Obama Transition Project

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

The Obama campaign has opened a new fund-raising front, I've learned, creating a nonprofit entity to bankroll Barack Obama's presidential transition operation, quietly in business for months.

The organization is called the "Obama Transition Project." The money is being raised from individual donors -- no Internet, direct mail or events -- with a $5,000 donation cap. Under self-imposed rules, lobbyists will not be allowed to contribute.

Though Obama has raised more than $600 million for his White House bid, legally it is for the election only. The first disclosure report does not have to be filed until Nov. 15

The Obama campaign, which has made transparency a centerpiece, is not making any voluntary early disclosures. - Sun-Times
Obama is ready to hit the ground running on Wednesday.

What happens to any money left over, if there is any, from the general campaign funds, can he save it until 2012? Use it for other Democrats' 2008 debts or 2012 races, including his? I remember that it couldn't be used to pay off Hillary's debt, so presumably not the former.

I wish I could donate!. I have been looking all over the internet for a way to donate. Trust me when I say if he opened it up to the general public he would have way more money than he could ever spend in 73 days. I guess he is looking out for the little guy like me who wouldget carried away. I am so impressed that he is continuing healthcare benefits for all of his campaign's employees through the end of the year and paying them through the end of November. That was unheard of in prior campaigns. He is a man of the people.

My understanding is that money left from one campaign can be saved and spent on subsequent campaigns. In fact, I think a candidate can transfer the money to another candidate's campaign. For donors who want to keep the momentum going, there are lots of options. You can donate to the issue organization of your choice, the DNC, the DCCC, or the DSCC. On barackobama.com, the donate button now sends money to the DNC.
