Well guys I think the garbage is starting. The AP just reported that Barack's aunt is living illegally in the US in Boston. I knew the Republicans (with the help of the administration) were about to stir up some BS. Thier first salvo was fired tonight.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Mike-

I don't think the 'little' smears will make it on the TV at this point.

Watching CNN and MSNBC today they were focused more on the voting lines and the electoral college map, etc.

In my opinion any new smears are not going to have any effect - unless it is something 'big' as in a 'huge' scandal.

Whatever is on the news Saturday and Sunday will be old news by Monday when the 'majority' of folks watch TV - and Tuesday is election day ;)

Just my opinion.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

I also wanted to add that the inner circle of Senator Obama's family is very small.

There was Obama's mother (who has passed away), Obamam's grandfather, his mother's father (who has passed away), Obama's grandmother that lives in Hawaii. and Obama's half-sister that lives in Hawaii with her husband and child.

All of the Kenyan folks are not people that Obama grew up with or ones that he has any close connection with. Even the grandmother in Kenyan is not a close relative to Obama because she is a wife of Obama's dead grandfather and she is not blood related to Obama.

I don't think the Boston aunt is an issue at all.

Leah - I'll be glad when Wednesday gets here. I have been on political overload for a week now. All I do is watch the polls. Maybe then I won't be glued to my laptop or the TV. It will be time for a real vacation.

Mike-in-GA said...

Leah - I hope you are right but I just have a feeling that the Republicans will make sure this hits the news channels because they need whatever they can to create a cloud. I just hope that Barack doesn't back himself into a corner by claiming he doesn't know anything about it. If they catch him in a lie - it will create a stir because he talked about her in his memoirs. I know how slimy the Republicans can be with this kind of BS.

Leah - Hillary will not get Reid's job. There are way too many other senators with seniority in the senate.

Senate majority leader is not a position based on seniority, if it were Robert Byrd would hold the position. And yes, I already knew the president doesn't pick the Senate Majority Leader nor does he pick Speaker of the House. All I was saying is that I think HRC would make a GREAT Senate Majority Leader. And the reason I think she would make a great SML is because she has a spine to stand up against the president (regardless of who that president is) if she feels he/she is wrong in their judgment.

Reid is spineless, he doesn't stand by his convictions - in this manner he is much like John McShrub. He's too wishy-washy - "we may revisit LIEberman's position within the Democratic Caucus." What the effing kind of #### is that? Either you kick him to the curb or you don't. And in my opinion LIEberman has GOT TO GO! He deserves zero respect and NO leadership roles in any committees.

The good news is that my Republican, Reagan-worshipping sister and BIL "voted for change". They didn't explicitly say they voted for Obama but neither like Palin.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

Indy-

Yep the Senate majority leader is not a position based on seniority, BUT what I was trying to say (and didn't very well) is that there are too many other senators with seniority that would be picked before HRC would be. HRC hasn't been in the Senate long enough - and Byrd has been there too long ;)

Sarkozy calling...

Uh-oh. The Canada Press (the Canadian version of AP) reports:

MONTREAL — A Quebec comedy duo notorious for prank calls to celebrities and heads of state has reached Sarah Palin, convincing the Republican vice-presidential nominee she was speaking with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

In the interview, which lasts about six minutes, Palin and the pranksters discuss politics, pundits, and the dangers of hunting with current vice-president Dick Cheney.

The Masked Avengers, who have a regular show on Montreal radio station CKOI, intend to air the full interview on the eve of the U.S. elections.

The well-known duo of Sebastien Trudel and Marc-Antoine Audette have also tricked Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and French president Jacques Chirac.

Sorry I've been absent. Hope all goes well.

I felt the need to say how much John McCain has changed, and how much I've grown to despise him. I cannot believe that's the same man I voted for 8 years ago.

He, and not Joe, the not plumber... saying Obama would be the end of Israel, and calling him a Communist... and then having the balls to get angry that people have called out not Joe the not plumber for not being Joe, nor being a plumber, and not paying his taxes....
WHAT!?!?!?

I hate these people. I hope he loses Arizona.

P.S. I'm still not your damn friend John McCain!

I swear that I have never known about a more exceptional political candidate than Obama. In spite of the entire right wing scouring this man’s past, they have been unable to find any skeleton. All they can come up with is that he has met or was acquainted with someone with whom we may have an issue. But nothing about the man himself. I would like to hold McCain to a similar level of accountability for not just his own actions but that of everyone with whom he has met. I am a physician and must at all times maintain a high degree of conduct. But I am certain that my path has crossed with people worse than any Obama has met.

There has never been a candidate as good as Obama.

Proposition 8 would eliminate the right of Same-Sex Couples to marry. It changes the California Constitution so that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid in California. On Proposition 8, are you ... Certain to vote yes? Certain to vote no? Or not certain?

47% Yes
50% No

Mike - It is going to be a nail biter. The ONLY problem that I foresee is a huge military vote in favor of the measure. The Mormons and the Catholics have been shoveling money, hand over fist, into the "Yes" campaign. And when I say shoveling, I mean millions upon millions. The funding for "No" is so limited. And ALL they are doing is pushing through lie after lie about the amendment stating that schools would be forced to teach same-sex marriage in the classroom and saying that parents don't have an opportunity to opt-out. Both of these claims are FALSE. It just chaps my ass that they make the claim that same-sex marriage will devastate the "sanctity of marriage" despite the fact that they ONLY thing that devastates the "sanctity of marriage" is DIVORCE. But NO they don't want to talk about that.

I still say that if Prop 8 passes, I will work to put an initiative on the ballot to BAN DIVORCE. If they are so "high and mighty" that they want to claim that we (gays) will wreck their marriage, then I say they are STUCK with their spouse until they move OUT of our state.

Hey you guys! Please give me your thoughts on what I'm about to say. (Please keep in mind that this is my first "election", so don't laugh at my idea) It seems to me that the polls are probably assumptions that Democrats will vote Democrat, Republicans will vote Republican, and Independents could go either way. Okay, so I think the percentage of Republicans voting Democrat is far greater than the percentage Democrats voting Republican, and with a pretty good percentage of Independents voting Democrat, that's when mouths will drop all over the world when they see the OBAMA LANDSLIDE!!

Emit - Three weeks ago we in Georgia were skeptical - but it is getting much closer than the Republicans ever thought it could be. The most important thing that could come out of this is that Saxby Chambliss could be upset. In Georgia there is a requirement for a simple majority or they will have to have a "runoff". If that happens it could be possible to put the Senate Democrats at the "60 member filibuster-proof" number. Only question is whether the African American community would come out as strong in a runoff or if the 7% of Barr's support would go Republican. We are trying hard to make it happen.

Just over a month and we'll be together, hopefully to never be apart again! Hit another big snag with immigration over on this side of the water, but I have Senator Webb's office involved, and hopefully they'll be able to clear things up for me.

If not, hopefully immigration on that side the water will go smoother, and I'll just say goodbye to the USA. Whatever, my wife and child are more important than my country.

I agree Dave and Beryl,

I couldn't help but get angry at Hillary while they were replaying all the crap. Those were wounds that I was completely happy forgetting... at least for the time being.

Karen Anne said...

Is the MSNBC thing on video somewhere? What was their justification for dragging old stuff up?

I'm not mad at Hillary, although I was during the primary campaign, because I thought she was damaging Obama's chance in the general. She has really been a trooper lately.

Looking back, she must have been horribly disappointed and so went a bit overboard. Should have run a better campaign. Next time she will. We all screwup and do better next time (except for Republicans.)

Wow, that Halloween candy woman is unbalanced. And I was reading some Times article about McCain supporters today where some recent immigrant was worried Obama would turn the country into something like an old Soviet republic. Who's the one supporting torture? I would have said to her.

I think this is the "otherness" thing coming into play. Did anyone say stuff like that about Kerry?

Democrats, the party with more than one brain cell to rub together.

Kujo said...

I watched the MSNBC recap of the primary/election. I was not disappointed at all in HRC.

It was because of HRC that all the issues like Rev Wright already came up taking away amo from McCain/The Republicans.

It also helped Obama create a ground team in all 50 states.

Plus in all 50 states, people were listening to Obama's and HRC message, so when the Republicans lied about it, not as many people fell for it.

Beryl said...

apis,
I wish you speedy resolution to your immigration snag.

Regarding SNL - ITA on the Keith O impersonation -- it was terrific. I adore Keith but he does connect some dots in ways that leave me saying... "hmmmm". McPalin's sketches were really funny. I only hope it doesn't help him get more votes. As funny as he is (I can admit that), he should still never be President. Maybe they should have him just become a SNL regular.

Kujo - I agree with your assessment of how the HRC campaign really helped Obama. She took him to task and helped him to be a better campaigner. I think Obama admitted that several times also.

Emit R Detsaw said...

Anyone else noticing the quirky and erratic body language of McLameBrain lately when he's at a campaign event and trying to get the crowd's spirit up - the strange hand and arm movements, the bouncing on the balls of his feet? I don't remember that he did that in the past, only in the last week or two.

I do NOT think it's a medical problem. I think he's trying to buoy up the crowd, to make them think it's a close race, but deep down he knows it's a lost campaign, and thus the quirky body language.

Mike

apissedant said...

Mike,
Actually he's been doing some of that weird body movement for months now. He is noticeably uncomfortable, and I think he's trying to seem more fun, young, and vibrant than he actually is. Unfortunately for him, he really really isn't, and he just ends up looking awkward.
I definitely remember one from a few months ago where he walked on stage and the whole place was packed, and he raised his hand to wave, well, he came as close as he can to raising his hand after the whole Vietnam thing, and then made a couple of jumps to try to make sure everyone could see him waving hello and smiling. It was one of the most awkward things I've seen.

As to the MSNBC thing, I can see some of your points, but not all. Airing all the dirty laundry early was definitely good for things like Rev. Wright. The silly allegations like him just being a bag of wind with no real substance behind it, and McCain being qualified for Presidency but not him, well those statements were not helpful and completely unnecessary.
Those statements aren't controversies, they are opinions, and opinions don't have a shelf life. The end result is those statements have been used by Republicans without stop. They picked up on every single one of them, and it has been their entire battle cry. Those two statements definitely still had teeth and definitely stuck in the public mind. I still hear that Obama has no experience and is just a bunch of pretty speeches from independents when I talk to them now.

Ruby in Kansas said...

Mike, I've noticed the quirky and erractic body language for quite some time. I thought he was trying to force his body to make movements despite his war injuries. I've also noticed the "bouncing" on his feet, but I figured he does it sometimes to try and make up for the limitation of his arms.....like trying to appear as though he's waving at a "higher level" than what he really is. Barack Obama's birth certificate is irrelevant. Let's pretend he was born overseas, who cares? John McCain was born overseas too. The United State Constitution requires that a President is a natural born citizen. A natural born citizen has been defined as being born a U.S. citizen. Under current U.S. laws, a person is born a U.S. citizen if either parent is a U.S. citizen, OR if they are born in the United States. Since Barack Obama's mother was a U.S. citizen at the time of his birth, he is a natural born citizen, regardless of the location of his birth. I have specifically researched this, and spoken with USCIS officials about it, as my child will not be born in the United States.

Do you have any other moot points you'd like to discuss?

Considering that there are republicans endorsing Obama and newspapers in Alaska and Arizona endorsing Obama - America is not so divided that we can't come together - as some people might think ;)

We are not red America or blue America - we are the UNITED States of America.

November 4th America will turn PURPLE! ONE NATION :)

Here's an interesting website that uses statistical modelling to project the timeline for Tuesday night. It uses regression modelling to predict the timeline for when the various states will be called (given poll closing times, tightness of races, and time lag from tipping point to call.) It presents its findings in a video of a powerpoint presentation - a little less than 10 minutes long, of which the first six and a half is methodology.

You can now take Tuesday night off, everybody.

LOL Ruby. The only reason I knew it was/is liberal is because I move here (San Diego) from Phoenix. Tucson is a lot more forward thinking (and MUCH closer to the Mexico border) than the rest of the state. Don't get me wrong, Phoenix isn't too bad, but the rest of the state is still pretty hickish.

RobH said...

Leah,

I was going to post an October version for the contest before cutoff tonight, but I can't believe it; apissedant just beat me to it with my exact - I mean exact - values! I'd get to 375 by taking the common 353 that most sites now predict and adding in MO and IN. That's what I hope for - my heart, not my head.

My earlier pop vote estimate of 68M:58M was in fact based on a 54%:45% split of 126M total votes. I got a nine point spread based on the then current trackers plus a couple points for "no cell phones" in the surveys, less a tiny bit for "bradley" plus a sensible split for remaining undecideds (and 1% third party.)

Got to hand it to you apissed....

Anyway, I think turnout will be MUCH higher than I'd guessed, so here's my final guess:

EV: 0=364, M=174
Pop vote: O=51.5% M=46.5%
137M total votes 0=71M, McC=64M

Two caveats:

1) This requires the belief that more people will vote for McCain in '08 than voted for Bush in '04 - hard to fathom, I admit.

2) My gut tells me that before 11PM on Tues evening the nets will start reporting that the RNC and some state GOP's intend to file lawsuits contesting the results in specific states, and all these EV's will be on hold. Could include any of: FL, NC, VA, PA, OH, MI, WI, CO, NM, NV.

God I hope I'm wrong....

Karen Anne said...

RobH, I wouldn't put anything past the GOP, but does anyone know how this works legally? Can a lawsuit prevent electors from voting? (I know, I should remember from 2000, but all I remember is Repugs physically intimidating Florida vote counters.)

If the Supreme Court overturns the vote again, I believe there will be riots in the streets like none of us have ever seen. Or massive civil disobedience.

Aunt Jean said...

Looking at the top 100 papers, of the 34 that endorsed Bush in 2004, 10 went for Obama, 20 for McCain, and 4 couldn't decide or decided to get out of the endorsement business. Of the 54 that went for Kerry, 52 went for Obama, 1 hasn't endorsed yet, and 1 decided to get out of the endorsement business. (Obama is also leading among the no endorsements from 2004 by a margin of 4-3.

tmess2 said...

I would say couldn't file law suits before the count is certified, but we have seen law suits about the canvassing process before. However, until there is a certified count, you can't challenge the election itself.

I really don't see a case unless the election is very very close in a lot of states. It would cost credibility for the next 20 years to try to overturn large margins in a large number of states.

It really is a 50-state strategy. And, Arizona is in play.

Via email from the DNC:

On Monday, November 3rd DNC Chairman Howard Dean will spend the last full day of the 2008 presidential election helping to get out the vote for Democrats in John McCain's home state of Arizona. Dean will headline a Get Out the Vote Rally with local Democrats in Tucson, Arizona on the heels of Arizona being moved from "Leaning McCain" to "Toss Up" by Real Clear Politics.

Democrats are organized, motivated and ready to bring about the positive change our country needs. Recent polls in Arizona indicate that the election will be close and Gov. Dean is committed to Getting Out the Vote in support of Obama-Biden and Democrats up-and-down the ballot.

Thank you all for posting.

Beryl said...

Why am I so stressed? This is PERSONAL for me.

1. I need my job. My 401K has dropped by $31K this year and I'll need to work at least another year to recover from that. Although I'm in management and have been on the same job for almost 27 years, I can lose my job at any time. My company is committed to moving jobs out of the USA to our global delivery centers.

2. My niece and sister both have MS and can't get decent health care. Also my mother is aging and I expect health care to be an issue for her in the coming years. For me -- I can't afford McCain's plan. He will tax my employer's health benefits. Health care costs keep going up and up. I paid $3000 for gall bladder surgery this year and I have insurance! I'm concerned about costs as I get older.

3. Although, I won't see a tax break under either candidate, my neighbor's financial condition effects me. Most of my personal investment is in my homes (I have one rental). If my neighbors are financially stable, they can stay in their homes and the home values won't drop.

4. I've NEVER been for this lie-based war and I hate to see us pay 10 billion each month for our troops to get killed. Look at how much good we could do with 10 billion each month! We could have more jobs and ensure people stay in their homes.

Sorry for the rambling but I just finished listening to Obama's second speech in Ohio. I'm earnestly praying that he wins this thing.

tmess2 said...

Am used to getting stressed out in the last week before the campaign. One of the local state repres. candidates that I am helping -- both of her last two mailers were in the mailbox on Friday as were two from the state party supporting here. One of those things that make you want to scream at the company doing the printing since they were supposed to hit Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday -- not all at once. I am not going to tell how much money and effort that wasted.

Only 48 hours to go and we will know how all of our work has paid off.

My company was Outsourcing jobs, and with the Financial Crisis they will deliver pink slips to employees on Monday. I got mine Friday. Just hope with Obama's election, and the injection of the 700 Billion that the market corrects some more before I reach my severance period at the start of the year. Here comes the future!

Thank you thank you thank you DemConWatch and Oreo and all the fantastic posters and organizers on this open thread, thank you everybody for making this site so spectacularly good and informative and "emotionally honest" over the last ten crazy months.

As bad as things sound in the news about the economy I have never felt so optimistic about America's standing in the world. For the first time in a long time the world is ready to love the USA again.

I wonder how many people have stumbled on this thread and have used it as a barometer for what the party overall might be thinking. Who knows maybe David Axelrod has been dropping in every morning to take the pulse of the faithful. This has been one of my three or four favorite sites for staying up to date on the election.

Also before the election ends I'd like to give a special shout out to StopObamaNow for your hilarious satire. Your sendup of the intellectual backwaters of the Republican party was as spot on as Tina Fey's impression of Sarah Palin. You are too funny! You should get a job writing for the Onion or the Wonkette.

My wife is much like Aunt Jean. Was a HRC supporter who is now convinced that Obama is a much better choice then McCain. Over the last few months she listen to the message and is now a believer. We both casted our votes on the First day of early registration.

So I guess I could let her go with me.

I've heard on cnn today that McCain is hitting Obama on some comment he said about Coal Plants. But when I search the news (including fox) I am not seeing it hitting the news.

So I am not sure how this will play out.

Ya, still no release of Palin's medical records. I thought she gave the strangest comment when she said two weeks ago she would release them. "I’ve had five kids — that’s going to be in the medical records,”
Not the first thing I would think about, maybe it's nothing, but an odd thing to say.

McCain is on TV at a rally...

It makes my stomach turn when McCain says 'Joe the Biden'.

McCain has absolutely NO respect for people.

McCain does NOT set a good example for the younger generation.

Senator Obama and his campaign NEVER belittles McCain or Palin on a personal level.

I hope that ALL of America is fed up with the slimey tactics of the republicans and will vote all the republican bums out!

OBAMA/Biden '08

kujo,
You better take your wife LOL.
This is better than the Senior Prom.

McLame can't dampen the my great mood. Can't wait until tomorrow night. AJ

Kugo

sounds like you have a keeper for a wife there. Smart enough to vote for HRC but wise enough that she understands that Obama is just as good as a choise. AJ

OMG! My thoughts go out to the Obama family. It has just been reported that Obama's grandmother just passed.

You know she tried to hold on to see his victory for him and the American people.
Talk about having an Angel watching over you.
Best thoughts and wishes to the Obama family.

Last night Terrence Tolbert (44 years old), the Nevada state director of the Obama campaign died of a heart attack.

Earlier today there was an article that said that the republicans have filed a 'complaint' regarding Obama using the campaign plane and funds to go and see his grandmother in Hawaii.

And now we learn that Obama's grandmother has passed away from her battle of cancer. This is a very sad day for Senator Obama. Our prayers are with Senator Obama and his family.
