Redefining the Brand "Core Republicans"

When Dukakis ran from president, the Republicans were able to make a negative brand name out of Liberal.

Now the tide has turned. McCain has done serious damage to the Republican party in this election by rebranding the word "Republican" or "Republican Base".

Soon after he stumbled through the economic problems and saw his campaign sliding, he decided to change political strategies, go negative. The problem was he really did not have much substance to go negative with. So in order to do this they attacked with outright lies, smears, misquotes .... This did differ from other campaigns in that they did have a little substance with there smears, and the negative attacts where a stretch of something with little substance.

But not in this campaign. What did it accomplish? Well independants and "Fiscal Republicans" have been able to see through the smears, to much evidence out there for anyone with an education be fooled by. But not so by the "Republican Base". As we see the dispicable showings at Mcain/Palin campaign speeches, we see what the "Republican Base" are: Uneducated, Racist, ignorent.....

This brand will sit going forward. If you were a Conservative Republican you will think twice on rejoing the Republicans aftwards. Right Wing Religous member of the Republan Party will also reconsider there loyalities.

A successful Obama administration will put a nail in the coffin. You will could possible see a new Fiscal Conservative party form that is all inclusive as to separate themselves from the muck that is remaining.

I am currently visiting Seoul Korea, the same location I was 4 years ago. I was sitting in the business lounge of the hotel yesterday and was reminded of a conversation that took place 4 years ago at a table next to where I was sitting.

Local: So what do you think of your election.
America: Oh it is such an easy decision. Who in your right mind would vote for John Kerry. I mean all the lies about Vietnam. This guy is such a fake. Everyone knows the George Bush should be our next president.......

This guy talked forever, never listening to anything the local Korean had to say, kept interupting him. It was obvious that the local Korean did not feel the same way. He could see the US policies and the campaigning from a view that was not garbled by partisinship.

Well as I sat there this time, another conversation struck up again. And again another Republican sat with this local Korean and discuess politics. To give you a little more discription, this "American" sat in this high class business center of a very classy hotel in faided light blush shorts, button down Hawaiian shirt and hair that was not combed for what looked like days. (Its a wounder how other countries look down on Americans)

Its funny to note this time how the mode has changed.

Local: So have you been following the elections in your country, what do you think.

American: Its terrible. We have such bad candidates. I don't like either. They both stink. I won't even vote this year.

I think guess this is the best we can get from a die hard Republican.

When the story broke that the McCain/Palin ticket paid 150,000 on Palin's clothing, I said who give a hoot.

I soon realized that if it was anyone else but Palin it should be a non issue, but for Palin it is not. This is because the only qualification that the McCain camp has brought up (that has not been squashed) is that she is a Maveric against wasteful spending.

The funny think here all the cloths are owned by the RNC (not McCain/Palin ticket) and must be returned to them. I truely believed that she thought she would keep the clothing, since she even bought stuff, using RNC money, for her baby. Now I could understand trying to get some professional looking suites, but Baby Cloths? I don' think anyone even noticed what the kid was wearing.

Doc Jess-

Our contest on the open thread has been going on now for several months.

Everyone also can enter the DCW contest that is on the front page of DCW, but those numbers will not effect our Open Thread Contest.

There are two separate contests going on - DCW is giving away a prize - us folks here on the Open Thread don't have a prize to give - just bragging rights for the winner!

DocJess said...

Leah - Sometimes tone gets lost on the internet, and I don't mean to come across in a bad way. (My snarkiness for today is limited to the fact that I thought it was bad enough that the RNC spent $150,000 for clothes, but now I've seen the make-up bill...for BOTH of them)

Anyway -- The reason for posting on the Open Thread about the contest was nothing other than making sure that people who might read the Open Thread but not the main page knew that there was a contest, so that they can enter, and maybe win the prize. It was in no way intended to be mean, nor to denigrate the Open Thread contest.

More bad news for 'Congresswoman' Bachmann of Minnesota - Several sources in Minnesota say the National Republican Congressional Committee is pulling all ads in support of her.

Says a lot when fellow travelers turn their back on her!

The total that Tinklenberg has raised since the Friday Hardball is now being reported at $1 million, plus the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is investing another $1 million into the campaign.

Add in that the Cook Political Report — one of the most highly respected handicappers of Congressional races — moved the race from likely Republican lean Republican, and then to toss up yesterday.

I don't like Mathews habit of stomping over the guests when they try to talk - he does it all the time in the same manner as most Reich-wing interviewers have perfected - but he CAN get the people to tell us their 'inner truth' in a very unflattering light, and in this case, it was a justified grilling of a Reich-wing nut.

Interesting interview between Brian Williams and McFalin.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/22/chuck-todd-on-mccain-pali_n_137014.html

The article is about how they McCain and Palin seem awkward together, but what interesting is the video does not really cover that. The video instean focus's in on Palin answering what does it mean to have meetings without preconditions.

She goes on ranting about how this means that you don't go into meetings unprepared, just to go shoot the breeze.

I.E. she does not understand what preconditions means.

Kujo said...

When I heard the interview on Hardball with Bachman, I did not think too much about it. I'd seen to many interviews with Bachman and each time I felt she had crossed that line and still survived. Its about time she gets what she diserves.

If you listened to that interview, she (like McFalin) has said that because Obama choose to be on the board with Ayers, that he is UnAmerican because Ayers is UnAmerican. Well I guess you can say then all of UofC is UnAmerican. All of the US Senate is UnAmerican, including McCain. Obama even worked on a bill with McCain, that makes him a ring-leader.....

Congratulations Pablo! I've been away for a while too while Canada very nearly gave a majority government to the Leo Strauss inspired conservatives. We did dodge that bullet (but just barely) and the conservatives are back in their place with a minority. We couldn't defeat them though and they won the election even though they received less than 40% of the vote.

Here is a link to the article that will appear in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, it's a nice peek behind the curtain of McCain's sad campaign: The Making (and Remaking) of McCain

Doc Pickles said...

If this is any indication then Obama's request to ask people you know to vote early is paying off. The latest from Dade County, where voters learned a thing or two about making sure their votes count in 2000.

"The Miami Herald sent reporters on Wednesday to vote early in this year's presidential election.

They quickly discovered the long lines to vote had not disappeared. In Miami-Dade, the wait was from about an hour to 90 minutes. In Broward, the wait was longer -- more than four hours in at least one location."

http://www.miamiherald.com/416/story/737083.html

I hope Obama wins in North Carolina, that would be so sweet.

The sooner you get your vote in there the sooner there's space for the next voter. All those months of signing up new members during the nomination is really paying dividends now.

Twelve days to go now! Stay positive and stay determined!

I was down for 304 before the Wall Street meltdown.

Now I'm looking at the RCP map and shaking my head at how terribly things have gone for McCain since he went to Washington to take credit for the bailout package that never came. Even before the toss-up states Obama is at 306. One of the reasons I held off posting here for so long was that anything I could say would be too positive and overconfident.

My second guess has McCain taking Indiana but Obama taking Nevada, Virginia, and North Carolina (f.u. Jesse Helms!) which brings me all the way up to 364.

The most interesting part of the election now is the race for 60 in the senate. This can't possibly happen because it's time to throw Joe Leiberman out of the party once and for all.

I don't know a single person in Canada who is rooting for McCain, not one, and we're all talking about the election up here. Like I said before a long time ago, the world wants to love you again America! (except for Al-Qaida, apparently, who are cheering for McCain of course)

I actually love the Joe the Plumber position that McCain is taking.

Here McCain is laying his campaign on the thought that middle class america does not want the rich to pay more taxes.

Now the whole tax concept is really misquoted.

Some think that we should have the same tax rate for everyone. But we don't have this and we never did (at least not in my life time). The way I like to think of the tax system is that we do all pay the same rate, but then a discount is provided at lower levels of income to help people raise standard of living.

If the Joe the Plumbers of the world do not like this, I have no problems with him paying the full tax (appearently he would not have a problem because he does not pay taxes anyway).

I also like the comment by some people who say I pay my fair share and I don't need a handout. The problem is everyones fair share is NOT ENOUGH, look at the deficit. So the question is do you want to pay more!

Now I realize on this site I am preaching to the choir, but still worth noting.

The whole thing seems odd. Why is the B backwards? Already people are speculating she did it in a mirror, which would explain that.

Why, if the guy was a psychopath enough to do that, is her face basically lightly scratched as opposed to what you would expect from someone who reportedly "kicked and punched her repeatedly?" Someone like that is not going to be careful using a knife.

My apologies to her if this is real, but it sounds like it is someone going off the deep end, of which the McCain campaign seems to have a substantial supply.

Remember a few weeks ago someone had mentioned that McShrub/Palin were on the New York ballot more than once? New York offers what is known as "cross-endorsement" or "open-ballot" voting. This is where a candidate(s) can be placed on the ballot multiple times under different party names. Example: McShrub/Palin are listed as "Republican" "Independent" and "Conservative" (where the hell they got Independent I have no clue, we ALL know they surely don't fall into that category). BUT Obama/Biden are also listed multiple times on the New York ballot. Granted they are only listed twice but they are listed as "Democrat" and "Working Families".

I especially like the second one. It really makes it look as though they are truly looking out for US, the working families......I'm not saying it is an illusion because I don't think that at all, all I'm saying is that people who are undecided - or not really paying attention - may go into the voting booth, take a look, and say, "you know what? We are a working family" and pull that lever for Obama. :)

Here is a link to the sample ballot I was looking at.

Doing the happy dance
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-earlyvoting25-2008oct25,0,1615606.story

"Early voting continues in many states, so the numbers can change. But Obama seems well-positioned in several Republican-leaning states that have the potential to broaden his path to the magic number of 270 electoral votes.

In North Carolina, early voting shows Obama's party in the lead. Of the 930,516 people who have voted early, 56% are Democrats and 27% Republican. Blacks account for 21% of North Carolina's registered voters but make up 28% of those who've voted early.

In Georgia, which hasn't chosen a Democratic presidential candidate since Bill Clinton in 1992, African Americans are voting in disproportionately high numbers. Of the 967,210 people who've voted early, 35% are black, state data show. By contrast, blacks constituted only about 25% of the total that voted for president in 2004.

Iowa voted for President Bush in 2004, but the Obama campaign hopes to win the state. Early voting figures bode well for that. About 51% of the 277,909 Iowans who've voted early are Democrats, compared with 28% Republicans."

Inspiration:

As many of us have been inspired by BHO, I would like to an inspiration story (on a much smaller scale) that really inspires me.

I live in a town where sports are very competitive, as many towns across our country. This week a small event occured that has actually created a little buzz through our town. My son made his middle school (7th grade) basketball team. Now I know I am a proud father, but there of course is a little more to the story. He is the smallest boy in the school (including 6th grade). He still wears youth medium while other member of the team are wearing adult larges.

It is really not a story about luck, he has practiced couple times a week for over 3 years in a very advance training programs. He loves to play the game.

The only real advise I have told him was for him to get recognized, he would have to work harder, try harder and play harder then everyone else. This may seem to be unfair and it is, to the other boys. You will learn how to work hard to get ahead in life while others will be givin a free pass and find it difficult later in life.

Kujo said...

Small delema, need help.

Ok for years I enjoyed get all setup to watch the returns come in on election eve (though until 2 years ago, I had not enjoyed the results). I usuall will stay up all night long until the last state result appears. I had planned on getting all setup again in front of the big screen with all my snacks at hand.

But now Obama is opened up his election day party to the public. you see I live in a Chicago Suburb and work at the Sears tower, a few blocks away from the grant park were he will be.

This is history. How can I miss it Could you imagin being at Dr. Kings I have a dream speech. Standing in from of FDR when he said we have nothing to fear but fear itself, to be in front of JFK when he said Ich bin ein Berliner, or that we will go to the moon before the end of the decade. To be next to Dan Quayle when he said "What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

But at the same time how could I miss Fox news saying "Just in Ohio is now projected for Obama", Wolf Blitzer saying "He's definately probably has a good chance of Winning this election", Palin saying "We are being taken over by Communists!!!", Oberman saying "See I told you so", Lou Dobs saying "Mexico has now been projected OBAMA", McCain saying "Grrrrrrrrrrr, get out of my way you (*&*(&&*(", and of course Jack Cafferty saying "What we can derive from these results is that 55% of Americans have a brain"

what to do? what to do?

Karen Anne said...

Kujo, Go to the party and record whatever channel you most want to see for later. Stuff will probably show up on youtube or network sites anyway. Man, I envy you the chance to be there in person.

Suzi, what are you thinking, there will be monkey business with the early ballots? I'm paranoid too.

Beryl, I print off the sample ballot for my area from the Secy of State's website and mark it at home at my leisure, then take it to the polls with me.

More confirmation that Virginia is definitely leaning for Obama, and that North Carolina and Florida are in play. From the Sunday edition of the Baltimore Sun:

Obama's strength highlights changes in the South

SUFFOLK, VA. - The solid South could be cracking beneath John McCain's feet.

Southern support for Barack Obama is building in states that have been reliably Republican for decades, polls show, and they might deliver a decisive verdict in next week's election.

Virginia hasn't gone Democratic for president in 44 years, but it is leaning Obama's way. He holds a narrower edge in other Southern battlegrounds: North Carolina, last carried by a Democrat in 1976, and Florida, which decided the 2000 race.

Re: SNL

I thought the opening (Biden/Murtha) was NOT funny at all.

The "Maya" gal that played Michelle Obama wasn't anything at all like Michelle - but the song 'Solid as Barack' was pretty good though.

Weekend update was 'okay' but I wish they'd get rid of the folks that act like dumbos (the guy that doesn't finish sentences, and a few others of the unfunny folks that sit there at the desk from time to time).

SNL just isn't at all like it was in the 70's and 80's. In the past few shows they'd had 'fartface' and 'vomiting' and I think that is more for the junior-high school crowd!

The Vincent Price skit was pretty funny (and it had a feel of the old SNL), but I am sure that many of the young folks have no idea who James Mason, etc. are.

After the election I will NOT be watching SNL anymore.

Hi Vikki in Seattle that is amazing news about North Carolina! I'm cheering so much for Obama to win in Jesse Helms' state, it would mean so much.

There is a lot going on in this election but for me personally an Obama victory in North Carolina would be the sweetest win in this election.

An Obama victory in Texas would be jaw-dropping too. Hey, you just never know.

Mike in Maryland said...

With some of the national polls starting to tighten just a bit (at least on a day-to-day basis), the trolls are coming back out over at Pollster.com.

So today, I posted a challenge to them, as follows:

Anyone on the right-wing want to give us the route to 270 Electoral College votes that McLameBrain has?

What states will he win, those states adding up to 270 EC votes?

Name them, or STFU.

And if you include Pennsylvania in that route to 270, tell us how he's going to win the state, when the composite polling on Pollster.com currently shows him down by 12.7 points in Pennsylvania, and has shown him down by double digits every day for several consecutive weeks.

Obama's route:

'Kerry states' (without NH, the weakest of the 'Kerry state'), plus Iowa, plus Virginia gives him 268. Add ANY state, and he's over 270. Add just New Hampshire, and he's at 272. Add just New Mexico, and he's at 273. Add just Colorado and he's at 277. Add just North Carolina and he's at 283. Add just Ohio and he's at 288. Add just Florida and he's at 289. And there are several more states where he's in the lead to some extent.

If Obama wins the 'Kerry states', including NH, he needs just Iowa and Virginia, or Iowa and New Mexico plus one more state, or Iowa and North Carolina, or Iowa and Ohio, or Iowa and Florida, or ..., or ..., or ..., etc., etc., etc.

Sorry, right-wingers. McLameBrain will have to draw four cards to a Royal Flush to have the remotest chance of sweeping all the states he needs to win the 270 EC votes to win this election.

Again, show us the route, or STFU.

I'm sure I'll get 100 well-thought-out responses to my post (in my dreams - LOL).

Over at www.fivethirtyeight.com they just posted a great piece on North Carolina. The whole piece is pretty inspiring (but not an excuse to slack off!) and this especially jumped out at me:

"According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, by Sunday 1,078,710 had voted early in the Tarheel State, compared with only 984,000 ballots in the entire early voting period in 2004. We're only halfway through the early vote. Something big is happening in North Carolina this time, a state George W. Bush carried by over 12 points in 2004."

James Dobson's organization, Focus on the Family Action, recently published a letter purporting to offer a vision of 2012 after four years of an Obama administration. This letter, filled with doomsday projections, is fearmongering of the worst kind - a sensationalist fiction with almost no basis in reality.

How does it reflect on our Christian witness in the world to see self-described Christian leaders engage in such blatant fearmongering? When Americans read Dobson's letter, do you think they'll come away thinking better of Christianity - or worse?

James Dobson should hear from those in the faith community that find this tactic appalling. Please tell James Dobson and Focus on the Family how you feel.

As Christians we have been choosing hope over fear for 2000 years. Our public witness should reflect our deepest hopes, not provoke unfounded fears.

We've set up a form below that will send an email message to Focus on the Family's Citizen Link email address.

I think if he is called out to prove that he can't create a million jobs in a few months, it will show he is a lier and has poor judgement and is plain incompetent.

Hey Jean, I haven't been monitoring this thread much the past few days--out of town. But I did see your comment on the Chargers... I did take the Saints this week!

Unlike the Dems, the Chargers aren't playing defense very well at all. I am impressed by how "on it" the Dems are around GOTV and pushing back efforts to disqualify voters. This is not 2004!

Cheers..

Good, because you know I loss with the Chargers.

Doug - I agree - there was some good news for Georgia today - here's what a Fed Judicial Panel ruled today: "ATLANTA (AP) - A three-judge federal panel says Georgia should have sought U.S. Justice Department approval before implementing a new process of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check voters' immigration status.

Attorneys were sorting out whether the 27-page ruling means Georgia must immediately stop doing the checks. Voting officials have defended them as a way to verify that citizens are eligible to vote.

The panel on Monday ordered Georgia officials to swiftly notify voters whose names were flagged as ineligible that they can still cast paper ballots on Nov. 4.

Georgia is one of several states that needs federal approval before changing election policy because of a history of discriminatory voting practices.

It also blocks the state from removing flagged names from voter lists unless voters say in writing that they are ineligible."

Jean - You beat me to the punch! I guess I had a more long winded post than you. But it is still great news to share. It could be a major factor here - many who have been denied in early voting - will get another chance to vote during the election cycle. That is one reason everyone should do early voting. ALSO I WOULD EMPHASIZE WHAT THE DEMOCRAT'S LEGAL TEAM STATED - DO NOT ACCEPT A PROVISIONAL BALLOT. CALL THE CNN OR MSNBC VOTING HELP LINE IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS AND THEY WILL FOLLOW UP QUICKLY IN YOUR AREA. THEY ARE REALLY PUSHING TO ENSURE THAT THEY PROVIDE COVERAGE OF VOTING SUPPRESSION.

I got tickled about a caller on Supertalk99.7. It's TN's version of Faux Noise. It was pointed out that we should be helping the poor, not as socialists, but as responsible citizens. "Uncle" Phil Valentine couldn't get around the logic of that, especially since the caller had the Bible passages ready to quote to him.

Shows where the Republican party is headed.

Lets get real. The Republican pundants and reporters are talking up Palin because they still want McShame to win. Once the election is over, even Guliani will be talking how she brought the ticket down. She will go back to Alaska and face possible impeachment. Then probably in 2 years run a re-election bid against the guy she had fired.

Hey Jean, sorry to see you picked Indy. The power has shifted in the AFC South, kind of like the changes that have occurred in the election cycle. I just came home from the pub watching the Titans take control of the division--they are going to be tough in the playoffs with that defense. Indy, I am afraid, will not be in the playoffs this year.

I know this sounds lame after the game, so I will make some bold predictions for next week: Detroit (they have to win sometime), Tampa, NY Giants, and Washington on Monday night.

Cheers!

Washington next Monday against the Steelers??

Don't you know the history of that game???

Since before the Deadskins moved to DC in 1937, if the Deadskins win their final home game before a Presidential election, the incumbent party wins. There was one exception - 2004 when the Deadskins lost to Green Bay, but Dubya still won.

I'll be rooting for the Steelers (probably for the only time this season) to win the Monday night game.

Counting down the days:

Tuesday -- Can Palin talk more about her clothing situation and more aides talk about the disfunctional campaign?

Wednesday -- The big can't avoid tv ads.

Thursday -- Discussion about the big can't avoid tv ads and the GNP numbers for the third quarter.

Friday -- Halloween (nobody at home to watch any of the news).

That leaves us just three other days to control the news cycle.

Republican Party.

There are actually some parts of the Republican party that I like. I would say I am fiscal concervative. I would like to see gov spending decreased, but taxes should be based on spending. I would like to see new programs replace bad programs instead of just adding to the budget...

But this is just a small faction of the Republican Party. I would guess for the most part Romney and Hagel would be included in this area.

Then there is the Machine part of the Replican Party. This is the part that has been ruling and "using" the rest of the party. "Using" in the way of pretending to have the same cause but are using them to "spread the wealth" from the middle class to their pockets.

There is also the religous portion of the party. So engrossed with there religion that they really don't care about anything else (so not all Religious people). Know nothing about economics, word trade.

And a new faction of the party, or hidden faction just coming out this year or having a rebirth. This is more or less the racists part of the party.

Now its funny listening to the party emploding. There is a article on Huffington about how the Repubs will excomunicate everyone who has disavoid Palin.

The new Palin faction is a combination of the religous and the racists part of the party (funny mix). I'd like to call this the WWF or the World Wrestling Federation. This part of the party is focused on fake politics. Say anything. Palin could say Spread the Wealth is bad, when last week she would say the same thing about Alaska and Oil. Palin would say Dems are Tax and Spend, even though the Dems are not that have have not been for decades. Does not matter if it is true, just say it. Just like Wrestling. They all know it is fake and lies, but they all love it anyway.

Another name for the Party will be the Embarrassment party. Usually I'd say about 30% of the people are diehard Repubicans and 30% diehard Dems.

You will probably see many of the Republicans volentary move over to the other side, not care that they are excommunicated.

You think 60 is a reach in the Senate, it might be possible that another 10 come over after the elections. Would that not be funny.

suzihussein22 said...

m in md-I don't usually root for the Redskins either(sorry Vicki).

Kujo the analyst. I liked some of your perspective.

I'll just say I see machine aspects to any political function of any government.

I was so sad to see the 8 yr. old be able to test an uzi at a gun show in MA. He didn't survive. Common sense should have prevailed just knowing the kick to that weapon. The cynical part of me is thinking Palin would be interested in it.

hey, I was talking to the local district coordinator up here last night, we are about to have a citizen's revolt here in our little town. I asked her who our PCO is, and apparently it's an older woman (defined as anyone older than me) who doesn't do anything and hasn't been particularly involved. Also, apparently there are three districts that have NO PCOs - she asked me if I'd like to volunteer as an acting PCO for one of them.

anyway, our little city council has apparently been lying to the state, and is being unresponsive to local citizenry. People on the verge of storming city hall with pitchforks and torches. Well, almost. :-)

I told her that she has organized a crew of volunteers, the time to organize for the spring council elections is within one week of next weeks' election. she liked that idea!

Kujo said...

First and foremost I must appologies to the World Wildlife Federation.

In my previous post I noted that there was one part of the Republican party that I liked. The fiscal concervative. The problem with this statement is that it appears that this idea was unique to the Republicans. I don't belive this to be so. Under the Clinton administration, the Democratic party showed its strength in economics.

If Obama wins, I think the final nail on the Republican coffin would be for Obama to really do a hatchet job on government spending (on programs that spend more to administrate then having those resorces getting to the intended targets) while increasing important programs for education, health care. Then buy the end of his 8th year, taxes would start to be reduced, not because of a political purpose, but because we have run a surplus for three years.

In the past, polititians have felt the need to compromise in order to get there bill past. Keep that program going for the Senetor in X state so you can keep the program that helps your client in Y state.

One of the most interesting thing his how efficent Obama has been in running his campaign. His use of the web, his ability to raise large amoung of cash from a completely new source of funding.

With this new approach to getting to the WhiteHouse, An Obama administration would feel gratitute to the old establishment, the lobbiest .... This would really give his administration the ability to change the way things work.

In addition, if he would be able to pull off a landslide victory, he would also would build a power over other democratic congressmen and Senetors. He could use this leverage to help remove many unneeded programs.

Doug said...

Mike in M, Indy--ACK!!! I somehow did not know about the connection between the Redskins and the election! For anyone interested, here is a link to it:

http://www.wusa9.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=34391

Since I have already handed in my picks for this week, I am left to scramble out of the pocket--this is a transformational election and many of the old patterns are being challenged. If Virginia and Missouri can go blue, then Washington can win without predicting an incumbent victory!

There is also the correlation/causation thing... the sun coming up in the morning has been a good predictor of my breathing for the last (almost) 50 years, but it certainly hasn't been the cause... LOL

But I will not be unhappy if Pittsburgh manages to pull out a victory next Monday, just to keep "the streak" intact.

Cheers

tmess2 said...

Sometimes the Republican spin during this election reminds me of the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland.

Yes, they can believe seven impossible things before breakfast each morning. Every day, they say the race is tightening. Today, the RCP average shows a margin of 7.2. On October 19th, that margin was 5.6.

More important than the average has been the range within the margin of error for all of the polls. For the past three weeks, that number has been between 48 and 50 for Obama and 42 and 44 for McCain.

As shown by the folks over on 538, Democrats are working hard all over the country. We have succeeded in registering large numbers of new voters. (In Missoui, they have just released the new numbers and it appears that approximately 30% of new voters are in the 18-24 age group). We are now going to continue to work hard to get those voters to the polls.

Meanwhile the Republicans are spending money defending Montana.

I am not going to get over-confident and ease up because we have tons of local races all over the country within our grasp. We can get to 60 in the Senate. We can win some state races. We can get control of state legislatures and oounty courthouses.

Doug said...

About the polls so far this morning... the one that jumps out is the PEW poll (+15 for Obama). This article on the PEW site is indicating that Obama leads by 19% among people who have already voted:

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1008/mccain-support-continues-downward-spiral

It is really hard to know how real any of the polls are until the votes are counted, given the changes in the electorate, but this is a really good sign!
