GA Senate: James Carville Makes Fundraising Pitch For Jim Martin

With Republican presidential nominee John McCain in Georgia today campaigning and raising money on behalf of Senator Saxby Chambliss [Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution, "McCain to campaign for Chambliss in Cobb", November 12, 2008], one of the nation's most famous Democratic strategists asked supporters of Jim Martin to pony up some cash to "make sure that Barack Obama has folks like Jim who will help the him make the changes we so desperately need."

In an email sent this morning, James Carville wrote, "If there's one thing I learned from my time working with President Bill Clinton, it's this: the Republican smear machine isn't going to stop just because Barack Obama won. After President Clinton's election in 1992, the GOP waited about two seconds before they pulled out the knives and started going after him."

"...the Republicans are coming straight at Jim Martin and President-elect Barack Obama. Today, John McCain is campaigning for Saxby Chambliss, and there are rumors that Sarah Palin will be in Georgia soon. They know that Jim wants to help Barack Obama change our country – and they'll do whatever it takes to stop Jim from getting to D.C.", the email read.

Carville, who was the lead strategist on Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential bid, then asked supporters to help Jim Martin meet his $250,000 goal by making a contribution of just $5 today.

"There are just 19 days until the December 2nd runoff. Jim needs your help today if he's going to have a shot against the special interests that are backing Saxby Chambliss. Out-of-state, right-wing groups are already running false negative attacks against Jim. You're his first and last line of defense," Carville wrote.
