It is just amazing to me that you can tell which states have the most racists and uneducated folks in them. While most polls have Obama in the lead an Oklahoma state poll came out today with McCain +30.

I think that after this election is over someone in power needs to look at the states that still have 'backwards' thinking and do something about it -- through better education, better internet access, bringing in high tech businesses/jobs (importing more intellectuals from other states), or any other plan that will bring these racists states into the 21st century.

All hands on deck. I welcome Bill Clinton’s help. I will be happier if his interviews are different from the clips I saw of him last Sunday talk shows. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the show. I just saw some clips posted on the web. I just will never watch network TV again.

You have to check out this Palin interview clip--it contains "never seen before" moments (at least, not seen by me :).

Watch for Palin's responses on energy policy (it doesn't matter if global warming is a result of man's activies or not), abortion (does not support use of the morning after pill) and gays ("choices that adults make").

I hope she repeats these positions tomorrow night!

"Just because you are down does not make it a crime for anyone else to be successful."

I am not down. I do not resent legitimately wealthy ethical people.

I do resent people like Carly Fiorina, who rake in 7-8-9 figures while they ship jobs overseas, where work can be done more cheaply because there are no benefits or environmental regulations.

I resent people who build McMansions in small house communities and destroy the communities.

I resent financial people who make mega-millions that come directly out of the pockets of small mortgage holders.

I resent BIg Pharma CEOs who make 7-8-9 figures while charging terminal cancer patients hundreds of thousands of dollars for a drug that might extend their lives 1-3 months and costs, oh say $200 per patient to make and offset the research costs.

I resent HMO CEOs who make ditto while denying legitimate benefits to people who are sick and have to go thru the stress of fighting for treatment and often don't get it, or get it too late.

I resent waste, as in very conspicuous consumption, which the planet cannot afford.

Karen Anne said...

Leah,

Jinx of discussing this before the election off :-)

My two cents on the Cabinet:

HHS: Howard Dean (What's Judy going to do about her medical practice? Maybe he would rather go back to Vermont.)
HUD: Jesse Jackson, Jr.
Interior: RFK, Jr.

I would not put Hillary in any Cabinet position. Let her be a powerful Senator. Just too distracting to have her in the Cabinet, and I don’t think she has the ethical reputation suitable for the Supreme Court. I don't think she'd trade being Senator for a Cabinet slot anyway.

I would like to see Lincoln Chafee in some Cabinet position. He would be great at Interior, but so would RFK, Jr. I am thinking Agriculture for Chafee. My impression is that the farm laws need a lot of work. He’s smart and very environmentally oriented. He’s worked as a farrier. He lives on a farm, but I don't know if it’s a working farm.

Independent Voter said...

KA, thank you for responding to America1st.

Like you, I don't resent anyone because they have money. My issue is that we, as a nation, cannot afford to continue giving the uber-wealthy tax cut after tax cut, while the middle class is getting squeezed to impoverished levels.

And the rest of what you wrote is spot on.

I just got home and hadn't gotten time to respond.

Hey Aunt Jean, Hillary will get a chance to say what she wants, I'm sure.

If she is thinking about 2016 she might very well want to build a great legacy in the Senate as Obama's point person and run off of that record.

Independent Voter said...

AJ - I don't think you need to worry about her not having a position within the administration. I don't think she would accept a position within the administration. Of course she would have a major voice, but position, I doubt it.

The ONLY reason I say this is because Dems are trying to get a "super-majority" in the Senate so that they can get their agenda through. Like I said though she WILL have a major voice within his administration.

On the other hand, I could definitely see her IN his administration.

Independent Voter said...

Doug and AJ, I would like to see her take over Reid's position. I know she doesn't have the "seniority" for the position, but she HAS the spine that so many of the Dems like Reid lacks.

If Obama is as smart as I think he is he would put Hillary in his cabinet somewhere important. I really resent it when someone says anything neg. about Hillary. She has more ethics in her little finger than Richardson or a hell lot of other people.

how about Pelosi or Howard Deans place. AJ

Doug said...

Aunt Jean, I agree. Obama needs both Clintons, but particularly Hillary. She can help him in so many different ways, and it will really be up to her I think to decide what she feels is best for her. I think she is going to be attracted to building a legacy in the Senate as a lawmaker, and especially putting her stamp on the Healthcare initiatives that are sure to be brought forward.

Aunt Jean said...

Doug

I get into a defensive mode when I feel someone is insulting Hillary she is one of the greatest women I know. Not perfect but damn good. AJ

Independent Voter said...

AJ - Pelosi, I would like to see her replaced with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz or Rahm Emmanuel.

Howard Dean - I like Dean. I know you don't like how he handled the primary and the sexism that took place (and he finally admitted to the sexism - WELL after the primary concluded), but I'm not sure as to who to replace him with. I never liked Terry MacAullife (sp?), not that he would be given another shot. Honestly I don't see Howard Dean being replaced because there isn't really anyone to take his place (at this point in time.) By the 2012 election there might be, but I'm not sure.

Ok, had a rough day and needed a laugh. The CNN Political Ticker provided it for me. In the item "Palin has difficulty naming court case she disagrees with" there is some text at the end of the article that reads "Palin's comments came in the same interview during which she gave a widely-panned answer on the economic bailout bill and had trouble describing John McCain's record on regulation of the financial industry."

Well, the "trouble describing John McCain's record" was a hyperlink. I clicked on it it took me to a page that stated "Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here."

We already knew this, but cracked me up.

tmess2 said...

If I was Biden, especially when I had the second response, I would try to steer the question just a little bit off the beaten track. Try to put her in a position to talk about something that wasn't covered in her prep.

suzihussein22 said...

tmess2-Would you say Biden needs to show his stuff, connect with the people, but not give away anything to Palin?

Vicki in Seattle said...

I heard something interesting today - taht if Biden leads off during his intro comments that there's been a lot of slammin' of Palin, that some of it has focused on her family and personal matters, which is totally unfair, apologize on behalf of all those who have indulged in this behavior, and then say that he just wants to debate the facts just as he would with any other politico, male or female.

it was an interesting take on it - would help to defuse a lot of anger from potentially undecideds.

OH, AND ABOUT THE AVATAR. it's a Tardis, a time/space travelling machine from the sci-fi show Dr. Who. Dr. Who is a Time Lord, capable of travelling through time and space and visits all through Earth history, especially British history. (well, it IS a BBC show)

the Tardis is disguised as a British police box. :-)

Karen Anne said...

AJ, If I were Hillary, I would not accept a Cabinet position. People can become very powerful in the Senate, for example, Ted Kennedy or Robert Byrd. A Cabinet person is there for 4 years, maybe 8, and then has to start over at something else. A bunch of women have held Cabinet posts already, some of them very undistinguished, so it is not high prestige.

I mean, quick, how many current Cabinet members can you name - Condi Rice, Gates, a few days ago I wouldn't have known Paulson, the rest aren't even in my mental storage.

From her viewpoint also, I just don't see her as a Justice. They are pretty much invisible, and I don't think she wants that. She's been a political animal, not a long term attorney/judge.

Independent Voter said...

Ok, I know you guys are 'probably' going to jump all over me on this one; however, I think it is important for us to think about this one as far as Stalin...er....Palin is concerned.

The question regarding Supreme Court decisions. After reading the transcript, I have to say that I can KIND of understand her answer. The question was "Are there any other SC decisions you disagree with?"

Many of us thought by the misleading headlines that she couldn't name ANY other SC decision. The keyword in this question was "disagree". The reason I say this is because there are very few MODERN SC decisions that I have disagreed with (until recent times). I disagree with with the Plessy v Ferguson decision (which was later overturned by Board v Brown). And more recently I disagree with the recent DC v Heller decision that lifted the ban on handguns in DC (but that would be one that she agrees with.) You never know, maybe she has agreed with every decision (except Roe).

So with THIS particular question I'm willing to giver her a LITTLE wiggle room. NOT MUCH, but a little.

suzihussein22 said...

vicki-That kind of intro would be good. I don't think she should be expecting the kid glove treatment either.

I like some of the BBC programming, but I never got into Dr. Who.

Indy-

Palin should have not any wiggle room at all regarding the SCJ question.

She herself as governor issued a press release in Alaska voicing her disapproval after the SC ruling of Exxon v. Baker -- apparently she forgot about that issue that bothered her so very much at the time.

Palin must be treated like any other candidate - if she can't stand the heat then she needs to get out of the kitchen and go back to ALASKA!

Doug said...

Hey IV, no wriggle room for Failin'!

There is a SC decision, recent, directly related to Alaska, that she did disagree with--Exxon Valdez!

She is 'on the record' as disappointed in it!

Except, she probably was not familiar enough with it to even recall it let alone explain why she didn't think it was the right decision.

She has a fundamental character flaw that compels her to give an "intelligent sounding" [to her own ears] response to a question when asked, instead of answering "I don't know."

Doug said...

Leah, you are a faster typer than I am! LOL

Independent Voter said...

Aunt Jean said...

Karen anne

you are probable right on the cabinet members Rice and Gates is the only 2 that came into mind. That's terrible of me. Yes she likes to be in the lime light so I also agree about the judge part.

As far as the court cases besides roe verses wade, eminent domain, and the DC verses Heller and if I think about it I could possible come up with 1 or 2 more.

With those three I agree with 1st one not the second one and agree with the 3rd one. AJ

Aunt Jean said...

Dave I forgot and a biggggg mouth with good lungs!!! LOL LOL AJ

tmess2 said...

Suzi, Biden just needs to be a little bit folksy and a little bit knowledgeable. This debate is all about Palin (and through her about McCain's wisdom).

On someone else's point, even if the question was any other opinion that she disagreed with, it's clear she doesn't even read her own press releases. Less than two months ago, you had the decision on the Exxon Valdez case (Exxon v. Baker). At the time, Governor Palin's office put out a press release expressing its displeasure with that opinion.

Kujo said...

I originally supported Biden in the Primaries. I followed him in the Senate for many years. I knew he was qualified and very smart.

I also liked Obama. It really was not much of a choice, early on it was appearent that Biden was not going to gain any traction, so I hitched onto my second choice.

The one thing I remember though is after every debate, CNN would report in its "Scorecard" that:

On the question Who won the Debate:

Hillary: reason, Did not do anything to hurt her.

One the question Who was most knowledgable:

Biden

It always struct me funny how someone could say Hillery won the debate and Biden would be most knowledgable.

Going into this debate I think Palin will be told exactly what to say for each question. Since most polititians never answer the question anyway, it really does not matter what she says as long as it has a verb, a noun and an adjective or 2. If the word tax is in the question, she says We are for lower taxes in this economic hardship, they want to raise taxes. If the word Energy is used, Drill, Drill, Drill is her answer.

There is a possibility that, like in the primary, people will be able to tell the difference between knowledge, and script. I don't expect her to answer like she did to Katie.

(There is the possibility they mix the questions up in an order she is not expecting and give the answer to question 2 for question 1 and so on.... but I don't think so)

Doug said...

Kujo, I'm not sure Failin' can even follow a script, unless she is allowed to have notes with her. If so, it will be obvious that she is reading.

Do they have the questions in advance? If that is the case there won't be any gaffes from either of them.

After the Couric Veep interviews today I don't see how Palin can ever recover, unless Joe stumbles in a major way which I am sure he won't do.

A closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain

Ignore the fact that it is published by Rolling Stone. Look at the person who was interviewed and read the rest of the article.

Excerpt:

At Fort McNair, an army base located along the Potomac River in the nation's capital, a chance reunion takes place one day between two former POWs. It's the spring of 1974, and Navy commander John Sidney McCain III has returned home from the experience in Hanoi that, according to legend, transformed him from a callow and reckless youth into a serious man of patriotism and purpose. Walking along the grounds at Fort McNair, McCain runs into John Dramesi, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was also imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam.

...
"I'm going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran."
"Why are you going to the Middle East?" McCain asks, dismissively.
"It's a place we're probably going to have some problems," Dramesi says.
"Why? Where are you going to, John?"
"Oh, I'm going to Rio."
"What the hell are you going to Rio for?"
McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.
"I got a better chance of getting laid."

Dramesi, who went on to serve as chief war planner for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and commander of a wing of the Strategic Air Command, was not surprised. "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."

Sorry to disappoint you not every industry has moved to c#.

In our industry (option trading) we write software that needs to "compete" with other companies. Each successfull trade could yield anywhere from 1,000 to 1,000,000.

When dealing with many IT when speaking of C# they say it is fast. There standard of measurement is the naked eye. Our standard of measurement is if we get the trades or not.

Microsoft computers are far slower then Linux. Linux is much more reliable (computer outages can cost us 1,000,000 in a matter of minutes).

So if you speak of C++ in the same language as Fortran Cobal ... you must know it is still the fastest language out there.

C# is for more simplified gui language that is easier to program in for the novice, and meets many simple needs of companies.

But C++ still dominates when it comes to performance.

An experienced C++ program with no experience in our industry will start at around 100K, with experience 120K - 150K. This does not include bonus.

Doug said...

LOL Jean, I saw that too! But who among us (speaking for all the male partners out there) hasn't done something similar :)

That is what keeps jewelry stores in business. I sometimes pick up something "just because" or "just in case" ;)

Another crazy market day eh?

jean said...

doug,
#1 you are a gem;)
"just because" and "just in case", you are a smart man.

Obama did it and the statement is international. He could not win in any court worldwide.
It does not have to be expensive, you can pick up anything, it actually has to have a VERY special engraving.

The problem with the markets is, shortsales of properties and short refi's are on hold, who knows when this will get back on track or if they expect the bale out to stop them. No Matter, there is not enough money to do it.
Also, unemployment, low orders for big ticket items, low consumer spending, etc.(unfortunately).
I do not want to sound like a doomsdayer but 8000 on the market is what is being pushed around as a turn around point.
Something they say to invest in is Liquer companys, specifically vodka.
Another is entertainment(shows, movies, stuff like that are near home), much fewer vacations being taken.
On a high note, cannot wait for the VP debate.

This is huge since it will allow Obama to do a full court press in Ohio, Florida and Virginia.

Well, the New Yorker came out with a Presidential endorsement, and while the choice (Obama) isn't surprising, what is impressive is the starkness of the case that the editors make.

I can't think of any issue they miss on this one. It's simply signed "The Editors", and it's worth reading.

I posted that given a choice between the above average intelligent candidate and a mediocre one, Americans embrace the dumber one. And some posters here told me to go get a psychiatric exam. Read this article and tell me that we don’t embrace mediocrity. It doesn’t matter how dumb Palin is, she is a formidable candidate. Dismiss her at your peril. Her only mission tonight is to attend the debate and remain upright at the end.

Beryl said...

Joshua said...

Kujo,

Yes, C++ will give you a tighter code and will use less memory. But that was important in the day when RAM was expensive. If the speed difference between C++ and C# is important, then I recommend that you use Assembly language which is machine code. In assembly you directly program the registers. It is impossible for humans to detect any speed difference between upper level languages (anything short of machine code is upper level).

Yes, options trading requires speed. Unless there is no human interaction and you do your trades completely by computer programs, it should not matter that the code was written in C#. Even VB will perform a task one million times the speed of a human brain.

Doug said...

Am1st, interesting article. But I wonder how many people who voted for Bush as a "strong leader" do not now have "voter's remorse" (like buyer's remorse for purchasing something you later regret owning). I think Bush has helped move the characteristic "knowledgeable" up the scale a bit in voters' priorities as what makes a capable presidential candidate.

That said, IF Palin can give the appearance that she is knowledgeable about an issue tonight, without making any major gaffes, that will help her immeasurably in the post-debate spin. I rate that likelihood at less than 5%!

Kujo,
Speaking about options trading, your speed does not depend on whether your code was written in C++ or not. Much more important is the speed of connection between you and the market maker. Here is an example. You could do you computation and send in your order in 0.002 second. But between your terminal and the market maker, before the message bounces around the internet and the packet arrives, it takes 5 seconds. I am talking 2,500 times the speed of the calculation. But your completion is located nearer the market maker and has fiberoptic connection and his takes 3 seconds. So it does not matter if your machine took 0.002 or 0.004 second.

All I can say, to the "unidentified McCain campaign organizer"--I'm glad I'm not you!

Kujo said...

Amer,

I guess you don't understand. I have been in this business over 20 years. Currently I am the CIO of this company because of my experience.

I fully understand every aspect of speed, far more then you. We trade world wide, we have computers in cities we don't even have people. In some countries we are able to get in the same building as the exchange and other times we rent space from the telecom company were the lines from the exchange come into. Sometimes we have many points of access.....

But what you don't understand, so does our competition. To spell it out, there is maybe one optimal point of putting your computer and we are not the only ones there.

And right now we time things in .0000002 seconds not .002 seconds.

And constantly test languages and machines against ourselves to know what system gets the trades.

Kujo said...

Amer,

And I forgot. We don't use terminals, We are the market maker, and the trades happen at the exchange, we don't use the internet....

Also, the exchange rarely tells anyone where their computers are and many cities it is much research and sometimes trial and error to find out the best location.

When McLameBrain dissed Letterman, he picked the wrong person to diss.

Letterman is from Indiana, and has a very strong following in the state. Indiana has always been for the GOP candidate. Since 1896, the only Democratic party Presidential candidates Indiana has voted for in the General Election are Wilson in 1912 (and then only because of the 3-way race), FDR in 1932 and 1936, and LBJ in 1964.

Since Indiana has become a toss-up state this year, dissing David Letterman means McLameBrain dissed the voters of Indiana.

McLameBrain's dissing of David reminds me of a saying from my younger days, "Smooth move, Ex-Lax"!

1. So you are an option trader. Good. But you sound like McCain telling Obama that he does not understand this and that, when Obama actually knows the subject in circles around McCain.

It is probably presumptuous (and definitely defensive) of you to assert that you understand every aspect of speed more than I. Nothing in computer is measured down to 200 nanoseconds except how long it takes the electrons to travel from the Accumulator register to the Flag register within adjacent microchips within the same computer.

Your IT person would be very impressed with your understanding of numbers if you represent decimal numbers with the obligatory leading zero, viz: 0.0000002, not .0000002

2. So, you are a market maker? That is impressive. I mean that. I gave up trading because I am certain that I cannot beat the market maker. My trades no longer depend on speed and timing. I just identify turning points and place GTC orders.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Ya'll don't forget that the last part of the VP questions and answers on CBS with Katie Couric starts in a few minutes.

Kujo said...

Amer,

Sorry I must of made the same as you:

"viz: 0.0000002, not .0000002"

and added one extra Zero.

To put it in english, 2 microseconds. And that is the return time for when we receive informat and when the information leaves our computer. Then you add the Telecom time.... that as you noted is a large factor.

I personally don't trade but I run the IT. The programs do trade but we have a team of traders running them. Though I run the IT I still program as well, can't get enough of it.

Kujo said...

Kujo said...

And as for any comment to say Market Makers are part of the problem, then they really don't know what the problem is and what is a market maker.

A market maker is a company who is a middle man so when farmers in spring need money to buy their seed or machinery, they go to the market and sell there corn that they did not plant yet on the premis that they will produce crops. If there is no market maker, then no one would be there for them and they would have to pay much or recieve little.

They also exist so when you want to buy or sell a stock, there is someone there for you to trade with.

Market maker do not take risk, do not interact with the public, but provide a service.

There is not one market maker who is in trouble with the economy.

Plus our firm only works in Asia (not wall street).

But since it is brought up, I much prefer Obama over McCain even tough Obama plans on raising my taxes.

Tighter regulation in the trading market probably will hurt our business not help, but it is what is better for the country and economy.

I hear you. I too love programming. I do it as a hobby. I love C# and SQL. I also enjoyed Assembler, but it is too tedious and prone to error. C# is like sex to me. I joking tell my wife that if they begin building some parts into computers, then women would become unnecessary.

One of the things I have done is download the raw data zip files from the FEC for the presidential campaign every month. I have on my computer every person who has donated $200 or more to Obama, Clinton and McCain. I have their name, home address, amount given, and date. My last download was last night. Just translating the raw data into SQL database took 88.70 minutes. Between those three there are exactly 2,414,004 entries reported to the FEC as of September 26.

If she does another 'Couric' in her next interview (and I suspect that she will), it will just show that she was well-rehearsed TONIGHT, but it will show that she does not have the insight to handle a simple interview, let alone be able to give advice that matters to the President.

The question will now be "When will she do a Sunday Morning News interview?" If she was able to handle TONIGHT, she should be able to handle a Sunday morning interview, shouldn't she?

You’re right. Since I had mine, I have been unable to drink lemonade. That is what I drank for bowel prep. Now, when I see lemonade I am reminded of the bathroom…

Bob,
I thought that Palin provided many opportunities for ad against McCain:
1. She agrees with Cheney in the role of VP.
2. She thinks that the worst thing Cheney did was shoot some old lawyer in the face. I disagree. (It was the best thing he did). That’s a joke.
3. She agrees with Bush and she said so.
4. She criticized McCain on ANWAR.

Yes, under 50 if you have familial BRAC gene, have family history of multiple polyposis, or family history of early unset bowel carcinoma. You are right.

Now that the dust has settled, here is how I saw the debate last night:
Positive side:
1. Biden gave a good performance. In my opinion, his performance was better than Obama’s. At no time did he say the line that drove me crazy, “John (Sarah) is perfectly right.”
2. Biden had the 3 best memorable lines of the debate:
A. “Maverick he is not.”
B. “Dick Cheney is the most dangerous VP in our history.”
C. “McCain’s $5000 health care policy is the ultimate bridge to nowhere.”
3. Sarah Palin did not sway women voters. It seems that men were inclined to like her performance while women did not. Women (PUMA) are the ultimate wild card in this race.
Negative side:
1. Palin held her own. She did not come across like the babbling idiot I hoped. She may not have answered the questions. But that was not her objective. Republicans cannot win on issues. Their appeal in not to the forebrain and logic. Their appeal is to the limbic brain and emotion. In an interview when Palin rambled on and failed to answer the question, she came across as ditsy. But in a debate format, she is free to take the question and run with it as she sees fit.

Before the debate I checked the two sites that sell positions on who is ahead. That is, people actually put their money on their opinions, not the ridiculous polls I hear about all the time. At both sites, the odds were approximates 66 to 33 Obama’s favor. Immediately after the debate, there was a slight increase in Obama’s favor. As of this morning it has settled back to where just before the debate.

In conclusion, the debate was a non-event.

I'M REALLY CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT! Jean? Are you there?

Prior to the passage of the bailout bill, the DOW was UP by 250+ points. AFTER the bailout passed it has fallen and is now only up by 100 points or so (back and forth around 100) now.

Doug said...

IV, the market had already priced in the passage of the bill--if it hadn't passed, that would have sent stocks down again like a rocket. The jobs report, being worse than expected, is the "news" of the day.

IV, here is a link for you:

Doug, I understand that, but the unemployment stats had come out hours before the passage of the bill. I just find it interesting that despite the jobs news and despite the "future" vote of the bailout bill the market was up over 250 points but then fell way back.

Doug,
Right. Passage of the bill was already baked into the cake. I said that to my wife 2 days ago. I told her to expect the market to close down when the House passed it, and down another 500 points if they don’t.
