lol Dave,
Have a drink for me and my wife! I installed a ceiling fan today, and I read about 8 pages in a book about the Supreme Court. I think that is going to be the extent of my activities for the day. I'm saving my partying for December.

That means you're required to have twice as much fun, and I'll just live vicariously through you... except for the shopping, watching figure skating, or other gay activities. I don't find those enjoyable, so leave those out. Unless you're shopping for ski equipment or home improvement stuff. Everything else report back and I'll pretend I partook.

ROFL - sounds goods p'd ant. We already have all of our home improvement equipment, yep we drills (no pun intended), saws (circular and saw zall - even a table saw), we are butch that way....we even still have our A/C equipment from the small A/C, Heating and Electrical side business we had in AZ before we moved out here - not much demand for us to use it out here though. We still do some work on the side for our friends every now and then, but very rare since we are seem to always be busy nowadays. We don't even tell most of our friends anymore, because we don't really enjoy it anymore...LOL

I'll tell you what, we were the "best dressed" A/C-Heating techs in AZ... :)

Dave,
lol, that is hilarious, and I'm totally jealous of your tool collection. I used to work as a field technician fixing computer operated touchless car washes for two years. I had one of those cool Little Giant ladders and everything. Now all I have is a cheap cordless drill, a 3/8" socket wrench, a 1/2" socket wrench, and a hammer. I don't even have drill bits for the drill. It is really quite sad, and quite a challenge to figure out how to fix electrical and plumbing issues with such a sad little tool collection. Once I'm gainfully employed, a proper tool shed will be one of my first investments. I refuse to pay repairmen because it is cheaper and more fun to figure out how to fix it myself.
If you have an extra 15 inch crescent wrench, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands. That was by far my favorite tool. So simple and powerful. :)

I read that Helms changed in one respect with the assistance of a rock star.
http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/undergod/2008/07/judgment_and_jesse_helms.html?hpid=topnews

"In 2002, just before he retired from the Senate, Helms agreed to meet with the rock star Bono, one of the world's leading advocates for fighting the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Helms, who had spent many years slashing foreign aid budgets, had rendered his judgment on AIDS loudly and clearly. In 1995, for example, he told The New York Times that the government should spend less money on people with AIDS because they got sick as a result of "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

But after talking to Bono, Helms apologized and said he was ashamed. "I have been too lax too long in doing something really significant about AIDS," Helms said.

What did Bono tell him?

"Christ only speaks about judgment once and it's not about sex but about how we deal with the poor, and I quoted Matthew, 'I was naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and you fed me.' Jesse got very emotional, and the next day he brought in the reporters and publicly repented about Aids. I explained to him that AIDS was like the leprosy of the New Testament."

If a rock star can have that sort of impact on Jesse Helms, there's no telling what Jesus can do."

I hope he repented on other things also.

Ok, so everyone has left, we have cleaned up the house, the beau is packing his bags (I packed mine yesterday) and then we are headed down to the beach and after the fireworks (p'd ant, get your mind out of the gutter) and then off to Palm Springs - Oh I can't wait to get there. I need a drink dammit! LOL

With that said, beryl, referring to the Helms article, UGH!!!!!!

This is one thing that really really really chaps my ass about religion, especially "Christianity". According to everybody who partakes in these religions seem to believe that no matter what kind of life you have lived, as long as you "repent" you are "saved". I say that is total BULL! How anyone can say that ok, I have taught others to hate and discriminate my entire lifetime as long as I say I'm sorry and accept "Hey Zeus" as my "savior", I will go to heaven but for those who don't will be subjected to living eternity in a lake of fire.

UGH!!!!!! That man, Jesse Helms, was/is EVIL to the core, and there is not one thing he could EVER do to redeem himself as far as I'm concerned.

Hello There:

Happy Independence Day to you all.

Breaking News..............

Obama's another flip-flop:

He says Women CANNOT abort because of their mental illness, (although they must be allowed for physical illness)! There is distinction, he says!!

This is not his earlier position:

As the Democratic Party platform states women have the right to abortion, period. They are fighting the ban on late term abortion tooth and nail.

Now, BHO is throwing a monkey wrench into the mix to pander to the religious Right!

Is he NOT playing with fire?

Stay tuned.

Dave,
lol to most of your post, and I agree for the most part to the other half of your post. That was for the most part my interpretation... for 80 years, he spread hate and bigotry, and made the world a worse place. Then, with six short years left, he repents and says he was wrong. Did he do anything to fix his mistakes? Did he go on huge speaking tours to spread this new message of acceptance and kindness? Nope, none of that, just said a few words, asked God for forgiveness, and washed his hands of it.

I would not go to the extent of saying that sins are unforgivable. Senator Byrd has more than made up for his early years in the Klan. How much good has he done for our country in his 56 years of public service?

I look at it as math and statistics. Net positive, or net negative. I judge Byrd a net negative, and Helms as a net negative. For this reason, Byrd's death would be sad, and Helms death means nothing.

I still like the article, because it is still nice to see the evil switch over. It is too late to gain my forgiveness, and had too few actions to back up a the words... but I'm not the final judge.

"Outside groups have spent nearly $10 million to aid Obama in this election, according to data compiled by the non-partisan CQMoneyLine, which tracks campaign money. Independent groups have spent less than $50,000 on McCain's behalf."

Let's examine this real quick. Most of that 527 money was used DURING THE PRIMARY. McCain's primary was already over, so his real campaign just started, so the numbers aren't comparable.
Second, what about the 50 million dollar pledge from the NRA? Does that not count? When did SBVT start spending money? SBVT was not formed until May 4th, two months after Kerry locked up the nomination. They didn't start spending the money on tv advertisements until August. To just blatantly say that 527s are not a factor and shouldn't have been in Obama's decision is ludicrous. Within a week of his decision, the NRA came out offering nearly as much money to unseat him as he would be allowed to spend had he chosen public financing. There will undoubtedly be more.

Dave,

I don't believe Helms was a good person, IMO. However, I don't know his heart and only some of his deeds. Similarly, I think Mother Theresa was a good person but I don't know her heart and only some of her deeds. Fortunately, God knows the HEART and ALL of the deeds. God's judgment matters.

It doesn't matter to Helms if YOU or I forgive him. However, I forgive Helms for harm that he has indirectly done to me. Also, I'm quite sure I've done harm to others and I want to be forgiven.

That said, I still think of Moms Mabley's quip that goes something like this:

"Always speak good of the dead. He's dead. Good."

Mike in Maryland said...

During Helms last years in the Senate, he got around on a motorized scooter-chair. When he first got it, he would constantly be bumping into people, using the excuse that he hadn't learned all the controls. When it kept up for weeks and then months, others figured out that he was intentionally bumping into people, especially when almost the only recipients of the 'bumps' were Helms political opponents.

He also learned the controls so well that he would spin the chair in such a way that people had to jump to keep from getting their feet run over by the chair's wheels, especially the rear wheels where most of the weight was carried.

Helms later admitted that he thought his actions to be 'great fun'. The recipients didn't, especially when you consider that those motorized chairs can weigh more than 100 pounds, without the occupant.

jean,
Thanks for the thought, but the wife is in the Netherlands. I'm moving there in December to be with her. The US doesn't recognize her education, so she can only get entry level jobs here. She moved back to get her old job and insurance back, because we can't afford to have the child here. I'm applying for a scholarship that will pay me to go to graduate school over there, otherwise I can't immigrate.

Immigration is the worse process ever, I suggest never doing it. We already paid fees and jumped through hoops for her to move here, but the unplanned pregnancy made us rethink in which nation we should live. We feel that the Netherlands is a better place to raise a child at the moment. Mostly for financial reasons, but there are several other reasons as well. She doesn't make enough to immigrate me there through marriage, and their work visas are almost impossible to get. A student visa is much easier, and as I said, the scholarship actually pays me a salary to earn my masters.

So unfortunately we're apart for the next six months, which is why I don't do anything anymore.

Beryl said...

apis,
Congrats on such a good scholarship and I wish you well in your immigration pursuit. I am only familiar with work visas to enable some key skills to work here. My company spends a lot on the lawyers and it still isn't easy for anyone involved.

You and your wife paid for all US costs yourselves? How does it compare with costs in the Netherlands? What happens after you finish your Masters? Do they make special provisions for those who've obtained degrees there?

jean said...

Ap,

Sounds like a logical and very good choice, but six months sucks.

I am not up on the stats with the son's games.
I do the chauffer thing and crap for the kids, gotta love them, but I just found out the son's first game in Allstars is against the #1 team.
Boy is this gonna be fun this afternoon.
I was worried about letting my son go to Hooters after the game if they won.
I'm not so worried right now:)
I now have to do the feed thing.
He's nervous and "not hungary",
I must now go beat him;) with some food.

beryl,

apissedant said...

beryl,
The costs in the US just tripled. Now, to immigrate a spouse, it costs almost 3000. It cost us a little over 1000 so far, we got caught in the middle of the price hike. There are several different forms, so we got the new price of some of the latter ones, and the old price on some of the older ones. We still have one fee and one form left, for change of status.

As far as the Netherlands, the costs in that direction I think are slightly lower. It is also faster. They just have more requirements. Our requirements are 15k a year, or 75k in assets. I had no income, so she immigrated on our assets. Their immigration requires about 50k a year in income, and as far as we know, there is no asset thing to negate the income requirement.
Their work visa requires that the job has gone advertised and unfilled for six months, and then there is still tons of paperwork and fees.

Student visas are crazy easy. After I get my masters, we may come back here, or I may apply to get my doctorate there. The pay for doctorate school over there starts at about 37k a year, so that is definitely livable. (They pay you because for the doctorate program you do a whole bunch of research, which makes them money.)

As far as immigrating after school to work, I have no idea. We could immigrate on the marriage one, and then I could work by that point. This year she won't make the income threshold because she's taking three months off for pregnancy. It is paid leave, but it is only 70% of her base pay, which is about half of her pay.

We'll work it out. :)

CNN has an article out in which they seem to be misrepresenting the results of a poll about what Clinton supporters will do.

The CNN article is at:

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/04/clinton-supporters-still-not-embracing-obama-poll-says/

The CNN article claims 54% of Clinton supporters would vote for Obama. But, if you look at the poll questions, that isn't what the poll asked people at all.

The poll combined results to questions 9 and 10, so it is impossible to tell exactly what the results were, but it looks like they were saying if the primary battle were still on, who would prefer Clinton or Obama to be the nominee.

It doesn't seem to ask what their plans are in November. Or am I missing something here?

Obama mulling major speech in front of Berlin's Brandenburg gate; to evoke, Reagan, Kennedy. "Ich bin ein Obama"

WASHINGTON--A German friend passed along the news Saturday that local sources in Berlin are confirming that the Obama campaign was in contact with city authorities to discuss the possibility of presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) delivering an outdoor address in front of the Brandenburg gate. The thinking is Obama would follow in the footsteps of two very famous Cold War-era speeches of U.S. presidents speaking in Germany: JFK "Ich bin ein Berliner" and Reagan "tear down this wall." It would probably be Obama's only public speech during upcoming visits to Germany, France and England on a swing to include stops in Israel and Jordan. There is still no date for the trip. German news sources are reporting the Obama team is working on a visit during the "second half of this month".
,
Spiegel Online International reports that an Obama visit to Berlin his month "looks likely" with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
---

Spiegel Online Excerpt.....

Germany's ambassador to Washington, Klaus Scharioth, has reportedly worked for weeks to convince Obama's campaign that the candidate's only large European appearance should take place in Berlin. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier talked to Obama by phone last April and learned that he might visit Germany. In the meantime, according to SPIEGEL sources, Steinmeier's staff has set plans in motion for an Obama appearance in the capital by the end of July.

Both Steinmeier and his boss, Chancellor Angela Merkel, have expressed willingness to meet Obama. A member of Obama's campaign has already met with Berlin's mayor, Klaus Wowereit, and the Secret Service has reportedly started to investigate security questions surrounding a visit.

No location has been announced, but the Berlin Senate has reportedly been asked whether Obama can speak in front of the Brandenburg Gate, where former US President Ronald Reagan gave a famous speech in 1987. Reagan made a show of asking then-Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down" the Berlin Wall.

AP,

Another thing McSame has proposed is that a $300 million prize to go to the inventor of an improved battery.

I've got several problems with that:

1. How much improvement means it is an 'improved battery'? Unless he's hidden the details somewhere, I haven't heard what the definition is.

2. Will the technology be in the public domain, or will a company or individual be able to patent, and thus control, who gets access to the 'improved battery'?

3. McSame didn't restrict the winner to being a US registered corporation or person(s), nor did he put any restrictions on where the new battery was to be produced. Thus it could be $300 million going to a group or nation with ties to terrorist extremists, or to some other nation like China, Russia, Iran or some other country where we have diplomatic or other concerns. And if it can be produced out of the US, there go a lot of potential American jobs.

4. McSame claims that the $300 million will come out of 'waste, fraud and abuse' that he will veto out of any bills coming his way. Why not take it out of the subsidies going to the oil companies? Would be simpler to do it that way, and handle any 'waste, fraud and abuse' in a different manner.

I have other concerns, but those are at the top of the list right now.

Mike

Beryl said...

McSame's supporters gave him an idea and he is milking it. He will not provide specifics so that the idea can't be picked apart.

We all know who is padding his pockets. The same folks who padded Shrub's -- big oil. Therefore, none of his ideas will reduce their profits.

Mike,
Yes, I immediately ignored him when he said that, because it was just another one of those Republican retard moves I've learned to tune out.

I am also beyond tired of politicians, typically Republicans, saying that they will fund programs, "through eliminating waste that comes there way."

It is the ultimate non-answer and non-fund. They have no idea how they will pay for it, so they just say they'll eliminate all waste in Washington. Has anyone ever worked for a company with more than 20 people in it that didn't have waste? It would cost more to police all the waste than it would to allow some waste to trickle through.

If the government is paying for something, you can guarantee it will not become public domain. If the 300 million dollar prize means the government is buying the rights, then the government will proceed to give the patent to someone else. We have more than enough advances created or funded with government money that are now making a mint for various corporations. REVERSE ROBIN HOOD! WOOHOOO!

SS,

So the DOE's total R&D earmarks for 2007 were "only" $240 mil. How could another $300 mil. not help?

Yes, $300 million would help. But it will be given in one lump sum to the developer of an 'improved battery', but the definition of 'improved' is not given. As a result, you can't count McSame's $300 million prize as adding to DOE's R&D budget.

Further, McSame does not know how he'd fund it. He advocates funding it by 'eliminating waste, fraud and abuse' but at the same time supports bills that prohibit government agencies from beefing up the Inspector General offices - the offices in each agency that are charged with finding and exposing waste, fraud and abuse.

Then there's the fact that very few of the inventions, patents, etc., that the government has helped create (think drugs, computing, the Internet, space) has NOT been given to the public, but to private industries, who then patent it with little to no compensation to the government (aka the public).

They just have to make sure they're the first one with the best battery.

Who is the 'they' in that statement?

The tariffs could remove some of Venezuela's influence on Brazil.

What tariffs? The oil industry is getting tax deductions, not protection by tariffs.

We need to find somewhere else to grow sugarcane for ethanol besides the Everglades.

Brazil is using sugarcane for ethanol, but not the US. Ethanol produced in the US is almost entirely from corn. Also, about 50% of sugar production (in the form of granulated sugar) is from sugar beets, 50% from cane. Most commercial sweeteners for packaged foods comes from corn sweetener, not sugar.

I do like brown sugar too though.

Not to worry - brown sugar is white granulated sugar that has had molasses added. Molasses can come from sugar cane, also from sugar beets and sorghum.

Mike

apissedant said...

soft,
LOL, I have my own ideas on ethanol from what research I've done. I've done a few papers on biofuels and MTBE (fuel additive used before ethanol), and the research group across the hall from my office are making biofuel out of algae.

The biofuels and ethanol ideas are in no way a replacement. We cannot produce 21 MILLION BARRELS A DAY of these reusable fuels. It may be used as a nice little side project, but it is no replacement.

Ethanol vs. MTBE is a different argument. MTBE is methyl tertbutyl ether. It was used to boost octane ratings and increase oxygen concentration to help with clean combustion. Unfortunately it was found to be highly toxic, and often leaked into the water supply and the soil. We have since switched to 10% ethanol, which is obviously not highly toxic. It also increases octane level, and produces even cleaner combustion than MTBE. The question lies in where to get the ethanol from. Corn produces very little ethanol, is environmentally bad to grow, and creating the ethanol is quite difficult.

Brazil can produce more, cheaper, and with a much smaller environmental footprint. Energy independence at the cost of the environment and our food supply is not an option.

Sorry for the long boring statement, but I feel the need to defend and complain about ethanol at the same time. It has become an essential part of our energy supply, but increasing it by using E85, or requiring that the production be domestic is stupid.

apissedant said...

Oh, another thing, commodity prices are not tied to supply and demand. I am tired of reporters and futures traders saying it isn't there fault and it is all supply and demand.

Commodity prices are inelastic in the short term. No matter how much they decide to charge us, we will still buy them, because we have to. The only changes will occur on the supply side, and that won't take effect for at least a year for food, and closer to five or ten years for minerals and fossil fuels.
I want our leaders to go back and retake freshman economics.

Then you can turn all the toss up states and red states to blue states again, and have them count twice for Obama. "My husband and I are about the same age as McCain, and I don't think we'd be in a position to take this country in the direction it needs to go," said Rosemary Bates, 65, of Barre, Vt., an Obama supporter. "We've grown up in a different era. Something is not working and it needs to be changed."

From NBC's Mark Murray

Virginia Sen. Jim Webb just issued a statement from his Senate office saying that -- "[u]nder no circumstances" -- does he want to be considered as Obama's veep. "Last week I communicated to Sen. Obama and his presidential campaign my firm intention to remain in the United States Senate, where I believe I am best equipped to serve the people of Virginia and this country. Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for vice president.

But Webb also said he would campaign hard to help Obama win the battleground of Virginia in the general election. "He is a man who speaks eloquently about our national goals and calls for the practical solutions that must be put into place to obtain them," he said. "I will proudly campaign for him."

Hello There:

BHO seems to be moving slowly and steadily towards the Center. Good for him and the country.

His stand on Gay Marriage issue in CA in confusing:

He is against the "Marriage" but for "Civil Union".
However, he is against the CA Marriage Protection Act Ballot Initiative in Nov 2008.

This will really confuse people of his real intent. He wants the cake and eat it too!!!!!1???????

Gallup has an interesting article today (7-7-08):

"July Leader Lost in 6 of the 9 Competitive US Elections"

Will 2008 would be one of them?

Although Gallup has BHO leading by 4%, AOL Straw Poll is still 63% to McCain and 37% to BHO.

Sample n is the real issue. Gallup and other Company polls have very small n = about 3000. AOL Straw Poll has 370K. This is a huge difference.

What Gallup says on their poll:

"In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulty of conducting survey can introduce error or bias into findings of public opinion polls".

Besides, on matters of race and sex, the voters are very ambiguous. They SAY one thing and DO something else. Watch out. Therefore, take gallup and other Company polls with a grain salt. Believe AOL Straw more than others, because it is done voluntarily by the VOTERS in a confidential manner (give some allowance of 3-5% for malicious mischief).

Is BHO a true Centrist? Maybe....

He may do anything to win. Maybe...

Stay tuned.

m in md-Hello. I didn't save the reports I was reading, but here's just a couple of clarifications since it's hard to tell I threw in a little sarcasm about the contest and so forth. "They" is the DOE. The tariff is on the sugarcane based ethanol produced by Brazil. I had always heard that brown sugar was unbleached sugar.

That's good news and bad news.

The good news is that Libertarians traditionally have voted for the Repig candidate.

The bad news is that this is less support for Barr, especially in Georgia.

How low can John McCain sink? How far can he get into promoting trickle down economics before his head explodes or God strikes him dead?
We have tried trickle down economics twice, and twice now it has failed miserably. We are currently in the middle of the latest failure, and it has left an unarguably worse economy than it was put in place to fix.
How can anyone, with a straight face and without a spark of insanity in their eyes, propose reducing taxes on the wealthy and the corporations to "promote investment in the American economy?"

I'm going to make it an early evening - REALLY TIRED! But I'll be on for a little while longer p'd ant. I have to do some catch up because I watched nearly zero tv this weekend, didn't pay attention to politics, and believe it or not didn't discuss politics all weekend. Me, of all people. Ya I know! If I wasn't out sittin' by the pool, going bar hoppin' etc.,

By the way, wtf is up with the NRA? They are suing Disney because a PRIVATE CORPORATION bans employees from bringing guns to work. Hmmmmm, if Mickey is going to packin' I don't want to go there (well I wouldn't go anyway, but you get the point). I mean, really, just think about it. Some short dude (I'm talking about his HEIGHT - p'd ant get your mind out of the gutter again), wearing some mouse suit that is hotter than hell to wear, tripping over those big ass shoes all day, dealing with screaming kids all day, the man has GOT to be one pissed off MOFO. Would any family really feel comfortable going to Disney if Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald were all packin'? Would you? I wouldn't trust their mental stability. I know I would be insane after one day.

stopOBAMAnow said...

For BHO to be a real Centrist, he must sincerely say the following:

1. During a recession or economic downturn, there will be NO tax hike on anybody, period.

There will be tax holidays to contain the increase in gasoline price. Short term and long term plans for Energy Security will be discussed.

2. Deficit financing will be resorted to prime the economic pump: massive investments on schools, roads and bridges.

3. Govt will cut down waste, and focus on developing brand new technologies.

4. Budget will be balanced in 3-4 years. The size of the Govt will be the same as left by Bill Clinton with adjustments for population growth. Efficiency will be the name of the game.

5. Affirmative action programs will be slowly cut down - meritocracy will be the norm; need based financial assistance will be given to ALL students.

If BHO insists on Class Warfare he will lose miserably. Most Americans don't appreciate tearing down the "rich" in order to feed the poor! They want to be rich themselves from all the opportunities that the Govt creates for them.

McCain is saying ALL the right things, so far.

BHO, wake up, and move to the Center, to get elected.

Junk the FAR LEFT "Tax and Spend, Big Govt Ideology", in order to get the votes of most of Americans.

Stay tuned.

I missed MSNBC again. Long weekend made me forget all about it. I flipped around the regular channels and couldn't find anything. I hate that you guys always remind me to watch MSNBC AFTER all the shows.

Hadn't heard the Disney thing, but it doesn't surprise me. They smell blood in the water and they're going for the kill. They are proving that they are not for reasonable regulations as they always say. They are not in fear that liberals are trying to take all their guns, they're just trying to boost the profits of gun companies.

Here's my statement on Jesse Helms and the NRA. Charlton Heston said "from my cold dead hands," and now he is dead. This, to me, means that Charlton Heston is now supporting reasonable and intelligent gun regulations. So let's get on it. I guarantee Jesse Helms at least once said, "a black man will run this country over my dead body." Well he is dead too, so now it is time for Barack. Seems like two of the craziest conservatives are now backing the liberal platform, so how could we lose now?

LOL AJ. We had a great time. I'm actually got pretty burnt. But hey it's a "base" coat right? I've already started peeling if that tells you anything...LOL

Very relaxing. Drinks by the pool, pool volleyball, lots of eye-candy (we stayed at a gay resort). We blew LOTS of money though. But it was just what I needed going into finals week (yes I should've been studying, but I didn't - didn't even take my books with me.)

I think I got on the computer once the entire time we were gone and that was to look up an address. I was really good that way.

How was your weekend? Did you meet up with the beau?

As for politics this weekend, I didn't see anything news worthy. The election cycle seems rather lame. Obama is campaigning to the middle, and McCain is slowly becoming Bush. He now cannot pronounce simple phrases like, "Lexington Project," and says, "well let's call it the Lexington Project," which is a rather stupid statement considered it is NAMED the Lexington Project. I guess we could call it, "Steaming Pile of Dog Crap," but that would go against his new "Doubletalk Express" policy.

She ends her posing of the topic with "Isn’t declaring total ignorance about computers the equivalent of a presidential candidate’s saying in 1908 that he couldn’t read? Shouldn’t basic scientific and technological literacy be a requirement for a president today?"

Interesting responses.

Now that we are almost in the GE phase, I'm REALLY disliking McCain. The more he talks the more I want to heave. This man cannot be elected POTUS.

How can middle income Americans (especially those eligible for the stimulus tax rebate) support him?

Have we (Americans) really become that stupid?

jean said...

Hey Beryl,
The husband and I were watching McCain last night.
He did look like an idiot.
How that clip was let on the news with all his new staff I do not know.
The problem that I think needs to be addressed is THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE CHANGE.
There are many reasons but what comes into play is the fear factor.
Obama needs to coddle these people and it needs to be recognized that there are ALOT of these people.
I feel this is scary but true.
McCain is playing on this fear.
I think the Obama's hammer is going to drop soon.
He is just putting all his "Ducks in a row"
It is kinda fun to watch McCain keep digging his hole deeper and deeper.

I don't think that it's so much that people don't like change more so since the sorry state that everything is in. It's just that people are afraid that it might get worst. Afraid of the unknown so to speak.I know that you might not understand that. The way that you feel about Obama but lets face it there is so much that we don't know about Obama. The media has been good to Obama. No not perfect but there is so much that hasn't been brought out. I'm not saying that Obama is a bad man I've been listening to him a lot. I try my best to listen with an open mind but I do have to admit sometimes it's hard. I will admit this I think more of him than I did a month ago. All I can do is pray no matter what happens and who ever gets the job of POTUS that he will take in consideration the hard times that people have gone thru in the last few years. Jean

jean said...

Aunt Jean,
No kidding.
That is why I think people are afraid.
I am in banking and things are bad.
The worst part is the next 6 months will be worse.
Obama is very close to HRC in a lot of things.
You know.
If things go to McCain we are really in trouble.
The problem I see is the original Obama supporters not willing to listen to the new supporters.
Obama has a 50 state plan.
He needs the support so that legislation can be passed so that things can really get done.
Obama knows this and I do respect him for this. That is also his job.

Hearing that we don't need you sounds like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Beryl said...

Jean,
One of my favorite time-wasters is a computer-based game called "Billionaire". It is a like Monopoly with investments options. The object of the game is to wipe out your opponent or make billions. The latter is preferable when you have lots of time to waste.

Like most computer games, you learn the tricks to ensure a win:

1. You amass wealth though stocks, bonds, and real estate rentals. You go in and out of debt to assist in this strategy but you must quickly reach and maintain a positive net worth.

2. Your opponent must go into and stay in debt but he must also retain enough assets so you can continue to amass wealth.

The more I play Billionaire, the more I understand what is happening to us. Acquiring wealth and power is addicting and there is no such thing as "enough" if you don't care about who gets hurt. As a result, the gulf between rich and poor widens. The wealthy ensures that the masses survive - barely - so that the game doesn't end.

I'm fine with capitalism but not the way the game is currently being played. I do care about people. Lives are being sacrificed in wars for purely economic reasons. People are losing jobs and homes only so that companies can gain more market share but the financial rewards are limited to company executives. Creativity is being stifled to maintain status quo.

We need a change. Frankly, I am sick of government. However, today our government supports this sick game. Policies are in place to favor corporations and hurt individuals.

In philosophy, it is obvious that I am a Libertarian. I am a Democrat on paper because Ron Paul could not win. Right now, the only viable option is to select someone as POTUS who is not 100% controlled by corporations – Obama.

Aunt Jean said...

Jean I do know that the things that he wants to do is very close to HRC. In that respect I like him. Don't get me wrong when it comes to being a democrat I know that is what I am at heart. I have found thtu the years it's the democrats that comes closer to caring for the little guys. The rep. is all about the greed about the big wigs and forget about the little guy. I know that there are a lot of people on here that doesn't want HRC as VP but it would make me feel better if she was. But I don't think she would take the job. Jean

jean said...

beryl,
I know that type of game and while I am in it I have been very fortunate to be given a playing card that allows me to be human and still sleep a night from my actions. The owner of the company gives me alot of room.
I have turned down more business than make.
My company is also now alive for that business from 0 buy backs.
At lease from me. After 10 years that is not bad.
You said that Obama was not controlled 100% by corps, which i think is true, but he is still going to have to play the game.
Things are going to get real bad in 6 months, that will reflect on Bush which will reflect on McCain.
Good for Obama.
He needs alot of support so people scream at their representatives so that legislation passes. He needs support from everyone.

I'm "in the game" also. We've moved over 100K jobs to our global delivery centers (off-shore) resulting in domestic job loss. Although I have participated in this practice, I sleep well when I offer rejected alternatives (e.g. send the jobs to Mississippi or other states where the pay scales are lower).

There are no simple solutions but the culture of greed must gave way to a culture of fairness and responsibility.

McCain has morphed into McBush making him Corporatist who only sees the working class as pawns. We cannot afford another 4 years of that mindset.

Hey Jean, I just got done donating what I could back in the October wildfires a few months back, but I could probably find a few things that I don't wear anymore.

I'm sure that San Diego will have a few, but I don't think it will be close to that of Oct 2007 or 2003, just because a lot of that hasn't grown back yet.

I haven't heard of any donation centers set up at this point, but as soon as I do, I'll be going down with a few clothes (as mentioned before, I cleaned out in Oct.) but I'll also be going down to get a few cases of water to donate also :)

You stay safe up there. I'm ok here where I'm at, but it really kills the air quality :(

Jean, I know that you are only 40 miles north, but your area is much more likely to get hit by the wildfires than mine. You are in a more "rural" or open area than I am. I'm in the heart of the city, away from ALL the brush etc.I mean the closest it would get to me is Mission Hills and that is still 2-3 miles away. And since the 2 major hospitals are between me and Mission Valley, it is highly unlikely that they would allow it them to get this far :)

As far as donation centers, have you tried calling the American Red Cross?

One thing to remember about those list of candidates is that "running" nationally does not mean anything. Technically, this is 51 separate elections and not all candidates are running in all 51 elections.

For example, in my state (Missouri), only three parties did well enough in the last election to be considered "established" political parties -- the Democrats, the Republicans, and the Libertarians. The three established parties automatically have spots on the general election ballot. All other parties are considered "new" parties and must file petitions to get on the ballot (with the same rule applying for independents). As of today, only one "new" party has been certified as getting enough signatures (the Constitution Party). Any other party/candidate has three weeks left to get their petitions filed or they have to run as a write-in.

I for one will be quite happy seeing McCain having to share space on the General Election ballot with the Libertarians and Constitution Parties. If the ballot stays as is, that is going to be a significant advantage for Obama.

Leah Texas4Obama said...

tmess2-

Here is a website http://presidentelect.org/e2008.html

that hasn't been updated since June but lists how many states some of the candidates have ballot access.

I am sure there must be a more updated list someplace but I am too lazy to go look for it right now ;)

One thing to remember about those list of candidates is that "running" nationally does not mean anything. Technically, this is 51 separate elections and not all candidates are running in all 51 elections.

An example of what tmess stated is Barr as the Libertarian candidate. The Libertarian Party (according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_candidates_in_the_United_States_presidential_election%2C_2008), is on the ballot in more states than the other 'third parties', yet it is on only 31 ballots as of right now. The Green Party is next at 22, and the Constitution Party at 21. The other parties are on fewer states' ballots.

These won't be the final numbers, as there is still time in some states for a candidate and/or party to gain access. And there are suits in some states for having 'excessive' requirements for signatures to gain ballot access. Oklahoma is one such state, which requires a political party to gather 48,524 signatures for ballot access. Contrast that with Ohio, with more than 3 times the population, which has a requirement for 20,114 signatures.

This is an excerpt from an AP article about the Fed tightening lending laws. The laws would prevent penalizing borrowers that pay off loans early, require that borrowers provide proof of ability to make loan payments before a loan is issued, and basically, require the banks to set up an ESCROW or something similar to pay taxes and insurance.

Consumer groups have complained that the proposed rules aren't strong enough, while mortgage lenders worry that they are too tough and could crimp customers' choices.

The Mortgage Bankers Association urged the Fed to "take a balanced approach in devising final regulations so that the credit crisis is not worsened."

Meanwhile, the Center for Responsible Lending, a group that promotes homeownership and works to curb predatory lending, warned the Fed that weak regulation and oversight has led to the "worst credit crunch in generations."

How amusing and disingenuous is that? Consumers, through all consumer advocates are crying for more regulation. They want protection from themselves, the banks, and other borrowers rocking the credit market through no fault of their own. The banks are saying that they want to prevent further regulation to help consumers, regardless of what consumers actually want. Their idea is to not tighten regulations, that way we can attempt to borrow ourselves out of the crisis.

That worked so well in 2003, both for consumers and banks. It is obvious we should repeat this process of floating payments between lenders and growing further and further in debt to fix our current economic problem of too much debt and too little income. WHAT!?!?!?!?

Well, I guess I could try to come up with an argument that would somehow help their theory make sense. I guess it is possible I will die in the next five years. It took five years for the last credit meltdown to finally catchup, so it is possible I will die before the next economic disaster strikes. In this case, I will never have to pay back all this borrowed money, and I will get all the benefits of the silly policy without ever having to pay the consequences. Using this model, unless the second coming occurs, I guess I screw everyone else that doesn't die in the next five years, but apparently that isn't my problem. Good luck! Maybe in five years they can loosen requirements even further and allow those still living to borrow themselves out of the next crisis too.

From Fox regarding McCain..

.... Additionally, the candidate who received much grief last year for singing “bomb, bomb Iran” to the tune of the Beach Boys’ ‘Barbara Ann’ at a campaign event, made another joke regarding Iran that could also potentially be seen as offensive.

Informed of a report that U.S. exports to Iran have “increased ten-fold” during the Bush administration, with the biggest export being cigarettes, McCain interrupted the reporter before he could finish:

“Maybe that’s a way of killing them,” he said, before quickly adding, “I meant that as a joke–as a person who hasn’t had a cigarette in…29 years.”....
_______

Grrr... I hate it when ex-smokers and non-smokers are offensive to smokers (even if it is to people in other countries!). Cigarettes are NOT illegal!

McCain is an A$$!
McCain smoked over 2 packs a day for over 25 years!

Guess he could send over some of his wife's Budweiser to Iran and then the Iranians could become alcoholics and die of liver disease or from car accidents... THAT makes as much sense as he cigarette comment!

I betcha his cigarette comment isn't going to go over very well with all the smokers in small town America that hang out in the bars and VFW's.

AP,

When I got a mortgage in 1995, I paid a bit higher interest rate to make sure the mortgage could be paid off early if I so desired. I was offered an option to get a lower rate, but without the early payment option, and another option to 'buy down' the interest rate, but I would have had to pay two points (2% of the total mortgage) up front to lower the rate by 1/4%. I turned down both options.

As it happened, most months I was able to make double payments (and sometimes more) throughout the mortgage and paid it off early. I didn't maximize the amount of the mortgage I was told I could afford with my income, but kept it within my own estimate of what I wanted to afford, not trying to 'keep up with the Joneses'. Thus the house I bought was priced much less than the bank said I could afford. Even so, I felt it was an excellent buy, as it met my then-current needs and all expected future needs. Right now, even in a depressed real estate market, if I wanted to do so (which I don't), I could sell the house for more than 3 times what I paid for it.

I was also required to have an escrow account for insurance and taxes, which the bank reviewed and adjusted every six months, to make sure there was enough in the account to make the necessary payments and adjustments to payments into the account were made in a timely manner to maintain the account in a positive balance.

I have no problem in the proposed law's requirements for ability to pay, escrow accounts, and ability to pay off the loan early. By paying off the loan early, I saved several tens of thousands of dollars by not having to pay interest until the projected end of the loan.

Of course, I live in Maryland, a state that the Repigs claim has 'too many regulations' that a business can't make a profit in the state. The state does have a lot of regulations, but they are much more consumer-oriented so the businesses have a much more difficult time ripping off the consumers.

BTW - If a person has a 30 year conventional loan, and can make just one extra payment (equal to the regular monthly mortgage payment) in the first six months of a mortgage, it will shave six to 12 months off the loan payments.

Hello There:

Since Mar 7, 2008 the national polls are very much a tie between McCain and Obama: 44-46% as per Gallup (n = about 3000; bug AOL Straw Polls consistently favors McCain by 60% to 40% with an n = about 300K)

This is when the Reid/Pelosi's Congress is about 18%, Dubya Bush is about 28%.

This proves that McCain is NOT McSame or McBush. Obamites should realize this fact.

So far there is NO sign of Unity Effect between Hillary Democrats and Obamaniacs.

On Economy, on National Security, on Patriotism, on Foreign Policy, and on Name Recognition Obama is lagging behind McCain.

The Mother Of All Reasons is Obama is perceived to be another tricky politician from Chicago.

He will say or do ANYTHING to win the Election, period.

Obama = Inexperienced = Dangerous. Very Risky, say most Americans.

Mike,
I agree with you, though I have to inform you that Maryland's mortgage laws are not tough enough either. I almost bought a home there, but the lenders and the realtors were trying to sell me into a home I couldn't afford with an adjustable rate loan. I gave up and moved back to Virginia and into my old house. Had I followed their direction, nearly half of my paycheck would have gone to the mortgage and escrow. That is not an affordable or sustainable situation.

Now you myself, and every other sane person are paying higher property taxes because of the bubble built by idiots, and dealing with a failing economy due to the bubble built by idiots. I didn't personally need higher regulations for lending, because I was smart enough to live within my means and read my paperwork. You obviously did the same.
Those without our common sense need the protection from lenders, and we need them to have it in order to protect us from them.

I hear you on paying off early, I paid off over 10 years of my mortgage in the first year. I think I have about 13 years left on it. I don't make extra payments anymore because I'm back in college, but those payments I made while working helped a lot.

Who is the real Obama?

Is he the FAR LEFT bleeding liberal of the Primary Season or the Centrist of the potential Nominee of the Democratic Party?

Bush and McCain are just evil.

Bush lied about McCain's support of the Veteran bill. McCain voted against the bill yet Bush gave him credit for getting it passed. When the Vet asked about it, he just changes the subject and starts slamming Web.

I believe there is a special place in hell for liars and Bush not only lied but he waged a war based on one. Over a million people are dead because of his lie.

Revelation 21:8
“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

(Not saying specifically who is going there but this is the basis of my statement.)

It sounds like there is a special place in hell reserved for almost all politicians, corporate businessmen, stock traders, and lawyers. Oh yeah, and Republicans. lol

Revelation 21:8

This is the second death.”

It looks like heaven is going to be a lonely place filled with poor people.

apissedant said...

I realize everyone here realizes that Republicans are actually bad for the economy and the country, but I did something anyways. I got bored and looked at quote.yahoo.com for historical DJIA prices at the beginning and the end of Republican and Democratic presidential terms. It only goes back to 1928, so I did calculations with and without Hoover and the Great Depression.

The worst performing was obviously Hoover at a -55% annual return. Next in line was the duo of Nixon and Ford at just under 0% annual return. The best of the worst was Bush 43, with just under a 2% annual return.
The overall return for Republicans including Hoover was 1%, and without was just under 7%.

The best annual returns was of course Clinton, with a 14% annual return. Next in line was Ike, with 12%, and then Reagan and Bush with 11%.
The overall for Democrats was just over 8% annual return. The worst performing of the Democrats was Carter, with just over a 2% annual growth.

I think the DJIA is a terrible measure of the American economy, but it is the one that Republicans and the media love to use. I use it, because not even the measure they love so much supports them. Democrats win hands down, even without Hoover included in the measure.

To me, the meaning is obvious. Who cares what your tax rate is if your take home pay is higher? Investing the same million dollars, over and over in only Democratic administrations would have left you with 21.7 million dollars.
Doing the same in Republican administrations would have either left you 1.66 million dollars with Hoover, or 9.28 million dollars without Hoover. At Reagan's 28% marginal tax rate, this would have left you with either 510,000 in profits, or 6.46 million dollars in profits.
Under Clinton's 39.5% interest rate, profits would have been 13.46 million dollars.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would rather have 13.46 million dollars than 6.46 million, screw the tax rate, I care what ends up in my pocket.
Democrats aren't just better for the poor, the rich make more money too. I don't know why they don't understand that.

apissedant said...

Out of sheer boredom and curiosity, I did the same results with Congress. When Republicans controlled both houses, I counted it as R, and when Democrats controlled both houses, I counted it as D. If the two houses were split, it did not count.
Two of the three worst performing were Republican controlled, from 1929-1931, with an annual rate of -25.4%. The second worst was the current Democratic controlled, with -11%, and next is the Republican controlled session from 1947-1949, with 0% growth.
The overall Republican growth was 6.51% annually. The Democratic, including the current session, was 5.62%, and without the current session, it was 6.16%. Democrats controlled both houses of Congress for a total of 53.5 years, and Republicans controlled for a total of 16.5 years. All but the current Democratic controlled Congress showed some growth, though it was often much more moderate growth than the Republican held Congress when the Republican Congress actually had growth.

This is a measure of stability. Democrats showed controlled and consistent growth. Republicans showed much more volatility. This assessment is not completely fair however, because Democrats typically controlled for longer spans of times, and over the long run, growth will typically look moderate and positive. Short time periods will always make gains look larger, and losses look smaller. Due to this, the Presidential analysis should have greater weight.

Phil Gramm, a top economic adviser to John McCain, said that the current recession is just a mental recession, caused by us, "a nation of whiners." In response, John McCain stated that his advisers do not speak for him, that only he speaks for himself.

This coming from a man that attacked Barack Obama due to statements made by his advisers about NAFTA, and statements made by Rev. Wright about race. Apparently, Barack Obama is responsible for the actions and words of every person he has ever spoken to, while John McCain, who hopes to be President of the United States, and control a workforce of nearly 2 million civilians, and nearly 3 million active duty and reserve military members, is not responsible for anyone he chooses to hire.

How does a man campaign on a message of creating a more responsible government, while accepting no responsibility during his campaign?

Frmr. Senator Gramm's remarks had a little too much truth in it for McCain's taste.

From the point of view of those living off of dividends and multi-million dollar salares from multi-nationals, the economic fundamentals are relatively sound. They see no problem with outsourcing jobs. As long as the government steps in now and then to bail them out when they screw up royally (Enron, subprime mortgages, savings & loans), it's good to be the king (or queen). What's good for big corporations must be good for America. In their neighborhoods, they can still get home loans and have nice houses for sale. And if the working class doesn't agree, it's all in their heads and they should just have a nice piece of cake to get them in the right mood.

Of course, the fact that, for the average American squeezed between rising gas prices, rising food prices, rising and rising health care insurance premiums on the one side and stagnant wages and rising unemployment on the other, the economy doesn't look so golden is something that the elites of the Republican Party don't see as particularly important.

tmess2,
You know, I have watched a lot of news over the years, and I have never heard them ever mention conservative elitist or republican elitist. Only liberals, who talk about protecting the poor can be elitist, which makes me assume that the definition of elitist I learned as a child was wrong. Either that, or Republicans have one heck of a spin machine, and it has been kicking our butt for the past 28 years.

tmess,

Yeah, Gramm's comment really made McLame show how pitiful he really is. And he says that Gramm doesn't speak for him? This is his economic advisor!

Didn't you LOVE Obama's come-back?

Hello There:

For this week

Phil Gramm = Jesse Jackson Sr.

BHO's FISA flip-flop will be costly. He is a MOAFF.

How much did the Mother of All Flip-Flopper raise in campaign money for June '08?

Since they are silent, I suspect the numbers are not as good as McCain's 22 million.

RNC plus State Parties plan to raise nearly 200 million for McCain before receiving the 84 million from the Treasury after the Convention.

Can BHO match this amount? Probably not, IMO.

Because he is a MOAFF.

People just don't trust BHO as a serious National Leader, period.

Thought this was funny. At the 4th parade in Boone, NC the Republican float was handing out flags made in China and bombarding people with mints with flags on them. Both my daughter and a lady next to us got hit in the face. So I guess the Republican theory here is take our foreign made American flag or we'll bomb you!!

Could McCain have picked a better time to completely screw the pooch Leah? Keith, Jon, and Stephen are all out for the week. None of the big names on Comedy Central and MSNBC are around to blow all these missteps up to the actual size. If I were one of these three men, I'd be kicking myself for picking the wrong week to take a vacation.

Ap,
I was a bit concerned not hearing from Indy. Not like him.
Just to let you know Gay Pride is next week and it is huge.
My husband has worked the event for years.
It is right in his neighborhood.
The event is the second largest in the country.
I bet he is having a blast.

jean,
You know he might actually do things that don't involve gay activism. ;)
I'm pretty sure that just because he's gay doesn't mean he goes to every gay event and only gay events.
HAHA

McCain's big problem with having to spend his primary money now (or lose it on September 5th) is that his campaign isn't ready to spend the money.

Before you burn money on tv ads, you sort of need a message for the general. Is it any wonder that Obama is doing well where McCain is spending money?

jean,
Have a good night.

tmess2,
As it stands, I don't think McCain has a prayer. He is attempting to use the exact same campaign platform that Bush ran on both times. It is miraculously close in ideals and goals. No one really seems to believe it when McCain says it.
A) He was never like that, so the sudden change is odd and people don't buy it.
B) People are tired of Bush and don't approve of him or his policies anymore.
C) People don't like McCain as much as Bush. His personality... well, what personality?

He has to change something. This isn't working. He lost almost all of the independent support he had in 2000, and some of the Republican support.

RE: Phil Gramm

Don't forget about Phil Gramm and the Enron connection. I've lived in Texas all my life. Right as Enron collapsed, Gramm annouced he would not be running for re-election. That was a big shock in Texas since he would've been a shoe-in....barring a scandal like this. Curiously, Gramm's wife served on the Board of Enron; and was the ranking member of the Board of Director's Audit Team/Committee.

Hmm?
