been named the #1 state for business and the best managed state several times under Kaine and Warner. There are a lot of positives that go with that negative.

Maryland's Republican Governor tried to jump all over Kaine and Warner for raising taxes, and they just pointed out that Maryland's taxes are still leaps and bounds above Virginia's, and yet Maryland still has larger budgetary concerns and nothing better to show for it. The insults didn't gain any traction.

apissedant said...

Leah,
I know what you're saying, but the media has a way of, "confirming" by circulating the rumor enough. One entry starts a rumor, and then eight others pick up that rumor... and then the original one uses all the other articles as sources to confirm the rumor that they started.

Like I said, Friday isn't a bad guess, but with as little as the Obama campaign is releasing, I don't buy the confirmation idea. Especially since MSNBC claimed confirmation that all the potential VPs have to keep their calendar clear on Thursday, which would amount to confirmation on a Thursday announcement. Can't confirm two different days and have both confirmations be correct.

apissedant said...

Basically the same thing I said with the whole Edwards debacle. I didn't say that he didn't have an affair, in fact at one point I said it was entirely possible. I just said that the reports had no actual proof of it, and I wasn't going to buy it until I saw proof. Now there's proof, and now I'm disappointed.

Aunt Jean said...

I'm talking as a Hillary supporter.Yes I know I have gave Leah crap about her but only to piss her off [sorry Leah] I have read up on her and she seems to have a pretty good head on her shoulders. But and there's always a but knowing how it would make me feel as a Hillary supporter if he does would be an insult. Now Richardson is a different story that will make Hillary supporters out and out mad as hell. Is it right probable not.Just how it is.

I know that there are people on here that think I'm a racist. I know I'm not so I don't care what they think. There are plenty of Hillary supporters out there that think that Obama didn't win fair including me because of how bias the media was against Hillary. I'm not one to hold a gruge. I believe it's over deal with it and work with what you got.

But there are plenty of voters that don't feel the way I do. Everyone on here thinks that Obama will be President no problem. Well it might not be that easy if he picks the wrong VP. He doesn't have to pick Hillary just to win but it wouldn't hurt. If he doesn't and he picks Sebelius or Richardson it's going to be very hard on him.

A lot harder than anyone thinks on here. I want a democrat for President. I know that Nader is also running [he's about as useless as tits on a bore hog.

I understand your feelings about not wanting Obama to pick another woman.

But the way I see it is that it is what Hillary was working for - to break the glass ceiling so that women, any woman, can climb the ladder and get to the top positions.

So it is a double edge sword.

If he picks a man - then women are being left out.

If he picks Sebelius - then the Hillary folks will take it as an insult (which I still do not think it would be an insult - it would be more of showing that Hillary helped another woman to succeed).

I say - let Obama pick who ever he wishes to, since he will be the one having to work with him/her for eight years, and all of us Democrats support him in his decision no matter who it may be :)

Something else that I think...

I think that Obama was furious when he found out that McCain did not show up at the Faith Forum on time.

And so I think this is part of the reason the gloves have come off.

He knows that McCain didn't show up on time on purpose so that he could hear the questions prepare answers beforehand.

Obama is a principled man even though he is a politician and I think that what McCain did really pissed Obama off!

No one likes to be played a fool - and that is what McCain did to Obama.

Independent Voter said...

True that Leah. I think you are right on that. One thing I think we saw during the primary is that "peaking" at the right time is paramount. I think what happened with Clinton is that she peaked twice in the campaign. The first time was actually before the primaries even started and then once again at the end of the primaries. Where Obama started to peak with a few blips, but then took off in February where he actually did peak. So if he can get to a point to where he peaks again toward the very end of October beginning of November he will do great.

Please don't take that offensive AJ, that is just how I saw it.

I am sure that the Obama camp is saving up some ads and talking points for later in the race... but so are the Republicans.

The good thing that we have on our side is all of the extra democrats that have been registered during the long primary race. The republicans didn't have that advantage.

I wonder if there is a tally somewhere of how many total Democrats vs. Republicans (per state) there are now that are eligible to vote.

Independent Voter said...

Leah,

Excellent point. From my understanding, Democrats outnumbers Republicans by something like 3-4% (nationwide) and that Republicans had actually lost party members. It use to by 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 (one of those being "independent" or "undeclared"). It hasn't changed much from those numbers however there has definitely been a swing toward the Democrats.

Voter registration shifts from Republican
Published: Aug. 5, 2008 at 9:07 AM

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The number of registered Republican voters in the United States fell as registered Democrats rose since the last general election, voting experts said.

But, almost as often, people are registering to vote without declaring any party affiliation, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported Tuesday.

While implications for the general election remain unclear, experts told the Times voting registration numbers may signal a movement away from the GOP that could affect local, state and national politics for several election cycles.

In battleground states such as Iowa and Nevada, state officials reported more registered Democrats than Republicans, a reversal from 2004. No state officials reported a similar switch to more registered Republicans than Democrats for the same period.

A dozen states report the number of voters registering as independent outpaced both Republicans and Democrats.

"This is very suggestive that there is a fundamental change going on in the electorate," Michael McDonald, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and political science associate professor at George Mason University who studies voting patterns, told the Times.

Democratic voter registration continues to surge in Florida

http://www.americablog.com/2008/08/democratic-voter-registration-continues.html

Leah Texas4Obama said...

According to Wikipedia

Registered voters in 2004

Democrats: 72 million

Republicans: 55 million

Independents: 42 million

It will be interesting to see the numbers in 2008.

Mike in Maryland said...

Dave,

On the party ID registration, in June 538.com had a column on party registration (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/06/worlds-simplest-election-projection.html). The party ID figures were based on a combination of three recent surveys: Gallup, Rasmussen , and Pew.
Democrats - 38.2
Republicans - 28.9
Independents - 32.9

The key to winning will be getting out the Democrats to vote on November 4, and getting a near split or better with the Independents. If McLame has a pro-choice VP candidate on his ticket (Ridge or LIEberman), that's even better, as it would depress the Repig voters, and they would stay home. If he chooses Mittens Romney, it would depress the Evangelical vote. If he chooses Alaska's Gov. Palin, her potential legal problems could haunt the ticket.

Richard said...

HosertoHoosier over at 538 has a great comment, part of which I excerpt here:

Today we are going to learn how to play veepstakes.

1. Pick a candidate at random.

2. Put together a list of adjectives that describe the candidate.

3. Claim that people sharing those adjectives will be more likely to vote for the candidate.

4. Take a look at what state the candidate is from. Is it a swing or lean state? If so, the candidate can win it. If not, point out that historically the effect of VP's on swing states has been small.

5. Picture the candidate in a tank, then picture the candidate wearing a hard hat, while visiting a steel mill. Which of these images appeals most to do? If you said tank, then the candidate is strong on national defence. If you said hard hat, the candidate is strong on the economy. CEO's are automatically strong on the economy, while veterans are automatically strong on defence.

6. The next part is tricky. Is your veepstake selection more similar to the presidential candidate or more different. If similar, then the VP will increase the salience of key issues. If different, then the VP will make up for strengths. If neither, think of an issue they might have mentioned. They are now strong on that issue.

7. Are they a congressman? They have Washington experience. Governor? They have executive experience. Political outsider? They are a fresh face who can clean up Washington. Or VP/first lady? They will guarantee a victory, unless they don't.

8. Finally, we have ideology. Centrists are smart picks aimed at increasing appeal to independents. Hardliners are smart picks aimed at appeasing the base.

Worried that your analysis might be crap? Don't be. VP's don't matter anyway, so it would be hard for you to be proven wrong.

Doc Pickles said...

Mike in Maryland is spot on about getting voters out, especially new voters. If the campaign stays positive and looks to the future this base of new voters will carry the election for Obama. Now and then McCain will have to get a slapdown for sneaking out of his cone of silence but the focus really should remain on America and the future. This is the most inspiring and invigorating election

All of these new voters and forward thinking Indies are the key. There will be a lot of new voters this time around.

Hillary did a great service to the party, everybody who is able really should chip in a ten spot to help her pay the gas bill. She stayed in the race for the long haul and turned the primary into a massive sign-up drive for new Democrats. In some states like Wyoming the number of voters increased tenfold and now a traditionally safe republican state like North Dakota or Alaska has an energized Democrat voice which forces McCain to campaign in places he would never have had to visit otherwise.

The primaries gave everybody a chance to really flesh out policy and strengthen the organization. All 50 states have already had a say in this election and it has really energized the party on a grassroots level, even in places that won't be voting in this election had a significant voice. How many times have primary results from Democrats Abroad or American Samoa ever made front page news?

Now there are strong grassroots organizations in all 50 states for the Democrats. In contrast, McCain is outspending Obama on the ground in only one state, Florida, where he's piggybacking on an already strong Republican organization.

After Super Tuesday the McCain organization drifted along like a bloated sack of nerf balls on a river and his organization was never really tested. Now that McCain has to face a real candidate that cracks are showing and now the Republican base is either uninspired or indifferent. What a contrast.

Stay positive!

Lots of new Democratic voters being registered won't mean much if they can't vote. I hope the campaign is paying attention to seeing that the registrations aren't disallowed for real or imagined flaws and that people aren't also purged off the rolls.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the mess in that area last time.

First off...

Second off,
Yes Mike, your former Governor sucked. The point was, that even in the red state of Virginia, voters can forgive a tax hike as long as they come out unarguably better off at the end of the day. People really care about how much money they have to spend at the end of the day, not always just how much the government took. Clinton also did ok after hiking the marginal tax rate by 4%, because the economy shot through the roof, so American's disposable income still grew, despite the fact that the government took a bigger piece of the pie.

1. Ignorant (stupid, dull, fearful etc.)
2. Evil (primarily racists but also those who want to see American in ruin)
3. Greedy (corporatists, war profiteers, etc.)

The latter 2 will never support Obama no matter who he pick as his VP unless that pick is one of them.

The ignorant have fallen victims of Republican deceptive practices but there is hope for them. The VP needs to help allay their fears and give them comfort in an Obama Presidency.

Obama will win this election because of the new voters, but it never hurts to have a few Republicans onboard.

Lots of Republicans are good people who want to see their country managed sensibly under a government that protects their freedoms.

They like balanced budgets, they like liberal trade, and they don't want to see hundreds of billions of dollars siphoned off from their economy to fight wars in a country they can't find on the map.

Bill Clinton didn't raise taxes, encouraged trade with the outside world, protected individual rights and freedoms, and balanced the budget. Sounds like the kind of administration a typical moderate Republican would be happy to support.

Contrast that with to this current war hungry administration who eavesdrops on its own citizens phone calls, runs up record deficits, alienates their country from the rest of the world.

There are plenty of good Republicans out there who would vote for Obama. Just ask Abe Lincoln!

We have already discussed that Christmas is coming on this Blog with the VP announcement being the beginning.
Levity is very important and there has been a lot of crap about McCain today to put it mildly.
I will erase this if anyone laughs at me but not with me;)
Have you heard the Twelve Days of Christmas?

Hum Hum clearing my voice.

On the first day after the election my true love gave to me,
Barak Obama in the White House:)
On the second day after the election my true love gave to me,
US Secretary Gore for the Environment.
On the third day after the election my true love gave to me,

I need contributions to continue this thing or you can just get the idea;)

I told you I was going to come up with something for the holiday:0

I am starting to hate the idea that the announcement will be coming soon - if it isn't her! LOL :)

You could also sign a petition asking to let Colbert and Stewart speak at the DNC.

Does it look like to you that Obama's picture is not showing for his big news page on HuffPo?
