Some additional info about Wendy Gramm, Phil Gramm's wife:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Gramm

She's a real piece of work of the worst kind - on the same level as McSame, her husband, Shrub, KKKarl Rove, Darth Cheney, and the rest of the Neo-Cons.

Listen to yourselves! My god, let's just all turn into the republican bloggers and spend more time talking about who's wife did what, who said what about who and whether someone is gay or not! Get a grip people! I don't think after all the trouble Matt and Oreo and the rest of the crew went to to provide us with this opportunity to communicate openly that they meant for a gossip column to arise out of it!

Ok p'd ant - I'm BACK!!!!!!!

Yes, finals are over and gay pride is next weekend (7/19 & 20) they are expecting between 150,000 & 200,000 people to attend.

With that said, I haven't been ignoring you, just been busy. We decided last weekend that we are going to have a Kathy Griffin "My Life on the D-List" party this coming weekend. She is the "main headliner" at out pride festival this year. SWEET! We figured we would get everyone hyped up for it.

That is why I wasn't on yesterday. Had to go shopping to get ready for the party, as well as clean up the house - not that it is that bad, but you know what I mean. We try to have a pre-pride party every year which works out really well, because it gives us a chance to do our "spring cleaning" even though it is in the middle of summer. :)

Wednesday I have no excuse except to say that we went out for dinner and drinks.

In addition to that I haven't really payed any attention to the news lately except in passing. I heard about the Gramm's comment that we are all whiners. My response is NO we are bitter at idiots like him who don't cannot would never be able to understand what the average American has to deal with day in day out. I hope he is losing a bundle in the stock market crash as well as lose his home, perhaps the monsoons will bring lightening into his life. LOL.

Oh I also heard about Obama forgetting to ask his donors at a joint event to open their wallets to help wipe out Clinton's debt. I also heard that Clinton's supporters aren't opening their wallets either because Obama isn't giving them "titles" like "chief Hillraiser" or some other self-indulgent title that gives them a sense of entitlement. WTF?

But then again, that could be just the media trying to keep the race "close". You never know, especially the way they have behaved this election cycle. They don't seem to understand the concept of real journalism these days. Can we say network tabloidism?

Karen Anne said...

Somewhere in my news travels this morning I read that Obama is really asking his fund raising types to get people to donate to Clinton, and that that is a tough row for them to hoe, because they want to concentrate on his campaign needs, not going to people twice for money.

Personally, if anyone belonged under the bus in terms of being bailed out of debt, it's Clinton. I would Just Say No. If she had run a decent campaign, it would be different.

Number crunching, if she owes about $20 mil, of which $10 mil is owed to herself, and Penn is apparently owed $8 mil as of a month ago, it sounds like she could pay off the small business people by reaching into her pocket for a few mil. Case closed after that, let Penn sue her.

Meanwhile in bizarro-land, the WSJ is saying Obama "only" raised $30 mil in June (McCain raised $22 mil), and blathers on about what a problem that is. But Obama's campaign instantly comes back and says they raised much more, but doesn't say how much,

Do you think they raised a ginormous amount, and were saving the story to release at some useful time, and the wsj is trying to prevent that?

Dave,
You boys and your shopping! I have a joke I told about you, that I will pass on to you when I know you're online. I want to delete it after you read it, so I have to know you're on. ;)

Karen,
I'm not overly worried about money this election cycle. First off, the amount of money being spent sickens me. It especially sickens me after I watched a program about the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The entire war could be prevented with about 20 million dollars in funding, but we would rather spend that money on the 3AM phone call commercial apparently.
The second reason, is because I'm grooming myself for dissapointment. I honestly cannot imagine losing this one, regardless of how much McCain raises, or how little Obama raises. It just seems like the wrong candidate and the wrong time to try to win as a Republican.

On another note,
Did anyone watch Hardball last night? I thought I was dreaming or dead or something. I agreed with Pat Buchanan the whole night. He complained about fair trade and the outsourcing of jobs, and a whole bunch of other things I never thought I would hear out of his lips. I was amazed.

As to the other person on Hardball, it was the little nut that screams about buying stocks. I have no idea why that guy is still on TV, you would have thought his assertion that we should all buy Bear Stearns the week before they went under would kill a stock analyst's job, but apparently not. He claimed GM is doing great, and that their only problem is that the domestic market is saturated, but their exports are doing great.

Has this man ever been outside this country!?!!?!??! In my travels to various European countries, I could count the number of GM cars I saw on my fingers. I drove all around Holland and Belgium, and took the train all around France and England. I saw 1, count them 1 GM dealership the entire time. I can't believe people are still called "experts" and still get away with this open markets increases jobs horse crap.

tmess2 said...

An open market only increases jobs if you are willing to compete. The Big Three have always thought that what will sell in America will sell in the rest of the world which is why CAFE scares them to death. Foreign automakers have had to emphasize fuel economy for sales in Europe for decades, giving them a big head start on producing cars that will meet appropriate fuel milage standards.

Of course, despite ruining their companies, the top executives of the Big Three still get salaries that exceed those of the top executives of these foreign automakers who are about to replace the Big Three at the top of the heap.

Hey p'd ant.

I'll be on for another hour or so, if you would like to post it. I'll respond quick so that you can delete it.

apissedant said...

tmess2,
True, but how low would our wages have to go to compete with third world nations? Could we still pay our bills? Would we have to scrap our environmental standards? The Republicans never talk about opening free trade with Europeans, who are environmentally conscious, good with worker safety, and pay more than enough to live on. We could compete with those countries. Instead they open free markets to every third world impoverished country in the world, and say we'll be able to sell our computers, software, and cars to them. The cost of any of these items is only equal to their lifetime wages, so they'll totally go for it!

So why have we never heard a Republican argument for European free trade? Could it be that they're all lying to us, and they're just looking to prey on the poor and uneducated? Could it be that they're not actually trying to expand their market beyond our borders at all, that really they're just trying to increase their profit margin on what they sell here?

Just to give you some info in mortgages.
The conforming jumbo by fannie and freddie said they would support amounts over $417,000 for 2-4 units.
Noone, no bank will do these loans and they will not purchase them.
CA is now out of the martket and quite a few others.
There are no investment loans for any property over $417,000.
There is a FEW 1 unit but not by Monday.
This is bad and happened just over the past few weeks.
Politically this is beyond.
McCain is clueless.
Stress is high, I have been walking 7-10 miles a day to burn it off.

jean said...

Indy,
That would of been a lot of fun.

With no product available for so many properties , well, holy crap.
Renters in 2-4 units have to be very careful.
Evictions are going to hit an all time high.
Dealing with high rates is one thing, no product is another.
Things being bad has not come close.
Why this is not common knowledge scares me.
Imagine going to get a car loan and the bank says we don't do those anymore.

If you use S&P 500 instead of DJIA, it goes: Clinton, Reagan/Bush, Carter, Nixon/Ford, and last with Bush 43.

No matter which market you use, the Democrats come up on top on fiscal performance.

Jean,

Ya, I have the feeling that they may postpone it even longer (originally it was set to take place this summer) due to the housing slowdown which actually started hitting San Diego in early-mid 2007. Several friends of ours had their homes on the market for over a year, and many of them had to take short sales. From what I have been told by them however is that Congress did get one thing right, the lost revenue by the bank on short sales are no longer considered income to the seller (at least for the moment.)

Weren't we supposed to have learned from that, and put in safeguards? What happened to our safeguards?

Herbert Hoover on the crash of 1929:
"A voluntary deed is infinitely more precious to our national ideas and spirit than a thousandfold poured from the Treasury,"
"No one is actually starving."
At the outset of the depression, Hoover rejected Treasury Secretary Mellon's suggested "leave-it-alone" approach,[12] but at the same time he declined to pursue legislative relief, believing that it would make people dependent on the federal government. Instead he organized a number of voluntary measures

Does any of this sound eerily familiar with the Republican Party of today?

Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. reiterated that philosophy in prepared testimony yesterday, saying: "For market discipline to be effective, market participants must not expect that lending from the Fed, or any other government support, is readily available."
Gramm: "We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today," he said. "We have benefited greatly"

Actually, if you had taken the TIME to READ what we posted, and clicked the links, you would find that Wendy Gramm and Phil Gramm, when it comes to 'econonomic thinking', are two peas in a pod.

From 1985 to 1988, Wendy Gramm was head of the Office of Management and Budget's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). Remember during this time it was Reagan saying "Let's get the government off people's backs" and the method he used was to cut, cut, cut out all regulations that he could? It was Wendy Gramm who was in charge of cutting the regulations - but only the ones that 'put a burden' on business, including regulations that protected workers. But since business had to pay a small amount to comply with those regulations, they had to go.

From 1988 to 1993, she was head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. After a lobbying campaign from Enron, the CFTC exempted it from regulation in trading of energy derivatives. Because Enron was not regulated, they were able to manipulate the energy markets in California and Texas. Remember the rolling blackouts in California? The direct result of Enron being unregulated.

Subsequently, Gramm resigned from the CFTC and took a seat on the Enron Board of Directors. Nice reward for helping Enron out, wouldn't you say?

After the Enron scandal, Gramm and the other directors of the energy company were named in several investor lawsuits, many of which have been settled. In particular, Gramm and other Enron directors agreed to an $168 million dollar settlement in a suit led by the University of California. As part of that settlement, the directors agreed to collectively pay $13 million to settle claims of insider trading. The remainder of the settlement was to be paid by insurance.

After leaving Enron (just before the crash), she became chairman of the Regulatory Studies Program at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, a free-market think tank based in Washington D.C. In 2002, OIRA solicited public recommendations for regulatory reform. Mercatus made 44 recommendations. And what were those recommendations? Cut regulation, cut regulation, cut regulation, cut regulation, cut regulation, cut regulation, cut regulation.

And just what is the Mercatus Center? Mercatus' stated mission is to integrate theory and practice to produce solutions that sustainably advance a free, prosperous, and civil society. In other words, it doesn't want ANY government regulation at all for business.

None. Nada. Zip.

If Wendy Gramm had been at EPA, there would be much less regulation, if any, on pollution, and fighting against green-house gas. The EPA wouldn't have stated "We'll study it some more." No, the EPA would have put out proposals to eliminate almost all regulations.

The Mercatus Center also advocates that businesses of any kind pay no taxes at all.

None. Nada. Zip.

Mercatus is the scum of the scum of the business world. The Mercatus Center makes the Chamber of Commerce, the Club for Growth, the CATO Institute, and other Neo-Con arch conservative groups look like pikers when it comes to advocating cutting government regulation.

Wendy Gramm is a MAJOR force in reactionary political thinking, and has a tremendous influence on Phil Gramm's economic thinking, who as McSame's economic advisor has a major influence on what economic plans McSame would try to get enacted if he were President. Just because Wendy Gramm hides behind the scenes doesn't mean she isn't influential in some political circles.

So talking about her is not 'gossiping' in the least bit, but getting the facts out into the light of day.

"It's been a week of big political gaffes for both the McCain and Obama campaigns."

What the hell country have these talking heads been living in this week? Obama's big gaffes include a guy who is not connected to the campaign saying something stupid, and asking people to donate money to Clinton 10 minutes after he was supposed to. Is this reverse affirmative action? Why are these gaffes being placed on the same level as McCain's much bigger gaffes?

We now owe more money to foreigners than we owed in total in 1989. 25% of our national debt is to foreigners and foreign nations, with Japan and China leading the pack.

The largest deficit reported under Bush, which was the record for the highest deficit in history, was 412 billion dollars (2004). Last year was reported as 270, and 2005, the third largest in history, was reported as 319.

Now I'm no math genius, but 9.5-5.7=3.8 trillion dollars. Bush has been in office for 7.5 years. 3.8/7.5 (in trillion)=507 billion dollars average deficit per year. This is 100 billion higher than the largest deficit ever recorded.

Social Security, interest on the national debt, and the war funding need to be included in our budget. Could you imagine running your household budget without including interest on your mortgage or your credit cards, or without including medical bills or legal fees?

Seems that the site for Senator Obama's speech in Berlin is causing a lot of problems for the White House and German Chancellor Merkel.

According to a Washington Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/11/AR2008071102967.html?hpid=topnews), some are stating that the White House put pressure on Merkel to stop the speech at the Brandenburg Gate. The White House, of course, is denying the charge (but when could be believe anything out of the White House? Before noon, January 20, 2001?).

Merkel's aides have said the chancellor thinks only elected foreign leaders should be allowed to use the Brandenburg Gate as a backdrop, and only for nonpartisan addresses. But the site has been employed by people other than heads of state before. On May 19, for example, the Dalai Lama spoke there. Ummm, who elected him?

The decision, though, lies with the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, a political rival of the chancellor. Wowereit has said that Obama can campaign wherever he pleases, including the gate.

And now the Brits are expressing feelings of being 'snubbed', since Senator Obama will touch down in Berlin before going to the UK.

The article also gives some info on the rest of the trip, who is accompanying Senator Obama, and recent polling in Germany as to whom they want to win the November election (Obama by 72-11!!)

I do have a problem with FOX News comparing him to Tim Russert. Except for the fact they both died very young, and that both were involved with politics and news, I see no comparison whatsoever.

Yup Leah, saw the update on NASCAR's website this morning that the Obama camp had dropped the car sponsor deal. One of the factors might have been that the car was a Toyota, not an American brand.

Oh well, at least Obama's name got on the NASCAR site. ;o)

Maybe a Chevy, Dodge, of Ford team will man up with a proposal.

Honestly, that was the first thing I noticed when I saw the whole thing get reported originally. I didn't care too much about the R next to all of the names, but the TOYOTA part was not good. I'm originally from the suburbs of Detroit, and I would have been a bit offended.

re: Lies about the debt.

I have followed the growth of the debt since the '80's on a spreadsheet and they don't fool me. A more close approximation of the truth is 1) The SS surplus is robbed but not counted and 2) The war costs...NOTHING!...because it is off budget. The administration from the start would not budget and amount for the war because the costs would be "hard" to forecast. Using Ev Dirksen's lingo.... $100B/yr for the war $100B/yr for SS..... sooner or later it adds up to real money.

Regan- Bush I took the debt from $1 trillion to $4.4 trillion in 12 yrs. Bush II will take it from $5.6 trillion to $9.9 trillion. So 8 out of 10 trillion of our total debt lies at the feet of Regan-Bush-Bush. They are truly the free spending "liberals" who keep our taxes high.

Our highest ever debt was $0.25 trillion dollars after WWII. but that was 125% of GDP...equal to about $18 trillion compared to today's GDP.

But thru the cold war years and even Vietnam it reached as low as 33% of GDP. Like a debt of $4-5 trillion today.

apissedant said...

billjay,
Completely agreed. A funny and terrible graph is shown at the skeptical optimist's website. If you google him, you'll be either spewing your breakfast all over the screen, or pulling out your hair within ten minutes. He makes a terrible graph that goes back all the way to the Revolution, and tries to use the two Gulf Wars, and the 80s buildup of the Cold War as the reasoning for the increase in percentage. He compares them to WWII and the Civil War. The Korean War and Vietnam aren't even mentioned. Apparently, they just weren't as big of wars as Iraqi Freedom and the Gulf War.

Republican Spin

billyjay66 said...

appisedant

According to that "republican spin" graph the economic growth curve was in reverse during the Regan-Bush years I thought they bragged about the great growth thru those years.

Also during the best decline in the debt curve (1950-80) we spent money on Korean War,Space race, Created Medicare-Medicaid, cold War buildup, Vietnam. But what we had were taxes that were in line with expenses.

The only new policy since 1980 is "tax-cut and spend" -or in other words Mortgage Our Future.

A lie that has continued since the Regan years (unchallenged) is that taxes can be reduced and revenues will still increase. In raw dollar terms revenues slightly increase, but in terms of GDP% the only thing that goes up it the debt.

apissedant said...

GDP vs. Debt

The above posted is a much better graph of the same item. It doesn't go back to 1792, which is useless anyways, and it identifies which party was in power during each period.

I love your, "mortgage our future" line. I plan to steal that, and I won't be sourcing you, just so you know.

As to the lie about revenues increasing, there is a point where it is true. If taxes were at 90%, a tax cut would increase productivity and lead to an increase in revenue. I do not doubt that theory, but I don't think it applies when dividend tax rates are 12%, or the marginal tax rate is 35%. These have been repudiated with countless historical data, and the fact is that people get to keep most of the money they earn, so they still work hard and earn it. I did a long and crazy and probably nonsensical post on this several weeks ago. I attempted to compare it to a company maximizing profits by deciding a production amount and a price that maximizes sales receipts (supply and demand), and minimizes costs of production (economies of scale). We are not at that maximized potential, and we are most definitely not beyond that point.

p'd ant - looking at you post about Tony Snow, totally agree. Tim Russert was a MUCH better journalist and interviewer than ANY of the Faux news people. How ANYONE can compare the two in equivalent terms is beyond me. I have noticed however, the news channels (not even Faux news) aren't really talking about him like they did when Tim died. Perhaps they even know there is no comparison.

I'm sure Faux will be covering it pretty heavily later on, but I doubt it will be to the extent they covered Tim.

tmess2 said...

It's hard talking honestly about the national debt because there are several different measures.

First, there is the annual budget deficit/surplus. However, certain things that should be off-budget like Social Security are on-budget and other things that should be on-budget like the war in Iraq are considered off-budget as "one time expenditures."

Second, there is the total national debt. This total includes as the debt owed to the trust funds (primarily Social Security but there are others).

Finally, there is the privately held debt (the one that the government can't just forgive).

Because you have these different numbers, it is easy to play games with the media who just don't want to work that hard to get to the bottom of it (with the exception of some partisan talking heads).

As to why the MSM is trying to make Obama's non-problems this week look as bad as McCain's serious blunders, there are two reasons. First, the MSM like to appear fair. Unfortunately, the way that they try to be fair is when what is happening actually does favor one side they try to make the news a little more ambiguous so that it appears that they are treating everyone equally. Second, a close race makes better news so they try to make the race look closer than it is and being more negative about the candidate in the lead helps in that respect.

apissedant said...

Another Democrat is caught up in a housing "scandal". Congressman Rangel of Harlem is renting 4 apartments in Harlem, and all 4 are rent controlled. He is getting them at less than half of market value due to rent control. Three of them have been converted into one apartment, his primary residence, and the forth is used as his campaign office. The 4th is illegal under NYC and NY state laws. Law requires that rent controlled property be used for primary residence only, though the odds of him realizing this until the media uproar is low. He has already agreed to vacate this apartment if the review of it does indeed find that he cannot legally rent it, which it most likely will.

There is an uproar about the other two as well, because the law allows landlords to kick out tenants in all but one apartment, in order to make room for other, higher paying tenants. Since the landlord chose against kicking him out, the media is trying to label this as a gift.

There are two stories about it in the New York Times. The "liberal" media's assault on elected Democratic officials who have done nothing wrong continues.

Most of the Company Surveys give a near TIE for BHO and McCain.

Then how in the world BHO can get more than 251 EVs?

Kerry had good name recognition, unlike BHO, and had tons of money and the support of ALL the liberal Democrats! He received nearly 59 million votes but only 251 EVs.

Therefore, BHO has no chance. He will not get anything more than 251 EVs.

None of the Red States he won in the Primary will vote for him. It is a strange state of affairs: The States that he lost to Hillary in the Primary only will vote for BHO in the GE!

BHO = Inexperienced = Risky
BHO = Mother of All Flip-Floppers MOAFF.

Just because there were very few people obese 100 years ago when people ate a healthy and smaller portion, and actually moved every once in awhile, and now people are all obese, don't move, and eat huge portions of McDonald's, doesn't mean it is there fault. I assume by this argument, that it must be some sort of genetic mutation.

suzi,
You'll lose MPG on E85, but not on gasoline with ethanol additive. Ethanol is just taking the place of MTBE, which was found to be toxic and outlawed. 10% actually improves combustion and MPG vs. no additive at all.

It has to do with the amount of energy released, and ethanol releases less when it combusts than gasoline does.

tmess2 said...

If you want to reduce the influence of spin, take a look at the parliamentary systems. In those countries, you have the leader of the opposition typically in place 12-15 months or more prior to the election. The leader gets to go face-to-face with the head of government every week that Parliament is in session until the election is called.

The result is that both candidates are pretty well known as are the differences between the two parties. The campaign is essentially over before it even begins and very little that the advertisers can do to move folks since are so few undeciceds.

All of us have heard the false meme that Senator Obama is a 'secret Muslim'. Certainly a couple of posters here have been trying to beat that dead drum.

A recent Pew poll (http://people-press.org/reports/questionnaires/436.pdf) has found that that meme has not saturated 100% of the populace:

June 2008 Voter Attitudes Survey
Final Topline
conducted June 18-29, 2008

Q.50:
Now, thinking about Barack Obama’s religious beliefs… Do you happen to know what Barack Obama’s
religion is? Is he Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, agnostic, or something else?

Of those answeringL
57% responded Christian;
12% Muslim;
<.5% each for Buddhist, Hindu, atheist or agnostic;
10% Don’t know - Heard different things (Volunteered);
15% Don’t know - Haven’t heard enough (Volunteered); and
3% Refused.

Here's the kicker - 1% think Senator Obama is a JEW!

I guess the O'Lielly's, Lush Rimbaugh's, Faux News, et al, haven't been doing their jobs for the RNC and Mc"need a"Cain campaign if 1% think he's a Jew.

Iraqi leaders call for a timetable for U.S. withdrawal, McCain gets caught in a bizarre denial and flip flop. The Iraqis now want us to begin planning our withdrawal -- McCain however wants to stay foooorrreeevvveerrrr. So what does McCain say -- First, he refuses to accept Maliki's statement as being true. Then he concedes that it was an accurate statement, but was probably just a political ploy to curry favor with his own people and WOULD NOT influence his determination to keep US troops in Iraq indefinitely. Yet, McCain in 2004 at the Council on Foreign Relations said that if the Iraqis asked us to leave, we would have to go. No matter what. There's one thing I'll have to say when seeing how "close" some polls seem to be right now, that's when people really seem to get motivated to go to the polls. So isn't it a good thing if msm makes it seem so close? Not that I'm not sending in a few emails anyway, starting with Alexander(R)-TN.

"Not a drop of oil was spilled during the 2005 hurricanes."

In fact, over 15,000 barrels were spilled during the 2005 hurricanes.

They also say that it isn't their fault that the resources already leased to them by the federal government, accounting to an area greater than all of the northeast, is because they don't have enough equipment to tap all of these resources. Despite this, they still say we need to give them more oil contracts so they can increase production. They can't keep up with their current deals, yet they're blaming us for not giving them more deals.

IF the guesses on the amount of oil are correct, it MIGHT give us 10-20 years of extra oil, BUT not until 2030, and it MIGHT have a small impact on oil prices, and PROBABLY will have minimal affect on the environment.

Wow, I'm sold. IF MIGHT BUT MIGHT SMALL PROBABLY. Sounds like a closed case to me.

AP,

That same article has this:
Many oil companies and Bush administration officials say that it is hypocritical to pressure other countries to open new exploration areas, especially offshore

And just who is pressuring "other countries to open new exploration areas, especially offshore"? The oil companies and the Bush administration. So who are the hypocrites?

Mike, I love it, very good point. I, and most democrats, have continually cautioned people that we can't drill our way out of this miss, not here, nor abroad. There's a recent plan to switch more power generation to windmills and start switching cars to natural gas in the short term. Europe already has propane powered vehicles and most gas stations have a propane nozzle. The use gas until the car heats up, and then switch over to propane automatically. It isn't ideal, but for the short term it may help.

Not exactly an unbiased source, but here is what FPL Energy states:
How long does the entire development process take, i.e., from submitting permits to producing electricity?

The length of time will vary from project to project, but wind farms can be brought on-stream faster than most other types of power-generating facilities - for example, natural gas power plants, which can take two to three years or more to develop. The permitting process for wind is less complex because wind energy does not have the same environmental impact as fossil-fueled power generators. Wind energy produces no emissions and no solid waste by-products. The length of construction will depend primarily upon the number of turbines to be erected, the terrain and prevailing weather conditions. In some cases, this can all be accomplished within nine to 18 months.

Let's say five years to get a seriously large number of turbines up and running... that is a lot sooner than 2030, which is when oil companies and the Energy Department believe new oil fields would start paying off.

So how exactly is Obama supposed to get rid of his "surrogate" Jackson? Since he never hired him, he can't fire him. McCain gets to dump his guy, because he was dumb enough to hire him in the first place. Obama is stuck because he was smart enough not to hire such a divisive person that would pollute his message. Doesn't seem fair, does it?

Hi Democrats:

What's burning your midnight's oil these days?

Most observers believe that Barack is moving towards the Center.

Good for him.

I want him to shed the old image of a "Tax and Spend Bleeding Liberal". The new image of a "Pragmatist who will govern from the Center" is a winning name. However, many of the ultra Left will not be kind to him. My suggestion is he MUST sacrifice the Jesse Jacksons of the world to convince the Center that he is a serious Leader. He is NOT a man of racial issues: He is truly post- race and post-class warfare candidate.

I also want him to take one or two major issues to tackle from a bag of extremely difficult issues:

1. Universal Health Care for ALL: How to contain the costs of Medicare and Medicaid and provide health insurance for ALL for an affordable price (7% of GDP)?

2. Economic Competitiveness of America by overhauling the tax code: How to create 3 million plus jobs in America?

3. Energy Security of America. How to stop sending $700 billion a year away from our Economy to the troubled lands of Middle East for oil imports?

This GE could very well be a true referendum on major intractable issues. Let the voters choose who can deliver a convincing answer to these painful questions.

I am truly surprised that McCain and Obama both are tied at 46% as per Rasmussen Report, as of today. I expect that the Candidates will breakout when

1. They announce their VP choice.

2. After Obama's visit from Middle East.

3. After their Convention and of course

4. After the debates.

If, at the end of the day, Barack comes across as a strong Pragmatic Centrist with Fiscal Discipline, he will win the Presidency with a clear mandate similar to Bill Clinton of 1992/1996.

On the other hand, if he remains the Far Left Liberal of Carter/Jesse/Mondale, then the GE will be the same as of 1980, 1988, 2000 and 2004.

Awaiting the Debates to start.

Cheers.

Yam,

apissedant said...

I would like to point out, that the last time McCain held a lead in any poll was on 5/3, and it was by 1 point. A single poll showing a tie is not very troubling, when all other polls show a lead. The polls that showed 15% leads for Obama were obviously outliers, and I would assume that one showing a tie is as well.

It is not the President's job to create jobs. As a moderate, you should agree with this statement. It IS the President's job to create an environment that invites the creation of jobs. This has been devised by making America competitive. This can be done by shutting down or restricting trade agreements with nations that refuse to use fair trade, and opening trade agreements or reducing trade restrictions for countries who do practice fair trade.

I still propose ending NAFTA and CAFTA, and opening free trade with Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. I am not against free trade, I am for fair trade. There is a marked difference.

As to energy independence, this is talked about by the expansion of renewable energies, and not those grown in the ground, but those using water, wind, or the sun, items that can be harnessed without destruction of other important items. It has also been proposed that we increase conservation, which will cause a substantial decrease in foreign reliance. I wish he would loosen up on the nuclear rhetoric, but that is hard as a democrat in the current climate.

Is proposed healthcare plan is not universal, which makes the costs substantially less burdensome. The main goal is universal healthcare for children, which is an entirely different beast in itself. Universal healthcare will hopefully come at some later date, but not most likely not in the immediate future. Many reports have found that government healthcare essentially pays for itself in the long run. It reduces time off work, increasing American productivity, and decreases major healthcare costs in the future, by properly providing preventative care, which even most insured Americans are not using due to copays.

In the end, the healthcare portion is not so much about the cost of doing it, but the long term costs of not doing it. It seems a little pain now could save us much more pain in the future.

Read the link I have posted above from the New York Times. It talks about deregulation, the free market, and the fact that the free market is now begging for government handouts, because it can no longer support itself. We tried a virtually unregulated and free market again, and it failed again. Again, the same people that begged for the free market are begging for the government to step in. They want the government to allow them to make obscene profits when things go well, and prevent them from taking losses when things go poorly. You cannot have it both ways, either the government regulates the market, or the market is allowed to rise and fall on its own.

Starting this weekend, though, I had to stop on one piece of email I received. The Subject was "Barak Obama graft trial begins". I HAD to open it to see what the Reich-wing b****rds were sending now.

Turns out it is just plain old SPAM for a medication to 'enlarge a certain part of the male anatomy', along with a URL.

This REALLY frosts me, though, as most people will quickly recognize it as SPAM, but the subliminal message they will remember is "Barak Obama graft trial begins", and the memory will be as hard to disprove as the stupid meme that Senator Obama is a Muslim.

Is Jim Cramer Ever Right?

In this article from 2004, he speaks about how big and powerful Fannie Mae is, and he suggests buying it. Glad I didn't take that advice. He again asserted to buy Fannie Mae in November of 2006, when it was trading for 62 dollars a share. Not until August of 2007 did he finally stop rating it a buy. He did not, however, rate it a sell, while it was trading at 67.5. Not until November 16th, 2007 did he finally say to sell Fannie Mae stocks. It was trading at 40.69 at the time. On May 15, 2008, he again rated Fannie Mae a buy. The stock was trading at 29.56 a share, and is now at 10.25.

jean, yes I saw that and although it is extremely tacky and disgusting of them to put that on the cover.

With that said, I do understand what they were "trying" to do. Their readers are mostly liberal and well-educated, I think they were actually using that to mock the Republican smears and their straw-man arguments about Obama being a Muslim, unpatriotic, flag-burning liberal.

Like I said, I do not agree with their choice of placing that on the cover, but understand the point they were trying to convey. I look forward to the "fairness doctrine" when they finally decide they put Mc"Needs A"Cain and Bush in Nazi uniforms with Iraq as a backdrop.

Sometimes "free speech" has its consequences. Hopefully the New Yorker feels the pain, of those consequences for their bad judgment, in their pocketbook. This could be the beginning of the end for the New Yorker.

One of the things about the DCW President Forecast chart that I have always found somewhat frustrating is that it is organized by the number of electoral votes for each state and it is therefore difficult (for me anyway) to track where changes are happening.

So what I did was come up with an "Obama Number" for each of the 50 states plus DC. The number is a compilation of all 9 sources used in the DCW chart. Each O = +3 pts, OL = 1, T=0, ML = -1 and M = -3. I then sort based on the Obama Number and can track changes in states over time.

So, for example, right now Wisconsin is at 19. A month ago it was at 5. That shows to me that Obama has seen positive movement in his chances there. Montana went from -13 a month ago to -3 today. Thus a month ago I would not have considered Montana in play but now it obviously is. (I consider anything in the range of +9 to -9 as really close.)

Using my Obama number what are some of the major movements in the last month? NJ, NH and Wisc have moved from really close to Obama more than likely (+10 to +19 range). Montana and Indiana moved from McCain more than likely (-10 to -19 range) to the real close category. Obama also made inroads in the McCain hold on Texas and Mississippi (+8 movement) by taking those states from my Solid McCain (-20 to -27 range) and moving them into the more than McCain likely category. McCain tighten his grip on LA was the only really positive note for McCain.

Not a bad month for Obama.

For some reason I could not post this comment in that thread....

Oregon Dem -
You had a better idea than I did. I made a chart that lists the states and I put O, OL, M, ML, T for each state (DCW consensus)on the 1st and 15th of each month. It is a good way to eyeball the ups and downs of the consensus of the nine DCW sources - but your idea is pretty clever :)
On the other comment areas on DCW that have the 'new commenting format' they have a limit to the length of the comments, so that might be why your comment wouldn't post.

Dave,

In my earlier days when I went out drinking, I found that one way to ease or prevent the morning-after hangover was to take a couple of ibuprofen or aspirin when I got home, and drink at least 8 ounces of water, then hit the sack. It definitely helped make me feel better the next morning (although you might have to get up during the night for a 'potty break' - VBG). Whenever I forgot to take the ibuprofen and water, I definitely had a worse hangover than when I took them.

Hello There:

On The New Yorker Satire:

A full 60% of AOL Subscribers (n =142k) think that the Satire will NOT have a lasting impact on the Campaign.

I don't know why the Obamaphiles are over reacting to the pure and simple Satire?

The fact of the matter is nearly 44% of Americans don't know that BHO IS a Christian. To many of them, he IS a foreigner, an African, not an American, period.

What does this tell you? The Democratic Party and their Campaign have done a very poor job of introducing the Candidate to America:

As to who he WAS and who he IS, Is he a Bleeding Liberal or What?

There ARE many lingering doubts about Barack Hussein Obama Jr in the heartland of America. Most of his supporters CAN'T say his full legal name w/o feeling an inner demon of "something odd and unnecessary"!! A pathetic feeling inside their aching belly!

For some weird reason, the Democratic Party has taken a very huge RISK in nominating the least vetted, least experienced and vastly unknown Candidate of very ambiguous Biography for the POTUS.

What The New Yorker is doing is a serious service to the Democrats. Believe me. At least we have this discussion in mid July, not in late October, 2008.

Obamaphiles, talk openly and frankly about Who Obama IS now, instead of hiding behind the curtain of collective confusion and demagogy.

What is BHO's real relationship between the Civil Right Wing of the Black America? Is Jesse a true friend or what?

BHO is talking about his White Grandfather in KS, and talking about Wright and TUCC of Chicago in MS. This creates a vast sense of some unseemly conspiracy to dupe the Electorate, who are truly very smart people, IMO.

Common Obamaphiles, get started in openly defining who Obama is!

Stay tuned.

Will Mc"needs a"Cain throw Cindy under the bus for that comment about travel in Arizona? Or deny knowing her, as that comment is not his opinion about the matter?

Texas is more than twice the land area of Arizona (268,820 vs. 113,889 sq. mi). I don't hear a lot of Texans stating that the only way to get around Texas is by airplane. Even California is larger than Arizona (163,696 sq mi). As far as I know, Ahhh-nold doesn't own a private plane to go around the state.

Rich people can't pay taxes, it is bad for the economy! They need their millions and billions of dollars in order to be able to afford to hire us to do their laundry, nails, cook for them, build them stuff, and all of that other stuff. If they didn't have it all, who would pay our salaries!

Now this is not to say the government doesn't need money, which means the government does have to tax someone. They can't tax imports, because that is unfair trade. They can't tax corporations for the same reason they can't tax rich people. They can't tax churches because God would create wildfires, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and bring other devastation to the U.S. That only leaves the poor and middle class people. Considering they're constantly begging the government to educate their children, pay the fire department, and pay their welfare checks. Since they are constantly leaning on the government, they should have to pay for it! It isn't like the government gives big corporations or wealthy people huge payouts, pork projects, and bailouts in times of need.
