You would think the other SD would be Rep. Bart Gordon. I'm glad they are making a statement before the very, very end tonight. Even though I hope in 2012 they will have a reform on this system.

To be honest, the more ungracious she is the more she lowers her potential of being on the ticket.
She really needs to consider her approach at this moment and the impact it has on the voters.

Granted she ran a good campaign. However her mistake was putting bill in charge of setting it up. Her mistake was listening to all her advisors; they lead her in the wrong direction. That is abundantly clear. Too many mistakes, too much pandering, too much let me tell you what I think you want to hear, too much division, too much of that cutting you competition down and making them appear unelectable. You made too many mistakes Hillary that is exactly why you lost this race.

Now I think it is time for some serious talking to see if you can salvage your position with in the party and maybe find yourself on the ticket as the VP. Personally I hope not, but that is not my decision to make. But just remember all those things you said about Obama that were demeaning as to his character, ability to lead, his electability, his passing that commander in chief threshold. All those things could come back to bite you where the sun does not shine. Just remember what you sow so shall you reap.

The good thing about the Hillary website is that there is really not that many different people that post over there compared to the Obama site. A few weeks ago I was over there and some of the articles had less than 20 posts on them.

I think that the diehard supporters might pout and stay home on election day but most will remember that they are democrats and will vote for our Democratic nominee.

I saw Grey's post earlier regarding the entire Edwards list now in Obama's camp.

Has anyone seen specifically where the 10 delegates (7.5 votes) actually just came from?

Math tells me that it MUST be 5 FL 1/2's and 5 other fulls (it's the only way to get exactly 7.5) but I'd like to know where the 5 fulls came from (out of 5 IA, 1, NH, 1 SC)

Thanks.

Here's one way that Senator Obama could hold out the VP slot to Senator Clinton:

First a bit of background:

Senator Obama doesn't need to announce a VP candidate until the last day of the convention. In fact, that was the usual practice until just recently, and before that, the nominee let the convention pick the VP.

Now, what he needs to tell Senator Clinton is that he'll consider her on the list of VP candidates IF she makes a whole-hearted effort to campaign for him during the remainder of June, July, and August. She is required to explain how she will keep Bill on a short leash, and then keep him on that short leash. She would need to explain what will be done, and how it will be done, to keep Bill OUT of the spotlight after the nomination, in the general election campaign, and (presuming the GE victory) during the next four years.

ONLY if she gives satisfactory answers, and then follows through, with them, will she be considered.

We'd see how serious she is about a VP slot.

Of course, all the discussions would need to be very quiet, out of the public, so that neither side, especially Senator Obama, is embarrassed if she can't keep her promises (which I don't think she would make, and if she did, wouldn't be able to keep).

Mike

greywolf said...

Mike

Your kidding me, Hillary keep Bill on a short leash. What makes any one think she can achieve that now when she has not been able to do it all these past years?

Mike in Maryland said...

greywolf,

That's the idea.

Senator Obama would need her to tell him HOW she plans on doing it. Then when she can't, he can tell her if she can't keep her husband on a short leash, she can't keep a promise, and therefore she won't be consider.

I think that particular requirement is all that would be needed to make her not seek the VP slot. She already KNOWS she can't keep WJC on a short leash, or any leash for that matter.

Okay, I see, setting her up for failure. A good approach, yet I would just tell her no way from the get go. He can find someone that is much better and able to bring in the votes. Eva Peron is one of them..she is like McCain in that she was born overseas... but that could be fixed just as easily.

female, hispanic, some age to her, class act with carisma (sp).

I will tell you exactly what Clinton will say.

She will continue....

To fight for Health Care, Stopping the war ....

This has never been about her, its been about the policies of the future.

If she would of stopped campaining, then it would of shown a lack of commitment to these ideas.

She will continue to fight for these ideas, which are the foundation of the democratic party, with Obama in what ever capacity that is needed.

Thank You

Not really. It would be a way of making her realize that she can't be VP because of her inability to fulfill what he needs in a VP candidate.

As an attorney I can tell you this - NO attorney would ever turn down a Supreme Court Justice position if asked. I also beleieve that Clinto would actually be a good Supreme Court Justice - heck who knows with her on the court maybe we could get Scallia and others to retire early....

A few things.

1-What would people think? In order to have this as a "coming together" gesture, he would have to announce prior to the November election. Would the general population like the idea of Clinton on the SC?

2-Does she really have the right experience? To my knowledge, she has not practiced Constitutional law. Though it is true that we have occasionally appointed people without judicial experience, most of them had extensive constitutional experience.

Clinton and her husband to have a lot of foreign policy experience, so why not secretary of state? I think it is important to offer a position that she is actually qualified for. This way it doesn't look like an empty gesture. It is also important, that if any position is offered at all.... it isn't a demeaning position far below her. I do not know if she would judge Secretary of State as demeaning... and I am willing to bet she would judge a simple federal judge spot as demeaning.

Besides the Court hears issues that involve Federal questions of which Constitutional law is just one small (though more watched) part.

What Obama and Clinton would just have to say is that Obama had assured her that she was to have a prominent role in the future of America. She would work hard for him because anyone would die for that position.

I would think having a Supreme Court vote that preserves Roe v. Wade would be enticing to Hillary. Being a lawyer myself, I don't think that the lack of a constitutional law background is a serious detriment to serving as a Justice. That position requires good judgment and political skills (not that Hillary possesses those in large amounts); her clerks can do the spade work for her. She's no dummy -- she can learn what needs to learn on the job.

Auli Smedes said...

Apissedant, hi.

I just found this website yesterday and I started reading the posts on this thread this afternoon. I read one of your posts about freedom of speech in Europe. You're not saying people were surprised to find out there actually is freedom of speech over here, are you? We kind of have that for quite some time now :-) But even here in our country it sometimes goes wrong. Terribly wrong. Remember one of our politicians was murdered a couple years ago? That hadn't happened since 1584. A government leader getting assasinated I mean.

In The Netherlands we hardly understand the concept of being patriotic. Maybe we did at some point in history, but those times seem to be long gone. We do take a certain pride in being Dutch though. I think we just don't feel the need to express it that much. It's in our hearts, that's enough. Like, this flagpin debate? Something like that happening here would be unthinkable. The fact that someone would even bother to raise the issue or spend ink on it. That would be considered, well… kinda funny. We do love our country, we're just showing it differently.

You speak of being ashamed of your country's history? What history are you referring to? Give me anything and I raise you 'apartheid'. You do know that's a Dutch word, right? Or the situation in Northern Ireland? Do you realize the Dutch played a role in creating that? Battle of the Boyne mean anything to you? Did you know the Irish flag actually refers to Holland? For a third part. The orange part?
So no, not things we're particularly proud of, but what you gonna do about it? It happened. Don't let it happen again. Be better. Right? Oh and another fun fact. How many of you know that New York (NY) originally was a Dutch city? We were stupid enough to trade it for Surinam and 69 cents (give or take). Silly us.

I did catch that Pfleger-soundbite on CNN. So glad I'm not American so I'm free to laugh about it. I thought it was funny. Could have been mistaken for an episode of Saturday Night Live. I totally agree with you. Relating this to Mr. Obama or any other church member is splitting hairs. That's just looking for sticks and stones to hit someone with. I mean, someone actually went to this church every Sunday to report on what was going on there? Guess someone got a little too much time on their hands here.

But, back to the first issue, I'm happy to announce that this whole month of June, our whole nation will be extremely patriotic. For a month the whole country's colored royal orange. Our patriotism usually only shows during special events, like the European Soccer Championships that're due :-)

BTW: Emmen you say? Been to the local zoo yet? Did you visit Groningen already? Good choice, nothing above Groningen (quite literally I might add). Wonderful city, beautiful old university building. Did you know you're gonna be attending the second oldest university in our country? Founded in 1614. See, now I'm getting patriotic. Or cityotic. I was born in Groningen.

Oregon Dem said...

ProDem:

I agree.

Congrats to Senator Clinton for getting oh so close and blazing the trail for those that will follow in her footsteps in years to come.

tmess2 said...

As Oregon Dem noted, most of the cases decided by the Supreme Court are not constitutional law cases. All three of the decisions issued yesterday where about federal statutes. It's only a recent tradition to appoint only judges to the Supreme Court.

I still think the best thing that Obama can do is to, starting with Clinton, have a meeting with each of the former candidates (except for Gravel). Clinton will get a prime time speech, Edwards will get a prime time speech, the others will get a key staffer or two on the campaign team.

Depending on what the polls look like on July 4, Obama will decide if he needs to name a Clinton supporter to bring the party together or if the steps that he and Senator Clinton have taken have healed the wounds.

You will not see a VP named before mid-July.

My question is not whether or not she can do the job, or even do the job well. My question is on how it looks, and eventually on confirmation hearings. Yes, she is very smart, she is an accomplished attorney, and she would definitely be a welcome liberal voice on the bench.
What would the people, the voters, and the Senators think?

Douglas was appointed in an unmatched 3rd presidential term for FDR. The country was in love with FDR, and the Republicans were happy to at least have stopped packing the court. He was very good, although I would have to disagree on best ever. He was the exception that proves the rule(IMHO).

For those not from Louisiana, Jefferson Parrish is where all the whites moved out to the suburbs in the 50s and 60s to avoid having their kids attend desegregated schools.

Pat Buchanan is a numb-nuts.

Rob,

Did you see Countdown last night? Keith played a scene from the National Spelling Bee where the student thought the word to spell was 'numb-nuts' (it actually was numnah - the blanket between a saddle and a horse's back). His reaction was priceless. The eye brows arched, and the eyes got significantly larger.

Although when that word was given two years ago, the contestant reacted in even more dramatic manner - he actually totally fainted on stage.

I don't care if you still want to say that you are the one best able to win in November, but make it clear to both sides that this is about choosing the best person, not about any real major differences.

rkw said...

Guys,

Give Hillary and Barack a little room and a little time.

Politics about a lot of things. Among those are power, money, timing, compromise, negotiation, and thick skins.

Hillary won a lot of votes and a lot of delegates. That gives her power, but only for a short time. She is going to do what she can to leverage that power in negotiating with the new head of the party.

Hillary can't be president now, but she can be Senator from New York for a long time without the support of Barack Obama. However, Barack Obama probably can't be president without at least some level of support from Hillary.

Hillary knows that. Barack knows that. Hillary doesn't have enough leverage to dictate terms, but she can get something for her concession. She's not going to give that away. And that is politics.

It's all going to be fine. Barack says he wants to bring people together. Here's a chance to prove that. We will be better off, if Hillary and Bill and their supporters vote for, campaign for, and give to the Obama campaign for the fall.

Give it a day or a week. Hillary will get a promise and a chance for dignity. Barack will get to be the party's nominee.

She should get nothing for her concession. Those are PEOPLE, those are VOTES, those are THEIR dollars. SHE wants something for HER for all of her SUPPORTERS hard work and money. RIDICULOUS! The best thing for her supporters is a Democrat in the White House. GIVE THEM THAT. She cannot be given VP now. Not when she presents it like that. I know that is what she is pushing for, but it will look horrible. She had better odds before the speech. If she becomes the VP nominee now, our odds of winning in November will go down. If she doesn't shut up or go hide back in New York, our odds of winning in November go way down. She is killing our country for personal gain!! She is using OUR PAIN as LEVERAGE for her own PERSONAL GAIN!
I don't want that as my leader. I wish I lived in NY so I could work on her losing her Senate seat too.

In comparing McCaine to Clinton approach in attacking Obama, it reminds me of her January - February time where she tried to paint herself as someone of Change and paint Obama as something he was not.

This approached failed miserably.

You listen to Obama say what is change and look at McCain (Or Clinton) and see same old same old.

By November you will see McCain evolve like Clinton to the voters who will vote by race.

Big congrats to Senator Obama and his supporters. Win or lose in November, he has alot to be proud of.

My concern for Senator Obama is that as much as he speaks about 'bringing America together' and his always well-given talking points, his voting record just doesn't speak to that sort of bipartisianship.

Regardless of the Senator's oratory, it's his (to me) overly liberal voting record and agenda that is my main concern.

It's always great to hear someone speak about his 'vision' for the future of America. God knows, there's precious little of that kind of talk these days. But if he's just going to be a big-government, higher-taxes (couched as 'sacrifices') president, that won't do much to actually help the country.

Hopefully his talk isn't just talk and he really will actually be more of a bipartisian president should he win, but his past just doesn't support that belief unfortunately. We'll have to see I guess...
