Lunchtime Quiz Question

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

What do socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political activists and something called "hactivists" have in common?

Along with "others", they all use Twitter.

So says the Federation of American Scientists in a draft Army Intelligence Paper. (And I only use the word "Intelligence" because it's in the official title.)

I heard this as I was walking into the house from phone banking, and the words came out of Rachel Maddow's mouth in the TV. So I looked it up. And there it was.

If you click the "here" link within the item, check out page 7.

I'm guessing they are saying Twitter is popular, because having included "others", they're pretty much saying "lots of people."

I did not vote in the Twitter survey as my situation was not listed. I am closer to "Huh," but have used Twitter for the last several presidential debates. I was reading the feed from Chris "The Fix" Cilizza of the Washington Post. During the debates I also made some posts of my own, but aside from that I am not an active user. So I am not presently following anything on Twitter.

twitter = technology carried to an insane extreme :-)

what is twitter? is it blogging? a social networking site? a messageboard?

what makes it special?

why should I look into it more, given that I'm on this blog, plus three message boards, plus have several email addresses?

Twitter is effectively blogging in 140-character bursts. It caters to the short-attention-span crowd, as well as the I've-got-something-to-say-and-all-I-have-is-my-160-character-cell-phone crowd.

You can read our Twitter feeds at https://twitter.com/OreoDemConWatch to get an idea.
It's an easy way to get info out there. I'm able to post and read twitter on my blackberry.

Vicki -- I feel your pain. I believe that once we got past two tin cans and a string, technology had gone too far. That said, I have 3 phone numbers and 8 e-mail addresses. I also have a Twitter account -- mostly to follow Oreo. Because when I do, I am able to see which posts went up on DCW --very handy on a cell phone. In addition, he posts good stuff.

I have practiced writing "tweets", as they're called, just to see if I could master the technology. And it's actually simple, you sign in, and a little box pops up where you can say something. (I have not yet said anything interesting on twitter much beyond "test"). But starting on Saturday morning, I'll be in full campaign mode. And I can't necessarily get to a computer, but I CAN easily pop out lines from "on the ground" in Chester County -- how our volunteers are doing, what the people are saying. And on Wednesday, how busy the polls are, and eventually, what the vote count is.

What's especially good for someone like me, who tends to be verbose, is that it's necessary to synthesize down to the essence of what you want to say.

ah. sounds like it's useful if you have a blackberry, or something like that.

maybe I'll get one of those for Christmas, if I'm good this year.

on the other hand, it sounds like it could be extraordinarily useful next Tuesday - to keep in touch in the event of voter problems.
