Sports for Dummies

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

I'm a sports idiot. Trust me on this.

I present this video for your viewing pleasure because after decades of people trying to explain football to me, I finally get it. A fond call out to my brother and cousins who sat with me for YEARS of my childhood with a chalkboard, X's and O's. It WAS Greek to me. No more.

As an true independent who reads http://www.gop.com/blog/ and checks http://www.demconwatchblog.com too many times each day, I can say that DocJess is one of the most informed, intelligent, passionate, and clear writers I've been reading. That said, I was a little mortified by her comment Tuesday evening regarding the weather-suspended game between the Phillies and Rays in which she said, "and from what people who know sports tell me, it's an important game." It's not a politics thing, but, come on, Game 5 of the World Series!?!

However, today she referred to herself as, "a sports idiot. Trust me on this." What gives?

Thank you for your kind words.

I guess the easiest way to explain it is that there are people I actually KNOW KNOW who read this blog. (Friends and family). They know me. I know them. DECADES. I read every comment that everyone posts, and from so doing, I "feel" incorrectly that I have a sense about a lot of the people who post here. There are many people whose comments I look forward to, because they have a different take on things, they are insightful, and funny. They share my political passion, they give me hope and joy.

Between working my regular job, blogging, and working the campaign, I'm tired. REALLY TIRED. I sometimes forget to remember that the overwhelming majority of people who read this blog are strangers to me. And for the past several months, if any of my actual known-in-real-life friends and family want to see me, they either work the phone bank, canvass, voter registration, or do something else that is completely political. I miss them, and look forward to some "normal conversation" after next Tuesday.

The standing joke amoungst my friends and family is that I really AM a sports idiot. While, yes, I know what the World Series is, and how rare a Phillies victory would be, I don't watch the games. That would take time from the election. And in general, while other people are watching sports, I'm doing political research (one of the reasons that I seem to be informed is that I have years of detailed files), or out registering voters (even in off years), or working on a public service or volunteer project. But most people I KNOW KNOW have their teams, they know their stats as well as I know the background on some obscure race. The line is "Jessica only knows sports stars once they run for office." My "idiocy" is comparative to their level of knowledge.

So pulling it all together -- the aside about the World Series, and the sports idiot line, were a gentle "hello" to the people I love and miss in real life. An "inside joke" if you will. I hope you are no longer mortified!

Thank you so much for understanding the playful nature of what I was trying to say. This season has made pre-analyzing every comment both of the utmost importance (to avoid misunderstandings) and, frankly, a great inconvenience.

I'm an evangelical Christian and public school teacher. I have many dear friends deeply committed to both sides of these discussions. So many things I've read have been embarrassingly ridiculous. While a tone of bias is occassionally evident in your writing, I truly meant what I said; your work has been great and I look forward to reading more.
