The Repository (of Canton, Ohio in Stark County) has endorsed Barack Obama. The paper endorsed Bush in 2004. Hopefully it will help turn the state blue. McSame is already slipping in the polls there.

http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=3&subCategoryID=37

Excerpt:
=============
This is not the John McCain that The Repository endorsed in the 2000 Republican primary over George W. Bush. Then, McCain was unquestionably an independent thinker. We supported him in large part because his spending plan was more conservative than Bush's. The John McCain of 2008 freely admits he has voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time, even to the extent of flip-flopping on the Bush tax cuts he originally opposed as detrimental to the deficit.

The events of the last two weeks have provided another telling contrast between the two candidates. Obama has stressed the need for a bipartisan agreement on a financial bailout and reform package that includes strong accountability measures. McCain has indulged his penchant for drama. He declared that if he were president, he would fire the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission — action that a president doesn't have the authority to take. Then he abruptly refused to debate Obama on Friday — at a time when Americans need to hear directly from both men about their reaction to the financial crisis — but, fortunately, McCain changed his mind again.

We believe that Obama's intellect, caution, levelheadedness and calm demeanor make him better suited to lead a nation that must respond to many unwelcome changes with yet more change. The Repository endorses Sen. Barack Obama for president.

I am not sure if Senator Obama will win North Carolina, but it's a worthy state to get any assistance that folks can give it. Besides the Presidential race, it has a key Senate race and a key House race. If we can gain 6 or 7 Senate seats, we will have a much easier time pushing through the Democratic agenda if Senator Obama wins, and will be able to force McCain to compromise if he wins.

Colorado is in roughly the same position as is New Hampshire.

it's another week, wondering what surprises await. so far, the only certainty that I foresee is that the stock market will be "volatile".

Palin can't be booted off the ticket. Losing a VP candidate at this late stage virtually ensures defeat. Of course, Maverick McCain is liable to do anything. At some point, he obviously was no longer demonstrating "flexibility", and moved well into "erratic" territory. He is no longer crazy like a fox. (When was his last brain scan, anyway?)

My fear is that the Maverick has one, last, desperate move in him, and he'll unleash it mid-October, so not quite yet. It took Obama a good four weeks to recover from the Palin buzz, after her nomination.

I saw that one too Leah. It blows my mind that stuff like that can happen. In Canada you can register at the poll if you have two pieces of ID, one of which is government issued photo ID with address.

Any form of democratic government ought to be making every effort to encourage citizens to vote instead of placing roadblocks, and election fraud ought to be one of the most serious of crimes... but I get the impression it is treated as sport in many places in the US.

I would think that McCain just lost a lot of retired folks today with his lack of leadership in getting the republicans to vote YEA on the bailout bill. I think we will be seeing Florida turning dark blue in the very near future.

Doug said...

The Republicans are going to get killed in the discussion about why the vote failed in the House, in a way that is going to wound McCain. The repubs did not live up to their commitment in a bipartisan bill--they put ideology first, not country first.

I hope a question about this comes up in the Veep debate!

Jean, btw, I have taken Baltimore tonight... wish me luck!

Retired people are supposed to keep their savings in safe stuff. The closer one gets to retirement, the safer you're supposed to keep your investments.

I know the advisers' mantra is invest in stocks to keep up with inflation, but were they not paying attention in, say, 2000?

Okay, I have some of my savings in the stock market, and it makes me a bit sick to see what has happened to them this week, but not as sick as I would be if I didn't have most of them in CDs, even if I sometimes calculate how long I can live without running out :-(

Meanwhile, I'm signing up to be a poll worker. My town is forking out $185 for what looks like 16 hours of work plus attending a class about it.

I hope U.S. currency doesn't become worthless...

Joshua said...

Did everyone notice how small minded the Republicans sounded as to why they voted against the bill? Nancy didn’t talk nicely enough in her last speech.

Did you get that? They voted against a bill to spite Pelosi. Fu** the country, vote against Nancy. Amazing statesmanship. I swear, Republicans are Neanderthals and oxygen is wasted on them.

Here’s the amusing part: Republican sure know how to fall in line behind the “talking points.” The House Minority Leader, John Boner (sounds better than Boehner) stated “Nancy made a partisan speech.” Now, every Republican is saying that Pelosi’s last speech was justification to vote against the bill. Amazing.

Doug said...

...and that is why the Repubs will be skewered in the media. "Pelosi hurt my feelings" is not a reason to not vote for a bill that is trying to keep US credit markets afloat.

Joshua said...

Here is where most people are wrong when they think the bill was a “bail out” for Wall Street “fat cats.” The tax payer is paying nothing (up front). They are simply taking an ownership position is those distressed equities.

For those who don’t understand what that means, here goes: The “government” is you and me. There are more of us than individual investors. Right now there is no confidence in the finance markets. So, no lender is willing to make a loan. Our economy functions on the ability to borrow. If no one can borrow, everything comes to a screeching halt. Get it? When we as a collective take an ownership position we improve the confidence of individual participants, and the economy restarts to hum.

We are not bailing out Wall Street. We are restoring confidence in our economy.

Joshua said...

“Retired people are supposed to keep their savings in safe stuff. “
What is the safe stuff? Perhaps you did not notice that some banks were threatening to pay 97 cents on the dollar for money markets. Got that?
We are at a crisis and there is no “safe stuff.” The only thing left now are treasuries, and that is paying 1%. Inflation is 3.6%. Do you see a problem there?

I would strongly advise against any “retired” person avoiding exposure to the capital markets. Unless you know exactly when you are going to die and that you know for a fact that you will not outlive your money. Otherwise, you must always remain exposed to the capital markets.

I am therefore also going with Baltimore.

In reference to retiree's and those close to retirement.
Noone came close to predicting this and almost anyone who is 7 yrs out is caught major in a financial crisis.
One of the biggest crisis is commercial lending which is almost frozen.
The question is if some people are getting a paycheck due to possible frozen credit lines that are used to float inventory etc. for 30 to 60 days that now do not exist.
This is not mismanagement and is common practice especially when a company is expanding.
They are expanding no more.
Retirees homes have lost 20-50% in value of their homes, those going to retiree are now not going to be a retiree for 5-7 years.
Now they have to question if they are going to get a paycheck now.
This trickle down effect has not been seen yet but will show in the next 6 monthes.
Only those on the edge now show,
many more will come.
Things are not even close.
I just got a retiree with 2 million in the bank and just wants to refi rate and term.
This is not a easy loan.
How stupid is that, the mortgage is $500,000 and he wants to keep it that way for liquidity.

Amer,

For the moment, at least, money markets are federally guaranteed. When at 97 cents to the dollar, that is a 3% loss, not a giant catastrophe, although certainly not a happy event.

Vanguard and Schwab have CDs available on their web sites. My credit union has CDs. All around 4%-5% for 2-3 years term. Yes, they depend on FDIC and the credit union equivalent, but I do think if the FDIC runs dry, that Congress will refill. This is a lot easier for taxpayers to understand than the bailout, and it affects many people not the ghostly CEOs.

Karen Anne said...

Jean,

What is your lump in? CDs? Money markets?

Jean,
I just went chicken after losing $31,000. I'll have to work at least one year if not two to recuperate. So much for early, early retirement.

I'm sitting in "stable funds" (3.4%) and the Credit Union's "executive" checking account (3%).

Anyone buying gold? LOL!

I admit that I am not panicked. Not yet anyway.

Joshua said...

Karen,
The main problem with money markets (besides low yield) is that only the first 100K is insured. Unless you open several brokerage accounts. But if you are in equities, your only risk is the market.

Doug said...

Beryl: there are lots of people buying gold... it is back up to 918/oz up considerably on the day.

Jean: I have kids going to university in a couple of years too, with their college funds fully invested. When we see times like today it is hard not to feel a bit panicky, but markets have always corrected in the past (even the Great Depression) if you just hang in you will be ok.

Am1st... most people underperform the market or even mutual funds averages because it is so difficult to time getting in/out. Hang in there!

Joshua said...

Doug, thank. I am not going anywhere.
Actually, now is the time to buy if you have any cash left. That is also why now is a good time for the government to buy some of those distressed assets. There is good chance that in 5 years (the government’s time horizon), they will be worth more than today and we will get most of our $700 billion back.

Republican John McCain has taken credit for helping broker a deal_even though he never sat in on congressional negotiations and is not a member of the Banking Committee.

I saw on the front page of DCW that McCain tried to make it sound like it passed. I heard the news @3 p.m. It's not a good time for that kind of phone call either, on top of a couple of other things. :(

Karen,
Any deposit in a regular bank is insured by the FDIC at 100K per depositor. It doesn’t matter in how many different accounts in that bank. And it doesn’t matter how many different instruments.

For brokerage accounts, the assets are insured by the SIPC. And only the money market is insured. And only the first 100K. That insurance is if the broker goes belly up.

Any other security you hold with a broker is only insured by private insurance that SEC makes the broker buy. Many brokers insure the first $5 million of your assets against fraud within the brokerage. There is absolutely no insurance against market losses due to poor performance of the asset in which you put your money.

That is how I remember it. I haven’t checked this in years. But I was clear about this. That is why I always get nervous when I sell stock and my money is in cash before I buy another stock. BTW, it takes 3 days from when you sell a stock to when you can actually get your hands on the cash. So, if you sold 1000 shares of spyder, you better hope that the broker remains solvent for the next 3 days.

Suzi,
The culture in America is to sneer at intelligence and embrace mediocrity. I think that almost every American is guilty of this. Think back to when you were in high school. Who were the popular kids? If any kid was smart and did his homework, wasn’t he called a nerd?

The amazing part is that we have managed to remain a superpower. But we are soon going to dismantle this. The people who make America great are immigrants. But the republicans are going to close the door on them if they have anything to say about it. Think about the last 10 Nobel Prize winners. How many of them were born here? Think about what makes us a superpower. From where did the scientists come?

suzihussein22 said...

amer1st-BTW, greetings. To a large extent, kids that do their homework are called nerds. I wasn't. I got along with most of the groups, except hard core druggies in East Nashville. That last part is just a "little bit" of parental bragging. :)

And if I remember correctly, I may be off, 52% of the scientist working on the atom smasher in europe are from the USA.
Scientist from all over the world are working on that and we do not have 52% of the population.

Karen Anne said...

Amer,

We are talking about two different things. I was talking about the new federal temporary guarantee for money market funds. Note that brokerages have to opt in to that. So far Schwab has, Vanguard has not.

Also, the SIPC insures the first $500,000 of stuff in a brokerage account, but, as you noted, only $100,000 of cash in it.

Current word is that the House will vote again on Thursday. Here's what the Dems need to do -

Figure out how many D votes there are for the bill (I heard this time Pelosi and Dem leaders determined they had 140 votes, and that was right on the mark). The they need to go to Boner and tell him we need 80 Rep votes. If he says he has them, then go to vote.

HOWEVER

To make sure the Repigs didn't lie, every Democrat votes 'Present' or doesn't vote until at least 80 Repigs have voted for the bill. If 80 don't vote for the bill, then it won't pass, not because the Dems voted it down, but because the Repigs didn't keep their word, and it would show on the vote tally that the Repigs voted against it.

Risky to an extent, but it would force to Repigs to give their word, and then KEEP their word for a change.

Dear friends,

Great news! The Obama campaign now has a new way for people of faith to show your support for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Please check out our new Letter to the Editor tool for people of faith. In a few quick and easy steps online, you can write your local newspaper and share why you, as a person of faith and values, support Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

http://my.barackobama.com/page/speakout/faithletter

For too long the debate over religion and politics in our country has been dominated by extreme voices and partisan politics. Barack believes that Americans are tired of religion being used to divide us, and are ready for a president who can bring us together.

Hey Jean, great article that explains how the credit tightening is spreading through the economy. It makes sense that it affects businesses and individuals 'at the margin' in terms of credit scores first, but as lenders tighten up the group 'at the margin' gets larger and larger.

As for Kiffen, well, that was pretty much inevitable. Al Davis wants to get to the playoffs and doesn't have the time or patience needed to build a successful program.

Doug said...

Here is another indicator of the credit markets tightening up globally:

Jean I have wondered the same thing. Here is their description of the poll:

This bipartisan GW-Battleground 2008 Poll surveyed 1,000 registered likely voters nationwide Jan. 8-11, 2007, and yields a margin of error of ± 3.1 percent.

First conducted in 1991, the GW-Battleground Poll has accurately portrayed the political climate through four presidential and three mid-term election cycles. The poll continues to be an in-depth bipartisan look at the political climate and a leader in setting the standards for polling. This nationally recognized series of scientific surveys is unique to the industry, in that it offers the distinct perspectives of two top pollsters from different sides of the aisle. The George Washington University is the sponsor of the GW-Battleground Poll, a highly regarded, bipartisan election survey conducted by top polling firms Lake Research Partners and The Tarrance Group.

The University's role in the poll is guided by its Graduate School of Political Management. GW's public affairs, public policy, and international affairs programs (undergraduate and graduate) are frequently ranked highly in leading publications, including recognition among the Top 10 "Most Politically Active" colleges and universities in the 2007 Princeton Review and as the "Hottest School for Political Junkies," according to the 2005 Kaplan/Newsweek How to Get Into College guide. The George Washington University also is one of the nation's best schools in fostering social responsibility and public service, according to the Princeton Review and Washington Monthly, which both included the University among its top-rated schools for community service in 2005.

From:
http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20070117005534&newsLang=en

I haven't seen commentary on the GW Poll, but there is probably something out there that analyzes why their results seem out of step with results from Gallup/Rassmussen, etc.

Perhaps their survey frame (registered likely voters) that is derived from past election cycles underestimates the changes in voter registration and party affiliation?

Beryl said...

I'm fine with the GW/Battleground because it tells me what it may REALLY be and makes us work harder.

But NOT Biden speeches from the 70s ... GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

tmess2 said...

GW/Battleground apparently does not weight by age and only uses land-lines. Not too surprisingly, their cross-tab on age of respondents shows a very high percentage of voters over 45 and a very low percentage of voters under 45 compared to the 2004 election (much less census figures). Given that younger voters have been more favorable to Obama at a statistically significant level, this failure to weight by age is almost certainly skewing the results.

tmess2 said...

umm Leah, I think the Palin people meant it as a joking exaggeration. Of course, if they are going to joke about the age of our VP pick what does that say about the age of McCain?

Beryl, it was regarding the joke that was posted last week:

"While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President .

The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.’

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old rancher said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a post turtle.’

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. ‘You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she doesn’t belong up there, she doesn’t know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb *** put her up there to begin with."

McShrub was talking about "re-suspending" his campaign this morning, (but wouldn't that mean that he would have had to suspend it before?)

This "new" suspension would more than likely be his "excuse" for having her skip the debate on Thursday. Unless he kicks her off the ticket, there is absolutely NO way she can skip the debate.

I do have the feeling that by putting her out there with Couric, they are trying to portray her as a total idiot so that the bar is set so low, that she wins by simply showing up (after all, these idiots voted for Shrub twice.) I hope that the Obama/Biden campaign are taking this "possible tactic" into account.

What the fuck! Aren't the Democrats supposed to be the ones that support Pay As You GO legislation? How in the hell do they think they are going to pay for this fucking bailout!

Here is the article I read about them granting additional tax cuts.

iv,

There wasn't tax cut info in that link, that I could find, but according to the Times, tax cut stuff includes fixing the AMT and solar energy credits. I'm for that.

As to paying for it, if Obama gets elected, the hundreds of billions a year going down the drain in Iraq will hopefully soon end, and his tax plan will increase taxes on the wealthy a lot.

Pollster.com has finally changed Pennsylvania to blue!

I'm not sure who runs the site, but they must be conservatives, as they still have the EC estimate as 250 for Obama, 174 for McCain. Many times a poll comes out that is not reflected on the site. Other times, crazy polls are put on the site, especially if the poll supports McCain - a recent one from Michigan showed McCain up by several points (5-7) in the state, where all other polls at the time had Obama up by 2-7.

Pollster.com currently has the following as tossups (EC votes and the site's estimated 'margin' in parenthesis):
Nevada (5 - M up by 1.8)
Colorado (9 - O up by 3)
Minnesota (10 - O up by 3.2)
Indiana (11 - M up by 2)
Ohio (20 - M up by .6)
Virginia (13 - O up by .2)
North Carolina (15 - M up by 1.6)
New Hampshire (4 - dead even at 46.2% each)
Florida (27 - O up by .2)

I go there not so much for the Pollster.com's analysis of the race, but to read the Neanderthal conservatives reactions to the polls. Some are downright funny, some are actually idiotic.

I am now certain that there are people who read these posts and who are able to act on what they read. For example, before market close on Monday I complained about the low FDIC/SIPC guarantee limit of $100K. At 5 am the next morning, O released a statement calling for the limit to be increased to $250K. Later the same morning McCain adopted Obama’s position (as usual). Later Bush signed on. And later the same day it entered the Senate draft. They are getting ready to vote on it tonight.

Again, I don’t want to take credit. Maybe good ideas have multiple simultaneous origins.

And while I am thinking about it, I advise Democrats to put aside class envy and work to the common goal of improving our country. We are going in the wrong direction. It takes all of us working together to right the ship of state. I read with some irritation posts at this site still complaining about “bailing out oberrich.” I advise you that some “uberrich” people also post here and read these pages. Also, some “uberrich” are among Obama’s ardent supporters.

Just because you are down does not make it a crime for anyone else to be successful.
JMHO.

Yep, just like the 'turtle on a fence post' comment ended up in Clinton's stump speech today!

yep, I read that turtle joke here.

I tried to watch Bill Clinton’s speech (it was carried live on CSPAN). I had to turn the TV off when he talked about Hillary supporting a bill. He seems to be genetically unable to fully and unconditionally support Obama. So, I didn’t listen long enough to hear him talk about the turtle joke.

You should have watched the whole Bill Clinton rally - he really is totally supporting Obama and had a few hidden jabs at Palin. The last half of the rally I saw was awesome!

Here is an article that should introduce a note of caution about the great poll numbers:

Still lots of work to be done to "firm up" the numbers. Bill Clinton's participation, if he continues on with speeches like the one he gave in Florida in the other battleground states, will really help!
