WE'VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com
The DNC requires that their delegations be half male-half female. I don't want to go back to that demographic discussion, but I have prepared two polls for today, one for women who have had children, and one for everybody else. It's not an attempt at being sexist, nor discriminatory, it's just one has a different view of the world once her water has broken. (And yes, mothers can answer the second poll, too.)
I doubt that the "pregnant man" reads this blog, but if so, he is certainly welcome in the "I've had a child poll".
Here is this little tidbit from the Star Telegram:
Just yesterday, Palin was in Texas at a forum on energy with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and executives from four other states. The governor's water broke during the energy conference but she stayed and gave a 30-minute speech before boarding an Alaska Airlines plane home to deliver the baby. Palin gave birth to Trig Paxson Van Palin Friday at 6:30 a.m. No word on why Palin was so determined to make sure young Trig wasn't born a Texan.
So here are the poll questions, first one for those who have personally given birth. I know the modern thing is to say "we're pregnant" but we're talking anatomy here. Second poll is for everyone. And please, in the comments, for our more delicate readers, let's not point out how far from "minor drip of clear liquid", "her water broke" really is.....

2. The more babies, the faster the birth is.
Because all of the above, that behaviour is literally UNBELIEVABLE.

A leak is equivalent to a water break for a woman who has birthed 4 children. Palin put the life of her baby and those on the plane at risk by flying after her water broke. She should have gone directly to a local hospital to begin delivery. Her doctor supposedly did not recommend this and I question her judgment since a 10-12 hour flight would not be appropriate at that stage of pregnancy.

"I seriously question the governor's judgement for making the bizarre decision to fly back to Alaska after her membranes ruptured. She was asking for trouble, but fortunately made the trip safely. I hope she runs the statehouse better than she handles her own pregnancies.

So do I.

I looked up the average length of labor, everyone knows it usually gets shorter the more babies a woman has had, and it says 7-8 hours for a second pregnancy.
If we believe this was actually her baby, she took a big risk getting on that plane, and did not do well going back to work three days after the birth of a handicapped child. In fact, it would look like she did not care about the baby's welfare.
I am not going to go there. I am assuming it was fine for her to get on the plane, because the baby was on his way up in Alaska, and she went back to work because her daughter, the actual mother, was at home with the baby.
I am pissed off at her talking pro-life credit, however, when I think there's a good chance Downs was not looked for with a young mother. If it was looked for, I wonder what her daughter thought when she found out? Was going ahead her decision? This is kind of like a bad movie out of the fifties. Thank goodness women in general are not faced with this stuff any more.

OK, until someone other than anonymous posters on message boards comes forward to make a claim on the "Desperate Housewives" theme, can we drop it?. If you're really worried, file a FOIA and try to get a copy of the birth certificate.
As for the broken water thing, it is here that I have some real questions. Yes, every pregnancy is different, and yes, the range of time from the onset of labor to delivery can vary as widely as opinions on Gov. Palin's executive experience.

That said, the real issue here is the safety of both the mother and the child.
When a mom's water breaks, it is not always a huge gush of fluid. In fact, it is often times a trickle that can be absorbed in a sanitary pad. Over time, however, the mom would need to frequently change that pad, as once the "water" starts coming, it usually doesn't stop. If the reports that the governor waited in excess of 8 hours to see a health care professional, it would not be a stretch to say that she'd be very messy by the time she got to that clinic. It is also fair to be skeptical of the idea that no one on the plane noticed anything out of sorts, because at the most basic level, there her seat would need extra cleaning upon arrival in Alaska.

What is even more disturbing is the risk she posed to both herself and the baby, as once water breaks, there is a perforation in the amniotic sac, presenting the increased possibility of infection. It is for this reason that health care professionals recommend showers over baths for women whose water has broken.
All of that understood, no matter what any of of think, it is entirely reasonable that Gov. Palin wanted to have HER doctor deliver HER baby, instead of some doctor she'd never met delivering her baby. And frankly, any woman who has an OB/GYN who they like and trust, would probably:
1. Take their advice
2. Strongly prefer she deliver the baby
So, while there may be smoke here, I'd much rather stick to discussing her completely absence of preparedness to be commander in chief, the fact that she's still not convinced humans have anything to do with global warming, and that despite her claims in regards to the Bridge to Nowhere -- not only was she for it before she was against it, she kept the federal money!

I do not want to stir the boat with the HRC fans more than necessary but Biden (if not the most qualified Democrat) was among the most qualified Democrats. Of course, the best qualified does not necessarily equal the best candidate. If it did, we might be talking about President Richardson or President Biden right now .
