Terrorist Attack in Mumbai

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

From the Transition Team:

"President-Elect Obama strongly condemns today's terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the people of India. These coordinated attacks on innocent civilians demonstrate the grave and urgent threat of terrorism. The United States must continue to strengthen our partnerships with India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks. We stand with the people of India, whose democracy will prove far more resilient than the hateful ideology that led to these attacks,” said Brooke Anderson, Chief National Security Spokesperson.

Mumbai (Bombay) is on the west coast of India.

Update:
This evening, President-elect Obama called Secretary of State Rice to get an update and status report on the situation in Mumbai. President-elect Obama then called Indian Ambassador Sen and conveyed that his thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic situation. He said that there is just one president at a time. He also told him that he is monitoring the situation and has been in communication with Secretary Rice.

This is the first time I've heard what should be major international news from DCW first. (BBC and Trib did not deem is Breaking News-worthy, at least not yet. AJC beat LAT to my inbox by half an hour, but I hadn't had all my e-mail load yet before I saw it here. And the ADN is just in with it, two hours later still.)

Not knowing yet who is responsible, this attack serves as a reminder that terrorism is broader than just attacks on American soil (a fact that has often been forgotten over the past six years) and is even broader than one group of terrorists. Hopefully, the next Administration will understand this better than the current one.

There was also an attack on the US Embassy in Afghanstan.

I wonder if there is any reason to think these are related attacks?

India unfortunately has been a victim of co-ordinated terror strikes that have originated from across the border. Unfortunately it is India that has been bearing the brunt from very long of the global terrorist onslaught, alas! the world has woken up only now to condem it.
But trust me we will all bounce back, we are back in office and tomorrow onwards we will fight these terrorists with vengence.
India will not cow down to any threats.

Time and again we have to realize that helping rogue nations like Pakistan is not going to solve anything. Pakistan is still the breeding ground for terrorists. I just saw on one of the Indian networks that these attacks have been carried out by Pakistani nationals. One of the terrorists is from Faridkot in Pakistan. It is an irony that one hand US is giving lot of aid to Pakistan for support in the war against terror but on the other hand Pakistan still harbors terrorists who attack US forces. The next adminstration should give more thought on how the aid is being used or misused.

Problem in Pakistan is that the key intelligence ageny ISI is not control led by the civic administration. ISI is in cahoots with the terrorist organizations and have masterminded terrorist attacks. Till Pakistan is able to fix these issues the new US administration should shy away from giving any aid which will eventually be misued. Hopefully President elect Obama takes some stern action against Pak.

So why are western, and eastern leaders roundly condemning these heinous acts of violence, and islamic leaders standing silently? Where is the sympathy, love, and understanding for the innocent victims? Considering the claim of responsibility has already been made by an Islamic group, where are the so called leaders of islam? Why did they not denounce these radical criminal acts immediately? True leaders of people? True to their beliefs in the unity of love for all men as taught in the holy Koran? or opportunistic, hypocritical politicians unwilling to stand against the fear and hatred that perpetuates killing and violence. Power corrupts those who accept its absolute value, those who fail to see the great value of even the frailest human being have never looked in a mirror and felt akin to that person that they see.

i havent seen a silence of islamic leaders. i have seen a silence of western leaders condemning the actions of western powers that create a climate where terrorists are easily recruited in so many oppressed societies

Eight years of neo-conservative Republicanism has ensured that the world will not be a safe place for Westerners for a long while.

Terrorism won't stop until we change US Foreign Policy.

Gabe dont be naive if you even look different you are a target no matter what U.S. foreign policy is being exercised. The purpose of these attacks will come to light eventually. My estimate is radical islamic non state funded terror cell possibly rogue elements of intelligence and or military involved. purpose: To relieve pressure on northwestern Pakistan tribal areas by creating crisis between Pakistan and India. Diversion of Pakistani troops from ongoing operations in the northwest to the Indian border. Public sentiment in India will create a necessity for political/ military action, a movement of troops to border areas may be used as a show, but Islamabad will then be forced to reallign troops to counter possible Indian threat. The concern then may turn to internal tension between hindus and muslims in India which may boil over and become violent

It is so easy these days for oppressed people to get a week of training, travel half the world and blow a building or take hostages. Religion has something to do with it but not a lot. It is globalization, it is extremely poor and extremely rich. We need to have Asia and Africa close the gap to Europe and USA.
