I just got called for an election survey! Some PA Research group asked the expected questions and I was happy to participate.

Texas and Arizona may just turn blue and here is one reason why.

California folks have been moving to these two States (as well as Nevada) over the past few years with the California economy suffering.

My wife and I are 2 votes for Obama in Texas that were not in the State 4 years ago. And there are many more. ;o)

Suzi, yes, traditionally speaking there is usually a concession speech, but it doesn't really mean anything until the EC casts their votes and are counted in Congress.

Leah, each state has different poll closing times. The Green Papers site has a list of each state's closing times.

Some states (including Texas) that split time zones have different closing times for the different parts of the state. (In other words, El Paso closes an hour later than the rest of the state.)

If you are in line at the poll closing time, you are supposed to be allowed to vote.

As Independent Voter noted, the media project based on a combination of exit polls and actual results. If the exit polls show a landslide, the media tend to project as soon as they have 2-3% of the results to confirm the polls. If the exit polls show a close race, they may wait until they have enough results to be certain. If the exit polls show it to be very close, they will wait until they have enough results to project a winner based on the actual results.

I have been working on a time line for my own social blog of the time frame for the evening as to what results should be in when, but it is still preliminary and could change if state polls change over the next two weeks.

Beryl said...

Ruby,

I said:
"Yeah, AJ. Donna is a lady with whom I'd like to sit and drink tea -- or something else "wink", "wink".

I interpreted AJ's comment this way:

Donna seems like a brilliant lady who can discuss serious issues but she is also very laid back. She would be just as fun to have as a friend or at a party shooting the breeze.

My comment with the winks was a reference to her comment in the video clip. She mentioned that she'd sit down and have a "little something" to drink. The "wink" is the assumption is that the drink would be liquor and not a cup of tea.

Put it both together -- Donna would be a fun lady to have over to for drinks and a serious or fun discussion.

I just found a job for Palin after the election.

It is a new football league for women, this is not a joke.
It is called the "Lingerie League"
and there are 10 teams in the league.
San Diego is called "San Diego Seduction".
No, I do not think she could play,
noway she can wear lingerie now, but as a coach. Remember the executive hockey mom thing.

I personally think we should send her an application. She is not bright enough to even be embarressed.

What do you think?

anyway, got home at midnight, and then just felt really tired today around 1 so I napped (I almost never nap).

just up and stirring again. Oh, and if we are gonna have a party with Ms. Brazile, can I come? I promise to behave myself. She's an interesting woman.

Palin's Rally in Ohio today...

Palin draws a line between 'good guys' and 'bad guys'

From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby

Palin visited the crucial battleground state of Ohio Sunday.
Palin visited the crucial battleground state of Ohio Sunday.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (CNN) — At a campaign rally designed to reflect the pastoral beauty of the heartland in autumn — with a stage set up in a red barn overlooking a sweeping field and piles of pumpkins — Sarah Palin warned the audience about the threat of terrorism, and explained that the Republican ticket should be elected because “we know who the bad guys are.”

“Help me, Ohio, to help put John McCain in the White House,” she said. “He understands. He understands you. We understand how important it is that this team be elected. For one thing, we know who the bad guys are, OK?”

That statement elicited scattered shouts of “Obama!” throughout the crowd.

“We know that in the war, it’s terrorists, terrorists who hate America and her allies and would seek to destroy us, and the bad guys are those who would support and sympathize with the terrorists,” she said. “They do not like America because of what we stand for. Liberty. Freedom. Equal rights. Those who sympathize and support those terrorists who would seek to destroy all that it is that we value, those are the bad guys, OK?”

Was Palin suggesting that Barack Obama and Joe Biden don’t understand the terrorist threat? Who exactly were the “bad guys” Palin was referring to? A spokesman for the campaign would only say that the governor was describing “nations that sympathize with terrorists, period.”

The vice presidential nominee pressed on and pointed the finger at more bad guys — the “greedy and corrupt and arrogant” mavens of Wall Street and Washington who, she said, have pushed the nation’s economy to the brink.

“We know who the good guys are, and it is you, and we will fight for you, and we will put government on your side,” she promised. “We will end the arrogant and the selfish practices of Washington and of Wall Street because your United States government is to be of the people, by the people, for the people.”

In her remarks, Palin also appeared to acknowledge the snow-balling narrative that Republican rallies have grown increasingly hostile and angry in the waning weeks of the campaign, echoing weekend remarks by McCain himself.

“All across America, I know that there’s a lot of anger right now,” she said. “There’s anger about the insider dealing of lobbyists and anger at the greed of Wall Street, and anger about the arrogance of the Washington elite. And with serious reforms to change Washington, John McCain is going to turn your anger into action.”

Obama Knocks On Doors, Surprises Voters

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/barack_obama_john_mccain_ohio_1.html

by Jill Zuckman

"Barack Obama jetted back to Ohio today to spend three days preparing for his final debate with John McCain. But before he holed up with his advisers, the candidate began knocking on doors in Holland, Ohio, making his way through a neighborhood of modest ranch and split-level homes.

His move to the Toledo area comes as a new Ohio Newspaper poll puts the race at a dead heat, 48-46 for McCain. That's tightened considerably since the group's September survey had Obama down six points, 48-42.

Sue Sekel, a 43-year old healthcare worker dressed for a day of Sunday housecleaning, opened her front door to discover Obama standing before her."

How cool is this? I sent it to Huffington but I hope the national news picks up on this.

If McCain starts doing it, he will be just copying Obama again.

I watched the Biden rally this morning and it was great. Lots of policy talk and very respectful.

Just finished watching the McCain Palin rally and it made me sick! The crowd chanted 'no obama' a couple of times during the speech and someone in the crowd had a 'Obama bin lying' sign and the tv cameras zoomed in on it at the end of the rally. Also, Hank Williams, Jr. was there and at the end of the rally they played a remake of his Family Tradition song (McCain-Palin Tradition). He refers to the other side having 'terrorist connections' it really made me pretty mad, even more so because in the old days I used to buy a lot of his music!

During McCain's speech someone shouted out something and McCain looked over to where the person was - I couldn't make out what was hollered but it will probably be on the net later (if it was offensive).

Ruby in Kansas said...

If you missed Rachel Maddow at 8:00pm cst, she comes back on at 10:00pm cst.

Mike in Maryland said...

Ruby,

The problem the Reich-wing has with Rachel is that they make two presumptions:

1. Rachel is a woman, and she is only 35 years old, therefore has no 'gravitas' as a political analyst; and/or

2. They forget (or never knew) that she is a Rhodes Scholar, and has an IQ that makes her eligible for MENSA Society membership, if she is not actually a member. Forgetting (or not knowing) this, they think she has no 'gravitas' to be a political analyst.

I love it when they come to what they think will be a knife fight, arming themselves with a water-gun that looks like a revolver, and don't realize that Rachel has an entire arsenal at her disposal, including tactical nukes if she needs them!

This reminds me of fair weather people after the oil embargo was over.

I will be able to submit one of the questions to the Rep. Feel free to throw one out there. I was thinking about how to ask how they think the Dems could be trying to create bigger gov. when the Rep. keep wanting more nat. security restrictions. What do you guys think?

As Rachel's show tonight should indicate, it's okay for conservatives to make jokes about liberals and spew hate over the radio (see e.g. Rush). However, liberals must be meek and keep our focus solely on the issues as defined by the conservatives and stand still as they beat us over the head using the language that their propagandist (e.g. Frank Luntz) have discovered sells their philosophy best.

Judge Rules Against Ohio Elections Official in Battle Over Voter Registration

Ohio Republicans have sued Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, claiming that elections integrity is at stake

AP

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

CINCINNATI -- A federal appeals court has ordered Ohio's top elections official to set up a system by Friday to verify new voters' eligibility.

The full 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has upheld an earlier ruling that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has to use other government records to check the thousands of new voters for registration fraud. A three-judge panel of the 6th Circuit had disagreed last week, but the full court's ruling trumps the panel's decision.

Ohio Republicans sued Brunner, a Democrat.

Ohio GOP Chairman Bob Bennett calls the ruling a victory for the election's integrity.
A spokesman for Brunner could not immediately be reached for comment. Brunner previously said there was no way to set up the system with such speed.

The Republicans can't stand the fact that Sen Obama leads in 4 of the former Republican states and is tied in 5 others. Sure has been a big change since I was able to get online the last time.

Olbermann has a great comment on the violent rhetoric at McCain-Palin rallies and shows McCains lame response. Huffington Post has the video. Olbermann sums up my anger at the McCain campaign.

If McCain throws in Ayers tonight maybe Obama could throw in "McCain transition chief aided Saddam in Lobbying Effort." (Huffington Post)

Personally, I would rather have issues such as the economy and education be addressed..

again, breaking news on MSNBC.com:

"cheney experiences abnormal heart rhythm, plans to visit hospital"

okay, it strikes me as odd that someone would "plan" to visit the hospital if one were experiencing a heart abnormality of any kind. I realize that it's probably something that he's had before, and thus has expectations regarding the outcome. Also, I *think* he has a pacemaker, no? so it may be maintaining a normal rhythm for the time being.

"okay, it strikes me as odd that someone would "plan" to visit the hospital if one were experiencing a heart abnormality of any kind."

Cheney has occasional afib. Plus occasional vfib.

With afib, some people, actually most people, can walk around with it, although they may be quite hampered. His pacemaker is for vfib, with vfib, immediate action is needed or you;d dead before you can reach a phone.

Karen Anne said...

I see by the Times that McShame's economic plan is based on the trickle down theory. They never learn. Every day my opinion of him gets lower.

Obama's helps the working and middle class, creates jobs, etc. and helps the elderly.

Can it please be Nov. 5th?

Vicki in Seattle said...

I know, Karen - but it just sounds odd.

I actually know people who get afib. It can be fairly mild - "oh damn, that again" or it can be debilitating. It can also lead to vfib. Longer term, the stroke risk goes up, too.

Doug said...

Hey Jean, I was just about to post "The HIll" article about a New Deal. There have been several other media references to a "New Deal" lately, given the news, not all that surprising. The next jobs report is going to be brutal.

Jeremy Rifkin's book "The End of Work" has the best analysis I have ever read of the '30's depression. In it he argues that the industrialization of labor displaced so many people so quickly that the economy became too efficient in producing goods that too few had the incomes to purchase.

The underlying problem of the housing crisis is that real wages have fallen in the last decade, and with the exception of the Clinton years, real wages have fallen quite a bit since about 1980. Incomes haven't kept up with spending. The Republicans want to blame people for getting themselves into debt they can't handle, when the real problem is in fact income growth has been stagnant or declining for the middle class, at the same time that profits as a percentage of earnings have been increasing. In part the productivity gains from the application of information technology to business have not been passed on through higher wages--instead they have gone to higher profits. The few at the top benefit, but most fall behind.

That is what is underneath the need for a New Deal, but I haven't really seen the argument made the way I think it should. People focus on the "action plan" part without really figuring out what needs to be addressed.

Doug said...

...and I forgot to say thanks for the drinking advice! I won't be able to play the "My Friends" game tonight though, soccer practice for my son will take me away for an hour during the debate :(

No, no :-) Don't scare people :-)

Afib does not lead to vfib unless there is an underlying heart problem, not just the afib electrical heart problem.

With appropriate anti-clotting meds and rate or rhythm control meds, the life expectancy for someone with afib is the same as for someone without it, all else being equal.

Karen Anne, thanks for the link to the Reich blog, which says in part:

***
"It's not as if the typical family suddenly went on a spending binge --- buying yachts and fancy cars and taking ocean cruises. No, the typical family just tried to keep going as it had before. But with real incomes dropping, and the costs of necessities like gas, heating oil, food, health insurance, and even college tuitions all soaring, the only way to keep going as before was to borrow more. You might see this as a moral failure, but I think it's more accurate to view it as an ongoing struggle to stay afloat when the boat's sinking.

The "living beyond our means" argument suggests that the answer over the long term is for American families to become more responsible and not spend more than they earn. Well, that may be necessary but it's hardly sufficient.

The real answer over the long term is to restore middle-class earnings so families don't have to go deep into debt to maintain what was a middle-class standard of living."
***

This is very well said, but is half the point I was making. What I haven't seen anywhere is an explanation of *why* middle class incomes are stagnating in what should have been a prosperous time for everyone (economic expansion and good corporate profits).

The basic Dem message that Reagonomics has failed (e.g., prosperity hasn't 'trickled down', instead pain has 'trickled up') is fine but doesn't get at the full extent of the problem. It isn't just a tax policy issue, and you can't fix it by undoing (for example) the Bush tax cuts. I like Obama's proposal to give tax relief to small businesses that generate employment, but that is playing at the margins.

IMHO, there is a deep, structural problem with the economy similar to what happened in the period leading up to the 1930's. CEO pay of 200x base wages is just an indicator of how screwed up things have gotten over time, and sorting it all out is going to be far from easy.

Doug said...

Yep, we will be bouncing around for a while.

jean

Karen Anne said...

doug,

I agree with you. I suspect the CEO to worker pay ratio we see now was probably the way it was in the days of the (previous) robber barons.

But a crucial thing is that people need jobs. Obama is going after that in at least two ways - jobs rebuilding the infrastructure and green industry jobs.

I'm not up to speed on what he's doing about outsourcing, but I think any Democratic President has to address that, and there are a bunch of reasonable ways - a tariff on goods made in countries with lax environmental regulations, tax measures, etc.

Doug said...

Karen Anne: Obama was criticized during the primaries for suggesting that 'free trade' without protecting standards is a bad thing. I think he is right on. Free trade without any reference to standards results in a race to the bottom in terms of consumer protection, environmental protection and labor standards. I am hopeful that a shift in US trade strategy will help the US domestically bring back some of those outsourced jobs. The US is Canada's biggest customer, by the way, but in most cases our labor/environmental standards are the same or better than in the US, so I am not worried! :)

Doug said...

Jean, I will definitely open a bottle of wine tonight when I am watching the highlights, and toast Obama. If McCain tries to come across aggressively in the debate, he will end up looking very foolish.

Did anyone else hear Robert Gibbs on MSNBC a few minutes ago (regarding "Joe the Plumber")?

According to Gibbs, Obama knocked on the guy's door which he was already a McShrub supporter. So, he didn't change the guy's mind. He wasn't the voter that Obama is after, it is the remaining 5% "brain dead" undecided voters he is trying to convince.

Like I said before, this came from Gibbs (an Obama supporter) but if it is true, then there was nothing Obama could do to change the guy's mind.

Independent Voter said...

By the way, the only reason I referred to the undecided voters as brain dead is because ANYONE who is still undecided after 20+ months, 3 full fledged debates (general election debates) 20+ primary debates, they have got to be brain dead.

Chris Matthews just brought this issue up.

Dear Friends,

The high gas prices over the summer and the recent shortages of gas in Middle Tennessee remind us all of the need to end our dependence on foreign energy sources. While prices have recently gone down, we need to develop the energy technologies that are cost-efficient and domestically produced.

Sincerely,

This was from Congressman Bart Gordon. It sounds to me like Main Street will become a dead end if we don't make a real change. As doug says, we need a new deal. As much as people don't like them, taxes are necessary for several things, and they should be progressive as your income rises. Our standard of living as a civilization is falling the way of the Roman Empire. Drill baby drill? Sure, if you're a woodpecker. We're not going to find many more grubs though.
