Blasting the Ceiling

WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

In numbers just announced, Barack Obama raised $66 million dollars in August.

Face it, most voters are low information, and it's the money that brings the ads to them. Half a million new donors added to the tally, and if everyone writes just one more check....

Update from Matt: The Obama campaign had $77 million cash on hand as of the end of August. That's very impressive.

I saw this, and the MSM is grossly under-reporting this.

hey, watched the View interview - I think that the Obama campaign should work to have a team of women interview him again. I'd help if they asked. I got questions.

(interview McC, that is)

That and the ground game. This money is going to go toward building formidable organizations in the states, too. The Republicans have had the advantage there in the last few cycles, but this time the guy with the "community organizing" background is, well, organizing the communities. :D

And I just LOVED the "George Wallace was a governor, Martin Luther king was a community organizer"

I have a kind of fondness for George Wallace. He did good at the end.

That's probably right. Palin + lies = agitated Dems. Anecdotally, I donated for the first time in September. I am firmly liberal but also a real skeptic and I had not been a staunch supporter of any candidate in the primaries. As such, I didn't havea real reason to donate...until now. The MSM talks about Palin's influence on fundraising for the GOP, but Palin and the negative campaigning has driven me over the edge and into donating what I can as a student. If there are more like me, and I assume there are, expect a huge haul when September's numbers are released. And as has been pointed out so many times, by 538 and other blogs but not the MSM, don't underestimate the ground game that this funraising helps cultivate. Polls don't accurately reflect which campaign is successfully raising new supporters and getting people who don't answer the phones and aren't as enthusiastic to show up on election day.

I think I made my third rather modest donation a week or so ago, plus another donation to moveon.org, myself. I may have made two donations to the Obama campaign this month. I'd have to go check the visa card online to make sure (can't remember if one of them was late August or early Sept).

yep we are finally up to $100.00 in three donations. I am happy he is raising it, and hope he raises 100 mil in sept and oct, but also hope he gets to election day with a zero bal in the account!!! spend that money! dont save it for Nov!!!

You need to save some of it for November. The folks in suits for the election day court actions and post-election day court actions do not come cheap.

Nope, spend it all. The lawyers will work on credit, knowing that Obama will be able to raise the money to pay them off later.

I also think they can raise separate money for any post-election activities,

isn't McCain limited to 84 million between now and November? I'm thinking maybe Obama will easily be able to outspend him.

With two exceptions. The first is the General Election Legal and Accounting Costs (GELAC). McCain is able to raise funds for that account to cover the expenses of complying with FEC reporting requirements. The second is the RNC. Technically, the campaign is not supposed to coordinate with the RNC which is supposed to be making independent expenditures. The last time a presidential campaign did not coordinate with the national party was George Washington. So whatever the RNC has on hand or can raise in the next two months is there for McCain to use.

In addition, there are those pesky PACs and 527s.
