Tom Davis resigns

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Rep. Tom Davis resigned from Congress on Monday. Davis considered, but then decided not to run for the Senate seat just won by Mark Warner. Then he announced in January that he wouldn't be running for re-election this year.

The seat will remain vacant until filled by Democrat Gerry Connolly when the new term starts in January.

And then there were 434 ....

Anyone else notice the first paragraph of that release says IL-11, not VA-11?

Makes me wonder if someone in the Clerk Of The House's office is expecting the same from Jerry Weller. (Either that or someone wants to remind us here in the Prairie State that we're still short a Senator.)

Maybe they had Danny Davis IL-7 on the brain since Danny is in the news today too being considered for Obama's senate seat.

So he's retiring a few weeks early? Why? Is this some weird end-run against lobbying restrictions or something?

I think so; his Wikipedia page says, "On November 17, 2008, Davis joined Deloitte Consulting in their Washington, D.C. office."

Al Wynn of Maryland (and many others, I'm sure) did the same thing - after he lost a primary to Donna Edwards, he resigned, as you can't lobby members of Congress for a year after leaving office.

Just have to make a little addition to what I wrote: according to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...Davis "will not be lobbying for the firm but will be a director helping to oversee its Washington operation." But it's good to keep one's options open, I guess.

Doesn't sound very patriotic to me. In my opinion, folks that hold state or national office should serve the whole term for which they were elected or appointed unless there is a medical reason or scandal. Of course Obama would be exempt from my comment since he is busy getting his administration together and is actually serving our country right now with more important matters than what he could be doing if he was still holding his senate seat.

leah, i tend to agree, but i dont see how obama gets a free pass. whats good for the goose is good for the gander, seems like both cases it is about folks moving on to their next job. and i guess in america, one still has the right to quit whenever. i wonder how this will effect his constituents between now and the end of his term...

I think there's a big difference. If Davis had something that he had to start on January 20, then they'd be a bit more similar. Obama can't delay his next job...as far as I can tell, Davis could have.
